We will be closed Thursday & Friday, July 4th and 5th.

Our summer program runs through August 2nd. We will be closed the week of August 5-9 to prepare for the new school year. Our 2013-2014 school term begins Monday, August 12th.

We’re active outside just about every day, so you’re likely to encounter a bunch of happily dirty children at the end of the day. The children love playing and digging in the sand, eating lunch outside picnic style, and running around the playground kicking up pea gravel dust. Please dress your child in comfortable clothes that can withstand the rigors of outdoor play, including sturdy shoes with closed toes, sides and heels. Pea gravel works its way into the openings of some footwear, so no sandals, clogs, or shoes with open sides, please! Closed shoes also protect little feet from stinging insects (like the bee that crawled into a little girl’s open-sided shoe and stung her last year).

Summer T-Shirts Have Been OrderedAs part of the summer session enrollment fee, every child receives a cool t-shirt with our logo

emblazoned on the back to make identification of our group easier and to enhance safety when we’re partaking in activities that take us off campus. Your child should wear his/her t-shirt on off-campus field trip days (those days are indicated on the activity calendars). If you’d like to buy an extra t-shirt, they will be available from Barbara Lyons for $10.

Help us Keep Up-to-Date RecordsThis is the time of year that many parents are preparing for kindergarten and taking children to the doctor to get the

required immunizations for “big school.” It’s also the time of year that we receive our annual visit from state licensing representatives, and they want to see that we have up-to-date information on all the children. Please be sure that you provide us with information on any immunizations that your child has received since starting at our school. If you are not sure if we have the most current information, ask your child’s teacher for the immunization record we have on file and then update it, or provide us with a current copy from your health-care provider’s records so that we can update the information in our files.

Bring Sunscreen & Insect RepellantIf you haven’t already done so, please bring some sunscreen and insect repellant to keep at school and sign an “Authorization for Dispensing Medication” form to give us permission to apply it throughout the day. Teachers generally put all the bottles/ tubes in a box, use one for all the children in the class until it runs out, then grab another one from the box. If your child needs a certain brand or formulation of sunscreen or insect repellant, please let us know so we can label it and keep it separate.

Help Us Stay Safe at SchoolDuring the warm summer months, we spend lots of time on our large playground, especially at the beginning and

end of our day. Please help us keep all our children safe by always following our sign-in/sign-out policy, signing your child in and out every day on the form on the clipboard for your child’s class. We do our best to be aware of where each child in our care is at any given moment – a tall order in the best of circumstances given the size of our playground. If a parent or other authorized adult picks up a child and does not alert a school staff member (especially when we have a substitute teacher on duty), or does not fill in the sign-in/sign-out form, it makes our job that much more difficult. Please help us avoid having to go through “missing child panic” by following this important policy. Our staff members will be watching parents (and the children, of course), and issuing reminders.

Also for safety reasons, you and your child need to be especially punctual on off-campus field trip days. We cannot allow parents to drop off or pick up their children at off-campus field trip sites! Please consult your activity calendar and plan ahead so you can get your child to school in plenty of time.

Fall RegistrationPlease let Barbara know of any changes in your enrollment plans so that we can accommodate your needs. We still

welcome your referrals and we hope you’ll encourage the people you refer to get their enrollment forms turned in as soon as possible.

Classroom HappeningsFrom Deja and Angie in Classroom #2:

Welcome, everyone, to summer camp in room #2 at the Johnson County Montessori School. In our classroom, we will start the summer with “Outdoor Adventures”. Upon completion of this session (which will include movement and learning games), your child will be able to care for our environment through activities that include hands-on science, art and music. Let’s grab our explorer hats and begin the adventure!

We have a special t-shirt project coming up that will require each child to bring a plain, white t-shirt in their size by Monday, June 10. We are also planning a special morning on Friday, June 14 to celebrate fathers: Donuts with Dads. (Classroom #2 Happenings Continued)

We hope to see lots of you here on the 14th from 7:45 to 9 a.m. The children will be looking forward to sharing donuts, juice, and coffee with their dads, grandfathers, and other important men in their lives.

We’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors, too. Your child will need sunscreen (please come to school with it already applied; we will reapply before lunch and after naptime), a sun hat, and a small water bottle. Each Thursday is Water Play Day for our class. Your child will need to arrive at school with a swim suit under their clothes and wearing water

shoes; bring regular play shoes to change into and a towel. Water play days will not conflict with Kidz in Motion classes.

Don’t forget to label EVERYTHING with your child’s name!

From Emilie and Molly in Classroom #3: It has been a wonderful Spring!  May went by fast, and the children are ready to have fun outdoors.  We enjoyed our busy month with fun activities such as our Mother’s Day Tea party, School Picnic, Spring Concert, Field Day, and our Pizza Day helped us wrap up the school year with great memories. Just as we have friends leaving our classroom with the end of the school year, welcoming back old friends for the summer (like Nico and Reese) helps us take our minds off of the sadness over missing those who are moving on. Welcome to our summer program!  This summer, we will be learning about animals from around the world, and we have lots of fun activities planned.  We will again have our water play day on Thursdays.  For the month of June, we will be going to Matt Ross to have our water play every Thursday.  Then in July, we will have water play in the meadow (also on Thursdays) on our own campus.  Your child should come to school wearing a swimsuit under their play clothes and tennis shoes, and bring water shoes and a towel.  We will have everyone change into their dry clothes and tennis shoes after they’ve toweled off.  To protect the children from the sun and bugs, please remember to apply sunscreen and insect repellant as you’re getting your child ready for school.   We will reapply these as needed during the day.  We want to keep everyone hydrated, so be sure to send your child with his/her water bottle.  Please make sure that your child’s storage box, located in the South bathroom, has a complete change of summer clothing.   Please label everything with your child’s name. Please remember to let us know any changes in your child’s personal information, including email address.  I send a monthly letter to parents via email, except in August. Parents, thank you so much for your support, your generosity and your patience throughout the year.   Let’s have a FUN Summer!

From Tammy in Classroom #4:May was filled with fun things to do, as usual. The annual spring program turned out wonderfully. We are lucky that

the weather was beautiful! Our Mother’s Day Snack was another great success; the children took pride in their fruit cutting and cookie decorating skills.

I want to thank you all for all the wonderful gifts, pictures and kind words you gave me during Teacher Appreciation Week – you made me feel so special!

It’s hard to believe that the school year is over and that we have to say good-bye to so many friends as they move on to their next new adventure. The children who are moving on enjoyed their walk to Sonic for a great dessert, and of course I had one too!

As our summer program starts with new activities, please remember to apply insect repellent and sunscreen before coming to school, and make sure your child brings a water bottle (clearly labeled with his/her name) each day. Water bottles should be taken home each afternoon /evening to be washed and brought back to school the next day. Let the summer fun begin!

From Cassie in Classroom #5:We made it through another terrific school year and now happily welcome our summer program. We had to say

goodbye to a few friends who will not be returning in the fall: Marysa Lightle, Nick Nabazas, and Noam White. There are also a few children who are leaving for the summer but will be back for our next school year. Speaking of leaving – I have quite a few children going off to kindergarten after the summer: Sofia Ball, Gabreal Clary, Lorien Colucci, Maddux Newton, and Gracia O’Brien. We plan to make it an awesome summer so these friends will be sent off with a bang!

Each week of our summer is packed with fun indoor and outdoor activities. The starting times as well as the activity will be posted in the class and in the summer calendar. This will be your guide to help prepare your little one for the day. All summer, children are required to bring water bottles each day and to arrive wearing sunscreen and bug spray. Along with the scheduled activities for the school, Classroom 5 will be doing its own activities. I will be sure to give plenty of notice so you can come prepared. A few ideas I have are water play days, cooking days, and nature walks. I’m already excited for the summer! Bring on the fun and the sun!
