    PRIZE GIVING

Amy Williams MBE, Olympic Gold Medallist and James Grindal,

International Rugby Player, were our guest speakers at our Annual Prize

Giving ceremony held last Thursday evening. Both gave an inspirational

speech expressing how preparation, dedication and commitment were the

key factors in achieving their dreams.

Ms Hughes told us that Inspectors, on a recent visit to St. Bedes, pointed out that

the climate for learning at St. Bedes was outstanding and that the quality of

teaching was of the highest possible standard. She reminded us that what goes

on in the classroom makes a lasting impression on the young people and that is

why it has to be of the highest possible standard. This, coupled with extensive

and co-curricular opportunities, makes for a well rounded and vibrant educational

    experience.

Prizes were presented to almost 250 pupils who were given awards for high

achievement, excellent attitude and public spirit within the community.

Although the names of many of the prize winners were known before the

evening, there were surprise awards announced at the ceremony itself:

Congratulations to Luca Hargitai (Science Award), George Curnock

(Sports Award), Joseph Gompels (Year 11 Award), Sashni Chelvam

(Year 13 Award) William Kane and Georgina Easton (Vice Principals Awards)

and Iwan Hughes and Fatima Montero (Principals Awards)

A huge number of children received nominations from staff and a

scrupulous effort to be fair, resulted in the final list. We hope that pupils

deserving of an award, but who did not receive one this year, will be recognised

at Prize Giving celebrations in future years.

Ms Hughes yesterday, awarded a small gift to pupils who

achieved two or more nominations but did not receive a

prize this year. She told them how pleased she

was with their excellent attitude to their studies

and has sent a letter home to their parents to

share with them this good news.

  • OLIVER - Prop Workshops'

Food glorious Food!' The making of props for the forthcoming college musical - Oliver began last week in the Art Department. Pupils were making bowls and tankards and look forward over the following weeks to designing pub signs and shops fronts, as well as the mighty task of painting a street scene of London! All are welcome to join in the fun! Ask a member of the Art team or your Tutor for more details. JOCELYN BELL BURNELL VISIT

Bell Burnell pupils were very excited last week to have

Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell visit College.

The astrophysicist gave an assembly to 'her' House, and then met

with pupils to answer their questions.

Dame Bell Burnell delivered two lectures. In the first lecture she

talked to Year 11, 12 and 13 physics students about her work on

pulsars. The second lecture was aimed at Year 9 and 10 girls and

was designed to encourage them to consider careers in Science,

Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects. It was fantastic to

have such an influential speaker in College, one who inspired the

pupils and enriched their learning experience.

    A2 PHILOSOPHY REVISION DAY

We were delighted to welcome Dr Michael Lacewing from Heythrop College, University of

London on Tuesday and our students agreed that it was a very worthwhile experience:

During this year we have been studying Platos The Republic, looking at three units in

particular; Appearance and Reality, Knowledge and Virtue and Political Rule all of which

Dr Lacewing covered in this revision session.

He focussed on exam technique and essay

structure and now we feel more equipped for

our examination in June. Last year, we visited

him in London with other schools but it was

nice to have the personal touch today.

  • AUTHOR VISITCHRIS BRADFORD On Thursday 30th April, Chris Bradford

the author of the book series

    Bodyguard visited St. Bedes.

    Bradfords visit was greatly anticipated

throughout the school and when the day

    came, pupils were buzzing with

    excitement!

The beginning of the visit was

accompanied by a Safety Check amongst pupils. Bradford then

picked volunteers to help him demonstrate the Box Formation from

his bodyguard training. It wasnt as easy as it looked!

After that, Artur volunteered to become an Attacker and Bruno

became the VIP, Justin Bieber! Next, volunteers were asked to eat

    cockroaches and worms (Yuck!)

At the end of the visit, pupils were given the opportunity to get

books signed and meet Chris Bradford.

(No pupils were harmed during this visit!)
