Dear parents / carers

This autumn edition of the newsletter reflects a busy and productive half term. I can’t quite believe this, but yes, one sixth of the school year has already passed us by as we move into the month of November. In my introductory letter to parents in September I stated how well term had begun for students and staff. You will be reassured to hear that the positive learning culture continues to thrive. Students teaching and support staff continue to make me proud with their hard work and commitment to teaching and learning. I therefore start this letter by passing on my praise for their efforts and willingness to go that “extra mile.”

Open evening 2013.

What a successful evening for our school. The interest in Grainville School continues to spread throughout our community with approximately 300 visitors at our recent open evening, a school record! Students and staff showcased the curriculum with great confidence and enthusiasm leading practical demonstrations and presentations throughout the school. Feedback from visitors has been simply amazing. This feedback can be seen on our school website www.grainville.sch.je/About-Us/Feedback/

To further support parents with children in Years 5 and 6 in making decisions re transition, we will be hosting tours during the school day 5- 8th

November. The tours will be led by senior student leaders and will be appointment only due to time and space required for tours during a school day. For more information parents should contact Mrs Fitchett [email protected]

Curriculum news:

We continue to enjoy a special partnership with Highlands College and I am pleased to announce the intention to extend the vocational offer to students in Year 9 for next September (2014). Currently students in Year 10 have access to 5 courses taught at Highlands College on a Friday; Hair and Beauty, Hospitality, Motor Vehicle, Construction and Fabrication and Welding. It is my hope that in September 2014 new courses may also include Working in Public Service, Travel and Tourism, and Entrepreneurial Studies. This extension will further broaden the choice for students and support the blend of academic and vocational courses that they can now follow in Jersey and in doing so, develop essential skills for life.

Young Entrepreneurs:

Do you have a budding young business leader? After a highly successful inaugural year of the Young Entrepreneurs Challenge, a partnership with JCG and four major sponsors, Ogier, Ernst and Young, Jersey Telecom and Barclays Wealth, the second year of this innovative project will be launched in November. Last year 90 students were involved in running their own business with real money for a period of 6 weeks. Last year students made a combined profit of £6,197 with 66% of this, a total of £4,146 going to identified charities.

Simply amazing! If your child has ideas and wants to turn these into a small business, and trade for 10 weeks, then encourage them to take part in the 2014 challenge and make the most of the £100 start-up fund provided. As Richard Branson put it, “K.the true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer”. Get involved!

Public speaking: In partnership with JCG, Grainville students in Years 9 and 10 are taking part in a debating series kindly funded by Hawksford on Wednesday 6th November hosted by Matthew Price, BBC in JCG’s main hall: Doors open at 6.30 p.m. We encourage as many parents and students as possible to come and support our young debaters from Grainville.

IT strategy 2014-17: The Department for Education, Sport and Culture launched their vision for IT ’ Thinking Differently’ in October. This IT strategy will enable schools to bid for central funds to support new and exciting developments in teaching and learning using digital technology. As a school we are establishing an IT working group to plan a detailed 3 year programme of investment. Mr Clive Armstrong is the parent governor representative on the IT working group. Over the next 3 months the IT working group will consult with staff, students, parents and school governors, as well as local business leaders to map out our needs and plan for the introduction of new technology including Wi-Fi and ‘bring your own device’ to school. (More on this in the next newsletter)

Our school website www.grainville.sch.je is constantly updated. We encourage parents to take a look through the many useful tabs and menus to find out more about the curriculum, assessment dates, timetables, canteen menus as well as get the latest news on events here at Grainville. Take a look, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Commonwealth Society’s Essay Writing Competition

Grainville School made our first entry into the Royal and Commonwealth Society’s annual Essay Writing Competition last term. The competition is long established, this year being the 130th Anniversary, and attracted over 11,000 entries from 55 Commonwealth countries and territories. The Society give a suggestion of essay titles for students to choose from; this year under the theme of “Is change a good thing?” Grainville submitted 24 entries and from this three were selected by the International judging panel for Bronze Awards! Congratulations go to Eleanor Brayshaw, Ellie Carre and Bethany Moisan, all Year 8 for this fantastic achievement. It is hoped that after such a great success with our first entry this exciting opportunity can become a firm tradition for our school.

Mr Perrier – Teacher of English Year 9 Update Charity Day Champions Year 9 had the challenge of hosting the first Charity Event of this school year. Our chosen cause to support was Durrell; building on the fundraising carried out by the school over the past four years. Each Year 9 form group had to develop, organise and run their own money-raising event and, as usual, I was impressed with the passion and commitment shown by the students. Last week saw five days of fun events all run by the students. From Sponsored Silences, to guess the teacher games to the infamous Bush Tucker Trial, as featured in the JEP! Collectively, the students raised over £1200, some of this will go towards events and activities for Year 9 whilst the majority will go to support Durrell's conservation and environmental work. As always, I am proud of the skills shown by Year 9 and would like to pass on my thanks to all involved.

Year 9 - Talk on the Wild Side Over the coming months Year 9 students will begin thinking about their Option choices for Years 10 and 11. This naturally leads into conversations about future plans and how to achieve goals. As part of the preparation work for this, Year 9 will have a presentation from Rory and Finn McCann, two motivational speakers on Friday 8th November.

Rory, an international mural painter, and Finn, a world-class climber, are brothers. In their assemblies, the brothers speak of their own extraordinary artistic and adventurous exploits around the globe, the challenges they’ve overcome along the way and of how they are inspired by one another. Their assemblies and workshops, entitled ‘Aiming High’ are designed to raise aspirations, overcome challenges and ‘aim high’ for the future. This will be a great opportunity for our Year 9 students to start considering how they too can achieve their ambitions.

Mrs P Hobson – Head of Year 9

Café Science comes to Grainville

On Monday 14th October, top set Year 10 and 11 students had the unusual opportunity to meet with working scientists Dr Amy Hall from Durrell and Mr Scott Meadows from the Environment Department. A lively discussion ensued along the theme of “Invasive Species”. Will any of us look at our domestic cat in the same way again?

Top set Year 9 will have a similar opportunity on 12th November when the theme for discussion will be “Should the chough be re-introduced to Jersey?”

Many thanks to Nikki Holmes from Durrell for providing this opportunity.

Ms K Howell – Head of Science

Year 10 Update

In the first half term all of our Year 10 students have been getting to grips with the demands of their GCSE and BTEC subjects. In addition to this, some of the Year 10s have taken their first steps into the world of work by engaging in a weekly work placement (through WRL) or by studying a vocational course for the first time at Highlands College.

By the end of the year of course we hope that all of our Year 10s have received a taster of working life when in May they participate in 3 weeks work experience through Trident. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents/carers of all Year 10 students who ensured that their son or daughter met the deadline (25th October) for the completed Trident forms to be submitted. If there are any students who have not yet completed their Trident forms they should do so over the half term break so that they are ready to be handed in on the first day back in November. Year 10 students are reminded that any forms that come in after 4th November will be considered to be late and this could in turn result in students not being offered one of their preferred choices and possibly even having to resubmit their choices.

Mr Selby – Head of Year 10

Bush Tucker Trial

Back in September 9A decided that a Bush Tucker Trial would be a relevant link to Durrell and the environment, whilst raising funds in a fun and alternative way. Being able to exact revenge on a few teachers by feeding them weird and wonderful foods such as chocolate coated Brussels sprouts, octopus tentacles and more in the process was always going to be a convenient side-note. The format was decided to be students versus staff, using a points system to decide a King / Queen of the jungle. The whole event and its organisation was dependent on team-work, but Ellie Carre, Lara Peters, Ema Araujo and Alana Ricou ably lead the way. They had some great support from the rest of the group closer to the time and most students had a role to play, ranging from food servers to score keepers during the event itself.

Paige Nicholls vs Miss Rosser Joel Lucas-Villar vs Mr Grocott Shaynee Whiteman vs Mr De Gruchy Bradley Keith vs Mr Macready Alex Le Put vs Mrs Morris

Daniel Minto and John Polson did a great job of keeping the crowd informed of the progress, whilst the audience did a great job of clapping, cheering and jeering the contestants. The audience raised over £80 by paying a 50p entrance fee to watch during lunchtime.

9A would like to thank all contestants, supporters and staff for ensuring that the event was a successKso much so that it became almost impossible to judge an outright winner!

Mr Cole – 9A Form Tutor

Urgently needed The Design Technology Textiles Department urgently need pillows and duvets (clean) that can be used as stuffing for soft toys and cushions. Anything you can donate will be much appreciated Mrs Lloyd-Edwards – Head of Design Technology £427 MacMillan donation from Team Odyssey

Team Odyssey; last year's year 11’s Matt Ellis, Lorna de Freitas, Amie Townsend and Jade and Jasmine Beaument, took part in The Entrepreneurship Challenge 2013. They organised a car boot sale and family fun day and made £427 profit. The team chose to donate all of the profit to MacMillan Cancer Support and went to their Jersey headquarters during the summer holidays to donate the cheque. Following a presentation to the corporate partners from Ogiers, Ernst and Young, Jersey Telecom and Barclays Wealth, the team attended the Entrepreneurship Challenge Awards evening at Ogiers. At this event they won the Community Award for their efforts. The challenge was a great opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial skills, such as organisation, team work and communication. The challenge will be run again this year to find Grainville’s budding entrepreneurs, under the new name Jersey Student Business Challenge and will be launched in assemblies in November. Start coming up with your ideas now!

Miss Carroll – Head of Business Studies

Second hand uniform needed We are looking for parents / carers to donate old school uniforms to be used by our staff to help support students in emergencies. If you can help please contact Mrs Day on 822936 or email [email protected] when you can. Mrs Day – School Participation coordinator Miss Whizzy gets Whizzy!! With the Jersey Rally approaching it was time to re-design my rally car. This year my sponsors were Portside Studio, (my hairdresser in St Aubin!) and we decided to design the car with a nautical theme. A big thank you to Brody Boleat in Year 8 who designed the bonnet with a lighthouse which fitted our makeover perfectly. Completing the look, Miss Walker has added a porthole with a “Nemo” fish to the roof. The car design was popular with the spectators and other visiting teams from the UK. I was very proud when people asked if they could take a photo whilst in service.

Page 8: Newsletter October 2013

Page 7

The beginning stages of this year’s event were very wet and slippery especially on the Friday. We started the rally as car 71 and by Friday evening we were placed 39th. Unfortunately the only excursion on the Archirondel stage was to rip half the bumper off, luckily we arrived into a 12 minute service and my team quickly re-attached it! Saturday morning dawned and once the sun came out the road dried and the St Öuen and Greve de Lecq stages were awesome!. I was therefore very disappointed when I had to retire after four stages with a blown cylinder head gasket, the end of the road for Miss Whizzy .

There were many positives to be gained from the weekend and we’ll be back again next year to try again.

Many thanks to Team Whizzy, Express Autoparts, Holeshot Signs and Matt’s Motors for the preparation work. Rallying is a team event after all!!

Miss Grant-Pearce (aka Miss Whizzy) Autism Jersey are delighted to announce that they have a newly opened Boutique / charity shop in Bath Street (next to 7 Angels restaurant) The Boutique is managed by Karen Dyson, a Grainville school parent governor and Catherine Tubb, both mums of very complex boys with Autism. We would be delighted to see you in the shop, where we are sure you will pick up a bargain! We always need good quality women's, men's and children's clothing and accessories. If you have any donations please drop them into our shop, or we will be happy to arrange collection. Either e-mail [email protected] or telephone 871888. Thank you!

JCG/Hawksford Debate – We’re Invited!

Grainville School is privileged to have been invited to be part of the third Hawksford/JCG debate. The topic of the debate is: ‘This house believes it is better for Jersey for me to stay than go’. There will be two teams putting across their arguments. These teams are mixture of JCG 6th form students and year 9 and 10 students from Grainville. It promises to be a thought provoking evening in which votes will be cast before and after the debate with a chance for the audience to ask questions to each team. Also, behind the event will be the marketing team responsible for advertising the debate. This is a joint team of JCG 6th form and Year 11 students from Grainville. The Grainville Debate Team: Lara Peters, Ellie Carre, Jonathon Kene Jack Evans-Rentsch, Jake Osbourne, Liam Cottington The Grainville Marketing Team: Michael Howe, Connor Morley, Georgia Christie Kelly Gomes If you wish to attend this fantastic event please rvsp to: [email protected] or for more information contact Miss Quenault on [email protected]

Year 9 Thinking More Critically

20 students took part in the Year 9 Gifted and Talented day this half-term. The session focused on thinking more critically. They worked as teams and earned points throughout the session based on how critical their thinking and questioning was. The session finished with a presentation by each group of a household product they had designed. The students were encouraged to use the critical thinking skills in their learning across all subjects to enhance and extend their knowledge, understanding and application.

Dance Workshop

20 Year 8 and 9 students had a wonderful opportunity to take part in a fantastic dance workshop delivered by Motion House, a UK professional dance company. Every student thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of their two hour workshop where they were challenged, inspired and motivated to try a range of dance activities with two highly professional, caring and talented performers. Not a single minute was wasted and every child was catered for and left with an enormous sense of pride after achieving so much in such a short space of time. The year 9 students also had the opportunity to watch the professional dances in concert at the Jersey Opera house.

Miss N Quenault – Gifted and Talented Coordinator

Grainville Army Cadet Force Continues to Grow. This September we saw a record number of Year 8 students joining Grainville's ACF Detachment. They are divided into blue, red and green sections and have been training hard. All the groups have been fantastic and have started working through their Basic training to hopefully earn their Royal Jersey Militia Berets by Christmas. In the next few weeks the sections will start competing against each other to try and win the best Section competition and the top new recruit will be awarded the Houzé Trophy.

This year is the first time Senior Cadets have been used to help with the training and mentoring of Cadets and Grainville's Senior Cadet, Corporal Rachel Murray has been doing a great job of looking after Red Section. We are all very proud of our Grainville ACF Cadets who have proved themselves some of the most capable youngsters we have worked with. They are fantastic role models for the new generation of Year 7 students who we hope to welcome into the ACF next yearK. we will update you again next time on the Year 8's graduation. It has been an exciting term for the Maths department this term with many activities going on, big changes in the department and achievements to celebrate. The summer results saw the department’s best ever results with 56% of students gaining grades A*-C in their final GCSE exams. This surpassed expectations and is testament to the hard work of the students and their teachers. Extra credit must also go to Kayleigh Pryor who achieved an A* grade, gaining 100% in her Unit 2 exam. Well done! This term we have taken a number of Year 9 and 10 students to Hautlieu to experience a Mathematics Masterclass run by MEI (Mathematics in Education and Industry) which promotes and supports the subject through problem solving. The students were a credit to the school and enjoyed taking part in the afternoon. Next we have the Intermediate Maths Challenge to look forward to in the Spring term where we hope to gain some more Gold and Silver certificates. You may have seen in the news recently the changes to GCSE’s taking place this year regarding re-sits and publicising results. I assure you that every step is being taken to ensure our students have every opportunity to achieve their best in Mathematics and we will be continuing to do this regardless. Mr J Cheeseborough - Head of Mathematics

Horizon Update It’s coming to the end of our first half term already and our students are really beginning to settle in to Horizon. Routines have been established and students are learning to organise themselves with equipment and books.

As a reminder students must have with them: • Home-School Planner • Pencil case containing a blue or black pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, sharpener •Mathematical equipment including angle measurer • Calculator for Mathematics • Books for lessons

We also require students to be in the full school uniform. They must have: • Blazers on at all times • Plain black trousers for boys and girls • Light blue school shirt (tucked in!) and school tie • Tank top / jumper • Plain black shoes, suitable for school wear Things have not completely gone our way with the camping trip having to be postponed due to poor weather. We are looking for an alternative date during the summer term and will keep you informed as soon as we have times and dates confirmed. "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"

Page 11: Newsletter October 2013

Page 10

In Horizon we are encouraging reading at every opportunity. We would like our students to have a ‘reading for pleasure’ book with them at all times. In the mornings when students arrive there are two dedicated rooms for reading. Children are encouraged to sit in these rooms, if they are in Horizon, and read. Reading is a very important skill that is required in every lesson; by reading everyday our students will be able to access the curriculum better.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents for coming to the Settling In evening. It was fantastic to see you all again and we are looking forward to continuing to work closely with you to support your son/daughter as they work through their first year in Horizon. Should you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact your son/daughter’s Form Tutor.

Have a great half term and we will all be back ready to start the new half term on Monday 4th November 2013.

Mrs Bisson – Head of Year 7 (Horizon)

Our young students showing awareness of global issues:

Malala Yusafzai was short listed for the Nobel Prize this year. Malala is the young girl shot in the head by the Taliban because she fought for the freedom rights of girls in Pakistan. In July, a class of Year 7 were studying “The Bread-winner”, a story of a girl having to dress a boy to enable them to go out and work in Afganistan, and saw the similarities in the two stories. After comparing the two stories 25 students decided to write letters of admiration and support to Malala which were sent to her recently.

Prison! Me? No Way! Grainville hosted a multi-agency day co-ordinated by the Prison Me No Way (Jersey) Team on Tuesday 22nd October. Students were placed in ‘Wings’ lead by police officers to simulate the experience of being a ‘prisoner’ for the day. Each Wing took part in a series of interactive and educational workshops with the underlying theme of Choices and Consequences. These included 30 minute sessions with: the Ambulance Service, Fire Service, Drugs awareness team, HMP Hull (prison life), Seat Belt awareness team and HMP Jersey (La Moye). The students seemed to particularly enjoy the ‘Street Scene’ session, whereby students were part of a role play exploring consequences of being lead by peer pressure. The clement weather allowed the year group to witness a Police Dog demonstration, which was also very impressive.

Overall, the day was a huge success, mostly due to the behaviour of the Year 8 students alongside the engaging and informative sessions that were provided for them. The Prison Me No Way day serves an integral part of our Personal, Social, Health Education programme and I would like to thank the parents, carers and pastoral team for their support of this. Ms Ash Head of Year 8

Congratulations to: Caitlin Fitzsimmons, Harry Smith, Lillian Heslam and Charlotte McFarland who have been selected to represent Grainville in The De Putron Challenge. This is an Inter-Island School Challenge that can best be described as a cross between Mastermind, University Challenge and Trivial Pursuit!

This takes place on Monday 11th November at The Hotel de France from 16.30-18.00. Friends, family and teachers are encouraged to support the Grainville Year 8 team and are warmly invited to attend this event. There is also a ‘banner competition’ amongst the supporters, with the most imaginative banner winning a prize. All preparations will be take place during tutorial time in the lead up to this event. Sports Awards Evening Thursday 26th September 2013 On Thursday 26th September 2013 the Grainville PE Department held its Sports Awards Evening to celebrate the successes of the 2012-13 academic year. It was lovely to see so many guests from our community present for what has now become an annual event to celebrate the successes and achievements of Grainville students in the sporting field. It was also with great pleasure that we welcomed Jon Brennan, Jersey’s Rugby Clubs 1st XV prop, who kindly agreed to present the awards and say a few words about his sporting life. There were over 200 students and parents present at the evening, this is just a small number of the students who have taken the opportunity to get involved in school sport here at Grainville School. However we felt it only fitting to recognise those students that have excelled in many ways and we wanted to reward their achievements and celebrate with their parents and our community. It was an absolute pleasure that the evening was supported by Jon Brennan who spoke wonderfully about his pathway to professionalism and gave a few words of advice to the students as to how they can give themselves the best chances to succeed both on and off the sports field. The evening was a great spectacle of sporting brilliance, recognition of talent, hard work and dedication. Thank you to everyone that helped organise the event and thank you to everyone who attended, making the evening so successful.

Mr Wood - Head of PE.
