YEARS OF EDUCATION AT IVANHOE CENTRAL SCHOOL
2014 ICS 125th ANNIVERSARY & PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
We wish to record our appreciation to all invited guests, and students, teachers, parents/caregivers, community
members, past and present, who contributed to making our 125th Anniversary Celebrations and the Presentation
of Awards on Friday 21st November, a resounding success. Everyone enjoyed the 125th anniversary morning
assembly which included the presentation of awards and prizes to our senior secondary students in Years 11-12
and entertaining songs sung by our students. Of particular note was the rendition of Sweet Home Ivanhoe, which
was appreciated and commented upon by many parents and visitors.
Our guests who gave congratulatory, nostalgic and inspirational speeches included, Mrs Trish Webb, the Broken
Hill-based Director of Public Schools, NSW Far West Network, Ms Alison Johnstone, former Ivanhoe Central
School student and current Aboriginal Education Learning and Engagement Officer with the Department of
Education and Communities in Griffith, and Mr Gordon Hay, our immediate and longest serving past Principal.
Mr Hay presented Mikaela Hewitt with the Senior Secondary Academic Award while Ammeelee Alexander
received the Senior Secondary Encouragement Award from Ms Alison Johnstone. Maddison Brennan and
Ammeelee Alexander were presented with their TVET Metal & Engineering 120 hours certificates of attainment
by Dennis Manuel from Western Institute of TAFE in Broken Hill. Ms Rynnette Gentle, the Broken Hill Area
Service Manager of Richmond PRA, presented Nthabiseng Kanedi with the Reuben F Scarf Award for
Commitment. Maddison Brennan was presented with the prestigious Caltex Best All Rounder Award by Mrs
Trish Webb. Mrs Heather McGinty, our longest serving current staff member, and the graduating Year 12
students did the honour of cutting and sharing the 125th anniversary cake. The morning assembly ended with the
students being presented with backpacks, stationery packs and water bottles by our Relieving Principal, Mr
Densmore.
The morning assembly was followed by open classroom visits by parents and guests, and an appetising BBQ
lunch, enjoyed by everyone. We were all back in the school hall for the K-10 Presentation of Awards and
entertainment by our students at 4:00 pm.
We were joined in the afternoon by the Honourable John Williams, the Member for Murray-Darling in the NSW
Legislative Assembly, who presented the 2014 NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge Medallions to Cooper
McMaster (Primary) and Kesha Srbinoski (Secondary). It was great to see Mr John Quinn, former Deputy
Principal at the school in the early 1980s, and Mrs Meredith Hammond, our former long-serving School
Administrative Manager, visit us for the celebrations. Mr Quinn did the honour of presenting the Overall House
Winner Trophy to the captains of Cobb House while Mrs Hammond presented the Sports Boy of the Year trophy
to Jordan Srbinoski and the Sports Girl of the Year trophy to Akanete Kitione.
Primary Academic Awards for K-3 and 4-6 were presented to Elsie Kitione and Jesse Weekes respectively,
while Akanete Kitione received the Secondary Academic Award for Years 7-10. Years 9-10 TVET
students Akanete Kitione, Jordan Srbinoski and Damia Robertson were presented with their TVET Metal
& Engineering 120 hours certificates of attainment.
Mrs Webb presented Chelsee Weekes with the prestigious Ivanhoe Central School Good Citizenship
Award, with her name being added to the school’s honour board. The evening culminated with delightful
entertainment provided by our students, including the pre-schoolers. The song and dance routines included
in the Time Warp Performance by our students were especially enjoyable. The afternoon ended with the
singing of Christmas carols by all students.
Later in the evening, many of us enjoyed an excellent dinner, thanks to the organisation of Jane Jones and
the P&C and the culinary efforts of Lionel Fitzpatrick of Oasis Catering. It was a great time to catch up
and reminisce about the past with many of our former students, staff and community members, some of
whom had travelled far to join us in Ivanhoe. The entertainment provided by the band was also enjoyed
and appreciated by all.
Apart from everyone else who contributed, we record our special thanks and appreciation to:

their magnanimous gesture in sponsoring and paying for the bulk of the expenses for our 125th

IVANHOE YOUTH CENTRE
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Friday 28th November, 4.30pm @ the IYC
The Ivanhoe community is invited to join the Board of Trustees for an AGM on Friday the
28th November.
The AGM will look to appoint a new committee to help manage the Youth Centre’s
operation.
Every week we have between 10 and 15 children using the Youth Centre, and prior to the
increased temperatures, we had up to 8 adults using the facility.
Without the Youth Centre, our community will:
lose the only place where our children can play sports, games or simply
engage with each other in a safe environment outside of school;
lose the only place in town with exercise equipment for kids and adults;
lose a venue where social activities (e.g. movie nights) can be hosted in the
near future.
Without your say, the Board of Trustees will have no choice
but to close the IYC down.
We particularly encourage parents and young people (14-18 years) to join us in saving the
Youth Centre.
As Mr. Walker has resigned as president, the Youth Centre is now closed and will remain
closed unless a committee is appointed.
