David Brewster Keeping a charity afloat in this economic climate is challenging to say the least. The fact that we have been so successful in doing this is largely down to you, although Lisa, Rob and I will take some of the credit with our funding activities. Your stories have inspired so many local people to undertake extreme activities and fundraisers in the name of Ryedale Special Fami-lies. You yourselves have attended our fundraisers in considerable numbers and have helped swell the coffers that way. Obviously all this buttering up is leading to asking you for more help, but this time it does not involve money changing hands, cycling ridiculous distances or buying kitchen equipment. We need you to vote for us. One of our parents is a customer of the insurance company Engage Mutual and he has nominated RSF for a Community Award of £5,000. If we are successful in this bid we will be able to continue to provide short breaks from parents caring responsibili-ties, particularly during the stressful holiday periods. Nominations close in mid- October, so from later this month you can vote for our Community Project on www.engagemutual.com/foundation. Looking at last year’s successful projects we will need at least 1000 votes, so the challenge we are giving to your family is not only to vote yourself but to get 10 other people to vote for us. So it’s now in your hands. We will email you later this month when we know the vote has started. You may not have had the chance to vote on Scottish independence but you can vote to reduce the stress in many Ryedale family’s lives. One of our new projects this year has been the development of the Over 18’s Group. Origi-nally the Youth Group was for 13 to 23 year olds, but such was the demand for places and need to make it more age appropriate, we have created a new group for the Over 18’s. The young people are planning their activities and have decided to go London in March. They have organised their own fundraising for this trip, including a Pampered Chef evening. I have yet to break the news to my wife as to how much I spent that night, which on its own should bring the London trip a lot closer. However, in addition we have recently heard that we have been successful in a bid for £10,000 from the County Councils Innovations Fund, which will insure the group’s future for the next year. Bids such as these are another way in which we are able to balance the RSF budget. The other major contribution to our funds is the money we earn from contracts with both Children’s and Adult Services of North Yorkshire County Council. This area of work is getting more competitive and we may have to tender for more of our respite work in future. Howev-er, we get a good write up from parents about this work and that helps to make funding more secure. For the first time, we recently tendered for national funding through the Council for Disabled Children. This was a partnership bid we made with the North Yorkshire and York Forum, Harrogate Carers Resource and the CAB. It was for the provision of Independent Pa-rental Supporters to help parents with the process of converting Educational Statements to the new Education, Health and Care Plans. Unfortunately, we were not successful with this bid and the contract has gone to a national organisation called Core Assets, which won the contract for 28 local authority areas. When I have more details about how they propose to deliver this service I will let you know as many of you will be interested in this support, if you child currently has a statement. If you want to find out more about the finances of RSF then come to the AGM on November 23rd when our accountant will be making a short presentation and your children can enjoy the roller disco downstairs.

Well done to the RSF Over 18 group who held a Pampered Chef party on Saturday 20th September.

The evening included a cooking challenge between two teams to make ham and cheese puffs.

The members did an amazing job with a raffle and

games and raised £190.

RSF AGM & Family Fun Day Sunday 23rd November

1.30pm to 3.30pm Pickering Leisure Centre

Our AGM combines with a family fun ses-sion at the Leisure Centre. The big bouncy castle and soft play area is available, followed by roller disco. Some staff support is available for those parents who would like to attend the AGM meeting, please book your place on the

Family Support Group

The Family Support Group is planning 2 sessions during the half term and Christmas holidays.

Friday 31st October, 10am to 2pm, Hallowe’en crafts at Ebberston Cricket Club

Tuesday 23rd December, 10am to 2pm, Christmas party at Friends Meeting House,

Pickering

These days are for parents and children to attend together, there will be crafts, games

and lunch (please bring a contribution).

Are you interested in conductive education?

Conductive education is a system of rehabilita-tion for people with neurological disorders such

as cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and those who have suffered strokes or

head injuries.

This therapy aims to improve mobility, develop stamina and help with daily living skills.

RSF can put you in touch with a parent who is interested in having conductive education ses-sions available in Ryedale.

RSF Youth group

Ages 13 to 18 The Youth Group is one of RSF’s longest

running social groups. It is based in At-

mosphere Youth Centre in Pickering and

runs on Thursday evening between 6.30 and 8.30pm.

The group has regular activities and is a

great place to meet socially and make

friends. The Youth Group has longer ac-

tivity sessions in the Easter and summer

school holidays.

We have some spaces at the group. If

your son or daughter is within this age

group—or approaching 13 years, please

get in touch with the office, or fill in the reply sheet.

Accessible transport may be available to

the group, please ask us!

YWCC 2014 Many thanks to all the organisers, sponsors, marshals and of course—cyclists, who took part in our Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge on 12th & 13th July—it was an amazing weekend!

The 158 cyclists set off from Norton College on the 2 cay chal-lenge to cycle 144 miles of the Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route—this year we did it anti-clockwise for the first time. There were refreshment stops at Thixendale Village Hall and The Tiger Inn, North Newbould and the sun shone. The halfway point is at Hutton Cranswick Sports Field and it is here that cyclists rest up for the evening and camp overnight. The Hutton Cranswick volunteers provided an amazing BBQ, there was a bar on hand and live music from the Nick Rooke band. The following morning another 72 miles were tackled taking in Bridlington, Hunmanby and Sledmere before arriving back at Norton College. This time the weather was not so good—a few showers cooled everyone down in the morning. More refreshments (and shelter) was provided at the Forge Inn, Sewerby and Butterwick Farm Shop. This year the event was recognised by British Cycling as one of their Sportif events, which attracted cyclists from further afield. A large team of 17 entered from Rillington based Ellis Patents and we had our first tandem. Many thanks to our sponsors, Bannisters Farm Potatoes, Big Bear Bikes, Escada Systems, Inntravel and Wold Top Brewery, as well as Karro Foods for helping us with the supply of vari-ous meats for the BBQ. This is our 4th running of the event, something we never ex-pected to grow as it has since the first event with its 63 rid-ers. We really feel we’ve established something special within the local cycling calendar and already can’t wait for our 5th anniversary event on 11th & 12th July 2015! This years event raised around £14,000 for RSF—this helps fund our ongoing work in providing care and support to over 400 families throughout Ryedale, who have children with dis-abilities or special needs.
