Martin Luther King, Jr is famously quoted as saying: ‘The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.’ The focus on the development of character, and the foundation that delivers for life is something that is very uniquely ‘Cornerstone’. It is an essential part of our Mission Statement, and our College Vision speaks of the desire we have to produce graduates that have depth of character and who deeply impact the world around them. We aim to have students leave with their academic potential having been met, but equally, carrying an attitude and demeanour that reflects care for others, whilst showing integrity, humility and self-discipline. That is our hope. That is what, in partnership with parents and grounded in God’s truths, we work hard to deliver. There is the famous African proverb that says it ‘takes a village to raise a child’. There is so much truth in this, and we are privileged to be part of this village philosophy. The staff at the College lovingly accept your children as ‘our children’, and invest heavily in providing an environment in which they can flourish. We don’t just enrol children - we enrol families. It is this partnership that we believe has a deep and life-long impact on those who call Cornerstone home, and it is bearing fruit. I urge you to consider the upcoming parent meetings that are advertised within this newsletter as part of our endeavour to engage with you in your child’s education. It is during such opportunities that the partnership and teamwork is evidenced and bears fruit. It is the secret as to why graduates from the Cornerstone ‘village’ have gone on to make a difference in our world for good. Let us not forget what makes Cornerstone unique in the Southwest. In the midst of the messiness that life can bring, keep your eyes trained on the blessing of our community, and for the great things that happen every day. Lives are being impacted upon for good. With God’s help, and with parents supporting us in this aim, we can look towards the future of our children with great expectation. Around the CollegePlease Drive Carefully Last week, an accident happened in the car park when two cars collided as a result of speed and inattention. A second incident almost saw a parent and child collected by a vehicle for the same reasons. Please DO NOT SPEED in the carpark - it is a shared use area and we need to be vigilant of the risks we pose to others when we use access it. Thank you in anticipation.

Homework and TutoringWe are blessed with some remarkable teachers at Cornerstone, a number of whom go well above their required roles to support our students. One way this occurs is with homework classes and tutoring that is available in the Secondary school.Bob Cameron runs a homework class on Thursdays (used to be held on Monday), which he would encourage kids to attend who may need some additional help.Chris Poole also runs a homework/

tutoring class on Wednesdays at 3:30pm. This is for any student in any year who needs help with Maths. Students can bring their homework or a question they need help with. He is also happy to re-teach concepts if required. Priority given to Senior students, but all students who ask will be assisted.Further to this, Mr Venecourt has kindly offered to provide some tutoring in Maths to any ATAR level students. This will occur on Mondays in GL08. Other teachers at times organise after school classes when deemed necessary or helpful. We encourage you to consider how these opportunities may benefit your child. We also want to take this chance to thank the teachers involved for their commitment to our students.

Early to school? Please ensure that your children ARE NOT at school prior to 8:15am, as there is no supervision provided before then.

Primary ReportsIn Semester 2 reports, teachers make a professional judgement regarding the level of achievement that students demonstrate, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Students demonstrating excellent achievement will be awarded an ‘A’ grade, students demonstrating satisfactory achievement will be awarded a ‘C’ grade. Achieving a ‘C’ grade is commendable and where we expect the majority of students to be. We hope this helps in your understanding of the reports when they are sent out at the end of term.

Absences due to holidaysWe wish to remind parents that the government does not consider absences due to family holidays an acceptable reason to miss school, and this is a matter that will be communicated more broadly in the future. As such, if you do elect to take your children out, please

www.cornerstone.wa.edu.au

be aware that your child’s teacher is not obligated to provide work for them to do in their absence. Likewise, students in the secondary school may have penalties applied to their grades if they are absent for assessments and exams.

As mentioned on the front page, we have an opportunity for parents to engage in their child’s education with some parent nights that are planned.

Firstly, we are hosting a night for students who will be in Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 in 2016, where we have some exciting concepts to uncover. We are also seeking parental input on what we have planned. This will be held on June 15th. Secondly, we invite parents of our current Year 6 students to attend an evening on June 29th, during which we will communicate the way that the Middle School will operate in 2016, and the benefits your child will experience in that program. This night effectively explains how the transition to high school occurs. The concept of middle school (as we have had for over a decade) is only now being introduced into other schools across the state. We have this system well established and come with years of credentials. In fact, we are invited by other schools to show them how we do it. Come and hear for yourselves details of the Cornerstone model. Please keep an eye out for further information and specific details that will head home in coming days.

Don’t forget that the next Principal’s Forum is scheduled for June 23rd. This night will be less formal than the previous one, so come along to the College staff room at 7:00pm to hear details of College matters from the school leadership.

PARENT NIGHTS

Musical AfternoonLast Friday, the musical talent of our Primary students was on show. This is a regular event on the College calendar and gives students who learn musical instruments during school time an opportunity to showcase their talents, as well as providing a forum for the choir and dance troupe to bless our school community. Thanks must go to Mrs Heyes for her coordination of the event, Mrs Ali for her significant contributions and for all of the staff, volunteers and parents who assisted. We are greatly encouraged by seeing God-given talents on display!

History DayThe Secondary school students looked like a range of historical people on Monday - with the annual History Day bringing the famous and influential right to our doorstep.Mr Tully, Mr Cameron and Mrs Venecourt set the scene last Friday, with a medieval duel on the College ‘Green’, which was an entertaining introduction to the showcase event that was held in the Auditorium.Well done to everyone involved. You did a simply sensational job and we enjoyed your efforts enormously!

BookfairThanks must go to Mrs Meyerink, Mrs Rowney, and the team of volunteer assistants for pulling together another highly successful Scholastic Book Fair. The result, is that not only are the private libraries of our families richer for the experience, the College library has also benefited greatly! Thanks so much for the tremendous support we received from families. Results were:Total Sales $5,481.00, Commission $510.00, Value in Books Rewards $1,207.00, Donations $190. A fantastic result!

Sign DonationSeen the massive logo sign on the sports centre? Not only is it impressively noticeable and a great addition to the College, but it was also FREE! We are thankful to God for the parents who felt they wished to bless us in this way.

Dress-upsA big THANK YOU to the parents who have donated dress-ups for the Year 1 class. As you can see, it’s been a wonderful hit with the c h i l d r e n and we are very grateful. Due to the success, we would encourage even more donations! If you have items that fit the bill, then please drop them into the box that is outside of Mrs King’s classroom.

Around the College continued....Prayer PartnersIs praying for the College on your heart? Fantastic! That’s a foundational part of what makes Cornerstone so unique. We have now created a formal way to support Cornerstone in prayer, and encourage you to sign up as one of our prayer partners. Check out the advertisement to the left, and send an email today! It’s one way of ensuring that God stays at the heart of all we do and all we are.

Forgot Lunch? With the canteen requiring a strict deadline to ensure it can deliver meals on time, it is important to remind parents that if your child forgets to order their lunch, or forgets to bring their lunch to school, they will be given an Up and Go drink and an apple. Parents will then be charged $1.80 for these items and will receive a note requesting payment. This policy has been in place for sometime, and provides students with the guarantee of something to eat, as well as an incentive not to forget in the future. Please be aware of this process and encourage your children to be vigilant with ordering food items in a timely manner, or ensuring lunch makes it from the kitchen counter to the school bag. Thank you!

TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

Absentee ProcedurePlease remember that if your child will be absent from school, you need to advise the OFFICE (not your child’s teacher)before 9:00am. Alternatively you can email the office at [email protected]’s part of the process we are required to undertake to comply with legal expectations. Thanks for helping us.

Fruit - How Much is Enough?According to the Australian dietary guidelines we should eat at least two servings of fruit per day. But what is a serve? One serve of fruit is equivalent to:150 grams of fresh fruit or;1 medium piece of fruit e.g. apple or;2 small pieces of fruit e.g. 2 x apricots or;1 cup chopped fruit. Most kids love eating fruit as a snack, but if they don’t, try adding 1 cup of berries, grated apple or pear to a wholemeal muffin or pancake.
