Pot Luck Lunch at Shuswap Lake is currently scheduled for June 8. Norma Browne noted that rising water concerns may require a deferral. The limit of 20 participants is nearly reached, and those signed up will be contacted should a deferral be needed. The deferral date, should it be necessary, will probably be Sept 8.

The City of Kamloops will hold an open house at the City Greenhouse on May 27, 2017. Donna will announce this at the next general meeting.

HIKING GROUP 2017Hike in Kenna, May 4The April 20th hike in Kenna Cartwright Park had to be cancelled because of bad weather, but the weather was superb for the rescheduled hike on May 4th. Bill led the hike through interesting areas of the park with superb views of the north Thompson valley and north Kamloops, leading ultimately to Lavaflow Point with a magnificent view overlooking Kamloops Lake. There were 18 in the party: Bill, Katy and Colin, Cherryl and Rick, Midge, Glenda and for a short while Vern and his faithful four-legged companion,

Hike to Gibraltar Rock, May 18Our second hike in May was to Gibraltar Rock above Paul Lake on Thursday May 18th. We were a much smaller group led by Jim. Colin, Katy and Gisele from our club, Becky and Sandy from the Thompson Rivers Club and Carola from the Grasslands Club. Gisele’s husband Gunther joined us as a visitor for part of the way. The day was fine, the weather warm and the hike really pleasant, initially along the edge of Paul Lake with Balsam Root in abundance on the slopes and the climb to the summit of the rock not too strenuous! The view from the top is spectacular with 360 degrees views. Not to be outdone by Bill, Jim arranged for

beaver chomping displays, a painted turtle and a spat between an osprey and an eagle to entertain us!

seven members of the Thompson Rivers Club and three members of the Grasslands Club. Bill not only arranged for glorious weather but for a pair of bluebirds to be seen, a loud squabble between an eagle, hawks and ravens, and a guest appearance of Catherine Pendrel on the trail. Following the hike a few of us repaired to Duffy’s Pub for a hearty lunch and a ‘wet of the whistle’. Jim will have his work cut out to match Bill’s organiza-tional ability when he returns for the next hike!—Colin James

TOUR OF WETLANDS IN BARNHARTVALE

On May 18, some members enjoyed a ‘walk and talk’ with Milt Stanley and Heather at the Wetland in Barnhartvale. There were 20 of us attending and we really enjoyed all the information we were pre-sented with. So much goes on there that we have no idea of. They are a busy group of volunteers who could use so much more help! A most enjoyable few educational hours we enjoyed! The lunch was at the Tumbleweed Pub. —Donna Cassidy

Four hearty rain walkers, Deidre, Shirley, Caroline and Midge were treated to this wonderful sight of geese with a flock of goslings

Editor. A couple of weeks ago, I suggested that I would have a section in our news letter in honour of Stewart McLean who was best known for his show on CBC. His show included a part for all Canadians to write a short story and send it to him. He promised to read them all and pick one of them which he would read on his show.

This poem is the last story I received. It is from Felicity Klassen.

Margaret has till Monday to empty out her home.Margaret has till Monday to close up every room.

She remembers children’s laughter and Jim’s snorting snore.

Sandboxes, pets, game nights, family dinners, are no more

Kids, friends and Jim all in a distant past and then - the quiet years.

Ghosts of memories, possessions and romance. MeadowBrook welcomes seniors and gives

the family relief.“A lovely place...so caring and so safe…”

Margaret has till Monday.

Margaret has till Monday to empty out her home.Margaret has till Monday to close up every room.

Tea cups, crystal wine flutes, with Bunnykins bowls lovingly wrapped in tissue

Secretly left at thrift stores so their unwantedness not an issue.

Old records, tapes and videos discarded with obsolete machinesShe remembers dancing, laughing and singing in her cherished house

That she cleaned and dusted until the polish gleamed.

The outdated couch is too large and cumbersome for small modern spaces

So it and the dining set are off to unknown places MeadowBrook is so comfortable...such a caring place.

Margaret has till Monday.

Margaret has till Monday to empty out her homeMargaret has till Monday to close up every room.

Paint has covered marks of the children’s spurts of growth.

Within these walls she sustained and loved them all.Now purpose and usefulness have

gone with her mother call.As her beauty, balance and sharp wit slowly fade.

Names slip away and new people replace. But not as easily to get to know in a new place.

She remembers the happy times in this dwelling.A life well lived and fulfilled

but now everything has changed. Her new abode has been dutifully arranged.

MeadowBrook will be lovely...such a caring place.Margaret has till Monday.
