Mrs. Kulkarni is available to assist parents and students from 7:45 am to 3:45 pm Monday through Friday. If

you have any questions or require assistance, please come in or call the office at (403) 500-2126.

Absences & Lates Please call the school at (403) 500-2126 whenever a student will be late or absent. The answering machine is always on and you are asked to leave a message at any time. Please report your child’s name, the homeroom class and the reason for late or absence.

Student Appointments If parents are picking up students for an appointment during the school day they MUST come into the school to sign the student out.

Electronics/ Cell Phones/ Valuables Certain items are not allowed at school as they interfere with the academic process and can be distracting to students. In addition, they can be stolen or misplaced. Items such as rollerblades, heelies, toys that interfere with the learning process (including collector cards and remote control cars etc…) as well as weapons, water guns, skateboards, large sums of money or valuable personal property must not be brought to school.

THEY WILL BE CONFISCATED AND PARENTS WILL BE CALLED TO PICK THEM UP.

Telephone Usage – Students The school telephone is for school business only. Our students will be permitted to use the office phone for emergencies and when they are not feeling well. Students will not be called from class to the telephone. Office staff will only take emergency telephone messages for students. These messages will be relayed to students at dismissal time for the lunch period and at the end of the day. Students are not permitted to use cell phones to make phone calls in class. We request that parents make arrangements (pick-ups, appointments, etc.) with their child before they arrive at school.

School Fees A school fee invoice/schedule was sent home in early September. You have the option to pay the fees online at www.cssd.ab.ca and click on the icon on the homepage. We encourage you to pay your fees online. You will receive the receipt right away if you do so. Should you prefer to pay by cheque, please make it payable to Our Lady of the Rosary School. In addition to reading and signing the student agenda daily, we have set up a variety of avenues for parents to keep abreast of happenings at Our Lady of the Rosary School. Facebook: Our Lady of the Rosary CCSD Twitter: @olorosary_ccsd Text Messaging Updates via Remind App: For General OLR Updates send this message: @mrsakulk to (587) 409-2973 For Bus 109 Updates send this message: @ aefcdb to (587) 409-2973 Our Website: https://www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/ourladyrosary/Pages/default.aspx Our Classroom Blogs can be accessed from the “Classroom News” tab on our website or click HERE.

Please be reminded that school attendance is critical to student academic excellence and personal growth. Student attendance at school is the responsibility of the parents/legal guardians. The District recognizes illness (if a student is too ill to attend school or is contagious), family death, medical appointment, court appearance or an accident as the only excused absences. Any other absence is considered an unexcused absence. Absences of more than 10 days (either excused or unexcused absences) cause grave concern and can severely impact the academic and social success of your child. Also, the school can only assess what the child produces. Therefore, absences that remove the student from classroom instruction and assessment will limit the teacher’s ability to provide assessment feedback to the student and parent. As well, the school is not responsible for preparing and homework assignments/ packages and the parent assumes the responsibility for ensuring their child will cover any missed material or assignments. In certain cases, if the number of absences warrant, we may need to work with families and students on the implementation of an attendance improvement plan to ensure we meet the guidelines as set out by the School Act. We thank you for your support in ensuring your students attend school regularly.

While it is not customary to have an elementary school yearbook, we have elected to create one for this very special and important first year. The yearbook is available for purchase for $20.00. It may be purchased online with the fee payments (as an optional fee).

Safety continues to be our number one priority at Our Lady of the Rosary School. Unfortunately, we continue to see unsafe decisions by both parents and students alike. We do not recommend J-walking into traffic between parked cars. We have seen this happening frequently on Cranford Drive. We encourage you to walk a little extra and use the crosswalks provided. Please choose safety over convenience. Our parking lot is not intended for drop off and pickup as this creates unsafe situations. Thank you for using the areas along Cranston Gate and Cranford Drive. Thank you for respecting and following the lead of our outstanding grade 5 patrol team. All students AND parents must follow the instructions of the patrol team for safety. If you are driving your child to school and dropping them off, please respect the safety zones. Do not park within 5 meters of the patrol cross walk. Also, the bus zone along Cranford Drive CANNOT be used for drop off or parking – this bus zone is monitored by the Calgary Police Service and the fine for stopping/parking in this area is steep. We have a legal stopping zone in front of the school (on Cranston Gate) that you can use to drop your child off and park for up to 10 minutes. Thank you for always putting the safety of the students first.

Happy Spring! Hard to believe we are in the home stretch and our first year at Our Lady of the Rosary is almost over. School Council is so proud of all our work this year and we are pleased to say we have had an incredibly successful and fun-filled inaugural year and while we are only a couple months from summer vacation there is still lots going on over the next few weeks to share with you. First off, our final numbers are in from the Dueling Piano’s Silent Auction event that was held in March and we are pleased to say that we made $8,807 that night. It was a huge success and we thank everyone that came out to support our Playground Fund. Speaking of the playground, we are making progress in the planning stages and we are fortunate to have been able to have two vendors come and present some designs to Council at our April meeting. We have now chosen a vendor and will be moving on to setting a budget and choosing a design. At this time, we would like to invite four or five more parents to join our committee as we move forward. Please email [email protected] if you would like to participate in the next exciting steps! Check out the Fundraising section of the newsletter for more information about our current fundraisers and upcoming events. We are still going strong with Westjet Raffle ticket sales, we have started sales for our Spring Planters and our last event of the year – the Family Dance is fast approaching in June! Thanks so much to Jill Allan and the fundraising committee for all their hard work this year. One last thing, a HUGE congratulations to the Mrs. Harrigan and the entire staff of OLR for putting on an amazing Blessing Ceremony this past week. It was a lovely day and on behalf of the parents and School Council, thank you for all your hard work on this event. Every day you work so hard for our children and we thank you! Please join us on May 16 at 7:00pm in the Learning Commons for the first Annual General Meeting of School Council. We will be reviewing our progress this year and discussing what’s up for next year. If you are thinking of getting involved this will be an amazing way to be introduced to what we do. I hope to see you all there.

Jennifer Odenyo, OLR School Council Chairperson

Wednesday, April 26th was a wonderful morning for the staff and students and guests of Our Lady of the Rosary as we welcomed the Most Reverend William T. McGrattan, Bishop of Calgary, Father Julian, Father Iqbal, Mr. Gary Strother, our Chief Superintenent, and representatives from our local and provincial governments to our Blessing and Celebration. It was a beautiful event and was made extra special by the generous donations of some of our community partners listed below who donated everything from our stunning floral décor, food, or the gift of time. We also would like to say a special thank you to all families who sent in food contributions to our sweet and salty table. Thanks again to Good Earth Café (Seton), Spolumbos Fine Foods, Calgary Co-op (Auburn Bay), Save-on (Seton), Superstore (Seton), Springbank Cheese Company (Willowpark), Funky Petals Florist, Ever-Green Greenhouses (Red Deer), who made this morning the wonderful event that it was.

Our district recognizes and supports the correlation between healthy nutrition and the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of students. Additionally, with the number of food sensitivities amongst our students we want to encourage a safe environment for all. We are therefore asking that NO cake, cupcakes or food items be forwarded to share with your child’s class particularly on their birthdays. This allows the focus in the classroom to be on the academic and encourage you to celebrate these milestones at home.

This past month, my grade 5/4 class has been working on enhancing and enriching our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) knowledge and skills in our science units. The Scientists in the School program is a fun way of bringing science to life through the engagement of students in hands-on, enrichment activities that directly enhance what they have learnt in class and the curricular outcomes. The Grade 4 students participated in their Wheels in Motion session at the end of March. They explored wheels, levers, pulleys and gears in how they work in simple machines.

The students loved all the activities and became scientists for half a day!! They were so engaged and enthusiastic about their project tasks. At the beginning of April, the Grade 5 students had their It Really Matters; Chemistry presentation. The students explored the properties of matter, and physical and chemical reactions.

The Learning Commons was an action packed place this month, when we weren’t busy making rosaries for our Blessing and Dedication the students were enjoying the space in a variety of ways. Each day a different grade of students are welcome to spend their lunch recess in the library either reading, spending some quiet time in the learning commons nooks and crannies or doing some participatory activities with their friends. This past month these activities included coloring mandalas and making towers with foam blocks. Each month the group activities will be slightly different as we grow and learn how to use our MakerSpace in the most vibrant fashion possible. We are still finishing up cataloguing and shelving our resources so if you would like to volunteer, we would love to have you. Please call the office and we will put on you on our schedule. Family at the Center of faith formation Many of us might struggle with finding ways to practice our faith at home with our families. The Families at the Center of Faith Formation provides an excellent resource for all families to discover ways to continually form our faith. This month focuses on participating in the community. Participating in the Community Looking for a community to belong to? We all are; no one really wants to be alone. But when it comes to belonging to and participating in a community, we’re confused. Do we have time to become involved in a community? What type of community? How can we find ways to participate meaningfully in our church, our civic community, and our world? Backyard Safety

As the warmer weather nears, so do long hours of afterschool and weekend outdoor play! The summer is a great time for your kids to enjoy playing outdoors with family and friends. It is during this time that new friendships are formed, new skills and activities are learned and life-long memories are made. This is also a time during which kids are faced with some dangerous risks related to the outdoors. This sounds scary, but many of these risks are predictable and injury is preventable. Many kids spend their time playing in the backyard. Here are some potential hazards and ways to prevent injury from them. BBQ’s – Children are attracted to fire, and summer brings an increase in burn injuries from outdoor grills. Always supervise your children around a BBQ that is on and never let them operate a BBQ.

Pools – Most pool drowning or near drowning incidents involve home pools and most victims are under the age of four. Always supervise your children when they are playing in or near the pool. Remember to empty the water or cover your pool after each use.

Trampolines – Falls from play equipment are the leading cause of injury in backyards. Many of these falls are from backyard trampolines. Almost all trampoline-related injuries to children involve backyard trampolines. Supervision by adults and trampoline nets are not enough to

prevent these serious trampoline injuries to children. The Canadian Paediatric Society, the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine and Parachute Canada recommend that children and youth do not use backyard trampolines.

Proper supervision and awareness of hazards will help reduce the risk of injury to children in their own or in someone else’s backyard, allowing you to enjoy safe and active time outdoors! For more information on backyard safety, visit:

Ways to Build Your Child’s Confidence As a parent or caregiver, you play the greatest role in nurturing your child’s self-image. Influences such as the child’s academic and athletic ability, teachers, or peers affect how your child may feel about him or herself. You can help your child feel more confident by doing and saying things that will strengthen their own feelings of self-worth. Providing encouragement and support helps to strengthen your child’s confidence. This is something almost all parents do instinctively from the time their children are babies by praising them for their first steps or applauding their first word. As your child grows older you may sometimes find more to criticize than to praise. It’s easy to forget that children need praise and encouragement at every stage of development. Children need to know that they are loved and appreciated, no matter what may happen in the world around them. For example, when there are troubles in the family children might think they have somehow caused the problems. You can help your child build a stronger sense of self-worth by assuring them that adult problems are not their fault, and by telling them often that you love them. Children who know they are loved and who have a strong sense of their value as individuals have a better chance of leading happy and fulfilling lives. Children who feel neglected, unloved or insecure know something is missing from their lives and may try to fill that emptiness by turning to alcohol or other drugs when they are older. By showing your love and encouragement every day, you’re building your child’s sense of identity and self-worth. Your child will be better equipped to cope with challenges they encounter and are more likely to make healthy choices in the future.
