Dear Parents/Caregivers
MĀORI LANGUAGE WEEK
The theme of Māori Language Week this year is Manaakitanga – making people feel welcome,
showing regard for and caring for visitors. This will be our special focus value for the week.
Classes will be celebrating the week in different ways – exploring Māori legends, artwork, craft
and singing waiata.
Our Kapa Haka group will be performing at the
Mosgiel Library tomorrow at 2.15pm.
Last week representatives from Otago Boys’
Kapa Haka group came to school to give some
helpful
ideas to
our group
in
preparation for their first performance. The boys were
great with our students. Thanks to Clive Rennie, Rector of
Otago Boys’ for bringing the boys to East Taieri.

KIWIANA GROUP
Last Tuesday the Kiwiana Group went to the Otago Polytechnic Design Centre. We saw that you can cut steel with just water and sand. You can also cut and write with a laser. It was very fun!!! By: Isabelle Gallagher (6 years)
We went there to watch how they design and make
things and objects. We saw the laser. It scanned our
hands. When it scans your hand it shows up on the
computer. Then you can make a model of it. We saw a
fake brain that they had made a mould of. Isabel and her
Dad designed a tree, which was put on the computer.
We made it turn so we could see what it would look like
in 3D. Next we sent the design downstairs to a machine. This machine put the
metal in water and sand mixed with it and it cut it out. We had to wear safety
glasses because things could get in our eyes. The tree has all our names on it.
The leaves were cut out with a laser. We saw lots of different objects. We saw
how they make the sea shell out of a mould. We saw the 3D printer. We got to
touch things that had already been made by the printer. It makes them by
building up layers of the raw plastic. The raw plastic starts off as little tiny balls,
then it gets connected by the printer and it gets bigger and bigger. We got a
spanner to bring home.

SAFETY CONCERNS – ALLANTON BUS
Concerned parents have contacted me regarding the safety of children waiting for the Allanton
bus. Some children have been waiting on the side of the road in areas which are difficult for
drivers to see. Could parents please ensure that that their children wait in a safe area well off the
road.
ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP
Last Thursday the Enviro Action Group, along with the help of
Mums and Nanas, took part in the Annual NZ bird watching
survey. The children were able to identify birds such as the
Bellbird, Kereru, House Sparrow, Tui, Blackbird, Red-billed Gull
and of course the ducks that live in and around the Owhiro
stream. They learned that they had to be very quiet and still, with
lashings of patience, in order for the birds to come close enough
to identify.
It was a beautiful, clear Winter's day - great for getting out and
about our wonderful school environment, and we had lots of fun
learning how to look through binoculars. Thanks so much to all
our wonderful helpers.

ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP VISION MAP
The whole school, led by the Enviro Action Group, has been busy Vision Mapping ideas for the
improvement of our school’s environment and sustainability practices. To move forward, we
have had to look backward at the things we’ve done already, and at the environment and
practices that we currently have. It’s been a really worthwhile exercise to do with the children
and staff, BOT and Home & School, and we now have a much clearer direction for future
projects. If you have any ideas that you think would help the school become more sustainable
or to enhance our playgrounds, buildings or environment, then we’d love to include your ideas.
Please email me directly on [email protected] or pop your idea/s on a piece of paper and hand
in to Annette at the office by Friday.

The Fox and the Lizard
Chapter 1
Once upon a time a fox snuck into a spooky, slimy swamp. The fox
was tail-less. Just then a slimy lizard went into the swamp!
He saw the fox and said “Who dares enter this swamp”?
He chased the fox out of the swamp.
Then the fox had a plan.
He got an army of wild animals to chase the lizard out of the swamp.
So they did.
“Ouch, ouch” said the lizard.
They chased him for 3000 miles.
Everyone lived happily ever after. Except the lizard!
Chapter 2- The Lizard
The lizard was having a bad life. But just then he saw his old swamp. But he
didn’t know that something odd was about to happen. He got caught in a net
and he got shifted to a different country. He lived in a lizard garden and he
said “It’s boring”.
