HSC ILLNESS & MISADVENTURE FORMS HSC students begin their HSC Examinations this week. Students who are ill or who suffer a misadventure need to present at school to complete examinations where possible and complete the relevant paperwork which can be obtained from the school. If it is not possible to attend an examination contact needs to be made immediately to the school and a medical certificate needs to be presented for further consideration.
HALL PAINTING A big thankyou must go to the following group of dedicated parents, students and teachers, Sally Kirby, Lisa Burgess, Maddison Burgess, Belinda Mills, Rolph Lapins, Audrey Brown, Claire Ryan and Lydia Ebert, who during the first week of the school holidays gave up their time to paint the back wall of the Hall. Also we must send a huge thankyou to Brad Webb who kindly allowed the team to use his painting equipment. Already it has given the Hall a fresh new feel. The remaining walls will be painted in the upcoming weeks. We hope that by the end of the 2015 school year, all painting will be complete and we will be on the way to establishing a rotating display of works by Molong Central School students. Don't forget you can see these improvements when attending school assemblies.

NSWPSSA ATHLETICS
Four Primary students from Molong Central will travel to Sydney Olympic Park to represent Western Region this week. Ella and Carter Kirby will be competing in the 100m and 200m, Lilly Weekes will compete in the 100m and Kara Yelland will compete in the shot put. This is a fabulous opportunity for these students to compete at an Olympic venue and is an experience that they are sure to treasure for years to come. Good luck in your events and we look forward to hearing about your performances when you return.
COURTNEY DAVIES REPRESENTS MCS AT CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION
MCS student Courtney Davies will participate in a series of workshops that will allow her to gain insights into the role, composition and powers of the Senate. Courtney also has the opportunity to be selected to represent NSW at the National Constitutional Convention. I am sure this opportunity will benefit Courtney not only in her studies but also in her leadership role as Molong Central’s Vice- Captain.

WELCOME BACK
How quickly this year has gone. Welcome back to Term 4. This is always a busy Term for staff and students. The HSC started this week so we wish all our Year 12 students the best in their exams. This is the culmination of their schooling career and for them the end of their time here at Molong Central. I was thrilled by the maturity they displayed in their final week’s activities last Term and hope that this maturity will serve them well as they prepare for a life outside school. I would also like to now encourage our Year 11 students, who this Term start their HSC courses, to be focussed on their work from the very start of the HSC course. All too often students are rather relaxed in their approach during Term 4 thinking the HSC is a long way off, but, the work they do now is examinable so they need to be on top of the work from Day 1, Term 4. Any assessment tasks from here on will form part of their HSC mark. RYPEN CHALLENGE 2015
RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) is a 3 day camp and program for Year 9 High School students. Students learn from achievers in the worlds of business, sport and entertainment and presenters will talk at keynote sessions and share their experiences. It is at Boorambola Sport and Rec Camp, Wagga Wagga from 20-22 November. Supervision, accommodation and transport is provided and Molong Rotary Club would like to financially support interested students.

The Honeywell Engineering Summer School is run by the Institute of Engineers and provides students with a week-long practical engineering experience at Universities and engineering sites in Sydney. The Honeywell Engineering Summer School is held in December, with 100 Year 11 students selected from NSW and the ACT. Students gain a better understanding of engineering as a University and career option as well as broadening their horizons and experiencing the interaction with practicing engineers and their peers. Throughout the week-long program, students are introduced to five universities, including University of New South Wales (Host University), University of Sydney, University of Western Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, and University of Wollongong. The students are also taken behind the scenes of some major engineering companies and projects to see engineers at work. FIRST AID COURSE
On 21st & 22nd September (first two days of the school holidays), Josh Amberge, Tarasa Bell, Jordan Campbell, Sophie Clayton, Jake Davis, Rachael Geddes, Zac Miles, Sam Mills, Chrystal Norberry, Shaun Paterson, Brooke Watts, Chelsea Wilson, Amanda Fowler, Lin Eccleston and Tony Taylor had the opportunity to gain qualifications and develop their skills in providing first aid under the expert training of Mr Terry Hanlon, Academy Trainer from Surf Lifesaving NSW. This two day course consisted of modules covering theory, practical scenarios and CPR. All participants were assessed in practical applications as well as a final written test. I am pleased to say that all participants gained the qualification which lasts for 3 years. (Please note the CPR component needs to be assessed every 12 months). This qualification also enables Josh Amberge, Tarasa Bell, Jordan Campbell and Rachael Geddes to obtain their full Certificates for the TVET courses they were studying in Years 11 and 12, Fitness Cert 3 and Outdoor Recreation. It was also a requirement for Aspire students Jake Davis and Brooke Watts. Many thanks and congratulations to all who participated in the course and especially Mr Terry Hanlon for his excellent instruction over the two days. Mr Tony Taylor, Careers Adviser

Personal Development Day for Stage 3 Last term all students in Years 5 and 6 participated in
a very successful Personal Development Day at Molong
Central School.
Students participated in the following sessions:
1. First Aid
2. “Where do we come from”
3. Puberty session – boys and girls

some curly questions to answer in the Puberty Session.
Many thanks to Miss Brown and Mr Paterson for
giving their time to help out on the day.
At lunchtime the students enjoyed a sausage sizzle
before a presentation on Cyber Bullying with our local
Police Liaison Officer.

YOUTH & OPEN CATEGORIES
Sport and Recreation are again holding the Central West Winter Sport Volunteer Award. It’s the end of the winter sporting season, but it’s not too late to recognise the efforts of the outstanding volunteers who keep sport going in our communities. The Award has separate categories for both open and youth (25years and under) to recognise the importance of all aged volunteers in grass root sports. In 150 words or less tell us how your volunteer is worthy of being nominated. All nominees will receive a certificate, with the winner and runner up being awarded $250 & $100 (respectively) to spend on approved sports development programs. It’s a great way to say thank you to a coach, committee member, official or manager. It’s a simple process that won’t take long, but will make the nominee feel valued as a volunteer. Nominations can be made online via the Sport and Recreation website sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/volunteeraward or call 6362 6623.
Nominations close Friday 6th November 2015

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition
Blue Mountains Storm clouds gathered and a chill wind blew as the group gathered together to bid farewell to their wailing
parents. Substantial packs were loaded into the awaiting cars and off they headed, bound for the remote,
stormy wilds of the far southern Blue Mountains.
Year 10 students Tieke Thomas, Jessica Burgess and Brooke Watts, along with Jacob Davis and Caitlyn Watts
of Year 9, joined Mr and Mrs Costa and Miss Brown for the first of their Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh
Expeditions – taking them deep into the Megalong Valley and the rugged Wild Dog Mountains.
As the cars turned off the highway at Blackheath dark clouds loomed ahead, with a dramatic lightning show in
the mountains to which they were heading, thunder boomed loudly through the valley…it was looking as
though they were in for a wet trek.
On arrival at the start of the track, however, the clouds parted, the storm moved to the south and the stars
came out.
Packs were loaded onto backs, straps adjusted and head torches fitted before our little troopers strode
purposefully off, into the cool, dark night – a couple of hours walk still ahead of them before they could pitch
their tents at upper Breakfast Creek and rest their weary bodies.
Camp was reached at 21:00 hours (that’s 9pm for those of you who do not wear khaki) and all were soon in
their sleeping bags, dreaming happy dreams of a comfortable mattress and real pillow.
The next two days involved trekking through rugged country – involving navigating though rough, untracked
terrain, along dramatic ridge tops and thick forest, with sections involving climbing up and down steep rocks
and cliffs.
Their effort was rewarded at the end of the second day with a stunning view from Splendour Rock into the far
southern wilderness with innumerable ridges and deep gorges extending off as far as they could see in all
directions.
That night, camp was set in a cave, where dinner was cooked on small camp cookers and a relaxed time was
had around a campfire.
Jessica acted like an alien and Mr Costa prepared a dessert, the quality of which was called into question by all
except Jacob, who is known for his fondness of overly sugary substances. Miss Brown’s cup of noodles really
hit the spot.
The next morning the intrepid explorers set off nice and early to head out along a forested ridge for another
fine view of the surrounding country before descending very, very steeply down Black Horse Ridge – a near
vertical, scree-covered, knee-jarring descent of over 400 metres.
All were keen for a rest when the creek was finally reached at the bottom. Mrs Costa (Bob) and Jessica were
sporting matching “owies” where they had each managed to graze their hands during minor slips on the
descent.
The final leg back up to the cars was through a steadily climbing valley, which was filled with stinging nettles,
into which Tieke managed to fall head first (but still emerged with her usual smile).
Caitlyn and Brooke powered their way to the top of the hill, where they were soon joined by the rest of the
party, who were all exhausted, but happy to have completed such an epic journey for their first Duke of
Edinburgh Expedition.
The drive home was very quiet as all participants pondered some of the deeper questions of life, the universe
and the significance of their accomplishments over the previous two days (or they may have just been asleep).
All of the group are to be congratulated – this trip was a serious undertaking, through remote and rugged
terrain and all conducted themselves admirably.
Mr Kevin Costa, Teacher
