Our current value is….. Resilience means when faced with difficult and challenging situations and people, being able to stop getting extremely angry, down, or worried. Controlling my behaviour when I am very upset and calming down within a reasonable period of time and bouncing back to work and play. Please consider discussing Resilience with your child/ren this week.

Addison’s Big Hair Cut for Charity

In October this year, Addison made a very

big decision to make a difference to

children who are sick with cancer, by

cutting and donating her hair to Hair with

Heart.

Addison cut off 35cm and raised an

amazing $1,056.34.

WELL DONE ADDISON!

BEFORE AFTER

Chaplain Chat Thank You for a wonderful year! It always astonishes me how fast the year fly’s by. I have found that is definitely the case for 2017. I have truly en-joyed every minute of being at Marmion Primary School this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for being so welcoming and supportive. I have really enjoyed getting to know many students through one-to-one pastoral care and group activities.

Last Wednesday we wrapped up The G.R.E.A.T Girls Games with the Year 6 girls. G.R.E.A.T Girls stands for: Genuine, Re-spectful, Enthusiastic, Ap-proachable and Trustworthy Girls. The aim was to give the girls strategies to develop their interpersonal skills ready for High School. During lunchtimes the girls worked in

teams and were given different challenges to overcome. Our final challenge was a giant Chess match between two Year 6 girls teams. It was fantastic to see good team-work, communica-tion, problem-solving, strategising, and leader-ship skills being used by all. I can really see that they are ready to over-come the challenges that High School will bring.

I enjoyed running a number of ‘Recess Friend’ sessions with Year 3 students this term. Together we read a book ‘The Recess Queen’ by Alexis O’Neill and discussed how to be respectful friends particularly during recess and lunch. Each student made a ‘Recess Friend’ certificate and shared their own ideas of how to be a good recess

friend with each other. I truly wish each of you a Merry Christmas, hoping it is a fun time for all. May you also have some quieter moments to pause and reflect on the good things that lift you up. I look forward to being involved in the Marmion School Community in 2018. Have a great summer holiday break.

Louisa Read, School Chaplain

Thanks to everyone for making Mr Buck’s farewell last Thursday so memorable for him.

Looking After Our Environment Throughout this year, the students of Room 9 have spent time researching, collating and sharing facts about the devastating effects of plastic pollution on our environment. All the information, along with everything the students have been doing to help raise awareness of the effects of plastic pollution has been added to their Room 9 Ban the Bag website:http://room9banthebag.weebly.com As a result of our research, we have all made a commitment to make small, but vitally important changes that will reduce the amount of plastic ending up in our environment. We would like to encourage the whole Marmion Primary School community to get on board and do their bit to help.

How Can YOU Help? Below are some simple, yet effective ways to reduce the use of plastic in your everyday lives. We challenge you to adopt as many of these alternatives as you can.

The above examples are just a few of the many ways YOU can start to make a difference. For more information, please visit our website: http://room9banthebag.weebly.com

ROOM 9BAN THE BAG PROJECT

Zaiden and Addison were on their way home from Hillarys Marina when they saw a plastic bag floating in har-bour. They not only recognised that this might be a hazard to marine life; they did something about it and dove in to retrieve it. Great work boys!

The average person uses 4-6 toothbrushes a year, and if they’re made from plastic, each of these toothbrushes will take up to 1,000 years to break down. You’d be surprised how many toothbrushes are found on beaches each year! Try using a more environmentally friendly tooth-brush made from bamboo.

When shopping for fruit and veg at your supermarket, use the brown paper bags that you find next to the mushrooms and potatoes. These are a much friendlier alternative to the plastic bags provided.

One of our local IGA stores wrote to inform us that they go through 14 000 plastic bags each week. If we multiply that by 52 weeks, that’s 728 000 plastic bags per year for just one shop!!! Remember to take your reusable bags when you go shopping.

It is estimated that Australians use 1 billion takeaway coffee cups a year. Most of these contain a thin layer of plastic meaning that they are NOT able to be recycled. Get yourself a reusable coffee cup. You’ll find some cafes offer a discount if you bring your own.

Over 500 million straws are used daily worldwide for an average of 20 minutes before being discarded. This in incredible! Metal and glass straws are available as an alternative.

REFUSE plastic straws.
