Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,

Last Friday Kathy and I attended a ‘Welcome’ morning tea for new families to St Joseph’s. We received an invitation from the

newly created “Parent Liaison Team.” Catherine Petrakis, Kate Mason, Michelle Blackburn and Caryn Vonhof. The ‘team’ is really

committed to nurturing and building strong connections between school and home, assisting families transition to school with

ease. They have created an information sheet which is enclosed with this newsletter. It is so heartening to have parents who

want to get involved and ‘make a difference!’ Thank you!

Learning Conversations

In a few weeks you will have an opportunity to attend a Learning Conversation. It is important for your child (ren) to share their

learning with you, celebrate their achievements and together with the class teacher (s) discuss and set future learning goals for

the remainder of the year. Enclosed with this newsletter are instructions on how to make a booking online. If you require

assistance, please do not hesitate to ask the office staff.

Staff News

A few weeks ago we farewelled Chantal Giannopoulos who resigned from her Educational Support Officer position at St Joseph’s

to pursue a new career at Norwood Pilates. Chantal has been a valued and committed staff member for seven years.

I know Chantal will be missed by the St Joseph’s community. We extend our best wishes to Chantal as she begins this new

position.

ENROLMENT INTERVIEWS ARE NOW TAKING PLACE THIS TERM FOR PRESCHOOL 2018 AND

RECEPTION 2019. If you have not heard from the office and you have a child who is eligible

to start Preschool or School please notify the office.

St Joseph’s Day:

On Monday, March 20th, we will celebrate the feast of St. Joseph with a whole school Mass,

beginning at 9.15 a.m. (This time enables the children to gather in their classrooms and then

come over to the hall ready to begin Mass, rather than race from the playground into the hall.)

We celebrate the feast of St. Joseph for a variety of reasons. The Church honours Joseph as the

man who was entrusted with the care and upbringing of Jesus. The scriptures tell us that Joseph

was an honourable man, a person of deep faith in God, who loved and cared deeply for Mary

and Jesus in their home in Nazareth. Joseph’s deep faith in God led him to trust in God; he made

sure that Jesus and Mary were safe, even if it meant having to leave their home town to escape

troubles and possible loss of life. Joseph was a carpenter and provided for his family; he also

taught Jesus his trade and with Mary, shared his faith and love of God with Jesus.

Another reason why we celebrate this feast day, along with the whole Church, is that Joseph is the patron saint of the sisters

of St. Joseph who founded this school. St. Mary MacKillop chose St. Joseph to be the protector and great carer of the Sisters

wherever they went. Just as Joseph cared for Jesus, so, too, he has always cared for the sisters in their work and in the day to

day difficulties they faced; often these difficulties meant that the sisters had to rely on local communities for support, for food

and shelter. St. Joseph is a wonderful role model for us as we try to support those in our community who suffer, who are

struggling and who need to feel loved and cared for.

Please come and join us for our school Mass next Monday at 9.15am as we celebrate the feast of St. Joseph.

Antibullying Day / Harmony Day

This is the message of our “Antibullying Focus Day” on Friday 24 March. Rita Garreffa and Kate Elmendorp have organised a

fabulous day that will reinforce this message, promote resilience and courage to speak up when bullying behavior is witnessed.

Please take the opportunity of discussing the day with your child and help us to eliminate bullying behaviour.

On Friday March 24th Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing program ‘Being Brave’ to the school.

We have included more information about the production in the newsletter.

Process for Parents and Staff to Resolve Issues

Today each family will receive St Joseph’s policy pamphlet on the Process for Parents and Staff to Resolve Issues. We would

like to draw your attention to the Problem Resolution Procedure which states that “on no account is any parent to confront

someone else’s child”. If you do have any concerns the first point of contact is with your child’s class teacher. If your concern

is not resolved for you then a meeting with one of the Leadership team will be organised.

Traffic/Safety Issues:

Once again we draw your attention to the need for all parents to be vigilant

in and around the school drop off and pick-up areas. Of particular concern is

the habit of many parents doing U turns in Albemarle Street, while traffic is

trying to move through from both directions at very busy times of the day.

We also have concerns about parents parking their cars across driveways of

private homes and blocking residents. A couple of weeks ago we had a

near-miss experience at the Pedestrian crossing on Grange road and we have

taken steps to address these issues and concerns with the Traffic Operations personnel, the Council and

S.A. Police. Please be aware that our concerns are being taken seriously and we are working closely with

the Police to monitor the flow of traffic, the safety of all concerned, and the traffic and parking rules in

place for all members of the community. The Police have indicated that they have a zero tolerance policy

when it comes to people not abiding by the rules that are in place to keep everyone safe. In recent days, in

another place, a child was seriously injured while walking to school. We do not wish this to happen to

anyone in our care within our community, so we ask you to exercise great care and patience. Thank you for

your support in this important matter.

BRAINSTORM PRODUCTIONS: Award-Winning In-School Theatre Performances

Being Brave

On Friday March 24th Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing program ‘Being Brave’ to the school.

Being Brave is a live theatre production which will help students accept change, deal with their emotions and bounce back

when things go wrong. The production is inspirational and empowering, providing kids with strategies such as good

communication and positive self-talk, to help make them more resilient and able to navigate life’s storms.

Being Brave is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and the program has been developed in consultation with teachers,

psychologists, as well as real-life student experiences. The methodology of the program is safe, supportive and

nonjudgmental and designed to provide students with positive and useful tools they can use in their everyday lives.

More than 350,000 Australian students have already benefited from Brainstorm Productions multi award-winning

educational theatre programs over the past twelve months. Their programs cater to the specific wellbeing needs of students,

and Maria would also love to hear from anyone who is able to help with the

washing of the tea towels weekly or fortnightly.

Can you help! Volunteers are very valuable people in a school community. If you have some time we

are looking for volunteers to help in our Tuckshop, Breakfast Club and Coffee Club. Current Police Clearances are

necessary. If you need a Police Clearance staff in the office are happy to help you through this process.

The Parent Federation has formed a partnership with Caritas Australia to support your family to share in the Lenten journey.

Each week we will share ways you can talk together about the messages in each story and, together, be inspired to learn

more and create change.

Dear Parents and Carers,

The sporting season has commenced and most teams are starting to form new relationships with peers

and coaches. It is important that all students feel included and willing to move out of their comfort zone

to grow as both a team mate and person. I have no doubt that our students will form strong bonds with

each other as they develop skills to enhance their desired sporting interests. Importantly, I have received

some positive feedback from our coaches and managers indicating how well our teams are representing

the St Joseph’s Community. It is a great feeling to know that our students are representing and up-

holding values from our School Ethos. Please continue to represent this fantastic behaviour!

On a related note, please be aware that previous weeks have consisted of multiple days reaching over 30

degrees. If the temperature reaches 35 or more, sporting commitments will be postponed to a later date.

If this is to happen, I will email all acting volunteers, as well as caregivers to ensure there is no confusion.

If I have not heard from sporting venues or associations then it is assumed that games will still be played.

Once again, it is very important to check your emails, so please check your inbox regularly.

Good luck sporting members, it will be a very hot week – ensure you stay hydrated!

Preschool Highlights of Term 1 Week 2 - 2017

Bee-Bots are programmable floor robots that have been purpose-built for use with Early years children. They can move accurately in 15 cm steps and turn in 90degree increments. We introduced them on Friday and had our first experience of using directional commands to get the Bee Bots to locations on the street map.

Many experiences at Preschool are

photographed and the children are

invited to contribute their voice to the

documentation.

This enables educators to observe and

record learning and notice and

describe the child becoming numerate

and literate.

This week we began the season of

Lent by cooking pancakes for Shrove

Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is all about

using up the ingredients that many

people try to avoid during Lent. Many

countries hold festivals and

celebrations at this time such as

Carnevale.

As children play and experiment

with the water and ice, they are

investigating concepts such as..

Water is solid when it freezes.

Some things float and others sink.

Some things melt when heated.

Mathematical language such as

large, small, heavy and light is

also evident as the children talk

about their discoveries.

By experimenting with water and

ice children will observe the

effects of change and they can

predict what will happen based

on their knowledge and prior

experience.
