FROM THE PRINCIPAL

For the latter half of this term it has been an honour and privilege to be the Principal of Darling Range Sports College. Having returned to the College this term after long service leave, it has been fantastic to see our students enjoying our new facilities. In the classroom, students are engaged and taking advantage of the new opportunities that exist with our new and innovative areas.

Some of the highlights for me this term have been:

• Our NAIDOC assembly and associated activities• RUOK? Day festivities• The Chevron Wheatstone tour, near Onslow• DRLC Showcase• Book Week with so many students and staff getting dressed up• as well as the numerous extra–curricular opportunities our staff provide for our students on a daily basis

Recently we celebrated our Year 12’s journey at Darling Range Sports College with a series of farewell events. It has been wonderful to see them grow into young adults and are fine role models for our youth.

I am looking forward to the remainder of the year and we welcome back Mr Lawson as Principal in Term 4, after a well-deserved break.

YEAR 8 TEXTILES

Our Year 8 textiles students have been busy making scrunchies, makeup wipes and face masks and been doing an amazing job!

If any of our families or community members have unwanted fabric lying around, the Home Ec Department would greatly appreciate any donations.

GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION

A keen bunch of budding geographers recently ventured out into the historic Swan Valley.

Students investigated the possible perils of uncontrolled urban sprawl in a new housing development, but also the wonders and traditions of the wine and coffee industries that European migrants decided to bring with them throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Students tasted a range of coffees at Yahava and explored ethical business models and supply chains through Fair Trade. They also went behind the scenes of the beautiful family owned winery called Upper Reach Winery.

They investigated the origins and spread of wine into Australia as well as the art, the science, the technology, and the innovation behind a beautiful vintage (purely observation only of course). A behind the scenes tour of the production of both red and white varietals and of course the economic and environmental challenges ahead for the wine industry on a local and global scale.

A fantastic day out with a few products purchased along the way to support local businesses in what has been a challenging two years.

A big shout out to Wiki at Yahava for our coffee tastings and the unconquerable wine officiando Laura at Upper Reach Winery. Thank you so very much for your time and knowledge.

Remember, all school subjects are good, but Geography is where it’s at!

STEM TRIP TO CHEVRON’S WHEATSTONE GAS PLAN

On 20 August our Chevron students were invited to partake in an excursion to the Wheatstone Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) facility North of Onslow as part of a competition the school won.

The visit was publicised in both The West Australian newspaper and Chevron’s website. The competition was won by Mr Schembri who wrote an application singing the praises of the work ethic, resilience and STEM skills displayed by his students over the year.

The Chevron course (officially called Powering Careers in Energy) is a Year 10 elective which gives our students the opportunity to learn about the formation of oil and gas, environmental management, health and safety and careers through hands on projects and utilising a range STEM skills. The course also involves incursions, excursions and allows ours students to make industry links. Powering Careers in Energy is run by specialist teachers and is endorsed, which gives our students WACE points towards Year 11 upon completion. This course will be available next year to our Year 10’s.
