NCR REA NEWS
FROM PRESIDENT CHUCK
F rom all of us here at the NCR REA—your
trustees, administrator, editor, and webmaster—
a hearty welcome to you, our valued members,
to the first newsletter for 2014. We hope you
and yours are off to a safe, healthy, and great
start that continues throughout the year.
As reported in our 2013 Q4 newsletter, the Trustee and Support Team
remains not only in place and in our 18th year, but also remains highly
motivated to provide quality and value in our programs.
In 2013, our new website continued to gain momentum. Not only did it attract
more users because of all the great information we now have online, it also
helped us gain new members through our easy-to-complete application. In
addition, the newsletter you are reading now is a great source of information
about your fellow members, as well as a word-of-mouth aid for you to help us
say, ”Join us and keep in touch!”
You may recall our 2013 initiative to bring NCR International Distributors
into REA membership. Previous newsletters contained articles about the
Mittwochs from Israel and Philip Toledo Ltd. in Malta. This issue contains a
write-up of Blanche Birger, the longtime NCR Distributor in Mauritius.
Planning for the 2014 Reunion/Annual Meeting is coming along very well.
Vice President Mike Freeman and his team have a number of exciting and fun
events already scheduled for September 11 and 12, 2014.
We look forward to welcoming you on September 11 and 12, 2014 for the
event!

DID YOU KNOW? S U B M I T T E D B Y K E N C A R R
I received this story from an NCR REA member. The author is anonymous, but I think we can all
identify with him. This is good laugh for people over 60 and those who will soon be there.
When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the business I ran for over 30 years with
1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, takes pictures,
and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. Under duress, I signed up for Twitter and
Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, my 13 grand kids, and two great grand kids could
communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as
Twitter with its 140 characters limit.
My phone was beeping every three minutes, with details of everything except the bowel
movements of the entire next generation. Once, I had the phone with me while standing in
the checkout line at Barnes and Noble. I was talking to my wife and everyone within 50 yards was glaring
at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use the darn thing, so I guess I got a little loud. I am not ready
to live like this. Now, I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday, because they think I got lost
every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I mean the
GPS looked pretty smart on my dashboard, but the lady inside that gadget was
the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10
minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think
that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let
go with a deep sigh then tell me to make a right turn at the next light. Then if I
made a left turn by mistake, well, it was not a good relationship. You can’t believe how she acted if I made
a U turn. Now I keep the GPS in a box under my tool bench with the Bluetooth (it’s really red) cell phone.
Now when I get lost, I call my wife, tell her the name of the cross streets, and she leads me home. Come to
think about it, she is starting to develop that same tone as the Gypsy GPS lady. Oh well—at
least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, we have had our cordless phones for four years and I am still trying to
figure out how to use all those extra buttons. I also still haven't figured out how I manage to
lose all three phones at once. The phone rings and there I am running around the house
digging under chair cushions, checking bathrooms, and looking in dirty laundry baskets.
Thank goodness we have an answering machine.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the
grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves, but this
sudden "Paper or Plastic" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I
bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never
remember to take them with me. So now I toss it back to them. When they ask
me, "Paper or plastic" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then
it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.
We senior citizens just don't need any more gadgets. The TV remote and the
garage door remote are about all we want to handle. Well actually, there are
buttons on the TV remote that I don't understand. I'm afraid to push some of those buttons.
Recently, I was asked if I tweet. I answered, “No, but I do toot a lot."

With agreement to purchase Digital Insight and acquisition of Alaric Systems, NCR will establish the
most comprehensive suite of retail banking solutions in the industry and deliver an unparalleled value
proposition for its financial services customers
DULUTH, Ga., December 2, 2013 – Today, NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), the global leader in
consumer transaction technologies, took the next step in the transformation of its Financial Services
business, announcing that it had entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Digital Insight Corporation,
a leader in online and mobile banking solutions, for a purchase price of $1.65 billion, and that it had
completed the acquisition of Alaric Systems Limited, a provider of secure transaction switching and fraud
prevention software, for a purchase price of approximately $84 million. Digital Insight is majority owned
by Thoma Bravo, LLC.
Together, these companies complement and extend NCR’s existing capabilities in the banking industry to
form a complete enterprise software platform that will deliver a unique and compelling consumer
experience across all digital and physical channels - mobile, online, branch, and ATM. The combination
will help retail banks and other financial institutions reduce legacy costs and enable solutions for new, more
nimble branches, by providing one platform for omni-channel services and all payment and transaction
types.
Today’s announcement follows the successful acquisitions of Retalix and Radiant Systems that have
transformed NCR’s Retail and Hospitality businesses by delivering revenue growth, improved profitability,
and an increased revenue mix of software and SaaS for NCR. The acquisitions of Digital Insight and Alaric
Systems continue a strategic plan of transformative acquisitions across all of the company’s three core lines
of business and will enhance NCR’s existing capabilities, delivering the industry’s most comprehensive
suite of retail banking solutions.
"This is a historic day for NCR," said NCR chairman and CEO, Bill Nuti. "For the past eight years, NCR
has been executing a deliberate and thoughtful strategic agenda to profoundly
reinvent the company. Over that time, we have orchestrated a patient balance
between legacy issues and growth initiatives that has led to delivering a
compelling value proposition for all of our stakeholders. Today represents a
culmination of many years of effort, particularly as it relates to what was once
NCR's core businesses. Today, we are fundamentally and permanently changing
our largest line of business, Financial Services. With the announcements of our
agreement to purchase Digital Insight and our acquisition of Alaric Systems,
NCR becomes a powerful, global FinTech solutions provider enabling retail
banks to deliver on the promise of omni-channel capabilities – on top of an
unparalleled, innovative software platform.
Digital Insight, based in Menlo Park, California; and Alaric Systems, based in London, U.K., together will
uniquely position NCR to deliver an enterprise software stack that securely and seamlessly creates a
differentiated consumer experience across all channels (online, mobile, ATM, branch) improving a retail
bank’s growth, profitability and customer satisfaction.
NCR REA News Page 6
TITLE
With the addition of Digital Insight, NCR will also enhance its ability to serve the mid-market retail
banking segment, which includes Digital Insight’s highly diversified customer base consisting of more
than 1,000 financial institutions with 12 million online banking users and nearly 4.8 million mobile end
users. The Digital Insight acquisition will also provide an opportunity for NCR to offer its clients
additional solutions for mobile, bill pay and online banking.
“Together, NCR, Digital Insight and Alaric Systems are committed to delivering value to financial
institutions," said Andy Heyman, senior vice president, NCR Financial Services. "We have an opportunity
to enable differentiated consumer experiences through safe, secure, and integrated transactions across
every banking touch point. We will help financial institutions to reduce costs, serving as a single solutions
provider for ATM, branch, mobile, commerce and internet banking services, as well as the payments and
processing infrastructure behind those experiences.”
Alaric Systems payments processing and fraud prevention software allows financial institutions, processors
and retailers to manage ATM, point of sale, ecommerce and mobile payment or banking transactions,
deliver complex multi-channel payments integration and carry out enterprise fraud and risk management.
Alaric Systems powers more than 1.25 billion transactions a month across 30 countries.
The Alaric Systems solution set includes the Authentic payments and Fractals fraud prevention
technologies. Authentic is a modern, ultra high-performance authorization and routing system for
managing transactions from all channels across the enterprise, from ATM, point of sale to ecommerce and
mobile. Fractals is an intelligent fraud detection and prevention framework designed to detect and intercept
fraudulent payment transactions before the transaction is completed.
The Digital Insight transaction is subject to the expiration or termination of the applicable waiting period
under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976, as amended, and the satisfaction of
other and customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2014. Both
the Digital Insight and Alaric Systems transactions are independently accretive to 2014 non-GAAP
EPS.(1)
RBC Capital Markets, LLC acted as lead financial advisor to NCR. J.P. Morgan and BofA Merrill Lynch
also acted as financial advisors and Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, LLP acted as legal counsel to NCR
on the Digital Insight transaction.
(1) NCR defines non-GAAP earnings per share as earnings excluding pension and special items on a per
share basis.

NCR D ISTRIBUTOR , BLANCHE BIRGER . . .
T his issue, we highlight another long-time NCR
Distributor, Blanche Birger, from the beautiful
island of Mauritius.
Ile de Maurice is situated in the Indian Ocean over 1900 miles
from Jo-burg and over 700 miles from Madagascar. Its modern history traces back to Napoleon’s
naval defeat by the British in 1814 when it became a British colony. The largest ethnic group
migrated from India after slavery was abolished in 1835. In March, 1968, Mauritius became an
independent member of the Commonwealth of Nations. While the official language in Mauritius is
English, it is spoken by only 1% with Creole dominant (81%), an Indian dialect Bhojpuri (12%), and
French (3%). Major religions include Hindu, Roman Catholicism, and Islam.
In 1953, Blanche Birger was incorporated in Port Louis by Jacque Blanche, who was from France,
and by Jacques Blanche, a Belgian Jew of Polish descent. After the Birgers and Mittwochs started
attending CPCs, it was later learned that the two families had connections to the Jewish Ghetto in
Warsaw before World War II. Similar to post-war Malta, Mauritius was slow to begin receiving
consumer goods, so Blanche Birger built its business on sales and service of appliances. It was a
natural to add business equipment from NCR, Chubb, Pitney Bowes, and others. During the 1960s
and 1970s, the ties to NCR UK and NCR France were strong and the offering grew also to include
ATMs, Item Processing, accounting machines, and, of course, cash registers. At one time during the
1980s and early 1990s, Blanche Birger had the front-to-back online network at Mauritius
Commercial Bank with ATMs, and teller terminals connected to a large 8000-series system.
Scanning via 255/726 was also a Blanche Birger introduction to the island. They sold and supported
many 8250/8270 systems.
Since the beginning of the 21st Century, Blanche Birger has added many new divisions, offering
high-end servers, hardware, software, integration, and communications to its list of sophisticated
services. Today, NCR provides IP and ATMs to Blanche Birger, which also represents IBM,
Microsoft, Oracle, Avaya, Cisco, VMWare, and others.
In its Values statement, Blanche Birger refers to integrity, commitment, and professional excellence.
I was honored to represent Blanch Birger with NCR Europe and travel there many times and meet
with their customers. I always felt they lived up to their values.

NCR Retiree, Otto Seller, Turns Astronaut!
F or you folks who
know Otto Seller, now 85
years old, you’ll get a kick
out of this story. Here’s
Otto just before he jumped off of
the 850-foot platform at
the Stratosphere Casino in Las
Vegas!
The Stratosphere Casino in Vegas
is like the Space Needle in Seattle!
However, on top the Stratosphere’s
revolving restaurant, there’s a
playground which includes a mini
roller coaster, the Hanging Coaster
Car, the Space Shot, and—the
newest attraction—the Sky Jump!
Having lived in Las Vegas for 22
years, a younger Otto had already
ridden the other rides. So at age 85,
he figured he was done with such
nonsensical thrills. But then,
relatives came to Vegas to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Knowing about Otto’s previous courageous
feats, they convinced him to do the Sky Jump. So, when push came to shove, Otto, in all his glory, agreed to
go for it.
As Otto describes the experience, “It was fun and went well! As I stood and looked down 850 FT, I wondered
what in Heaven’s name I was doing! Then I jumped! I was in a harness attached to a cable and it was well
controlled. It was a free-fall for a short time, then the speed was held at about 45 MPH. It slowed at landing
to make it very easy! So chock up another one for the “Senior Brigade!”
So let’s hear it for this brave man. It just goes to show you’re NEVER too old to be a daredevil!
A Little About Otto’s NCR Career
Otto started his impressive 44-year NCR career on July 7, 1947--fresh fresh out of high school in Denver,
CO. His first job was a Shipper Helper, followed by an Apprentice Serviceman. Over the years, he aspired to
a fully-trained Serviceman, a Banking Systems Representative, a Service Manager, a District Manager over
Field Engineering, then a Regional Director over Field Engineering. Throughout his career, he’s lived in and
traveled to many places such as Los Angeles, Colorado Springs, Phoenix--even Africa, where his territory
consisted of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, the Sultanate of Oman, and Pakistan!
Truly an amazing man and inspiration to all of us! Thank you, Otto, for sharing your story with us!

M any years
ago, a 65MB
disk drive
sold for
approximately $67,000. It
was so big, heavy, and
sensitive, it sometimes had
to be supported by
hydraulic feet. Today, a 4T
(that’s terabytes we’re talking here) Seagate drive the
size of a typical TV remote costs about $170.
Indeed the times they are a changin’. But how much
space do we really need to store our stuff?
