The prophet Isaiah takes us behind the scenes to see the true signi- cance of the cause of the suering and death of Christ. “Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush Him and cause Him to suer . . . God the Father pun- ished His Son, our Savior, in- stead of us, and He put His back into the scourging and the hammering of nails be- cause a world of sin was being punished. But by Christ’s wounds we are healed. Through an incredible divine exchange, our guilt was put on Him and His holiness is put on us. Through your faith in Christ, the Father now looks on you as though you have never sinned, as though you are as holy as His Son. So, listen carefully . . . You are forgiven! There, I said it. And now I can’t unsay it. And you can’t unhear it either. We are not somewhat forgiven. We are totally for- given. No contingencies. God’s grace is rich beyond measure, and Jesus’ blood scrubbed us completely clean. Then why do we pester God to reconsider? Is it because we can’t let go of what God has forgiven? “But Lord, what about the time I . . .?” “And remember when I . . .?” God doesn’t have any exceptions, but we do. As Martin Luther reminds us: Satan loves to use those exceptions to create the doubt that he wants to lever- age into unbelief. Forgiveness means nothing if we don’t believe it. So, I will say it again. You are forgiven! And so am I! We are forgiven of indiscretions and unspeakable sins. We are forgiven of things we have laughed oand things that we are too ashamed to even dis- cuss with anyone. We are for- given of lapses in judgment and shameful lifestyles. It is all forgiven, and that changes everything about us. I can’t hear it often enough. Can you? You are forgiven! So let it go. Whatever it is that haunts you with relent- less guilt, please let it go. It’s time to move on because God’s forgiveness can’t be un- done. That’s what the season of Lent entails. It isn’t meant to dredge up guilt for sins al- ready forgiven. Lent is all about Jesus. That’s why the color of Lent is purple. Purple isn’t the color of our sin (those are scarlet). Purple shows that our royal and ma- jestic King came to us right- eous and victorious, yet lowly and riding on a donkey. Lent shows that our King has taken our sins, put them on Himself, died for them and with them on the cross, and buried them. When He came alive again, He shared that victory with us and made us children of God. So by all means, observe Lent with humility, because you used to be a slave to sin. But celebrate it with awe, because the King of glory has made you glorious—and forgiven! T W

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

By Kim Bestian Director of Children’s Ministry

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 says, “These com-mandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Why should we follow this com-mand? Deuteronomy 6:2 says, “…so that you, your children and their chil-dren after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keep-ing all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.” If we capture the directions from Deuteronomy 6, we find hidden clues for making impres-sions. These eight little words are helpful for parents to glean from as ways to follow God’s directives for impressing on their children.

TALK “Talk about them”– Com-municate and teach about God (The Bible, family devotions, daily life cir-cumstances, etc.)

SIT “sit at home”– Listening takes place at home as the ab-sorption of God’s commands is valued, being careful of what children observe, are exposed to, watch, and read (Technological de-vices, TV, tablet, cell phone, books, maga-zines, etc.)

WALK “walk along the road”– Wherever you go on your path

in life, you are to share with your children and others about Jesus (Home, school, public places, church, the neighborhood, etc.)

REST “when you lie down”– Place good things on the mind before the blessing of sleep to keep thoughts on God (Conversations about the day, prayers, Bible stories, hugs and kiss-es, etc.)

ACTIONS “when you get up”– Wake up thankful to God to begin focusing your day showing by what you do or model how a Christian follows Jesus–with the Lord begin your task– do all to the glory of God (Praying, sharing, caring, giving, loving, etc.)

TIE “Tie them as symbols on your hands”– Pass on Christian traditions that point to Christ, experience serv-ing others, godly memory reminders (Advent wreath, Christmas tree, prayer time, family banner making, prayer before meals, camping devo-tions and songs, give a piece of jewel-ry that brings Jesus to mind, etc.)

BIND “bind them on your fore-heads”– Hold tight to Scripture, val-ues, and priorities held with highest honor (Weekly church attendance,

family Bible time, decisions made, choices chosen, etc.)

WRITE “Write them on the door-frames of your houses and on your gates”– Godly written words and cor-respondences that come from your address—thank you notes and cele-bration cards, all who enter your home and those living in your house will visually be reminded of who you follow by what is on your walls and coffee table with books and maga-zines sharing about Jesus—this is what we believe (Witness and pro-claim what the house believes and follows, encouraging letters to kids at camp and college, Christmas greet-ings, Bible and hymnal on the piano etc.)

Parents are the first faith teachers to their children about God. The church is instructed to feed the lambs as Je-sus told Peter. Feeding is nourishing for growth. Nourishing food offers health. God’s healthy Word nourish-es so faith can grow and become strong. Children in worship with their parents and the whole church family can be nourished with healthy impressions. These impressions are so deeply rooted that children will want to follow Jesus and worship Him with the saints all their days. With eyes wide open, children see the saints listening, praising, praying, giving, and receiving God’s gifts. That is a big impression! You can be an impressive parent, and please pray for other parents to impress God’s commands on their children, too.

Snow Fun & Spoon Sundays February was a great month in chil-dren’s ministry! Snow Fun Sunday was snow wonderful! Parents and their children ate pizza and snow-flake cookies together, participated in a frozen penguin devotional, cut out snowflakes, painted on a canvas to make a family snow picture, placed English and Spanish Bible verses on the soup cans for our Hearts for Jesus mission project, and had the biggest indoor snowball fun fight Ascension has ever seen! Lots of laughs and fun togetherness concluded with popsi-cles and families sharing with other families about their families! Such joy was the time we had in Jesus! A big thank you to all the parents and other volunteers who helped! Another big thank you to everyone who brought cans of soup!

Best Practices Conference February was a special month as Concordia Publishing House invited me to autograph my book at the 9th annual Best Practices in Ministry conference in Phoenix, AZ. I was also speaker for a break out session there at Christ Church Lutheran. This was an amazing event where 2,767 profes-sional church workers and lay church

members gathered for enrichment and encouragement. A real blessing and boost for the church at large!

March Programs March is full of faith growing pro-grams for children at Ascension! March 3, the K.I.P. Club (Kid’s In Prayer) will gather to create prayer building power and other special helps in their faith journey of talking with God. Interpretative Liturgical Dance prac-tice also starts up that Sunday. Par-ents, please be sure to talk with me before that day if your child is inter-ested in participating. March 3, the Sunday School children will be par-ticipating in helping our quilters cre-ate patches, for our US soldiers, to be sewn on quilts the ladies are making. Wow! Such a great start to the month of March! Remember to bring your family to the spaghetti dinner and then worship together Ash Wednesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m.

Library Books are waiting for children to check them out in the church library! New ones have arrived and can’t wait for little fingers to hold them! Re-member that there are DVDs too! Check out the Kid’s Corner today! Thanks to Jean DeWitt for all her hard work in this amazing program that partners with parents!

Luncheon

March 10, 2019

Sunday @ 12:30pm

Please bring a dish to share (appe zer, main dish, salad, dessert —bring your favorite!)

Parents and younger siblings of youth welcomed! RSVP with Luz by March 3

Twenty years ago this month, I was turning fifteen. Despite it being two decades ago, I can still remember what was going on with me at that time. I hadn’t been to church in over two years, and it had been just as long since I had opened my Bible. I was so focused on myself, I couldn’t see anything or anyone beyond me. At almost fifteen, I remember being depressed, feeling isolated, and car-rying so much pain, anger, shame and guilt without realizing it.

I felt misunderstood, unseen, and unloved.

Ever heard that song Dear Younger Me by MercyMe? Every time I listen to it, I can’t help but think back to those teenage years I experienced. The words are so powerful, as words are meant to be, and they help me see God in my life during a time when I felt He’d abandoned me.

“If I knew then what I know now, condemnation would’ve had no power. My joy, my pain, would’ve never been my worth. If I knew then what I know now, would’ve not been hard to figure out, what I would’ve changed if I had heard…Dear Younger Me, it’s not your fault, you were never meant to carry this beyond the cross…”

There it is, in a simple few lyrics, my entire teenage years. I lived a life of condemnation, one where I carried my sins, and even the sins done to me, as if they were my only posses-sions. I guarded them and never let them out to light, while letting them hold me hostage.

One thing I can guarantee you is you’ll make mistakes. You’ll make choices you will later regret. You will live experiences that will hold you hostage. Ask your parents, your grandparents, the more experienced members of your church family—they will tell you this is true.

You know what else is true, though?

Those mistakes, choices, regrets and experiences do not define you—your relationship with your Savior is what defines you.

“Dear Younger Me; you are holy, you are righteous, you are one of the redeemed. Set apart, a brand-new heart, you are free indeed.”

So if I could write a letter to my fif-teen year old self (and to you), this is what it would say.

Dear Younger Me,

You are loved, you are not alone. The One who died for you and left an empty grave to give you eternal

life is with you. Although it seems like everything you’re carrying is so heavy, and no one will understand any of it, He is waiting for you to give it up. Fall on your knees, drop it all at the foot of the cross, and step into a new life of His love, His light, His peace, His joy, His comfort.

Everything you’ve gone through, and what you’ll go through, will always be less than what God has planned for you. Nothing you face will ever be bigger than the One who loves you . . . He loves you like crazy. So remember . . . you are holy, righteous, redeemed . . . you are free.

MINISTRY & BOARD REPORTS

Raise the Roof UDPATE Raise the Roof Update: Praise the Lord! As of February 25, we have reached 144,335, 82% of our $175,000 goal to pay off our Raise the Roof loan. Thanks to all who have contributed so gener-ously! During this season of Lent, when we pause in

our busy lives to reflect on our Savior’s passion and cruci-fixion, many of us “give up” something as a sign of our repentance and thankfulness. In thankfulness to our Cru-cified and Risen Lord for the forgiveness of our sins, which His sacrifice on the cross accomplished for us, please consider “giving up” a dollar a day (that’s only $30.00 a month) during Lent for "Raise the Roof." To God be the glory!

The Trustees are in need of additional people to be a part of the Trustees Board. Trustees ensure that the church property is properly maintained and looking nice and they also handle open and close procedures for the church.

If you are not ready to be-come part of the board, please instead consider vol-unteering to assist with the open and close duties. Small work projects around the church are also available if you can help.

Please contact Head Trustee, Kent Switzer at [email protected] or (915) 227-7589.

by Rev. Knud Skov, Danish Balkan Mission

Since 2015, streams of refugees and migrants have been coming to Eu-rope, and now hundreds of Iranians and Syrians have found themselves in Denmark. The Iranians (former Shiite Muslims) sought the Christian community, and some of them came into our Lutheran churches. Recent-ly Syrians and Africans (Somalis, Su-danese and those from the Berber countries like Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco), most former Sunni Muslims, have been looking for churches.

Not many in the Church here can speak Farsi, so the Christian mission efforts of anyone who can help are carried out by every means available, especially literature. As soon as we had access to the Farsi Small Cate-chism from LHF (Lutheran Heritage Foundation), we could let them read and comprehend for themselves. Since that beginning, the Prayer Book in Dari from LHF has arrived, which has been for many a wonder-

ful help for prayer be-cause Muslims come from their own tradi-tion of prayer, and they find it extraordinary and different that they can pray to our Heaven-ly Father.

The books have been distributed from 10 large refugee centers where everyone can at-

tend Lutheran instruction. In North Jutland, around 100 Iranians have sought out the Church. Some came from other church communities where there was no one who was prepared to give them catechism in-struction. The locals asked for a few catechisms and gave them to the Ira-nians. They began to read in groups—they learn through memori-zation—and as they have come to know Danish better, they've been able to express their faith and under-standing of the Lutheran faith clear-ly.

But there are also refugee centers near Barding in central Jutland, where Iranians wait to be sent back to Iran (a kind of limbo, since Iran will take no compulsory returnees). Every Wednesday evening, there is a cafe gathering where 50 men (women can remain in Denmark—they are not sent back) have more or less all read the Farsi Catechism, and some have come to faith. This has given these men hope, not only for asylum, but for the Hope that comes

through faith in Christ.

One of the pastors has written to me that Luther's Small Catechism in Far-si has become the basic book for cat-echism instruction. It is a pedagogi-cal masterpiece that has transcended time and culture.

Another man, an engineer who is a volunteer with the refugees, told me of an Iranian family who was in the process of being sent back to Iran. The father couldn't read, so he didn't know how he should prepare for the required interviews with the govern-ment authorities. In his interview, the father was asked why he had joined the Lutheran Church. His answer illustrated how he had learned to memorize the catechism because he replied that the Christian Church, first and foremost, is a place where love and loving people meet, not like in the mosque.

"Perhaps I can't give my life for my own children, but I have come to re-alize that Jesus went to the cross and died for me, so that my sins can be forgiven," he explained. "The spirit of Jesus has come and changed me, so that I am one with others who be-lieve in Him." This man had memo-rized the foundations of the Chris-tian faith ONLY because his family had read the catechism to him!

“I do not understand what I do. For what /want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do,” (Romans 7: 15), so spoke the Apostle Paul. Somehow he could not translate his best inten-tions into the actions he wished to do. This is the dilemma that has afflicted Christians who sincerely want to do God’s will.

Peter experienced it too. “Lord. I am ready to go with You to prison and to death” (Luke 22:33), he declared, and he meant it. His best intentions were to stick with his Lord, no matter what.

Thomas, too, expressed his inten-tions. When Jesus said He was going back to Judea where the Jews had tried to stone Him, the disciples tried to dissuade Him. Realizing that nothing could stop Jesus from going to his friend Lazarus, Thomas said to

the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him” (John 11: 16). He meant it too.

Yet, Peter denied knowing his Lord, and all the disciples fled in fear the night of His betrayal (Mark 14:50). What they wanted to do, they failed to do. What they wanted not to do, that is what they did. We understand the dilemma well. Like Peter, we weep when faced with our failures. But we do not despair, for we have learned that, while on our own we fail, with God we can do great things.

Christ went to His death on Calvary in order to buy us back from sin, death, and the devil. We are no long-er captive to sin and immobilized by it. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us” (Romans 8:37). Jesus lived the perfect life for us; He shed

His blood in payment for our sins; He suffered in our places; and He gives us grace that forgives our fail-ures and gives us more opportunities to bear the fruit He called us and chose us to bear. Truly, with God we can do great things.

Looking for a way to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in a meaningful way? Being a part of the Altar Care Committee is very rewarding. We insure that the Altar is prepared for all services so that our Lord is glorified by a proper Altar setting. In signing up for Altar Care, you will be given instructions both personally and given a handout. You may sign up to work with someone already dedicated to the month, either 8:00 a.m. service or the 10:30 a.m. service. Anyone who would like to serve the Lord in this capacity may contact the Church Office at 833-1009.
