Dear Parents, Carers and Community,

It is fantastic to have some rain.

The Department of Education continues to require schools to

maintain social distancing in the first phase of return in Week 3.

We will do this by ensuring our classes maintain working in their

allocated rooms if all students return we will still be under the

10 students in each room recommendation.

I have included in this newsletter the data collected from the

COVID19 school outbreaks. The numbers confirm that schools

are safe places, but we must not become complacent.

Cleaning of the school was increased last term with all surfaces

being wiped down. From today regular extra cleaning will be

done after recess and lunch. All classrooms have soap and hand

sanitiser.

Staff who are considered by the Department of Education as

being at greater risk, such as older staff, those with chronic

health conditions, pregnant staff, staff with health or other

conditions causing low immunity, are being asked to work from

home for their own safety. This has complicated things over the

last few days of last week and also due to the rain, has meant

that only teaching staff were on site.

All staff are doing a magnificent job, with the diversity of

learning that is now being delivered through a variety of

mediums our students are really lucky to have such dedicated

teachers and support staff.

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students

I hope you’ve all had a lovely break over the holidays and a good start to the school term last week. It was so lovely to

hear of so much widespread rain around recently! I, like all the staff at ICS are really missing seeing the kids!

We have been lucky enough to receive some fantastic resources that are available for parents with some tips to make

home based learning a little easier on everyone, the information is very valuable though I did find some of it to be quite

intense. I’ve done my best to condense it to some key points that I believe are the real take home message

(pardon the pun!).

Many parents are feeling a little overwhelmed/anxious about the amount of work their child is missing from school

(you aren’t alone!). Of the 13 years of schooling available to complete; about 5 will be completely forgotten!

It’s a staggering thought however it puts things into perspective when thoughts of what has been “missed”

over the past few months become overwhelming.

NAPLAN & many other formal assessments have been postponed for the year.

Three things to focus on;

Emotional regulation which is the ability to control and keep in check emotions that may become otherwise

overwhelming (eg can be seen as a meltdown in younger kids). Children learn the ability to self-regulate

through watching parents and caregivers so talking about emotions is time well spent and will be beneficial

for years to come during careers, relationships and everyday life. This is something I’ve very passionate

about, feel free to reach out if you’d like more information on this

Motivation is mostly driven by passion and experiencing success; as we know we are more motivated by areas

we find success in and less so in difficult ones. While younger kids have strong motivation for learning this

can lessen as they get older; parents can use this time together to rekindle motivation through doing things

that interest children.

Academic self-efficacy essentially means that if we believe students can do well, they are more likely to

succeed. While cheering on the small wins may seem tedious it plays an enormous role in boosting

confidence and in turn motivation.

Encourage children to overcome a fear of failure. Success is not defined as being good at everything rather

discovering what you are good at and developing those strengths.

Awareness that your learning strengths may be very different to your children’s; perhaps a frustrating realisation to

say the least! This is something to keep in mind when an activity may seem plain as day to achieve but your

little one isn’t quite on the same page.

Extend activities of interest to develop learning. If your child loves sport for example and you are having difficulties

engaging them with maths, you may be able to relate sports statistics to the question rather than just a straight

forward maths equation. Learning becomes easier and more meaningful when we can relate it to something a

child is already good at.

This is just a very basic summary however if you are interested, further information can be found at

www.mylearningstrenghts.com . There is a tool there that can be used to complete an analysis of yourself and

your learning strengths, once these are identified you may find it easier to see how you can help your child

towards successful learning.

By all accounts everyone is doing a really fantastic job of multitasking and throwing yourself into something you

may not have necessarily signed up to do when the year began! Be kind to yourself and take time during the

day to reflect on what you have achieved rather than what may have to wait until tomorrow.

As always, I am available at any time via email [email protected] or by phoning the school I can then arrange a time to call you back. All the best

Jessie Rogers
