Next term we welcome Lyndsay Thomas who will take over for Tony Collins while he is on leave in Term 4.
We would also like to welcome back Jo Dutton and Amanda Bruce as they return from leave.
Progress reports are being posted home during the break with this newsletter. Included with the Year 10

students, I encourage all to come to the Parent Teacher Student evening on Thursday 9 October 5-7pm. I
also encourage students to participate in the Study & Enrichment Centre, continuing every Mon-Thurs

“Invited into a space you don’t normally
get to see and responding creatively,
telling a story based on my interpretations
and new found connections to the space or
objects at the Old Alice Springs Gaol has
been a really interesting experience. I feel
these observations changed the way we
thought about art and an objects design”.

“All observations examined the aesthetics as well as revealing the relationship to other ideas and experiences imagined in each object or space.
In treating objects as artwork these young
artists are inviting audiences to see beyond
the objects’ intended function to gain a
sense of the background story, the notion
of the handmade, the resourcefulness, and
sustainability as contemporary reflections.”

WOW – World of Work Program During the last two weeks our twenty five Year 10 & 11 students attended an intensive workplace and careers training workshop run by FYA, the Foundation for Young Australians. The main focus of the training was to understand ‘success’ in all its facets. Over the week, students were to consider what success actually is, and more importantly to answer the question ‘what does it take to succeed, both in the workplace and more broadly, in life as a whole?’ Our young men and women were trained by the FYA to develop the skills and personal tools that they could use to attain success in the future. Some students focused on developing their skills in communication and confidence in public speaking, achieving tasks such as overcoming shyness to interview complete strangers on the streets of Alice Springs. Others strongly fostered their skills in decision making, and by the end of the week were backing themselves more strongly in every choice, from public speaking, to deciding and sticking to a definite direction in difficult assignments. Finally, due to the independence allowed within the program, a number of students displayed an immense capacity for leadership, taking initiative to motivate the rest of the group. One student in particular, Elisiah Nawaria excelled here, representing the group as a whole in each place that was visited, and giving a formal thank you to each organisation on behalf of the group and the school.
It was inspiring to see these students develop their skills and confidence so drastically in the space of a single week, and a pleasure to get to know each of them. We look forward to seeing how they succeed in the future. With young men and women as fine as these, I have no doubt that they will.

Year 12 student - Festival artist and ATOM awards finalist
Year 12 Student Shiloh Jarrett has been announced as a finalist in the 2014 Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) awards for Best Secondary Animation. http://atomawards.org/2014-student-category/best-senior-secondary-animation-2014/ Shiloh has also been selected again as the feature artist ABC the 2014 Alice Desert Festival that launched on Wednesday September 10. Below is a link to an interview that Shiloh and her teacher Lucy Stewart did for Radio Nationals Books and Arts Daily show. “I would have rather it had just been Shiloh's voice! It was a big challenge for Shiloh to find her voice to go alongside her amazing artwork, she likes to say 'I don't like talking about myself' but her words are spot on.” http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/booksandartsdaily/alice-desert-festival-feature-artist2c-shiloh-jarrett/5722414
Term 3 VET
Another successful round was completed over weeks 7 and 8 of this Term. Attendance was high and the College
received great feedback from many VET lectures who commented on the engagement and attention to task they
noted in the vast majority of our students. This is in line with previous Intensives and is something we will be keen to
see occur again in the last Intensive weeks next term (weeks 4 and 5). Students are reminded that attendance is
crucial to successful completion of a VET Certificate, and that credits from VET courses contribute to successful
completion of an NTCET.
This term the College ran Certificate 1 in Business: Becoming a Worker. Tonia Folino-Driver, a trainer from GTNT in
Darwin delivered the course. Tonia commented most positively on how focused and attentive the group was and
was very pleased that students were able to finalize all aspects of the course within the one week.
A couple of VET Courses for various reasons did not run through the entire week and I would like to thank teacher
Chris McCullagh for his work supervising these students, who were able to use the time to complete tasks from
English, Maths and other subjects during this time.

Junior Volunteer Program
Students can volunteer at Vinnies on a Saturday and during school holidays. Student volunteers are provided with a
stress free retail working environment, where they learn customer service skills, money handling, stock control and
visual merchandising. We can offer them written references.
Vinnies Youth
Vinnies Youth is a new initiative for Alice Springs. Students are encouraged to form their own committees (with an
individual school) with the support Vinnies staff to organise activities and projects that support people in need
within our local community, on behalf of Vinnies.
For example a mentoring group could:
spend time at the Juvenile Detention Centre providing positive peer support.
co-ordinate craft activities for the children, or a specific project such as building a garden bed at the
Women’s shelter (available to female volunteers only).
support camps for children in need. EG: children fighting cancer or children of parents with cancer.
AND MUCH MORE…
Vinnies funds all activities and provides continued support; there is no religious aspect to the group but the focus of
the community involvement must support the vision and ethos of the St Vincent de Paul! For further information
please contact Melissa Durston on 89521074.
Year 10 Dinner Dance On Thursday September 18, the Year 10 Dinner Dance was held at the Desert Lantern. It was a success with a
fantastic turn out.
Students arrived in all forms of transport and were dressed to impress. All students looked amazing. As the night
progressed dancing became the main entertainment with everyone getting involved. The food was fantastic and
everyone had a good time, definitely not a night to forget anytime soon. A big Thankyou to all the staff and students
that helped put the event together.

Student Car Park
College Polo Shirts / Uniform Policy – minimum required standard
Centralian Middle School
For further information to enrol year 7 – 9 students please
contact Centralian Middle School reception on 8950 2500
Recent changes to the Student Car Park register have been
implemented, to make the permit system easier for parents and
carers. For parents of students driving to school simply indicate
whether you permit your child to have any other student as a
passenger, or only specified other students. For parents of students
travelling as passengers indicate whether you permit your child to
travel in any other student’s car, or only in the car of a specified
student. Please contact the college if you have any queries on the car
park arrangements.
For some time the College has endeavoured to have students at school
wearing appropriate clothing. College Council has made a decision that
there will be a minimum standard. This minimum standard is the College
polo shirt. A student may wear any shirt as long as it has the same
coverage as the polo shirt. Any one wearing singlets will be asked to put
on a temporary shirt for the day or they will be required to go home and
change.
To assist this change the College will provide every student with one new
shirt. If you wish to purchase more you can do so at College reception.
These new polo shirts will soon be available for all students, with the
addition of a new unique design for Year 12 students. Early in Term 4
one standard polo shirt will be provided to all Year 10 & 11 students at
no cost. One “Senior” polo shirt will also be provided to all Year 12
students, again at no cost. For 2015, two additional shirts will be
available for purchase for $50 via the Back to School voucher program.

Alice Springs Youth Action Group Youth Survey
YAG have created a survey for the youth of Alice Springs to complete, we ask that you make this survey available to
any young people who you have contact with so that we can get as many responses as possible.
The survey will close on Friday 18 October 2014.
The hyperlink will take you directly to the survey webpage where this survey will be completed anonymously:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/58865MG
Our aim is to understand and attract the ideas created from young people aged between 5 to 24 years old.
The information provided will give our committee a greater knowledge of what the young people want.
We hope to use this information to inform discussion within the sector and provide an opportunity for young people
to tell us what they want.
Survey will take approximately 10 minutes. Please be advised that some young people will need assistance with this
survey.

Gateways Gossip
This term has been a productive one for all of our students in the Gateways Program.
For many this term is known as the premiership term and all students have handled
themselves well with all of the work requirements. Students from both Year 10 and 11
were lucky enough to be a part of a successful program known as the WOW (WOW
stands for World of Work) program. All students who participated got a lot from the
program and have grown from it. Thank you to all involved, students and staff.
We also had the opportunity to go and
do some valuable research on
different job opportunities with the
Career Expo in town this term. Many
of our students found out what they
need to do to successfully move from
School life into the workforce. Below is
a photo taken of one of our students
Travis Long who got to meet Cuz
Congress.
Debra Welch – Gateways Special Support Officer
We hope that everyone has a
great break and comes back
nice and relaxed ready for
the homerun quarter and
ready to work.
Thank you for a great term
one and all.
