NMT on Facebook
Friends, Happy New Year to all. I hope you all had a great
holiday season and are enjoying the cold weather in New Mexico. The weather here in the Bahamas is marvelous, and I am relishing the balmy days,
wonderful food and fabulous bonefishing with my family. (I've caught 20 bonefish so far - woo hoo.) Please plan to attend the exciting events we have
planned over the next few months. Bob Gerding's Outdoor Adventure show is always a great way to meet NM guides, see new equipment and explore fishing opportunities near and far. The Fly Fishing Film Tour
was a great success last year, and we are hoping for a repeat performance of entertaining short films. And finally, the NMT Annual Conclave is a fantastic daylong
experience where you can learn new fishing techniques, enjoy great food and company, and win exciting prizes. I also want to thank Lee Widgren for her many years of
service as the NMT Treasurer. Larry Trussell will be replacing Lee in this position, and we extend our welcome and thanks for his support.

Volunteer Opportunities
New Mexico Trout will again have a booth on the main floor
of the 2013 Gerding Outdoor Adventure Show at the Manual Lujan Center in the NM Expo on 8-10 February. Volunteers are needed to man the booth and interact with
the public to describe NMT and it activities. If you are interested, please contact Bob Widgren at [email protected].
NMT will begin it's 5th year in support of Project Healing Waters (PHW). This program provides
wounded warriors and veterans with hands-on sessions
of fly tying, casting, and fishing. We have evolved into what is essentially a year round program that begins this year on 13 February with fly tying during the colder
winter months, fly casting as things begin to warm up, and group and individual fly fishing outings that begin in
June and end in November. If you are
interested in supporting the PHW program give Dave Patton a call at 681-0835 or e-mail him at [email protected]. All volunteers must
belong to NMT due to insurance requirements. New Mexico Trout will hold its Annual Conclave on March 2nd, 2013 from 9AM to 5PM. If you
are interested in helping to organize, set up, or support this event, please contact Pat Mileshosky at [email protected].
Fly Fishing Film Tour
New Mexico Trout and Soaring Eagle Lodge are co-sponsoring another Fly Fishing Film Tour on 22 Feb at
the Hotel Albuquerque. This is an exciting event of entertaining short films of fly fishing adventure, where fishermen and women tackle a wide range of species and featuring waters from around the world.
You will enjoy time with fellow fishers and refreshments, while marvelling at the creative and artistic films. NMT will also offer a raffle drawing for a flyrod and line. Join us at this event when the doors open at
5:30pm for refreshments, and 7:00pm for the start of the show. More information is

Conservation News
Habitat Improvement Projects Proposed: The state Environment Department is seeking $1.5 million in capital outlay funds to improve water quality and stream habitat. The department is hoping to fund several proposed river projects. In Taos
County, two projects are planned, one on the Red River and one on the Rio Pueblo, which would restore wetlands, improve floodwater storage and improve bird habitat. Another project would restore multiple sites along the San Juan River to improve native fish habitat and restore wetlands for filtering out industrial waste.
Outstanding Waters Designation
Defended: The New Mexico Court of Appeals dismissed a complaint filed by the New Mexico Cattle Growers'
Association that sought to repeal a water protection measure. The "Outstanding National Resource
Waters (ONRW)" designation was approved by the Water Quality Control Commission in 2010, and guarantees protection for hundreds of
miles of rivers and streams, and in particular special trout waters and designated wild rivers. The designation prohibits any activities
that would degrade water quality. The Cattle Growers' had challenged the process by which the designation was
proposed by the state, but the court dismissed their complaint saying they failed to show how they would be adversely affected.

Meet the Board
Bob Day, Merchandise Chair
Bob is responsible for the NMT merchandise procurement and sales. In the past, he has
served as Treasurer and Membership chairman for many years. Prior to 1990, Bob owned a closed circuit video security business and he has been retired since
then, enjoying he favorite activities: fishing, furniture making, church mission trips, family and grandchildren. Nine years ago, a
friend asked him to help demo food products at a food show and since then he does a couple of shows a month. Old salesmen never quit - they die selling. Bob has fished most everywhere in the north half of New Mexico and although he has
favorites at different times of the year, he keeps returning to the Rio Las Vacas and the Rio Grande in the fall. NMT is his favorite volunteer activity as it is payback for all those great fishing days - and those that were not so great also.
