Around Lakeway

This fall and winter trappers in Texas cities will be scattering corn to lure bucks, does and fawns to come into traps. The net traps will drop, capturing the frantic, crying deer. Trappers will take power saws and cut the horns off the bucks. The trappers carry the deer to a waiting truck. Deer are placed in the truck and wait there for several hours. The trucks drive for about 90 minutes to a slaughter house. They arrive at the processor around 1:00 am and are shot around 3:00 am.

Shock sets in immediately after capture; capture myopathy follows, causing an extreme lack of oxygen and slow and painful damage to the muscles and organs. This is called TTP (Trap, Transport and Process). Thousands and thousands of deer are killed this way. This method is being used throughout Texas to control the deer population.

In 15 years, the City of Lakeway has spent over $360,000 on Trap, Transport and Process and other methods to kill deer. An average of $24,000 is spent every year and will continue to be spent. This has been their only option to date to control the population.

Citizen Advocates for Animals (CAFA) believes there is a better way - deer sterilization. The cost of sterilization is high the first years and then drops significantly and will likely drop below the annual cost the City of Lakeway is paying now as fewer and fewer deer will need to be sterilized.

The City of Lakeway has agreed to allow a deer census and deer sterilization as long as CAFA raises the funds to conduct them and the Texas Parks and Wildlife agrees to issue a permit for the surgeries. It is our goal to make this gift to the City.

The sterilization process begins by darting the does with a tranquilizer and transporting them to a surgical bay. Pain medicine and antibiotics are administered.

A wildlife biologist and his team will manage and oversee the sterilization (ovariectomies) of the does. There will be two or three veterinarians surgically sterilizing the does. After surgery, the does are given antibiotic and a pain killer. When the does are ready, team members will carry them back to their original home in the City and administer a reversal agent. They are then observed to ensure they are fully recovered.

Sterilization of does is being used across the United States with success. The current method used to control deer overpopulation in Lakeway and other cities in Texas is cruel to the animals and causes more killing annually. CAFA needs to raise $75,000 to pay for the deer census and sterilization, Phase 1 to begin in 2017.

Citizen Advocates for Animals (CAFA) are the only animal group in the Lake Travis area working for both domestic and wildlife animals. We currently have 1,749 members/supporters in the Lakeway, Bee Caves, Spicewood and Austin areas.

Our immediate goal is to provide an alternative deer population management method which is humane and more effective – sterilization

• to create a Friends of the Animal ShelterSterilization – This is our immediate goal. We are raising funds

for a sterilization program that utilizes ovariectomy – the removal of a doe's ovaries. This simple and humane process is less invasive than neutering cats and dogs, takes roughly 20 minutes, and the deer receive pain management during surgery and post-surgery.

Nature Sanctuary - One of our long-range goals is to create a serene place to come and observe the wildlife in an existing area or park. Visitors could come to photograph our wildlife. We want to have observation decks built for citizens and visitors to stop and observe the beauty of the area. We would donate kiosks describing the birds and the butterfly migration.

Friends of the Animal ShelterWe would support lost, injured and homeless dogs and cats in the

area. The Friends of the Animal Shelter goal is a long-range project. They would take an active role in coordinating efforts to create a shelter for domestic animals and for rehabilitating and releasing wildlife in the area by encouraging and organizing cities, the county, civic and social associations to provide funding for the construction and operation of the shelter. We would raise funds to help with special medical needs of pets whose owners could not afford such treatment. We would help provide foster care of dogs and cats that are hard to place. And we would provide special supplemental items not funded by the cities.

We are having a Wine and Cheese Tasting Saturday, October 22nd from 5 pm to 7 pm to raise funds for the census and the sterilization. It will be held at Vintage Villas, 4209 Eck Lane Lake Travis near Hudson Bend Road and 620. We will be having an exciting silent auction also.

We are asking everyone to come and enjoying many fine wines and cheeses while viewing beautiful Lake Travis sunset sights.

We will be having a wine connoisseur teaching us about the essentials of wine appreciation.

The Women's Advisory Council to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center—Lakeway celebrated its first anniversary on Sept. 13 with a light lunch at Cafe Blue.

WAC Chairman Rochelle Storin congratulated approximately 40 volunteers in attendance for providing creative ideas and solutions to help make WAC's first year a success. Storin also honored founding members and presented small gifts to those whom Storin called "the doers," volunteers who have provided both ideas and hands-on solutions.

Just a few of the projects over the WAC's first year included a women's seminar series, disaster readiness training, partnering on an open house, a heart walk, securing over 10,000 books for the book cart service for patients, Mamas and Mammos events during breast cancer awareness month, and help with 2017 fund raisers for projects that will benefit the local community.

"Over the next 12 months, we will focus on even more 'doing.' We are open to creative opportunities and new projects to help us achieve our goals for 2016-2017," Storin said.

Philippe Bochaton, president of Baylor Scott & White Health—Lakeway, thanked all the members for their invaluable contribution over the past year. Mike Moore, vice president of philanthropy, addressed the gathering and said he looked forward to the group's involvement in fundraising efforts.

After the luncheon Storin and Rohini Bochaton, who partnered to launch the group in August 2015, were recognized for their leadership. The hospital's marketing team members Christin Cross and Jewell Kibling provide ongoing logistical support to WAC. The volunteer organization meets monthly in the medical office building across from the hospital.

Around Lakeway

Last month you heard from John Hastings who is the supervisor of the water plant for Lakeway MUD. This week I am talking to Roger Fry, who is the supervisor over the wastewater and reuse departments.

Question: Thank you for taking time to visit with us, Roger. Tell us something about your background; how did you become the Wastewater Supervisor at Lakeway MUD?

Answer: I’ve been working in the utilities industry now for 25 years. I started at the City of Horseshoe Bay where I was the Water and Wastewater Manager for 7 years. I knew a couple of people at Lakeway MUD and I was President of the Texas Water Utility Association and heard there was an opening at Lakeway MUD. I started with Lakeway MUD as Wastewater Operator and did that for 4 years, after which I was promoted to Wastewater Supervisor where I have been for the last 12 years.

Question: What facilities and people do you supervise?Answer: I supervise the Wastewater plant on Palos Verdes

that we refer to as S-4 and our Wastewater Plant on Highlands Blvd that we call S-5. I am also responsible for the Reuse Impoundment Ponds. One is located on Clubhouse Drive close to the Yaupon Golf Course that we refer to as the I-4 pond. Another is located on our property at the intersection of RR 620 and Stewart Road we refer to as I-6. This property is also used for Cedar Tract irrigation which allows us to dispose of excess reuse water. Our third pond is located at the Highlands Plant (S-5) and we call it I-5. I also manage the Reuse Pump Station located on Duck Lake at the Yaupon Tank and a Reuse Pump Station at I-6, and one at I-5. We also have 20 Lift Stations that pump raw waste to the plant.

Question: How does the wastewater system work from the time the waste leaves our homes and businesses?

Answer: The wastewater goes from the customer’s location through collection lines in the streets and then reaches one of our lift stations. From the lift station, it is pumped to either S-4 or S-5 depending on the location. When it arrives at the plant, it goes through a biological process; this process infuses air into the wastewater which creates an oxygen rich environment for the bacteria. The bacteria in the wastewater that the air helps cultivate eventually have an end life and have to be taken out of the process. The bad solids then become what we call sludge waste.

The sludge waste then goes through the digester process which continues to break down any organic material left in the sludge. We belt press this sludge, which is a process for separating the water from the sludge. The dried sludge then goes to a compost

facility or to a land-fill. The remaining wastewater is then clarified through a settling zone that allows remaining solids to settle to the bottom, which we return back to the beginning of the process. The supernatant (the clear water remaining at the top) is then filtered, to remove any suspended matter, and chlorinated. Once it leaves the filter, it is chlorinated again through the chlorine contact chamber. This finished product is called final reuse water and is pumped to our impoundment ponds.

This water is then pumped to our reuse customers who are mainly Golf Courses, Boulevards, and Medians and used to irrigate those areas.

Question: What kind of volume do you handle on a daily basis?

Answer: At S-4, we receive about 385,000 gallons per day from our customers. S-5 receives about 205,000 gallons per day. These figures are averages; we have received a peak flow of 1,285,000 at S-4 and over 400,000 at S-5 during the big rains we had in August of this year. So, you can see that we are equipped to handle a 2-hour peak of much larger than the average flow.

Question: We have heard that some cities in the US actually reuse the wastewater as fresh water; can you tell us about that?

Answer: This is a common practice overseas, and a number of cities in the US including some in Texas have begun recycling their reuse water for potable water. I understand this is a very expensive proposition that we are not set up for. There is obviously public sentiment against this in many respects, but this may be something we will have to look at in the future should we have additional serious droughts.

Question: How do you deal with emergencies?Answer: We have eight emergency generators at our various

facilities in case of power outages. They are fully capable of keeping our larger facilities running. We have the use our equipment or independent pumpers to relieve any excess accumulation.

Each facility has alarm systems that alert us with any emergency or malfunction. We have staff on-call 24-7 to respond to these alarms.

Thank for this overview, Roger. We appreciate the education in how our Wastewater System works, and we appreciate the work you and your team does in keeping our city clean and safe from contamination.

Lake Travis Retired Physicians, a new monthly group for retired doctors who live in areas served by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center—Lakeway will gather for their first meeting on Monday, Oct. 10, 11 a.m., in the medical office building across from the hospital.

Spearheading the retired physicians' group, Dr. William Evans of Lakeway practiced 23 years with Austin Diagnostic Clinic,

serving tenures as chief of family practice and heading up ADC's urgent care initiative. Prior, Dr. Evans served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force.

Dr. Pavan Karnati specializes in the evaluation and treatment of coronary and peripheral vascular disease. Dr. Greg Morper’s internal medicine practice, which accepts Medicare, places a heavy emphasis on wellness and prevention.

"I'm grateful to these fine physicians for coming to speak; also to Christin Cross and Jewell Kibling of the hospital's marketing team who have provided wonderful support in launching this new program. I encourage all area retired docs to sign up for this or future meetings,” Evans said.

Join the Lakeway Wildflowers Chorus for a singing adventure across the United States at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek.

The Wildflowers’ show will feature music that captures the flavor of America.

Lakeway Wildflowers Chorus to travel the USA in Oct. 15 show

Musically, the women’s chorus will travel down the Mississippi River on a river boat, take the train from Pennsylvania to Tennessee, and drive across the country on Route 66.

They will visit such iconic cities as San Francisco, New York City and Atlantic City and sing the praises of the lovely southern states of Kentucky, Georgia and, of course, Texas. To top it off, the chorus sings in what has been called the only truly American musical genre: barbershop.

Directed by Adam Poynor, the chorus consists of 35 Lakeway women who love to perform four-part harmony. Included in the program will be two chorus quartets, the Petal Pushers and the Floral Notes, plus a guest men’s quartet, the Highlights.

Tickets are $15 at the Lakeway Activity Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Shari Anderson’s award-winning photography is now on display through Nov. 10 at Lakeway City Hall Art Gallery, 1102 Lohmans Crossing.

Anderson’s works will be available for viewing from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.

The Professional Photographer Association member places much emphasis on creativity.

“My style consists of creative, colorful, and energetic imagery,” Anderson said.

She got her start in photography by using an old Kodak 110 camera as a youth.

“From the first image that I captured of lighting to the ever-changing landscape that we have been given, I have been intrigued with photography,” she said. “I want to capture and save that moment in time. I have incorporated my artistic skill and love for adversity into my photography.”

Her award-winning works focusing on documentary photography, restoration, rodeos, commercial structures, portraits, nature and fine art have been featured in galleries and local shows.

She has displayed her photography at the Georgetown Public Library, Magnolia Café, Lakeway and Austin city halls, Hill Country Bible Church, Mexican-American Cultural Center, Catholic Diocese of Austin, Seton Spine & Rehabilitation and the National Arts Program.

Anderson also published “Heaven’s Gate,” a biographical look at her life and images.

Photographer’s Lens Pulls Viewers Into Landscapes

What better way to get into the holiday spirit than with a Christmas music show benefiting needy young members of our community? Lakeway Sing Along offers that opportunity on Sunday, December 4, when they present their 14th annual family Christmas Show supporting the Green Santa Project. Price of admission is an unwrapped gift for a child up to age 16. These gifts will be distributed to qualified area families at Christmastime by Green Santa Project volunteers.

The Sing Alongs comprise a group of 80 music lovers from the Lakeway area who have been performing together for local audiences since 1999. This year’s program, “The Light of Christmas,” created by directors Harry Kilman and Susan Oaks, combines old favorites, new music, and several fun Christmas songs guaranteed to entertain. Yes, there will be ample opportunity for audience participation – maybe even a chance Santa and Ms. Claus may drop in!

Back-to-back performances will be held at 2 and 4:30 PM at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, on Sunday, December 4th. Reservations are not necessary, but come early to get a good seat…and don’t forget your Green Santa gift! If you are unable to attend the show, you may drop off your gift in the donation box at the Activity Center anytime before the show. There will also be a donation jar at the door….and cookies at the show!

LTlov's Annual Grants Funding program provides financial support to other non-profit organizations aligned with our mission of neighbors helping neighbors to overcome limiting circumstances. The money used to grant funds is collected from a diverse list of individuals, corporations, and foundations who believe in the mission of LTlov and trust their organizational efficiency to be good stewards of their donations. This year, 12 organizations received financial support from LTlov totaling $37,994 dollars, including the Austin School for the Visual & Performing Arts. LTlov's grant made it possible for local students to fall in love with the arts by providing scholarships to attend a week-long World Drumming Camp. In addition, LTlov also reserved funding in the amount of $11,835 dollars for three internal programs: College Scholarships, Kids Free Dental Day and School Supplies' Project Supply Pack. The election cycle in the United States is nearing the finish line, with less than 45 days to go until Nov. 8th. Inevitably, during client account reviews, the discussion turns to the election and the potential implications it may have on portfolios and retirement plans.

I want to take a moment to share a “calming perspective” to a time and a topic that is often anything but calming: the presidential election.

Does the stock market care which party wins?Research from Goldman Sachs has shown the stock

market has been rather indifferent to which party ends up in the White House. As a matter of fact, the 12 months following presidential elections have averaged a median total return of 10% regardless of whether Republicans or Democrats took office. Recent events also seem to indicate that constant media attention drawing us into the “political storm” tends to ultimately result in minimal impact on investments long term.

Election cycles come and go every four years. Some elections, like this one, are more volatile and passionate than others. We would expect a highly volatile media period over the next 45 days and the potential for

volatility in stocks over the next 6 months. That being said, I want to offer the following

reminder: First, this too shall pass. And, as investors, the most important thing to remember is you are invested for the long term. It sounds almost cliché to say it, but the secret to surviving the volatility that comes with investing is having a well-constructed financial strategy and an advisor you can turn to for guidance through the storms.

Consider asking your advisor the following questions:

1. Is it time to review my portfolio and plan?2. Is my portfolio’s risk still aligned with my goals?3. How would a sustained downturn affect my

investment plan?4. Should we be making any changes based on the
