Happy New Year!CEO’s MessageAs I mentioned in the last newsletter there will be a big focus this year on ensuring that we build a strong and successful RMA business in 2015. The key motto is ‘Optimize, Focus and Deliver’, please keep these words in mind as you and your supervisor are working to set your personal objectives for 2015. This year we are working to ensure that most professional, supervisory and management employees all have objectives linked to our business plan. If you have any questions on this process after reading the HR Communications, please talk with your supervisor or local HR Manager. A key objective I have set myself is to communicate more with you, our employees, and a great starting place are the results of our first Global Employee Engagement Survey.

The participation to the survey was terrific, with 3,400 employees globally providing great feedback, and the initial results are encouraging with an average company wide employee engagement score of 66%. This represents the responses of agreement or strong agreement across all factors covered in the survey. The factors that rated most highly across the group overall being:• My Supervisor• Leadership • Quality & Customer Focus

However, we are not just looking at the good messages – our attention will clearly be focused on the areas which still need improvement.

The factors receiving the lowest overall responses were:• Performance Management & Reward• Learning & Development• Communication

These factors do differ from country to country – and even within countries, between departments. The individual results are now being distributed to each business leader and everyone will have the opportunity to look at the results from their team. We will also be engaging your help to identify ways to improve your employment experience with RMA. We don’t have all of the answers so it is important that you participate to help us come up with some of the solutions, for your teams. I would like to take this opportunity to again thank all of those who participated. With such a high participation rate, I believe we will have captured the big issues and with your help, can move towards addressing some of these.

Just recently I have been holding a number of meetings with employees across all levels in Myanmar and Thailand. The purpose of these is to provide me with an opportunity to share some of the activities around the Group with a broader team but more importantly to get direct feedback from employees on their views about what is going on, what we could look to be doing etc. This has been a great experience and one which I will be endeavoring to continue across all markets as I travel through. Often times, the person closest to the front-line can come up with great suggestions that we should be looking to implement and I’m looking forward to talking directly with more of you.

I am also happy to advise the selection of the winners of the 2014 Chairman’s Awards have now been made. Certificates are being printed and winners will be announced as soon as this is done. This is a great way to recognize those within our businesses who go that one step over and above to provide amazing service and support to their peers and customers. Keep an eye out in the next newsletter so you can be introduced to some of the winners from around the globe.

On behalf of the Whitcraft family and the Senior Management team, I wish you, your families and the RMA Group overall, a very happy, successful and prosperous 2015.

Best reg rds,a

The Game is

ON at RMA Sports Day 2015

RMA Automotive teams took part in sports, games and fun contests during the annual sports day and New Year Party in January. During the day Blue and Pink teams competed against each other for the honor of becoming overall games winner and in the end the Blue team won the top prize, coming top in Mini-Football, Fun Games, Cheerleading and the Singing and Dancing Contest. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Pink team as they were victorious in the Chair ball and Takraw activities.

A great day was had by all as the RMA teams who work together also played together. Well done to everyone!

Myanmar is a unique country that is very distinctive, much in the same way as Laos and Cambodia. Despite the many challenges faced in the past, we always knew the country would open up one day, and when it did, there would be tremendous business opportunities.

When we first began in the 90s Kevin and I believed that we could be part of a transformation of Myanmar, and we always made this clear to our staff. It was a country of 65 million people, yet it had no infrastructure, no cars, and no modern buildings – we knew once it opened up that there would be opportunities for business and improving the citizens quality of life.

In the begining, RMA Myanmar, which was really Kevin, me, Olivier and Thinn Thinn, started trading goods and services like steel, wood, flour mills, some vehicles, substations and of couse generators. The business performed well but due to growing international pressure, RMA significantly downsized our presence in Myanmar from 2001 to 2012. With the relaxation of domestic and international regulations, we established RMA Services in 2012.

RMA MyanmarPast, Present, Future

9

How was Myanmar in the old days (before they opened the country) compared to now?

Dale: There was a much slower pace of life and usually the roads were pretty empty. It was difficult to live what many of us call a normal life, as the infrastructure was very poor and was unreliable – electricity, phones, roads. Almost everything was challenging.

Kit: Since I started coming to Myanmar in 2012, it seems RMA has consistently been one of the first to do everything. Things we take for granted like makingphone calls, finding an office, opening a bank account and setting up internet service were difficult in the

beginning. Then we were the first to open a full 3S automotive dealership, the first international pizza and ice cream restaurants, and more. And while a lot has changed very quickly in the past few years, the pace of change continues in Myanmar and I’m sure there will be many more “firsts” to come for RMA in the future.

How would you describe Myanmar today in 3 words?

Dale: Exciting, Challenging and Frustrating - or in three other words - I LOVE IT!

Thinn Thinn: Moving Forward Myanmar!

Page 10: NEWSLETTER - RMA Groupmarketing.rmagroup.net/upload/622015_RMA Group Newsletter... · 2015-02-06 · ISSUE 5 FEBRUARY 2015 a r ound Myanmar! Eat& Hangout The Game isON at RMA

Never give up on the prize -just keep moving forward

and being positive

Are you satisfied with the current Government reform process?

Dale: Although the government is moving forward and making positive changes in ongoing ethnic issues, infrastructure improvements, financial system, and rule of law improvements, it still is a very slow process and I would love if it moved more quickly. The good news is the trend is mostly positive and this will allow strong growth for our business.

Kit: I’ve been impressed by the government’s steady forward progress and willingness to consider ideas from multiple parties. Myanmar is doing in a few years what other governments did in decades. The “two steps forward, one step back” nature of change is sometimes frustrating, but still the overall forward progress is remarkable.

What are business etiquettes / general rules/ working culture in Myanmar?

Dale: I’d say respect people, clarify meanings, validate ideas, try to understand where others are coming from, and look for creative and positive ways to effect change.

This requires a lot of hard work and drive combined with a large amount of patience. The best piece of advice I can give is: Never give up on the prize - just keep moving forward and being positive.

Thinn Thinn: Mutual respect and trust are highly valued in Myanmar. We need to work together to ensure improvements are made.

Making an Impact in MyanmarWhat are market entry challenges and how did RMA overcome them?

Dale: One of the more challenging aspects for doing business in Myanmar is the lack of international banking and the difficulties in moving currency in and out of the country.

As in many other markets there were and continue to be many ambiguities and complexities in local policies and government regulations. RMA has been very successful in dealing with these challenges by leveraging long standing local relationships and seeking the advice of local partners in addition to legal experts. The key to succeeding is to be able to have multiple sources of information as the answers are not always straightforward.

Thinn Thinn: Human resources remain an ongoing challenge as it is difficult to find skillful and professional local employees.

as bringing innovation, integrity and endurance to our business relationships.

We have now strong established links with well-respected and knowledgeable local partners like Ko Ko Gyi and his Capital Diamond Star Group in our Automotive and Agricultural businesses; Aye Thiha and and the MK group in our Express Food Group business.

Thinn Thinn: RMA has a strong reputation in offering services and solutions in very challenging markets. We are recognized as having a portfolio of internationally respected brands that are fully supported and our well-known management team is respected too.

Speaking of Capital Diamond Star Group, one of the largest and fastest growing companies in Myanmar, how did we get them on board as a partner of Capital Automotive?

11

RMA’s entrepreneurial spirit and the willingness of the organizationto take on calculated risks.... have been instrumental in our early success

Kit: The competition in Myanmar is tough. There are many strong local players, and every international company wants to come to the new frontier of Myanmar. RMA has moved quickly, and we are going to have to keep running hard to please our customers and beat the competition.

What are the advantages that RMA Myanmar has compared to its competitors?

Dale: RMA’s entrepreneurial spirit and the willingness of the organization to take on calculated risks, especially in situations where others may hesitate, have been instrumental in our early success.

This has helped us get in quicklyto set up business, develop our customer base and quick ly establish a trusted and respected brand. RMA is now recognized

Page 12: NEWSLETTER - RMA Groupmarketing.rmagroup.net/upload/622015_RMA Group Newsletter... · 2015-02-06 · ISSUE 5 FEBRUARY 2015 a r ound Myanmar! Eat& Hangout The Game isON at RMA

Dale: This is a great story that is typical of RMA and the Whitcraft family. Kevin and Gilles met Ko Ko Gyi, the Chairman of Capital Diamond Star Group, back in the 90’s and provided Ko Ko Gyi quality world class equipment for flour mills and he was and is a major generator client.

The friendship developed over the years and with it, a great deal of trust and respect. When the country opened up again in 2012, the time was ripe to develop a joint venture and the success of this businessis now there for all to see.

Kit: RMA and CDSG make a great combination. With RMA’s international expertise and stable of world-class OEM relationships such as Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, and John Deere, coupled with CDSG’s extensive local knowledge and established distribution network across the country, we are an unbeatable team. Most importantly, RMA and Capital Diamond Star share the same vision of building great businesses for the long term.

A lot of infrastructure projects are coming up, how do you see RMA playing a part in this area?

Dale: We will play an instrumental part in the development of Myanmar’s infrastructure by leveraging the expanding JCB and Dressta Heavy Equipment product line and other related brands to follow. Our growth strategy also includes a major expansion of our Heavy Equipment, Power and Automtoive Sales and Service network from Yangon and Mandaly today to more than 5 or 6 additional cities in the very near future.

Kit: RMA has positioned itself well to grow along with the country. JCB Heavy Equipment is ideal for road construction and our Comin Engineering team is an established leader in M&E contracting services and Power Substations across the Mekong Region. RMA and it partners have been building, training and developing a world-class team on the ground in both Yangon

and Mandalay so we are ready to serve Myanmar as it develops its infrastructure.

How do we take part in the country’s development?

Dale: RMA takes an active part in pushing the county’s development, from introducing much needed high quality and well known global products like JCB, John Deere and Ford combined with world class services that can help improve the lives of local people. We also support communities around Myanmar through our CSR initiatives that focus on Education.

One of our recent key projects has been working with the School for Orphans in Yangon, by building a new school followed up by rice donations for the students, which initiated by our Automotive joint venture in partnership with Ford Motor Company. We have also provided extensive technical and safety training to Myanmar people

across the country. Helping improve education in Myanmar is an important part of our business and we will continue to expand our efforts in this area.

On the business side we have provided the right tools to help build the country’s infrastructure, from generating reliable power from Himoinsa Generators, to building roads with JCB Excavators and Backhole Loaders to providing reliable transportation. More recently we have also introduced the first world class quick service food business in Myanmar with the establishment of The Pizza Company and Swensen’s ice cream outlets.

What have RMA Myanmar’s key successes been during the last 3 years?

Dale: We have completed a huge amount of work with a high degree of success all in a very short time. Credit to our sucess must go to our dedicated and proud team , which is now over 400 strong, with most of these people joining in the last 18 months. It is very rewarding to see how eager our team members are to contribute to further success of RMA Myanmar.

There are many successes to mentionbut those that come to mind are: setting up five key business units, Automotive, Infrastructures, Engineering Solutions, Hospitality and Financial Services, in a very complex and challenging market; establishing two strong and trusting partnerships; opening a world-class Ford and Jaguar Land Rover dealerships; continuing and expanding our work in providing Gen Sets to public and private enterprises, and successfully setting up 5 restaurants. We are confident 2015 will bring even more achievements.

Dale: Our main goal is to continue to find and retain the very best people in order to deliver our aggressive business develop plans of growing the business in Yangon while implementing an aggressive expansion with all brands in other cities in Myanmar.

We also need to be nimbler, faster and more innovative than our competitors in being able to cope with the rapid change in government policies and business opportunities to ensure we continue our strong growth.

How do you see RMA Myanmar in the next 5 years?

Dale: Our vision is for RMA to be the leader in each business category we operate in, and to be recognized as a company that contributes to the growth and success of Myanmar people while providing high quality world class goods and services. And we will do this by providing opportunities for local nationals to develop skills and experience that improves their overall quality of life.

Thinn Thinn: I’d like to add to that extensive list, as the introduction of the JCB brand, a world leader in construction machinery, will be very important to the continuing development of Myanmar.

What are the most impressive projects that we’ve delivered?

Dale: WOW that really is a tough one as there have been so many. A few that come to mind quickly are: getting business license approval and setting up the RMAS central support group; the construction and staffing of two world c lass auto dealerships; securing a Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) operating license for first international food company and then the rapid set-up of our 5 out lets ; h i r ing and staffing companies that now employ over 400 people in Myanmar. And one of my favorites, Comin Asia securing the M&E contract for the Coca-Cola plant expansion which brought my favorite soft drink Coke Zero to Myanmar.

What do you think will be the biggest challenges facing RMA in the next 1-3 years?

13

Getting to Grips with His Latest Challenge

How did you feel when you were assigned to be a Country Manager in Myanmar?

As you may know, I was working for RMA in the UK running Guava International. I had decided to give up the great UK weather, retire and move back to California. However Kevin being the persistent guy he is, kept calling to see if I was bored yet, and after a couple months when he offered me the position as Country manager of Myanmar, I jumped at it. I love a challenge and the chance to grow an all new business with a strong and trustworthy brand (RMA) and with a young and committed team.

there’s nothing betterthan being able to go home and

have your familyaround you

Have you been to this country before?

Yes, I knew a little about the country as I’d visited twice before during my role with Guava, when we were reviwing the market and the opportunity to appoint a JaguarLand Rover dealer. I guess the country caught my imagination.

And what made you want to take this challenge?

There were a number of reasons Myanmar interested me. Firstly, I developed a love for living and working in Asia with it’s high energy, it’s young work force so eager to learn and contribute and it’s rich history and culture. I lived in China for 9 years before heading to the UK with RMA and Guava. Secondly, as I said, I can’t resist a challenge. And Myanmar presents exactly that. Finally, I find working with and developing a team from scratch very rewarding. The job can be very tough at times but coming to work and seeing an enthusiastic team growing the business is very satisfying.

Tell us one thing that surprised you when you first started your assignment in Myanmar

Initially I was taken aback by the quality and reliability of the infrastructure – electricity was unreliable with daily outages, and phone services were very poor. Things are getting better but some essential services still remain poor.

How did you adjust yourself, your working style into the new environment?

I knew and liked the business culture at RMA so I just continued where I left off at Guava. It was also clear, a start operation with so many new businesses would require a lot of energy and extra work but after 34 years at Ford Motor Company this wasn’t something that concerned me – You just need to commit yourself and do what it takes to get the job done.

Any funny/exciting stories over there you could share with us?

This may not be exciting for many people but having my wife, Guyla and Buddy, our cocker spaniel, arrive from California after my first six months was a pretty exciting time for me. It was great having the family back together again. When work provides many challenges, there’s nothing better than being able to go home and have your family around you.

We have also been able to travel and see some of the country, and the highlight so far was visiting Bagan: I’d thoroughly recommend going there to learn about the history of Myanmar and to see the thousands of pagoda and temples. This year we are planning more trips and will visit Inle Lake and Napalii Beach. Myanmar offers so much diversity in culture, landscape and cuisine so there is always something interesting to see or do.

“In the last 50 years, while the world (and Asia), has experienced incredible economic growth, Myanmar has virtually stagnated, as clearly shown by this simple growth.”

this, and selling Power Gen to support the telecom sector is a good example of this work. The agriculture industry is also significant here and it will continue to grow and there will be many opportunities here as manual labor is replaced by machinery. Equally there will be opportunities to develop factories, and develop city areas as the service industry grows and people move to the cities supply labor demand.

RMA’s range of offerings from John Deere, JCB, and Power Gen to Comin Engineering Services are all well-positioned for Myanmar.

“Myanmar is an exciting market as growth is set to explode in transport, water and utilities and real estate industries. Overall infrastructure projects are forecast to grow by five times in the next 20 years. Our heavy equipment side, with its construction focus, will benefit from growth in all three of these sectors.”

“I have a special feeling about Myanmar because in a 30-year Ford career, I had appointed a lot of dealers and the Myanmar appointment was my last appointment at Ford. So that brings special significance but ironically after I signed that deal, and I was happy to have Kevin and the team become the dealer because they’ve done such a good job for Ford in Cambodia and Laos, 6 months later I found one of my first assignments as President of RMA Automotive was back in Myanmar at the grand opening of the dealership!

One of the most pleasing aspects of that day was a story told to me by one of the sales team. She couldn’t believe that just six months before the site was just a dirt field – and on that day she had sold another new car! When she said RMA had changed her life it was very special to me, as she now had a career and was able to give her kids a better education. I was very proud to be working with RMA that day as we don’t just sell cars; we have a positive impact on people’s lives!”

hard work is never more rewarding than when receiving grateful feedback from customers

“We received an incredible reaction from the public when we first opened The Pizza Company and Swensen’s at Dagon Center in March 2014. The first few months were hectic, the restaurants were constantly full from morning to evening! I remember some customers sharing with me how impatient they were to see our brands open, having yearned for international standard dining concepts for so long.

A large majority of our large customer base is local. There is a strong local demand for international brands in the food & beverage industry and we are proud to be among the first movers in Myanmar. Of course, this advantage comes with its load of challenges such as recruiting people or organizing the supply chain but the Express Food Group team is up to the job! Passion and commitment is the real secret behind our successful launch and hard work is never more rewarding than when receiving grateful feedback from customers”

Jaguar’s dynamic and luxurious

wowsMotor Expo visitors

Despite a challenging luxury car market, the Jaguar XF 2.0 made quite an impression at the Bangkok Motor Expo, helping drive strong sales for Jaguar Land Rover during the 12-day show. Contemporary, individual and expertly crafted, XF combines Jaguar's renowned flair for style and luxury with smart technological innovation, setting the standard that other sports saloons can only aspire to. The XF was ably supported by the Range Rover Evoque, which continues to be the most popular Jaguar Land Rover model in Thailand. Just wait until buyers see the Range Rover Sport and Jaguar XJ, both of which we expect to see soon.

Attractive promotions and attentive, knowledgeable sales teams played a big part in achieving good sales during the Expo, and Richard Haigh, General Manager, City Automobiles, Jaguar Land Rover’s sole authorised distributor in Thailand, added, “Jaguar and Land Rover sales personnel demonstrated their professionalism and knowledge as they welcomed many new customers into the Jaguar Land Rover family. Whilst market conditions for luxury vehicle sales in Thailand become increasingly challenging for all stakeholders, we are very pleased to now be able to provide exceptional after sales care to our new clients, and will continue to grow both brands in the Thai market.”

Yangon is still not a foodie paradise, but there are new restaurants opening regularly and there is a fairly good choice available. Here are a few of my favourites:

The Lab Tapas and Wine Bar – this is a small cosy bar with a nice selection of tapas from around the world, supported by a decent wine selection and a great cocktail list. The best of the week for me is Paella on Monday, and look out for chef’s specials that he puts together depending on what is available fresh from the markets.

But it’s not western food – fresh seafood and some great cooking can be found at the Golden Crab. For some of the best food using local produce, try Sharky’s. It’s also a good deli for specialist breads and local delicacies.

“As Yangon continues its development, more and more interesting new eateries pop-up every week.” Mike Pease, General Manager, Capital Automotive

Dales JonesCountry Manager, RMA Myanmar

My favourite place is the Union Bar & Grill in the downtown area near the Grand Hotel. It’s designed in a more western style and serves excellent burgers and good beer. It’s a popular after work hang-out as it has a daily happy hour and there is a live band 2 or 3 times a week. There’s a good mix of expats and locals so it’s the perfect place to meet people if you are new in town.

I’m there every month attending AMCHAM (The American Chamber of Commerce MyanmarChapter) executive meetings so maybe I’ll see you there.

Escape Gastro Bar - This is a good bar that’s not too far from the RMA office. Three’s a good choice of light food, drink and music and it has an indoor and outdoor area. Later in the evening it feels a bit more of a night club so it’s a good place to go and party – I’d suggest heading there after 11pm and you can dance the night away!

Yangon Sailing Club - This is my favourite place to go and you’ll often find me there. Set on the banks of Inya Lake, this is a private club that opens up to the public on Friday nights. It’s a great place to catch up with friends while sitting on the beautiful lawns and sipping drinks and looking out onto the water. Perfect!
