SECONDARY SCHOOL NURSE NEWS
Be active for life! Did you know that 9 in 10 Australian young people don’t move enough?
The Australian physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines suggest that young people should be active
more often.
Young people don’t have to do organised or competitive physical activity to benefit. Social physical activity with
family and friends, or being active by yourself, can also be lots of fun and is good for you too.
While all physical activity is helpful, doing a variety of moderate to vigorous intensity activities for 60 minutes
every day is good for young people…and greater amounts of activity each day, up to 3 hours will benefit young
people more.
Remember, young people don’t have to do all of their 60 minutes in one go. They can accumulate their activity
throughout the day.
For example, a 20 minute bike ride to school, 30 minutes in PE class and 10 minutes of exercise at home = 60
minutes. Or…. 30 minutes walking to and from the bus stop and 30 minutes of dance class, sport, netball or
kicking a footy with friends = 60 minutes.
Moderate intensity activities take some effort, but you are still able to talk while doing them (e.g. recreational
swimming, social tennis, fast walking, dancing or bike riding).
Vigorous intensity activities require more effort, and make you breathe harder and faster (“huff and puff”)
(e.g. jogging, aerobics, fast cycling, circuit training, or organised sports like basketball, soccer or netball).
Some examples of how to get active include:
I could meet my friends for a walk instead of a movie
I could ride my bike to meet up with friends on the weekend
I could join a local group or team
Choose activities you enjoy doing, and you will be more likely to continue doing them.

National Ride2School Day 2015
National Ride2School Day 2015 is taking place on Friday 13th
March. We encourage students and their families to leave the car at
home on this day and get a taste of the benefits, ease and fun involved
in choosing to walk and wheel to school.
We know that being physically active everyday can lead to a happier
and healthier school community. Active travel is a great way for
students of all ages to meet their recommend daily dose of 60 minutes
of physical activity every day.
We encourage all parents to give active travel a go, no matter what year your children are in, or how far away
you live. If the distance is too great to go all the way, part way is okay!
Even parking 500–750m away from the school gate and walking the last five minutes still gives your children the
opportunity to get a bit of fresh air and activity before they start their school day.
Don’t take our word for it, give it a try and see if it is for you!

Year 8 Geelong History Excursion Last Friday, 6th March, Year 8 students participated in the
History of Geelong and Government introductory day.
Year 8 students listened politely and actively to the talks on
Geelong History and Government in Australia.
Mr Richard Marles, (Corio, Member of the House of
Representatives - MHR) talked about government and why
he became involved and essentially it revolved around him
wanting to provide a better – more equal Australian
society. He was given several challenging questions and the
one involving ‘toeing the party line’ when you didn’t agree
with it was really intelligent. The Year 8 students
understand a bit more about politics and know they can go
see their local parliamentary members on problems they
have with pensions, benefits, environment ….. whatever
topic….. at the appropriate level - Local, State or Federal.
Year 8 was split into two groups. One group walked the
foreshore bollards and city wool quarter buildings before
lunch with Richard Marles. The other group went to the
East Cemetery for Geelong History given by Mr Frank De
Groot. Then they swapped.
Mr Frank De Groot with Darryl Thomas (CEO of Geelong
Cemeteries Trust), presented an animated and moving talk
throughout the East Cemetery. Frank talked about
anecdotes of its ‘inmates’ – their history and how they
affected Geelong society. Students learned about some
multicultural aspects of society. Frank is a significant
Geelong historian and story teller.
Along the Corio Bay/Geelong foreshore we followed
Geelong’s history through Geelong artist, Jan Mitchell’s bay
walk bollards and Ms McArthur’s City Wool quarter quiz.
Both groups spent some time at the Poppykettle
playground/skate rink opposite Deakin University’s
Waterfront campus.
Thank you to Mary Perry, Colleen O’Brien for the lunch Ms Swan and Mr Honeywell for their assistance plus Richard Marles
and Frank De Groot for their invaluable contributions and education of our students. I hope everyone enjoyed an educative
day.

Three big changes to the vaccine program
In 2015 three major changes to the vaccine program will impact on parents of secondary school students:
The City of Greater Geelong Council’s immunisation service may contact you about the secondary school vaccine
program. Schools have been authorised to provide parent contact details to local councils for this purpose. Contact the
school on 5248 1400 if you do not want your contact details given to the City of Greater Geelong Council.
In 2015 only, the vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough will be offered to all students in
Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. From 2016, this vaccine will be offered to Year 7 students only. This will provide earlier protection
from these diseases.
The time-limited human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program for Year 9 boys was completed in December 2014. HPV
vaccine will continue to be offered to all students (both male and female) in Year 7 from 2015.
To learn more about the changes, the diseases, the vaccines, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination go to
immunehero.health.vic.gov.au.
