General Report

Members WelfareOur thoughts are with members who have been unwell, and/or are due to undergo medical treatment forillness. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Signin RegistersThe potential for community transmission of Covid19 continues to be a worrying scenario in NZ. Thereforewe will continue to take a responsible approach. Our signin registers must be used whenever you visit theworkshop for any reason, please.

FinanceMargaret reports that the Guild’s finances are in a healthy position.

MembershipConfirmed and paid membership of the Guild currently stands at 75 people. Members attending the AGM on July 18th 2020 voted unanimously to hold subscription fees at the same level as they were for 2019/20.

Workshop MaintenanceWe are a hobbyist workshop but we have a significant capital investment in expensive equipment.Equipment breakages continue to occur. Repairs and maintenance is a significant portion of our expensespending each year. Member misunderstanding and misuse of equipment is believed to be a significantcontributing cause.The new committee therefore has resolved to start rolling out a suite of Standard Operating Procedures(SOPs), and to follow through with an induction and familiarisation training scheme for all items of drivenequipment in the workshop. We will require members who want to use specific equipment to have firstlycompleted the training and be certified to use that item of equipment  even those who have had 50 yearsof trades expertise. We all need to change our culture of use, be prepared to step in and provide advice toothers and be receptive to that advice. By so doing, we can all do something positive to reduce breakagesand the Guild’s expenses.Currently the Jet Bandsaw is broken and out of action. A housing for one of the blade alignment bearings has shattered due (we believe) to it being overtightened. Repair work is underway.

There is a white board near the WL18 Woodmaster Lathe. Please use this white board to record anyequipment faults whenever you see something wrong in the workshop.

Neil Joynt Tour

We will be hosting a NAW workshop by Neil Joynt at the Guild’s workshop on Wednesday August 26th from 9:30am until 4pm. Neil will be demonstrating three techniques over the course of the workshop:   • Turning a Thin wall pot & pyrography   • Turning a Lidded box with inlay   • Turning a Tea Caddy.

We are extremely lucky to have this opportunity. Neil is a talented man and a fantastic demonstrator, as many of you have seen at our November Shows. We encourage all members to set aside the day to attend this workshop. Please register with Stephanie Simpson [email protected] or cell phone 022 1711790.The cost is $40 for people who are National Association of Woodworkers (NAW) Members and $85 for nonmembers of NAW  plus purchases of BBQ food and raffles. Colin Milne will have a sausage sizzle on ourBBQ for you to buy lunch and the Guild will provide (free) tea & coffee.

Scroll Saw Workshop 2021We plan to run another of our popular and successful Scrollsaw workshops on Saturday April 10th in theGuild’s workshop. More details will be rolled out in a future newsletter, but for preliminary information please talk with Glenn Whittaker or Laureen Tubby.

Tauranga Downtown Popup Shop Display Since the beginning of July we have had a display and shop sales of members work in the empty downtown store at 50 Devonport Rd. This will continue until July 30th. Feedback from the public about the skills of those who have had items in the shop display has been positive and most encouraging. Member sales to date have been of the order of $2,000.

2020 Show Greg Taylor and Alan Sciascia have taken over the 2020 Show coordination role from Phil Hansen.Unfortunately we have received word that the Tauranga Model Railway club has decided they will not participate in our Show event.However, on the positive side, Greg has been in discussion with the organisers of the Tauranga Art Society Garden Festival which will occur over the same weekend as our show. They have agreed to include our Show in their programme of activities and potentially we will have a signiifcant increase in Show attendees.The advice from the 2020 Show Coordinators is that members who plan to

sell woodwork at the show should focus some of their workshop effort on making  pieces which will suit a garden art audience. The Show Committee are seeking donations of members work to offer as raffle prizes at this year's event. Please note that the dates of the 2020 Show event are November 20th, 21st and 22nd. Put this in your diary now!
