Newsletter #12 2020 10 April 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, Since last week’s newsletter/video, there have been some questions. So, let me address them this week. We are going to add a written newsletter as some parents were unable to watch the video due to insufficient data. As I said last week, the SGB have continued meeting via Zoom, as have the school Executive. So, we are all busy talking about the impact of the lockdown, and applying our minds to the different scenarios possible in our future. Mrs Bronwyn Harvey, Grade 9 Head, wrote a very informative article regarding learning at home for the Daily Dispatch, which gives very useful advice. We have attached the article (please see the end of this Newsletter) for you to read. Back to work on the 14th: Yes, we are going to start online teaching on the 14th (next Tuesday). We are hoping that we will be back at school on about the 20th, but looking at other countries further into the pandemic than South Africa, we may be out for longer. I am sure the President will address the nation after their cabinet meeting on the 15th on the way forward, but we are starting work on the 14th. The work will be posted per day on the Google Classroom platform as the starting point. Then teachers may use other platforms to support / enhance their lessons. We have attached a list that Ms Jessica Parsons, Grade 8 Head, has created giving all teacher codes for Google Classroom. Your child will have been given the teacher code already and received an e-mail invite, but they may have not registered yet and may also have not written the password down. If your child has any problem with google, like forgetting their personal password, Mr Holtman, our IT technician will be happy to help. He can be contacted on [email protected]. Asking questions in a virtual class. So, the question is how will children ask their teachers for help in a lesson. As these lessons will mostly not be live, we are expecting that they will email their questions to their teachers. The teacher will then email a response or possibly have a face to face with all the children who are asking questions in a Zoom meeting. We are leaving these details up to each teacher as different subjects may require very different types of engagements. What about children who have no data? At present we have no solution to support children who are in this position. Going forward we have raised this issue with the Head of Education and they are looking at options if we are put into an extended lockdown. These could include teachers going to school for some time, and creating physical work packs for children to come in and collect if they have no internet access. At present we are looking at these pupils only missing four or five school days (assuming we are back on the 20th or 21st April). When we go back to school, what will it look like? When we go back to school, we are assuming that we will still be in the throes of the Pandemic, so we will need to take careful precautions to limit possible infections at school. To this end the Governors have decided on the following new protocols: 1. We will maintain social distancing as far as possible 2. All big gatherings, like Assemblies will be on hold 3. Extra-mural activities will be curtailed, and we will not allow contact sports to practise with contact. Also, we will not play matches against other schools for Term 2.

Newsletter #12 2020 10 April 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Since last week’s newsletter/video, there have been some questions. So, let me address them this week. We are going to add

a written newsletter as some parents were unable to watch the video due to insufficient data. As I said last week, the SGB

have continued meeting via Zoom, as have the school Executive. So, we are all busy talking about the impact of the

lockdown, and applying our minds to the different scenarios possible in our future. Mrs Bronwyn Harvey, Grade 9 Head, wrote

a very informative article regarding learning at home for the Daily Dispatch, which gives very useful advice. We have attached

the article (please see the end of this Newsletter) for you to read.

Back to work on the 14th:

Yes, we are going to start online teaching on the 14th (next Tuesday). We are hoping that we will be back at school on

about the 20th, but looking at other countries further into the pandemic than South Africa, we may be out for longer. I am

sure the President will address the nation after their cabinet meeting on the 15th on the way forward, but we are starting

work on the 14th. The work will be posted per day on the Google Classroom platform as the starting point. Then teachers

may use other platforms to support / enhance their lessons. We have attached a list that Ms Jessica Parsons, Grade 8 Head,

has created giving all teacher codes for Google Classroom. Your child will have been given the teacher code already and

received an e-mail invite, but they may have not registered yet and may also have not written the password down. If your

child has any problem with google, like forgetting their personal password, Mr Holtman, our IT technician will be happy to

help. He can be contacted on [email protected].

Asking questions in a virtual class.

So, the question is how will children ask their teachers for help in a lesson. As these lessons will mostly not be live, we are

expecting that they will email their questions to their teachers. The teacher will then email a response or possibly have a face

to face with all the children who are asking questions in a Zoom meeting. We are leaving these details up to each teacher as

different subjects may require very different types of engagements.

What about children who have no data?

At present we have no solution to support children who are in this position. Going forward we have raised this issue with

the Head of Education and they are looking at options if we are put into an extended lockdown. These could include

teachers going to school for some time, and creating physical work packs for children to come in and collect if they have no

internet access. At present we are looking at these pupils only missing four or five school days (assuming we are back on the

20th or 21st April).

When we go back to school, what will it look like?

When we go back to school, we are assuming that we will still be in the throes of the Pandemic, so we will need to take

careful precautions to limit possible infections at school. To this end the Governors have decided on the following new

protocols:

1. We will maintain social distancing as far as possible

2. All big gatherings, like Assemblies will be on hold

3. Extra-mural activities will be curtailed, and we will not allow contact sports to practise with contact. Also, we will

not play matches against other schools for Term 2.

Page 2: Newsletter #12 2020 10 April 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, · 2020. 4. 11. · Newsletter #12 2020 10 April 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, Since last week’s newsletter/video, there

4. Strict hygiene protocols will be followed in each teaching venue which will include cleaning all desks by wiping

them down with a strong cleaning agent between lessons

5. Hand sanitising will be required on entering and leaving every classroom.

6. All people on campus will wear face masks

As we start work next week, this will be a massive learning curve for the teachers as well as the pupils. We have very little

experience so far in teaching content via Google Classroom, so I am sure we will make some mistakes. The teachers are all

working together and sharing their experiences with each other so we are planning to all be able to move to "best

practise" as soon as possible.

So, we will be asking you for a little help in two areas:

1. Face Masks: can you help us by making at least two cloth face masks for your child.

Over the weekend I will send out a pattern for you to follow.

2. Dispensing / Spray bottles. We have drums of sanitiser and cleaning agents, but need small bottles to dispense

it from in each class. So, if you have these bottles in your recycling, please save them and bring them to school

when we are back.

A MESSAGE FROM 2020 HEAD PREFECT, AMAVA MKUKU

guess now is the time to speak from the heart . This virus doesn’t just affect one school, town, race, celebrity or nation - it

has taken hold of the entire world. I am trying to take the positive out of the current circumstances and keeping my faith and

optimism and I hope that I can share this optimism with all of you.

In this time of crisis, I see families brought together, school communities working together and organizations working

together, helping the most vulnerable in our society. During this time of uncertainty my hope is that everyone continues to

work together and take this lockdown seriously.

Most of us are very anxious, wondering what tomorrow will bring, and hoping for a better tomorrow when we can get back

to our normal lives. Some of us are feeling helpless and hopeless, discouraged and uncertain. It is okay to feel like this for

now but just know that your staying at home is playing a vital role in flattening the curve. This virus knows no borders.

As a Matric learner, I understand the anxiety of all my fellow Matrics in particular. t’s a really tough break but we need to

put our heads down and try to be more focused than ever. Online learning starts next week so be sure that you have signed

up for all your Google Classrooms and try to get into as normal a school routine as possible, following your daily timetable

to complete work assigned by your teachers.

Continue to strive for the highest so that by the time we go back to school, you are up to date with the next steps you’ll

have to take. Make sure to maintain a good work ethic. Don’t let fear make the situation more formidable than it is. You are

not alone. If you need help, ask for it. Your teachers and tutors will be there for you, as will your fellow students.

Page 3: Newsletter #12 2020 10 April 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, · 2020. 4. 11. · Newsletter #12 2020 10 April 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians, Since last week’s newsletter/video, there

The next few weeks may make you feel restricted but if you take time to set personal goals and envision where you’d like to

be in a few months’ time, things aren’t so bad. Keep your end goals in mind.

Use this as a moment to set your intentions, imagining that you are planting seeds. Even if you must do this with limits in

place. Any restrictions on our lifestyles such as being stuck inside, won’t prevent us from finding some sense of clarity and

creating goals.

Remember to also find moments of levity that can lighten your mood and change your outlook. Yes, asilazi ingomso ukuba

lisiphathele ntoni na (which translates to yes, we don’t know what tomorrow has in store for us). The word crisis may have

created fear because it is beyond our control, but with positive mindsets any crisis is manageable.

Let’s be thankful for what we have and grateful to the health care workers, the grocery store clerks, the truck drivers, the

farmers, the janitors and other sanitation workers who continue to serve us all in these trying times. Say a silent prayer for

them, thanking them, so they can feel the urge to carry on doing what they’re doing with faith everyday. Remember that our

mindsets help to shape the outcome.

Have faith. The only way to fight this pandemic is with armed hearts and hopeful citizens.

Inkosi izakuyisikelela iAfrika nehlabathi (God will bless South Africa and the nation at large).

Stay safe, everyone!

CAMPS BAY PAST PUPIL PART OF FIRST CONTACT TEAM

FOR COVID-19 SCREENING

Camps Bay High School past pupil from the Class of 2013, Waleed Isaacs, is part of the first contact team for screening

Covid-19 patients at Tygerberg Hospital.

Waleed shared this message, “Started my internship career with the most amazing team of doctors and received all the

support I needed. Every day is a challenge but we are all doing our part to fight Covid-19 during this tough time.

Being told that you are part of the first contact team for screening patients was unnerving at first. But it was a reminder as to

why I chose this path - The love of medicine and bringing change to people's lives.

The thoughts and fears of us getting infected or bringing it home to our families, or the feeling of exhaustion after a long shift

had to be placed at the back of our minds. It is a humbling experience and we should cherish our lives. I pray that all families,

friends and essential workers are kept safe during this pandemic.

We are here for you, so please South Africa stay at home for us. Thumbs up and always stay positive. May there be brighter

and healthier days ahead for us all.

FOOD RELIEF FOR STUDENTS IN NEED

As we have mentioned before, we have been assisting some of our students and their families who have been identified by

Camps Bay High School staff members as possibly having issues with regards to food security over this difficult period. We

managed to get a bumper care package out to the families on the day we all went into lockdown and also extended this to

assist some of the Primary School children in need.

The Primary and the High School set aside a budget for this but we are very grateful to everyone who has so generously

donated funds and supplies for this project.

Thank you to all of you who so generously donated:

Krishanlall family (Rieses Food Imports) - 7 cases of Kidney beans, 7 cases of chickpeas, 7 cases of cherry tomatoes, 4

cases of Cheerios cereal, 5 cases of Choc spread, 30 cases of Nature valley and protein bars

Stoltzman family - rice and soap

Bloomberg family - rice and oil

Erni family (Tanya Hoekstra) - assorted foods

Tayler family - R1 000

Weiner family - R2 000 and assorted goods

Anonymous Past Pupil - R1 500

Mdawini family (Amber Druian) - assorted foods

Bernal family - Domestos and Jik

Waddell family (Pearlie Joubert) - fruit

Koch family (Jacqui Busch) - pasta

Bysshe family - pasta

Kemp family - assorted goods

Warren family - pasta and assorted foods

Reggio family (Michela Moroni) - assorted goods

Janna Spiro - sweets

Pienaar family (Hester Rossouw) - cookies

This project has been driven by a couple of very hardworking SGB members on the Primary and High School Governing

Bodies and we really must extend a big thank you to Cara Kahn and Simone Segall from the High School SGB, and Caroline

Krishanlall from the Primary School SGB, as well as our head prefect, Amava Mkuku, who has been a great help to Ms Mobsby

and Ms van der Spuy. We must also thank Ms Parker for lending a hand with handing out the care packs on Lockdown

Thursday.

On Wednesday this week, our families in need each received a virtual Checkers Voucher to sustain them until the end of the

current period of lockdown. If lockdown is extended, we will look into assisting these families further, budget dependent.

FINANCIAL FEEDBACK ZOOM MEETINGS WITH CBHS TREASURER

Our Treasurer, Brian Williams, has been working on scenarios for the school finances over the next year. Our budget will

need to be adaptable as it will be put under strain due to the Covid-19 Virus and Lockdown. Brian has set up Zoom meetings

for next week with the different Grades to discuss anything budget-related. If you have any suggestions or questions with

regards to the school budget, please join one of the meetings.

Note: these meetings are meant to discuss "the big picture" - not for individual queries. If your circumstances have changed,

and you will have difficulty paying your fees, please send our bursar, Lynette Olivier, an e-mail

on [email protected] so that she can make the necessary arrangements.

These Zoom meetings are scheduled from Monday to Friday next week, starting at 10h00 a.m. every day. We will allow

5 minutes for parents to join and the meeting will then start promptly at 10h05 a.m. If you are not in the "waiting room" by

then, unfortunately, you will not be included in the meeting. Due to the nature of Zoom, these meetings have a time limit of

40 minutes. Please ensure that you have any questions or suggestions prepared in advance.

THE SABC AND THE DEPARTMENT OF BASIC EDUCATION LAUNCH COVID-19 TV AND

RADIO CURRICULUM SUPPORT PROGRAMMES FOR LEARNERS

The SABC and the Department of Basic Education have launched a multi-media learner

support initiative under the banner: COVID-19 Learner Support aimed at limiting the impact of

the lockdown to the school calendar. The initiative is part of the broader efforts to prevent a

total loss of school year since the lockdown was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa as

a measure to combat the spread of corona virus known as COVID-19.

The programme is scheduled to start tomorrow, April 9, 2020 and will broadcast across three

SABC TV Channels and 13 Radio stations with online support. The series will provide

curriculum support lessons to learners in Grades 10, 11 & 12 and Early Childhood

Development (ECD). Some of the subjects covered include Maths, Physical Sciences, English

FAL, Life Sciences and Accounting. A variety of African languages are also covered under the

ECD basket.

This initiative is also launched in anticipation of the mid-year exams due in June 2020. The

campaign will be providing leaners with relevant support material they need in order for them

to walk into those exam rooms knowing they have received the support and information they

need to tackle the exams with confidence.

Learners are encouraged to check their local listings for the exact slots for radio. The SABC

and the National Department of Basic Education created the campaign to be the daily source

of information and the central shared hub for learner support.

“We invite learners to take full advantage of these resources as we believe they will assist

them a great deal during this lockdown period to catch up with their school work and better

prepare for the upcoming exams in the year,” says SABC COO Ian Plaatjes.

This multimedia initiative is supported by an online YouTube channel. If we learn by repetition,

learners will have ample opportunity to watch the content as many times as they want.

“We welcome the commitments and support from the public broadcaster to support the

education programming during this time of the lockdown. Our learners need all the support

they can get in order to continue learning at home as schools are closed because of the
