NEWSLETTER George Green’s School 1 Issue 12 - November 22nd 2013 Principal’s Welcome The terrible events following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines have touched us all. The horrific images we have seen on the television have moved many people to donate millions to the various appeals; there has been no evidence at all of the ‘giving fatigue’. Here at George Green’s, we wanted to do our bit to help alleviate the suffering. We decided to hold a non-uniform day on Wednesday this week. This was in response to both students and staff asking me what we could do to help. At the moment, every Wednesday, Ms Maxwell, in the Geography department is providing us all with work to do in tutor time to do with Internationalism as we have international school status. This is designed to make our students aware of issues around the whole world rather than just those on their doorstep. She prepared a fascinating PowerPoint presentation about the Philippines and the dreadful impact of the typhoon. Thank you Ms Maxwell Non-uniform days are relatively straightforward to organise but are only successful if some people work incredibly hard. I would like to say a huge thank you to John Martinez, Martin Frost, Liz Ferry and Jay Felice for collecting the money. John was outside in the cold with his bucket from 6.30 in the morning! He was determined to be there when the staff arrived. We ensured that all the students had the chance to donate by making them all come through the front entrance. No one was going to escape! All the effort was really worthwhile. We raised £1332. A FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT! So well done to everyone for proving once again that George Green’s staff and students seek to be good citizens, not just of their local community, but of the world. Jill Baker

Principal’s WelcomeThe terrible events following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines have touched us all.

Thank you Ms Maxwell

Non-uniform days are relatively straightforward to organise but are only successful if some people work incredibly hard.

MAT CornerUniversity College London is one of the top universities in the UK and we, at George Green’s, have felt incredibly proud of our students, both in Year 8 and in Year 10, who have been attending regular sessions at the university. Our three Year 8 students have been attending the UCL Sutton Scholars Programme since the start of the academic year and have enjoyed their experience immensely. As of November, two of our Year 10 students, Monika Lepste and Shayek Rahman, have been attending UCL Saturday School. It is a huge achievement for these students to be on the programme, as they were chosen from over 350 students from across London. When asked about his experience so far, Shayek said:‘The UCL Horizons programme is a Saturday school aimed to broaden my understanding of dif-ferent career options out there. It offers us many different courses such as medicine, law, maths and more which will without a doubt give me an insight into university and the career I wish to pursue.’If you have any questions about any issues to do with More Able and Talented provision at George Green’s please contact Miriam Wright on [email protected]

Parent/Carer Surgery Drop In

Tuesday and Thursday mornings9am - 10am

At George Green’s School we know the importance of communication. We are also aware that nobody knows children as well as their parents and carers. In a bid to keep the pathway of communication between ourselves, parents and carers open we have launched a parent drop in surgery. Charlotte your Parent Support Partner will be available between 9am-10am for you to drop in and discuss any matters concerning your child’s education and well being. It may be that you just wish to drop in and introduce yourself and find out what is happening in school. There is no need for an appointment, just pop in and get to know your child’s school a little better. The drop in surgery is an informal opportunity to communicate with school. If you have any serious concerns or issues relating to your child please contact the school in the usual manner. If you have any questions relating to the drop in centre please contact:-Charlotte Constantinou (Parent Support Partner)- Tel: 02079876032 ext519

Year 7 Form of the weekThis week’s form of the week is 7 Orang-utan. They have kept their attendance high and also moved up to 3rd place on the merits table. A massive improvement.Well done 7O!

The Merits cupThe merits are still a close call but there appears to be 2 front runners consistently getting merits. 7H and 7R seem to be keeping up their momentum. But it is only week 3 and we have 4 more to go. The half term cup could be anyone’s!

Attendance CupA fantastic effort by 7S last week. Having managed to get 100% for a full week they received a non-uniform pass on Monday. It’s also great to see that they are still top of the attendance table. On a bad note year 7 attendance dropped as a whole from the previous week. We were so close to the magic 97%. Remember any form that get 100% attendance Monday to Friday gets a non-uniform pass on the Monday. Keep up the good work year 7 and lets hit the 97% attendance.

GEORGE GREEN’S SCHOOL PARENT FORUM

Our Parent Forum is a chance for you to come and tell us how things are

going here at school with your children. We have been running for over five years now, and as a small group working together with the school have been

able change different things over the years. We meet roughly every 6 weeks on a Saturday morning where we share our

ideas and concerns over a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits. Last September, some of our Parent Forum members who had been with us since the beginning, have sadly left our little group as their children have

moved on. This means we need new Parent/Carers to carry on this valuable and worthwhile group. We especially need our New Year 7 Parents/Carers to come along and join us for the next few years that their children are in school. Our group is very welcoming and you will be made to feel part of the group

straight away.

Our next meeting will be on :-

Saturday 23rd November 10am-12pm

To go on our mailing list please contact Pat Jones at: [email protected]

As part of Citizenship, Year 7s are working on creating changes to help people in the Isle of Dogs. My recent class 7.3 decided, after conducting research, that they wanted to help elderly people by opening up Café Vert and running clubs and lunch for them. They worked hard to prepare a presentation for Ms Baker to get her permission and have planned a number of fundraising activities to help raise the money for the clubs. Last Friday they held their first fundraiser. Tasmina Sultana (7E), Amira Ali (7R), Tahira Begum (7T), Mackenzie Farrell (7O), Leanne McKenna (7P), Rejwan Miah (7S), Adnaan Muhith (7D), Nadia Rahman (7H) and Jessica Smith (7T) spent Thursday after school baking cakes and then the class sold them on Friday lunchtime. They sold out within an hour and the class managed to raise £105 for their project. The rest of the pupils involved were Mohammed Ahmed (7R), Suneha Aktar (7T), Rukshana Begum (7D), Harry Bell (7P), Shrestho Bhowmik (7D), Kamrul Eshak-Rahat (7T), Ahmed Hemed (7D), Nafizah Islam (7H), Abdurahman Ismail (7R), Chelsea-Leigh Landerkin (7H), Sydnie Lee (7P), Ibrahim Musa (7S), Sakif Newaz (7T), Muhsin Rahman (7R), Beni Wamba (7E), Mahira Yasmin (7H) and Sumaiya Yasmin (7P) They have done an amazing job so far and I am sure they will continue to make their project a success. Well done
