Jeffrey Sortisio Frontier High School recently adopted the FHS writing guidelines. Writing guideline posters are displayed throughout the building. Teachers have committed to helping students improve their writing skills. As a result, all written work should adhere to the following guidelines 1. All students should be able to print or write (cursive) legibly. 2. When required, all written thoughts should be expressed in complete sentences. ALL writing must be free of slang and texting language . 3. All written work should contain correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, usage, and capitalization (i.e. first word of each sentence and proper nouns). 4. Paragraphs should be indented five spaces and should have a beginning, middle, and an end, with a logical flow from one idea to the next. 5. All paragraphs should have a topic sentence. Sentences in the paragraph should be related to the topic sentence. (Students should ask themselves, “Does the written communication accomplish the task?”) 6. All written communication should exhibit awareness of audience, be appropriate to the task, and be comprehensible. (Is the audience the teacher, fellow classmates, or New York State through DBQ’s, etc.?) 7. All written communication should convey clear and concise meaning. 8. Any copied works, quotes, or ideas must be properly cited. 9 . Student writing should be professional in presentation (No doodles, song lyrics, or other distracting comments on the paper). 10 . Written communication should demonstrate vocabulary, idioms, sentence and paragraph structures that are appropriate to the topic. (Vocabulary for a persuasive essay differs from that which may be used to describe a scientific experiment.) Frontier High School Writing Guidelines
