ttComing up early next term is the Board of Trustees Election. Since 1989 schools have been

governed by Boards, the brain child of then Prime Minister David Lange.

Boards have a great deal of responsibility but also provide an excellent way in whichcommunity through in the main parents, can be involved in their local school.

Board members provide expertise to help govern the school, dealing with the big picture, the schools vision, whilst staff mange the school dealing with day to day operations andputting the big picture goals into practice within the classroom.

Boards have shared responsibility for: employment, property and finance. They receiveinformation on student achievement and help decide how resources; staff, budget,

facilities, can be best used to promote student achievement and engagement.

Above all the Board works in partnership with the schools staff and the school community toensure each student has the best opportunity to learn based around the schools vision.

Yes Boards are busy. Yes Boards have a great deal of responsiblity. Yes Boards have tomake tough decisions. BUT they gain the reward of contributing very positively to thesuccess of students and school.

We encourage parents to review the BOT Elections Timeline being sent home shortly. Weencourage parents to consider standing for election or otherwise nominating someone tostand.

We encourage parents to discuss the role with existing members Russell Dickey, 4859728,Victoria Crawford 4859042, Debbie Shaw 4859876, Keeley McLaughlin 4859929, Jason Lyders48599607.

Another busy event coming up early next term, 22nd - 24th May is the Southern AreaSchools Tournament being hosted by Maniototo Area School. Students from Yr 9 - Yr 13compete to gain places in teams for this event. Thirty students will be selected to representthe school. They will compete in a wide range of wintersports over the three days. This is agreat opportunity to both mix with peers from other area schools, and to try to gainselection for the National Tournament which is based this year in Whangarei.

Our students put real effort and

    creativity into decorating their

bikes for the parade at the

Country Fair. It was great fun

for the students to be part of this

    event.

In terms of cycling, students at

Friday Sport have the option of

cycling on the Clutha Gold RailTrail, which is shaping up to be a

    favourite pastime for many people.

Cricket the season has now come to an end. Over forty five students playedthis year which is tremendous. The hardball team coached by Andrew Gray and MarkCameron were very successful winning most of their games. Over time they haveimproved hugely. This was commented on recently by Warren Lees during a coachingsession he was running.

Our two junior teams Gold and Blue also enjoyed success, improving their fielding, bowling and batting throughout.

The Gold team coached by Don Murray had a number of very good wins. Bluecoached by Jamie Benington and John Auld competed eagerly, often coming up justshort.

Congratulations goes to the players and a big thanks is extended to coaches andsupporters.
