JUNE 2020

Term two has certainly been a busy term in which Burnside State High School staff and students have had to work extra hard to engage in on-line

learning either at home or school. We are all looking forward to the start of Term 3 where we will return to normal operations of the school.

I think being able to have our year assemblies and whole school parades will bring back that sense of school community. We have a very busy Term 3

approaching and it is an important time for our Year 12 students. I wish them well in their last six months of schooling.

In the last week of Term 2 we also say a sad farewell to three of our wonderful International students and our Rotary exchange student.

Although it will be sad to say goodbye we know that they will remain a big part of the Burnside family and I am sure that the friendships they have made will continue for many years to come. Farewell to Hannah, Maya and

Rahel from Germany and our Rotary student Sokrates who returns to Norway. We wish them a safe trip home. Term 3 is usually a busy time for

new International students however unfortunately in the current situation we are unable to host any new students or study tours.

The school community has been fantastic in supporting the International Program here at Burnside. If there are any families who would be interested in hosting a student in the future please make contact with Kylie Postan, our

Homestay Co-ordinator.

We have also started our transition program for Year 6 students and advise

any parents that if you currently have a child in Year 6 to ensure you hand your enrolment in as soon as possible. This allows me to monitor our

numbers and oversee the approval of our out of catchment enrolments. Burnside State High School continues to be enrolment managed so if you

reside outside the catchment area, please complete and submit your Expression of Interest for Out of Catchment enrolment as soon as possible.

The subject selection process for 2021 is underway for our students in Year 7 to 10 and will be greatly aided by the Subject Expo that is being held on Wednesday 22 July. Please see information on this page in regards to the

Subject Expo including available tours, Q&A sessions etc.

All families are encouraged to follow the Burnside State High School page

on Facebook to keep up to date with all the latest school news.

It is certainly going to be a very busy term and projected enrolments for

2021 are looking at being around 890 students which is fantastic news. The school will also have approximately two extra teachers on staff next year.

This demonstrates the great confidence the community on the Sunshine Coast has in Burnside State High School. I wish you all a safe and restful

holiday and look forward to working with you all in Term 3 as we return to normality here at Burnside.

RELAY FOR LIFE FUNDRAISING – A BRILLIANT BEGINNING

Burnside SRC is continuing its commitment to our

community as we raise funds for Cancer research through

the wonderful efforts of Burnside’s 2020 Relay for Life

team, captained by Year 12 leader, Jayme Lenton. Our first

fundraiser was a great success on June 19, raising over $500

with a non-uniform day with our team’s motto, “Shine Bright for Cancer

Research”.

Students were asked to dress in fluoro colours and Year 7 SRC

representative, Henry Coulson baking delicious chocolate brownies as prizes for the best dressed, won by Year 10 student Demita Linsdell and Year 11

representative Angelina Hambleton.

THE JOURNEY TO 2021 STUDENT LEADERSHIP BEGINS. CALLING FOR

2021 LEDAERS

Year 11 students who are considering

applying for student leadership positions in 2021 are beginning their path to leadership next year by participating with School

Chaplain, Matt Brady in a three day wilderness trek, starting from Sunday Creek

EEC and finishing at Booloumba Creek area, 43 km of arduous, mountainous terrain

carrying a backpack with all of the required gear. This will take place in week 4 of Term 3

(3-5 August) and a full preparation day will be held on the Thursday before (30 July).

On Thursday 20 August there will be a workshop run by YLead open to all Year 11 students who are considering applying for

leadership in 2021. The workshop has been timetabled on a Thursday to minimise loss of

class time and this notification should allow students enough time to make arrangements

with their traineeship workplaces, if needed.

Although 2020 has been challenging so far,

the Student Representative Council is adamant that the remaining time will be full of enthusiasm and commitment.

AIR BORNE CHEMICALS - AEROSOL BAN: Some members of the Burnside State High School community suffer severe allergies to aerosol sprays or perfumes that can act as a trigger to an (often) serious asthma attack, or bring on a severe migraine. The allergy can be sufficiently serious to put one of our students into anaphylactic shock if an aerosol or perfume has been sprayed anywhere in the student's vicinity. This can be a life threatening situation, resulting in the student’s airways closing and the student having to be transported to hospital in an ambulance. • Aerosols are banned from school premises, excursions, sporting events and all events where students are in confined spaces. To provide the safest environment, students are banned from bringing aerosol sprays and perfume pump-packs to Burnside State High School. This includes for any excursions, camps or other onsite or offsite activities. Risk management strategies will be in place for any aerosol sprays used as part of the curriculum and school business. Aerosol sprays or perfume pump-packs brought to school by students will be confiscated and disposed of. Breaches of this policy will result in disciplinary action. UNIFORM GUIDE

Burnside State High School is a progressive and socially responsible school maximising

student learning outcomes and preparing young people to become active citizens in a global

society. Burnside State High School is a uniform school because the Parents and Citizens

Association, representing the parents of the school, has decided to support the wearing of a

school uniform.

The Minister for Education has stated that the advantages of wearing school uniforms include

“developing a sense of belonging to a group, pride in membership of that group and

identification of students to and from school”. Research has also shown that there is a clear

link between dress standards, school discipline, school spirit and community perceptions of

the school in general.

It is our policy that the correct school uniform is worn each day and we urge all parents to

support the accepted standard of dress as detailed in this brochure. The Burnside State High

School uniform can only be purchased from the school uniform shop.

GUIDANCE NEWS

Career Planning and Subject Selection for Year 10 Students

The coming term will see our Year 10 students continue their journey across the senior phase of learning as they complete their Student Education and Training (SET) Plans. The SET Plans will involve students actively working with their parents and school staff to further explore realistic career options and possible learning/training pathways.

Additional information around this important process will be provided to students and parents over the coming weeks. COVID restrictions will have limited some of the events available for students, however activities will likely include:

The opportunity to attend university and training organisation open days, along with virtual career and tertiary study expos;

Meeting with a number of employers and industry representatives as part of the school’s Beacon activities;

Participating in classroom and online activities exploring personal abilities, interests, career opportunities, and learning/training pathways;

Completing a week long block of work experience; and,

Meeting with the key school staff to help guide SET Plan Development, culminating in Year 11/12 subject selection.

Applications for 2021 University Entrance

Year 12 students intending to apply for university entrance in 2021 will meet with me in Term 3 as the next step in their Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) application process.

BIOLOGY NEWS

Health benefits of green capsicum

During their recent biology experiment, Year 11 students investigated the conditions which favour the breakdown of toxic substances produced by the body’s metabolism. They discovered that an enzyme contained in green capsicum breaks down harmful hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. The results of their data show that if the surface area of the capsicum is larger and it is not boiled it is more effective than when it is boiled because this will destroy the function of the enzyme.

This experiment and the report completes the second assessment for the Year 11 Senior Biology course. Science proved that eating raw, well chewed green capsicum has health benefits as it is an antioxidant and supports your liver functions.

QCCC SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITY

DURING COVID

QCCC [Queensland Camping and Conference Centre] in Mapleton is one of Queensland’s most desired Outdoor Education camps for school and church groups. With the loss of all scheduled camps during Semester 1, the staff at QCCC have made wonderful use of their time – caring for their community.

They have planned, cooked and delivered thousands of meals to local families during these challenging past few months. Some of these meals have been gratefully received by staff from BSHS . This blessing of a home cooked meal during an uncertain and hectic time, has been truly appreciated.

More recently, staff have been able to support more good work from QCCC by purchasing jars of lemon butter for $4 per jar. 100% of the money will go to the charity Hope Spreads. This charity supports local sufferers of Parkinson’s Disease.

Parents also have the opportunity to purchase this local product from two Mapleton businesses; IGA and La Botiga. You could also purchase some from staff member, Megan Cross, [email protected]

On behalf of our school community, we would like to thank QCCC for their kindness and support during this time and sincerely wish them well with their business for the remainder of 2020.

YEAR 10 CAREER EDUCATION

Unfortunately due to the current restrictions in place as a result of Covid-19, our Ute Day that was planned for Year 10 students on 5 June has been postponed. We will now endeavour to include this experience as part of our careers event scheduled for 11 September.

We appreciate the importance of our careers education in Year 10 and therefore will still be proceeding with the work experience week commencing 14 September. Due to remote learning we are extending the due date for completed forms to be returned to the end of Week 3 in Term 3 (31 July).

If students have misplaced their form they can collect an additional form from the work experience tray in Mrs Richardson’s office once they return to school. If students are having difficulties finding a placement, they can see our Apprenticeship and Traineeship Coordinator Peta Jones on a Monday or Friday to assist.

TO MARKET, TO MARKET…

Year 8 Indonesian students at BSHS have been excited to return to the classroom this term, where they can finally engage in some real-life scenarios.

During the Covid lock down students completed their language learning via TEAMS and Power Points. While this was very effective for maintaining their language skills, there is nothing quite like learning through role play and having fun with friends.

Bargaining at local markets is a crucial skill for anyone traveling to Indonesia (especially if they want to get the best price) and the Year 8s were able to put their new bargaining skills to the test on their return to the classroom.

Thanks to Noah, Brock and Joshua for modelling their Indonesian attire!

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

GOODBYE INERNATIONALS

With the end of Term 2 upon us, we sadly farewell International students Rahel, Hannah, Maya and Sokrates who all return to their home countries of Germany and Norway.

As you would all know, Term 2 did not quite go to plan and everyone had to adapt to a new way of schooling. Whilst the experience for our Internationals was very different to their initial expectations, they have many wonderful memories of this time. We wish everyone the very best for a bright and productive future.

HOST FAMILIES

We would like to showcase some of our generous and caring families and share some of their experiences with their International students.

Hansen Family

Opening up our home …

Despite neither of my kids attending Burnside High, we are a local family with many friends at the school which is how we found out about the International Exchange program at the school. People get involved in the program for lots of different reasons, but mine was simple – I want my kids to know that there is a big, wide world outside of the Sunny Coast that is waiting for them, and they can get a peep of that through the eyes of our International guests.

We launched ourselves into the program in 2019, deciding to start off with a short stay Sister School

exchange student named Karin. She was so delightful – happy, enthusiastic to learn and keen to be a part of our household. We are now on our third student and have been really happy with the program.

As a Tourism Tragic who moved here from down south, one of my biggest loves is exploring different places on the Sunny Coast. So far, our three students have done so many wonderful things that they would never have expected.

Horse riding on Rainbow Beach

Camping on Teewah Beach

Whale, Dolphin and Mantra Ray spotting from Double Island Point

Waterfall swimming at secret hinterland spots,

Walking along the beach

Family dinners every Sunday night – eating our way across the Sunny Coast

Day tripping to Inskip Point

We are hosting our third student now, and we all agree, it has been a really great program to be involved with. It can be challenging to introduce a new young person into your household, but as long as the rules and expectations are clear from the start, it can provide such a great opportunity for both the host family and the student they are hosting.

Denvir Family

Our family thoroughly enjoys being involved in the Burnside International Program. We have been hosting students for a number of years and have formed many lifelong friendships.

Our time with Rahel has gone by very quickly and it will be very sad to say goodbye next week.

Armet Family

During lockdown the girls were kept motivated with exercise which sometimes was a short work-out in the garden. They also did their personal exercise routines.

Silvia and Kaho shared their time practicing and planning the choreography routines. Both are very talented.

Kaho is an accomplished violinist and talented young lady!

Silvia used the time in lockdown to study hard which has really paid off. She is very proud to be achieving "A" and "B” grades, really excellent commitment.

The two girls, Angelina and I play cards after dinner. We have mastered Euchre and we are currently mastering Contract Bridge. They are excited to learn new skills and we have a lot of laughter and fun during the 30+ minutes we play.

Slack Family

We recently went out to our family farm. It’s a beef cattle property located in Gayndah. We invited Maya along too for the weekend, to show the girls something different.

We took the girls on a farm tour, fed cattle, mustered some cattle and sat around a fire at night.

Thank you to all our wonderful host families both past and present who make our International Program possible and successful.

The International Team
