Dear Parents,

Welcome to Week 8 and what a busy week it is. We are well into our assessments,

writing persuasive articles about flying foxes in Year 5 and creating persuasive

advertising of a travel destination in Year 6. We have been practising our reading

strategies, comparing and questioning to help us deepen our knowledge and

understanding of the text we are reading relating to our tasks. Through our

assessments we are able to demonstrate our writing skills - point of view,

modality, paragraphing and persuasion.

In Science with Ibu Eva’s direction, we have been investigating evaporation,

explaining solids, liquids and gases and testing change – reversible or irreversible.

The Year 5’s have conducted experiments to investigate variables that affect the

amount of evaporation of a liquid. The Year 6’s have conducted experiments about

all the changes that occur to materials because of heating that can or cannot be

reversed through cooling.

Every day in maths we practise our number facts. To be able to achieve mastery of the basic facts, students:

apply a range of efficient thinking strategies to recall number facts; demonstrate automatic recall of basic facts; ‘think addition’ to recall subtraction facts and ‘think multiplication’ to recall

division facts; recognise and solve related and extended facts; identify and reason with number facts, related facts and extended facts in

computation and problem-solving situations; and Apply number fact knowledge to estimation, mental computation and problem

solving.

Baroody (2006) suggests the following approach to developing computational fluency: Patiently help children construct number sense by encouraging them to

invent, share and refine informal strategies. Promote meaningful memorization or mastery of basic combinations

(number facts) by encouraging children to focus on looking for patterns and relationships.

Year 5/6 News (cont’d) Practice is important, but use it wisely. Allow children to progress through the ‘counting’ and ‘thinking

strategy’ phases before intensive practice opportunities that focus on speedy recall.

This Friday is Crazy Hair Day which is a Student Council Fundraiser for the school. Make sure you remember to wear your hair in a crazy fashion and bring a gold coin donation. Enjoy the start of winter Year 5/6

General News Dear Parents, We are smack bang in the middle of the reporting period. Students are hard at work demonstrating learning progress this semester and teachers are diligently reviewing demonstrated student learning in preparation for report cards and interviews. Report cards will be sent home on Monday and it marks the beginning of this semester’s interview period. As previously mentioned, the interviews are critical for parents wanting to know detailed information about: Learning expectations for their child. Their child’s academic achievement against expected standards. How well their child is engaging with expected learning. How their child may be able to improve. Likewise, it is how we can work together in supporting your child’s learning and well-being development. So, if you haven’t made an appointment please contact the office as soon as convenient. Thank you in advance. Cheers, Trent
