Dear HCE Members,As I reflect on what to write in the newsletter, it sometimes comes to me driving to work or when I first open my computer in the morning. This morning I got the signal that it was time to change my computer password. OK then…here we go again!

What I’ve done to choose a new password this past year, is to choose a reflection of something good that has happened in the past couple of weeks. Over time I’ve had a variety of interesting passwords, but they all seem to bring a smile to my face when I open my computer every morning. One of my most recent passwords included the word “dash” a reminder of the homily for Helen McMahon at her funeral – we are born and we die…and it is how we live the dash in between that is most important as we live each day to the fullest.

In a couple of months I can reveal my latest password as it will have expired by then!!! Smiles to all.

Sincerely,Karen DickrellAdvisor to HCEFamily Living Educator and Department Head

Putting your financial goals in writing can make them seem more concrete and achievable. The Creating a Spending Plan Workshop teaches basic money management, decision making, and ways to organize personal finances. Consumers who improve their household credit management to enhance financial security will benefit their communities by boosting economic stability and contributing to the foundation for growth.

What is a Spending Plan?A spending plan helps you manage money in a positive manner by creating a guide that will help you take control of your financial future and reach your goals.

Your plan will clearly show how much money you have coming in, what you’re spending it on and where you can make trade-offs to come up with extra cash. It’s also your first step in meeting larger financial goals. With a spending plan in place you will be better able to maximize financial well-being.

Wiggly Who? Wiggly The Bookworm joined us in 2008 and has been making children smile ever since. In the fall, we will be starting our 19th year with Wisconsin Bookworms with over 330 children receiving books and doing activities with readers during the 2016-17 school year.

The Early Childhood in Appleton will have 6 classes in the morning and 4 classes in the afternoon. The Head Start at St. Mary’s in Kaukauna has 1 morning 1 afternoon class and Seymour has 1 morning class. We will start reading on October 12 at Kaukauna and October 13 at Appleton and Seymour. All teachers would like you to do an activity with the children. We can always use readers or substitutes. To sign up and get the Head Start paperwork filled out call Marcie.

Our Wisconsin Bookworms program depends on all the HCE members in our county to participate to make it a success. You can help by telling people about the Wisconsin Bookworm program and how much it helps the children. You could write grants/send letters to organizations, businesses, clubs and others. We look for help to count, package and deliver the 2640 books, to the Head Starts. Thank you for all who participated in our quilt fundraisers, sold tickets, and donated prizes for the raffle. If you have any ideas for getting funds for additional books let us know. We have two grants pending and are trying to acquire matching funds for the quilt raffle.

A special thank you goes to Karen Dickrell for her support and guiding us through the program for the past 18 years.

Bits N Pieces

In Memory of Ruby M. AbendrothJuly 1927 - July 2016Ruby Mae belonged to the Greenville HCE club for many years. As an active reader for the Wisconsin BookwormsTM, Ruby brought the joy of reading to youth and teaching them the tools to learn. Ruby attended many leaders trainings and the Joy Conference, which was a favorite day for her according to her family members. We remember her as an avid gardener, vivacious Red Hatter, and a dedicated Elementary School Teacher.

Your cards and pillows brought much joy to the women vets at Camp American Legion. Listening to comments and seeing the looks of happiness and appreciation on their faces just gave one a good feeling.

The Outagamie County Fair was the week of July 26-31. We used the theme ‘76 Trombones Leading HCE. We decorated with a plethora of music notes. Posters displayed our projects and we advertised our upcoming Picture Perfect project. We also handed out musical pencils. Thank you to the committee members who spent time designing, creating and setting/tearing down the booth for fair.

Facebook for your ClubAs of August 2014, WAHCE has a Facebook Page. The idea of creating a page came about from the recognition the need to have a greater online presence and allow WAHCE to communicate with all association counties in a quick and efficient way to post meeting dates, get quick feedback from members, and promote events taking place in their county.

If you are interested in creating a Facebook presence for your club or county, be sure to keep these safety and privacy guidelines in mind as you get started. These guidelines will assist counties in creating an online presence in line with the goals and ideals of WAHCE.

• No recipes/written instructions for crafts, homemade cleaners, etc will be allowed to be posted on any WAHCE Facebook page.

• Keep in mind that not all members may have access to computers or consistent access to high speed internet. Make sure you are using a variety of communication strategies to engage and attract new members.
