Dear Parents,
Thanks to everyone who helped us celebrate Education week here at PPS! We
had a great open day and assembly and are very proud of our school and the
opportunities that it offers our students.
School Ambassador
On Thursday evening I was lucky enough to
attend the South Western Sydney
Ambassadors for Public Education
Recognition Ceremony at Revesby Workers
Club. It was a fantastic night showcasing the
best of Public Education across our region.
The absolute highlight was seeing our
ambassador, Louisse presented with her
certificate by the Director of Fairfield Schools
Network, Mr Daryl McKay. Congratulations Louisse!
Letterbox Drop
We are looking for volunteers who are willing
to help deliver leaflets to streets in our local
area. We would appreciate ANY assistance
you might be able to offer. If you can help,
please see Miss Suzy in our office.
Kindergarten 2014
If anyone has a child or knows of a child who
lives in our area - mainly Greenfield Park,
Bossley Park (some streets) and Prairiewood
(some streets) who is due to start Kindergarten
in 2014, we encourage them to contact the
school as soon as possible to arrange enrolment.
Places in our Term 4 Transition to School Literacy program are also filling fast. So
this would be an excellent opportunity to also put their name down for this exciting
program.
Parking
This is just a friendly reminder about not using the staff car park as a place to
drop off and pick up children. This is a safety issue and we ask that you park
on the street when dropping off and picking up your children.
Also, as you are aware, the front of the school is a bus stop, and is also a no
stopping zone. Please do not stop your car to drop off or pick up students in these
areas, (even if it is only for a minute) as it is dangerous for children when they are
rushing trying to get in and out of cars.
Also please remember to use the crossing to cross Prairie
Vale Rd. Small children crossing in between traffic are often
hard to see, especially to drivers of larger cars. Please take
the time to walk to the crossing when crossing the road.
Fairfield City Champion
Congratulations to our school
leaders (Sane and Chris were
away ) who represented us in
this week’s Fairfield City
Champion. You looked terrific!
Well done also to the SRC who
organised a very successful
Jeans for Genes Day at school
yesterday (Monday).
P&C Chocolate Fundraiser
Don’t forget that you can still return your note to receive your $10 Chocolate
Showbag. All money raised will go towards supporting the programs at
Prairievale PS! We appreciate your support and hope that by offering the
chocolates in smaller quantities that more families may be able to offer their
support. Prizes will be on offer for every student who purchases a bag.
Zone Athletics Carnival
Good luck to all of our competitors who will be attending the Zone Athletics
Carnival this Friday. Notes need to be returned as soon as possible. If you are
unable to attend, please see Mr Chand as soon as possible.
Don’t forget, that there will be NO PSSA this Friday because of the Zone
Carnival.

Education WeekEducation Week Why is Education so Important?
In 6A we believe that education is important. Education teaches us how to think in different ways – logically, mathematically and scientifically. The school environment teaches us how to interact with others. Surrounded by classmates from different cultures and language backgrounds, we learn together and from each other. We learn to respect other people’s opinions. We learn that there are many types of intelligence, and that everyone is good at something. Education gives us the opportunity to discover what we are good at and what we can offer. Our intelligence grows out of what we know and learn. The more we learn, the more opportunities we will have in the future. If our goal is to be productive, responsible and active members of society, education is the key to making that happen.
Imagine a life with no education. We wouldn’t be able to read, write or even communicate. We take education for granted. In 6M, we believe that education allows us to explore, understand and appreciate the world we live in. We believe that education is the key to success.
In 5S we believe education is important because education gives us a brighter future. It helps us to connect and communicate with people. Education teaches us about the world around us. Education will help to open our minds and make us more positive. Education can change our lives as well as those around us. We believe that education will help us to be anything and anyone we want to be. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world”.
In 5K we believe that education is important because it gives people the knowledge and skills to help them in the future and also to keep us safe. Education gives you the knowledge and experience to help you get a good job. People who are educated have more opportunities to choose a career they really like. Education gives you the skills to get through your social life. Skills such as learning to drive, cook, speak other languages and handling money are all important everyday abilities. Being educated helps keep people safe. Learning about drugs and diseases helps people make good decisions when in difficult situations. We can also physically learn to keep ourselves safe by learning first aid and self defence. Education is extremely important for people who want to live life successfully and safely.
Education WeekEducation Week
Education WeekEducation Week What are the most important things that
you learn at school?
In 4A, we think that the most important things we learn at school are the things we need in our future. Respect for ourselves and others so that we have happy friendships during our lives. Re-sponsibility so that we are able to look after ourselves and oth-ers close to us. Reading and writing are very important as we use them in so many situations in our everyday lives. The students in 4H decided that there are many important things we learn at school. The most import for 4H are, · to respect our teachers and other students · to concentrate in class and always do our best work and · always follow school rules In 4/5B we think that learning about maths is important because it will help us when we grow up. We also think learning about other cultures in community languages is valuable. In our class we like learning about the past and history, that’s why we think HSIE is a good subject to learn about. In 4/5B we also love to read!

We love school in 1S. Our favourite things about school are reading groups, and going to the library, doing handwriting and art, spelling and reading. We love playing with our friends and using computers. We like when we go to show Miss Perrin our work and we get stickers. We love our school and 1S! In 2M we like lots of things about school. We love playing outside and reading and learning. We love making new friends and doing gymnastics. We really like art and handwriting lessons. We LOVE our teacher too! 1n 1/2C we love school! We also love playing sport, doing gymnastics and going to the athletics carnival. We love going to gymnastics every Wednesday.
Class in FocusClass in Focus At the end of last term, 4A visited Old Government House in
Parramatta. We have been learning about life in the past.
As part of the experience we attended a classroom from 1815. The
bell was rung by hand and we had to line up in boys and girls lines.
Our teacher was Mrs Johnson and she was very strict. She had a
birch for hitting children if they were not doing the right thing. We
had to use chalk and slates to write on as paper was too
expensive. We had to repeat things many times as that was the
style of learning. We practiced how the letter ‘s’ was written
different ways back then. She taught us about the currency and
measurements they used. We had to answer using her name at the
end each time. At the end of class, the girls had to walk past and
curtsey and the boys had to bow and say “good morning Mrs
Johnson”. We are glad we go to school in 2013.
After the school we went around to look at Old Government House. This was the residence
of Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his family. We were put into small groups with a guide.
We were not allowed to touch anything as it was so old and precious. We found out that
they liked to build things symmetrically. There was no electricity and lighting was from
candlelight. They had fireplaces and shutters on windows for heating. In each room there
was a rope that was connected to a bell outside the servants quarters. A chamberpot was
kept under the bed in case they needed to go to the toilet during the night.
We all had a
great day!
