Learning to Serve Others the Lasallian WayLearning at SJI International involves challenging andinspiring experiences inside, and frequently outside, theclassroom that develop a genuine interest in the academicdisciplines and encourage personal development.

Besides obtaining academic qualifications that open thedoors to the best universities around the world, each studentleaves school with a spiritual dimension, and passionateinterests and hobbies developed through sports, adventure, music and drama activities, that nurture a sense of self-worthand life-long inspiration. A strong sense of moralresponsibility is reflected through an active commitment tothe service of other people, particularly the least fortunate.

Our dedicated teachers use a child-centred, active learningapproach, and strive to support the maximal development ofeach student. Teachers communicate with students on anindividual level while celebrating each student’s uniquelearning style, encouraging them to think and to act ratherthan to simply respond to the situations they encounter. Thelearning environment requires intellectual creativity andactive class participation, providing students withopportunities for self-discovery, inspiration, exploration, andexperimentation.

The learning experience is central to everything we do,as we reflect an international, modern-day Lasallianeducation. Learning at the High School has four coreelements, each providing experiential opportunities fora truly holistic education leading to the highest levelsof personal growth.

(L-R) A day in High School: Academic learning in a wide range of subjectsincluding the Sciences; House Colours come alive on special occasions like SportsDay; "A Day Without Shoes" teaches humility and understanding for the lessfortunate; the SJI International Samba Band performing at the Singapore BotanicGardens; students' co-curricular experience can range from drama to fencing, and more; rapelling by the side of a waterfall for outdoor education; volleyball isamong one of the many competitive and recreational sports available.

Academic LearningWe believe that students achieve their full potential when they are captivated and enthused by their learning. We therefore encourage ourstudents to take increasing responsibility for their own learning, which develops actively in the form of interaction, collaboration and teacherintervention.

Facilitated through opportunities within the academic framework, students exercise choice, develop goals, plan their approach and workindependently with support from their teacher and peer groups. We strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable to makeand learn from mistakes, without feeling inadequate. They are encouraged to be reflective and capable of monitoring and reviewing their ownlearning.

Our Learning Development Department supports students with various mild learning needs both within and outside of the classroom.

Technology for LearningWe believe that technology has an important role to play insupporting and extending learning, both within lessons and outsideof the classroom. 21st century skills, centred on collaboration, criticalthinking, creativity and communication, are becoming increasinglyimportant in our global society, and students need to be able toemploy a range of technologies effectively and responsibly. We havea team of Technology Coaches in school who lead the integration oftechnology for learning and support our teachers to effectivelyincorporate its use into lessons and other learning activities.

FAQsAre students able to use their mobile phones and devices inschool?Students may use their mobile phones and other electronic devices, inline with our ICT Use Policy (available on our website). Mobile phonesand devices must not be used in classrooms without the expresspermission of the teacher.

Is there a 1:1 laptop programme? We have implemented a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) laptopprogramme for Grades 7 to 12. Many of our students, particularly inGrades 9 to 12, already use their own laptops/devices in class, andresearch shows that students who access their own computers are moreengaged with the technology, take greater pride and ownership of theknowledge they create and develop as more independent learners.

We require all students to have an appropriate laptop that they bringto school each day. We provide advice and guidance about theprogramme and recommended devices.

The High SchoolLearning Experience

Page 9: St Joseph’s Institution International

Outdoor EducationThe experience of outdoor education provides opportunities to learn throughexperience and develop resilience, determination and resolve. Students recognise theimportance of working independently and collaboratively and become active citizens intheir school and community. Self-discipline and team work are challenged during theseresidential activities where students step out of their ‘comfort zones’ and supportothers around them. Students gain confidence in their own abilities, discover innovativeways to overcome obstacles, and turn challenges into positive life experiences.

Our Grades 7, 8, and 9 students participate in week-long expeditions overseasincluding Bintan, Indonesia for Grade 7; Tioman, Malaysia for Grade 8; the choice ofBali, Indonesia; Cameron Highlands in Malaysia, Sydney, Australia and two destinationsin Thailand, for Grade 9. Grade 10 and Grade 10 Foundation Course participate in anexpedition to Northern Thailand while Grade 11 students plan and implement themilestone tradition of Challenge Week, wherein they travel to another country to servea charity of their choice as a self-organised group. Other additional educational tripsand personal development programmes – like the National Youth Achievement Award– are encouraged, challenging students’ learning as far as they are willing to go.

7

Service LearningA fundamental aspect of our holistic education islearning through Service. All students are expectedto support a range of charities and organisations, going beyond their self-interests and serving theneeds of others. The school currently supports 40different service activities, including local communityevents and overseas projects that provideopportunities to engage with various communities. These activities promote an appreciation of theworld, develop skills and understanding that aredriven by experience, and create significantopportunities for personal development.

Co-Curricular LearningCo-Curricular Activities ‘allow learning to happen’and require students to make a sustainedcommitment, developing their motivation andleadership to succeed, and having great fun in theprocess. From the rhythm of dance and music, to thegrit of soccer and rock climbing, and intra- and inter-school competitions, there are ample opportunitiesfor students to develop talent, share passions, andeven initiate their own activities. These activitiesprepare students to become fully developed andresponsible global citizens. In addition, all Catholicstudents in Grade 7 participate in at least one of theCatholic League Activities, organised under theCatholic Archdiocesan Education Centre.

Pastoral Care at the High School supports students’ spiritual, physical and social wellbeing. As the welfare of our studentsis our first priority, all staff play a role in supporting ourstudents. With empathy and appropriate guidance for theirlearning journey, students develop a real sense of belongingin a safe and supportive environment that will allow them tothrive both socially and academically.

The Grade Heads and Tutors administer pastoral care underthe leadership of the Vice-Principal (Pastoral). There is a Headof Grade for each Grade Level who works with Tutor teamsto facilitate supportive and extensive pastoral care. Eachstudent is assigned to a Tutor Group led by a Tutor, who seeshis/her tutees at the start of each school day, takesattendance, and communicates with parents, subjectteachers, and the tutees themselves about the student’sprogress. Time is spent in 1 to 1 conversations about

academic work, activities, service projects, friendship issues, school life and individual student welfare.

Our High School Nurse is responsible for health serviceswhich include emergency medical help, basic medicaltreatment, or the medical assessment of a student. OurSchool Counsellor and School Psychologist provide supportto students who wish to discuss and resolve social andemotional issues.
