Our Riverina PP5 Relay Team
Stage 2/3 working hard on their
Michael McCormack ANZAC
writing competition entries
Congratulations the students who swam very competitively at Albury at
the Riverina Swimming Carnival: George 16th and Ted 22nd overall and
the MPS P5 relay team coming 6th in the Riverina. Congratulations also to
Connor and Digby for their individual successes in the recent John
O’Brien writing competition. Well done to you all. We also have a number
of individual students taking advantage of additional opportunities such
as the AFL and Netball trials at Coolamon on Wednesday, 3 students nominating for the
Riverina Choir and 4 students attending “A Day With a Scientist” in Wagga next Monday.
Our students (and parents) are really very busy at the moment!
Next Wednesday 18th March will also be an very busy day for our whole school community
beginning with our Ride-2- School and muffins, followed by a fabulous morning program at
school with the Riverina Environmental Education Centre staff, and culminating with a
healthy lunch (chicken salad wrap for $2.50). Everyone is welcome to join us for all or parts
of the entire morning program. We are also very pleased to say Kitty Bont from CAHMS will
be dropping by especially for morning. We certainly look forward to seeing Kitty again.
Next week students are looking forward to sharing their learning goals with you. Please
remember to return your preferred times this week for the Student Personalised Learning
Plan meetings being held in Week 8.
Premier’s Reading Challenge is now open for registration. Students register themselves and
update their own Student Reading Record online using their DET username and password.
Students will need their teacher to validate their reading log before the PRC certificate is
issued. Their reading log must be completed by the 21st August.
The school counsellor visits twice per term to assist staff in supporting students in their
learning. Our Counsellor, Eileen Knox visits Matong PS in Week 5 and Week 8 each term.
Please contact the office if you would like your child to access this service.
As always, a very sincere thank to parents and students who assist us to move forward with
conversations around improving our structures and systems to better support our students’
learning.
Have a great week

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
STAGE ONE NEWS Mrs Meier is coming to write stories with us every Thursday this term. We have
learnt that we have a left and right side of the brain. We need to think of a
character that we would like to write about for this Thursday’s lesson. Last
Friday Digby brought in a goanna’s carcass for news. It was interesting but
smelt terrible
By Stage 1
A huge thank you to Jen Hatty for laminating (what must have seemed like
thousands) sight words for Stage 1. It is much appreciated.
Mrs Crocker
STUDENT NEWS Stage 1 has been learning about Simpson and his donkey. They have also been
learning about War and what effects it had on everyone involved. In maths
Stage 1 has been learning about vertical and horizontal lines and is doing very
well.
Stage 2/3 have been doing lots of grammar, spelling and writing activities during
our literacy stations on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We have also been
learning about Australians at War and 2D shapes during maths on Thursday and
Friday.

STAGE 2/3 NEWS
The end of term is quickly approaching and Stage 2/3 students are busy working to finish
off our units that we have been working on this term, such as ‘Australians at War’ for
History and ‘Matter’ for Science.
This week we had four students go off to Albury for the Riverina swimming carnival Ella
Collins, George Hatty, Connor Smith and Ted Hatty. All students did a fantastic job to get
to such a high level and should be very proud of their achievements.
Next Wednesday 18th March Stage 2/3 is going to have a visitor whose role was to send
and receive Morse code during WW2. Students are very lucky to be given the chance to
listen to some stories about what war was like from a woman’s perspective. Stage 1 will
also have the opportunity to join and listen as they have also been learning about war.
Science experiments on solids, liquids and gases have been going very well each week;
students are now producing powerpoints to show what they have learnt.
Have a great week.

Community Day Wednesday 18th March
Wednesday will be an action packed day at school with plenty of opportunities for
parents to join in and participate along- side your children in their learning.
Here’s how!
National Ride2School Day Wednesday 18th March
Following the success of last year’s event, we have
again registered for the annual National Ride 2School
Day which is to be held on Wednesday, 18th March. All
students, (and parents and staff!!!) are encouraged to
ride part or all of the way to school on this day. Those
who are unable to ride might consider walking part of the way to school on this day.
Last year, several parents accompanied their children for this activity which was great
to see. All students on wheels are required to wear helmets.
Perhaps you could contact your neighbours and travel together. If you have starting
locations please let the school know and we can advertise in next weeks newsletter.
This will be a great warm-up and practice for the Mr Lucas ride in a few weeks time.
This year we are encouraging all participants to join us for muffins and juice that will
be provided free of charge upon arrival at school. So as to give us an idea of numbers
for catering purposes, please complete the attached note and return it to school by
this Friday. Final details will appear in next week’s newsletter.
Riverina Environmental Education Centre Wednesday 18th March at 11.15am
The REEC will be visiting Matong PS to provide their Environmental Program for our
students free of charge. The students will be participating in engaging and fun
environmental, hands-on, learning activities suitable to their age and ability. We are
very grateful for the staff from the REEC who are covering the cost of transport and
all students’ learning materials in support of students in our more locations. We will be
thanking the REEC staff with morning tea as well as lunch and I would hope as many
parents as possible can come along to join in with the students during the lessons from
9.15-11.15 and stay for our healthy lunch to personally express our appreciation to
them.
Our face book page is another way that parents and
interested community members can keep up to date with the
exciting events happening at our school. Liking our page only
allows us to see your public profile., so private information shared with your ‘friends’ is
not visible to Matong Public School administrators or others who like our page.
KidsMatter
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines mental
health as a state of well-being. At a recent KidsMatter
webinar, staff and parents learnt more about the
importance of good mental health in the success of
learners.
WHO “Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual
realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work
productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”
The positive dimension of mental health is stressed in WHO's definition of health as
contained in its constitution: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social
well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
This fact file highlights the important aspects of mental health and disorders. The
images include pictures drawn by children who participated in the WHO Global School
Contest of Mental Health in 2001

THANK YOU
A huge thank you to Steve Hunt from Narrandera Signs. Steve has been very
busy over the last couple of weeks updating our Honour Boards and creating
memorial plaques in honour of Mr Lucas. One has been placed near the tree
that was planted in his memory and another on the recycled bike made by our
Envirochamps in 2013. Steve has also very generously donated a new Matong
School establishment sign which looks fabulous. If possible please support
this local business for all your signwriting needs.
