Long term partnerships making a lasting difference in people’s lives.

What a privilege to be working with people that want to make a difference in the lives of those where choices are few and circumstances challenging! In the space of my first three months working for Hand in Hand, I’ve been able to visit 8 of our project partners in Kenya, Uganda and Ecuador to understand them better in order to serve them intelligently from the UK. The workload is certainly challenging but ‘with God all things are possible.’ I look forward to the seeing lives changed and communities impacted as we continue our work here at Hand in Hand. And a big hello to Mike...And a big hello to Mike...And a big hello to Mike...And a big hello to Mike... We were thrilled to welcome Mike Duffy to the office team at Hand in Hand, shortly before Christmas. Mike’s main responsibility is to get to grips with the day to day managing of our accounts, ensuring that what we have is carefully stewarded for maximum impact. He also brings a wealth of experience to Hand in Hand, which we are sure will benefit other areas of internal management here. Mike lives in Danbury and is married with 2 children

University of Life (CBC), Brazil Hand in Hand has worked in close partnership with the University of Life (CBC) in Brazil, since the charity was registered over 12 years ago. In fact, our relationship goes back many years before Hand in Hand was even registered and we have Marcondes Marques, CBC’s founder and director, to thank for getting us started on this journey. In the last 12 years both organisations have grown significantly to support more children in a multitude of different ways and we thank God for the lives changed as a result. But growth brings new challenges. So back in early 2010, by mutual agreement with the Hand in Hand trustees, Marcondes, supported by his wife, Ruth, began establishing a UK registered charity to solely support the growing work at the University of Life (CBC) and beyond. The registration of this new charity, UNIVIDA, was completed last Autumn and we are currently in the process of transferring all regular financial gifts to this new organisation. Please join us in praying for the next step of this exciting journey for Marcondes, Ruth and the staff at the University of Life. We are sorry that we will not to be working directly together in the future, but wish the new team at UNIVIDA every blessing as they aim to take things on to bigger and better future. Before long you might well be laughing or crying, but you would have a pretty good understanding of the fortunes of children growing up in the slums and the difference CBC University of Life has made in their lives. For many, something as simple as a an opportunity to learn to play the drums has quite literally saved their lives by drawing them away from the dangers of the streets.

This little boy is Aldaberto. He joined CBC University of Life at the age of 8. His best friend was executed in front of him when he was just 13 years old and his mother resolved to leave the area after being injured by a stray bullet during a gunfight. Despite all this, Aldaberto decided to stay, to look after himself, continue with his studies and pursue his emerging talent as a 400m run-ner. Having finished school he is now one of the most respected employees at the security firm where he works. Most importantly Aldaberto is trusted in his community because of his integrity, faith, determination and respect for others.

This is the fruit of CBC University of Life, it doesn’t happen overnight, but over years of daily support and commit-ment. It’s thanks to Hand in Hand that

for the last 15 years Aldaberto has not only stayed alive but that he has become such a respected role model. Remarkably, six months after marrying his CBC sweet-heart, Luzilene, the couple announced that they both want to commit their lives to work for the ministry. Aldaberto and Luzilene are leaving the nest and taking a great step of faith towards the future. They are ready to make the transition from being receivers of help to being responsible for giving that help to others.

This is surely the pinnacle of success for CBC and Hand in Hand to celebrate together.

Leaving the nest of Hand in HandLeaving the nest of Hand in HandLeaving the nest of Hand in HandLeaving the nest of Hand in Hand However, CBC University of Life is not slowing down and in its own way is also leaving the nest in terms of its relationship with Hand in Hand.

Over the last few years the work in Fortaleza has become much more than just an educational program for children.

Its operations have expanded significantly to include parents groups, work placements, church services, counselling and a missions training institute.. It is for that reason that we are also taking a great step of faith and have registered UNIVIDA as an independent UK charity, dedicated to the same vision as University of Life (CBC) in Brazil. The new charity will take on Hand in Hand’s former role in co-ordinating UK support for the work in Brazil, but will also facilitate the development of new projects led by people like Adalberto and Luzilene. Marcondes and I would like to express our deep-est appreciation to Hand in Hand for 15 years of life changing partnership which has produced so many in-credible results and enabled so much growth. And now, as we leave the nest, we ask for your continued prayers

building for the future

The community celebrates as the new clinic at The community celebrates as the new clinic at The community celebrates as the new clinic at The community celebrates as the new clinic at Mogonjet opens at last!Mogonjet opens at last!Mogonjet opens at last!Mogonjet opens at last! As part of our ongoing partnership with Grace Foundation International, we have also been supporting new initiatives to complement the excellent community facilities at Mogonjet School, in Western Kenya. One such development has been the Community Dispensary, designed to provide a range of medical services for this remote rural village. The building, funded by Hand in Hand, was ready some time ago but lacked a nurse and supplies. So we were thrilled to hear that the Kenyan Government made good on their promise and provided GFI with funds to pay a salary and buy equipment and medicines. Viola, Mogonjet’s new community nurse, is 25 and comes from the local area. She is very happy to be serving her neighbours. Instead of walking miles for treatment both adults and children from the school can now access help sooner rather than later.

A step further...A step further...A step further...A step further... 13 years after Hand in Hand registered, we are now grappling with a difficult, but exciting, challenge. As more and more of the children from our partner projects are completing their secondary education, many are beginning to see new opportunities in front of them. The barrier? The barrier? The barrier? The barrier? Often, it is the need to continue studying at college or University, while for others more skills-based training is required. And, above all, how can they finance this final step? The answer? The answer? The answer? The answer? One option, currently being piloted, is a bursary fund. The first funds were given to 10 students from Mogonjet School, 10 from the New Hope Children’s Centre and a further 10 from an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Nakuru. Students have been sponsored onto courses in computers, accounts, tailoring and hairdressing at the Centre of Hope, in Nakuru (itself, also a Hand in Hand partner project).

Legal complexities and a lack of qualified staff have made running a full community programme too much of a challenge at present, but Dave and Ana continue to support their core group of children with hot meals, educational support and a safe refuge in which to play and to study. Plus, local schools are welcoming them in as they look to find common solutions to many of the issues facing these poor, vulnerable children.

Faced with the prospect of so many vulnerable children being abandoned, with no education, in some cases no home, we had to intervene. Together, we really have made a difference. So many of you stepped up to the mark last year, with your very generous gifts and support, that things are now getting back on track at the centre at the heart of Dagoretti, Kenya.

At the end of January we held a very positive meeting with the Daylove managing committee and confirmed plans for the next three years to get Daylove operating effectively again.

The four priorities are pre-primary and secondary school education, along with the night shelter and improved vocational training opportunities for older children. A major step, now underway, is to find and employ a centre manager to drive forward these changes, oversee the daily operations and maintain the highest standard of care and opportunity for the neediest children in the Dagoretti area.
