    AUXILIARY NEWS: from Ann Ferguson

At the April Auxiliary meeting, our members decided to meet for lunch only at 11:30 am for the May thru Aug meetings. We will not

pack boxes for Packages from Home during these meetings. We will continue to meet on the 2nd Friday of each month (dates are May 8th, June 12th, July 10th and Aug 14th, 2015) at Dobsons Restaurant, 2155 S. Dobson, Mesa. During the April meeting an additional 17 boxes for Packages from Home were filled, making our total for the year thus far 60 boxes packed and shipped. We hope to pack 10 boxes a month or 120 boxes for the year, so you can see we are about half way to our goal. We have about $250 left in our fund which is not enough to sustain our current level of activity. We are hoping that all of you will find some items to contribute to this effort so that we may continue to support our deployed troops with Packages from Home. Please bring donations of hygiene and/or snack items to our meetings to help support this program. If you prefer to donate cash, you

may send checks labeled for Packages from Home to our treasurer, Austin Foote; a form for this purpose is available on page 11 of this newsletter. We are also still accepting used paperback books for Operation Paperback and used hard back books for the Phoenix VAMC. We Thank those of you who have already cleaned your book shelves; isnt is nice to have all that space for new books? If you havent donated your old used books yet, we will be glad to have them. Just bring them to our meetings or call me at 480-961-9634 to arrange a pick up at your home. If you have questions about the Auxiliary Meetings or donating to our Packages from Home and/or Operation Paperback projects, please call at the above number or email me at: [email protected].

    April Dinner Meeting

Our April Dinner guest speaker was Terri Alexon, a representative from the Arizona Corporation Commission, Investment Fraud Division. Terri shared examples of how people are defrauded and how to keep it from happening to us. She is a good speaker and her presentation was very entertaining and informative. Thank you Greg Moore for having her come and speak to us.

The April Raffle was hosted by Meredith Moore. Our 50/50 pot was won by Jeane Jackson. Thank you for hosting, Meredith

We need volunteers to host our monthly raffles. If you would like to host one of the months or donate an item for the raffle, please contact Greg Moore 480-814-0580 [email protected]. We need 5 or 6 items, each worth at least $20.00. If you are willing to host, we will try and help you get the items.

The members that come to our dinner meetings enjoy sharing a meal and conversation with people they have become friends with. No surprise there! After all, we are a fun and friendly bunch!

    A message from

    1st Vice President Greg Moore

Greetings all: I hope you found both the dinner and the ACC representative, Terri Alexon's presentation to your liking. As she pointed out there are bad people out there intent on stealing your money. These individuals can range from solicitations on the internet, the neighbor next door to trusted religious or

professional "friends." Again, bottom line, "If it sounds too good to be true..." May's dinner will have a magical theme. First, by having your reservation in by noon May 14th, a filet mignon, a chicken picata or a gran mariner salmon will appear before you soon after 1700 on May 17th. About an hour later, a magician will appear to entertain you. All of this for $25. What a deal! We will begin our summer luncheons in June, meeting for social at 12:00 noon with lunch served at 1:00pm. Menu choices will be Cheeseburger, Chicken Salad Croissant, Ruben Sandwich or Chef's Salad. Cost is $20 and reservations are due the Thursday before the lunch

    CHAIRMAN REPORTS

    Legislative Ed Fox

You are never too old to stop caring about

military retirement and benefitsfor yourself, spouse, and those who come after you. Support and champion those who support and champion you, if for no other reason than that of paying it forward. There is absolutely no reason for our Government to attempt to finance their irresponsible spending by gutting the pay and benefits of active and retired military members and their dependents. Never before has our Government faced such debt and their efforts regarding our entitlements constant and unrelenting. BEWARE.

    ROTC Karl Pfitzer

Thanks everyone, for helping us complete this years ROTC/JROTC Program. It was a great success!

    Personal Affairs Arlan Allen

As Memorial Day approaches I thought Id share this poem, written by Colonel Ben D. Qualls. He had written this for his cousin, who was killed in action in Korea.

THIS GARDEN OF STONE. This garden of stone grows not from water, and seed, and loam. It grows from tears, and blood, and heart, and bone. This garden of memories, and holder of souls, was built by these warriors, both young, and old. They have no race, religion, or creed. They just gave their all, with a simple deed. They fought, and burned, and bled, and died, while their brothers held them, buried them, and cried. Do not dare walk, by this garden of stone, with no remorse, nor sadness shown. Do not ignore, each father, brother, or son. Whose time is past, whose life is done. You cannot pay them back, for what you owe. This country, this freedom, this life we own. But pay those fighting, those living, those coming home. Pay them with honor, and respect, not said, but shown.

This organization collects donated thank you cards and takes them to the veterans hospital for our vets on holidays. Our chapter would like to collect at least 100 cards to give them for Independence Day, July 4th. We handed out about 70 cards to members at our last dinner meeting. They write a personal thank you inside and bring them back to our May dinner. If any of you would like to help with this undertaking use any thank you or blank card you might have. Do not seal the envelope (they check to make sure what has been written is appropriate) or sign the card. A few of our members are having their grandchildren write something. Children may sign and give their age or grade if they wish. You can bring the cards to any of our functions or Notes for Knights have the following drop off points:

A Knight is brave and heroic So is a soldier. A knight is a defender, a champion of a cause or principle So is a soldier. A knight is a warrior sworn to uphold the values of faith, loyalty, courage, and honor So is a soldier. Therefore, a soldier is a knight in camouflage armor.

This is Sr. Ventura and the monument he built to honor soldiers of Pattons army after the Sicily invasion in 1943. He was four years old when the Americans came and he and his family hid in the mountains until the fighting passed their farm. They came back to the farm and found over 100 dead American soldiers in the streets and the farm. He built this monument in their honor and has been visited by many families of the American dead. He speaks no English so we did a lot of hand pointing and gesturing. The Americans were from the 82nd Airborne Division.

Join us at our May Dinner as we take a few moments to remember our friends who have passed. A candle will be lit and a moment of silence observed.

On behalf of the Detroit John D. Dingell VAMC patients and staff, we would like to extend our appreciation to you for your donation of Paperback Books. Your thoughtfulness reflects the concern that you feel for our Veterans and for the service they have provided to all of us while in service to our country. Without your support we could not provide for the smaller niceties that make hospitalization more bearable. Your thoughtfulness also reflects the concern and compassion that our community feels for our Veterans.

Thank You for your continued support. Sincerely, Bill Browning CHF, Volunteer & Community Relations

On behalf of the Veterans, families and staff of the Dayton VA Medical Center, I wish to extend our sincere appreciation for your donation of books. Legislative Update 24 April 2015: House Unveils FY16 Defense Plans

HOUSE COMMITTEE REJECTS DOD BUDGET PROPOSALS On April 15, MOAA chapter and council leaders from across the country visited nearly every congressional office to speak out against the DoD's proposed changes to TRICARE, pay and benefits. MOAA members strengthened this initiative by sending their elected officials nearly 44,000 communications reaffirming this message.

The House Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee (HASC-P) listened. On Thursday morning, the Subcommittee released their mark-up of H.R. 1735, the FY 2016 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). None of DoD's proposals to cut pay and benefits were included.

The subcommittee rejected DoD's request to reduce the commissary subsidy that would have led to reduced hours and operating days. Before making changes to the commissary system, subcommittee members are waiting for a congressionally mandated study on the effects of price markups in commissaries, which is due in September.

The subcommittee also advanced measures requiring DoD to improve sexual assault response and prevention efforts for male service members. Additionally, the bill included continued funding for local schools with significant numbers of military dependents.

Although the subcommittee rejected the DoD's budget driven proposals, it did include controversial aspects of the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission's (MCRMC) proposals to overhaul military retirement.
