Presidential Perspective

The weather in February started off nice enough but the rains came as we prepared for the drive from Temecula to Palm Springs for the club’s weekend getaway. Blustery weather and a light sprinkling of rain made the drive on the Pines to Palms Highway very enjoyable.

It has been almost thirty years since I have been to Palm Springs and Diana has never been. We spent the afternoon walking downtown, having lunch at Sherman’s Deli, and driving through the neighborhoods, looking at all the homes. Palm Springs is an eclectic mix of Spanish Revival and mid-century modernism. If the air wasn’t so dry, we might think about moving there. It doesn’t get too hot there during the summer, does it?

Dinner was at our host hotel, the Riviera Palm Springs Resort. Diana said that out of all the banquets we have been to throughout the years, with all the different organizations to which we belong, that salmon, asparagus, and mashed potato dinner was the best she ever tasted. It was like the chef really cared that we enjoyed the food.

If you missed Palm Springs, you missed a heck of a weekend. Don’t miss out twice in a row – sign up for the Jeremy’s drive and lunch in Julian. If Bob Proctor is half as entertaining in person as he is in his email blasts, we are in for a heck of a show.

The 2020 JCNA Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place at the end of the month in Las Vegas. Chief Judge Pete Rieth, 2nd Vice President Nedra Rummell, and I are attending, representing the club and getting all the scoop on what the next year will bring. Interestingly, the main topics will be membership and Concourses, topics of which the three of us are intimately involved.

Speaking of Concourses, registration is open for our 56th Annual Concours d’Elegance. I created a special 2020 Concours page on our website – no password needed. Just look on the left menu bar directly under the Home Tab. There are also registration links for the LA Concours in May and the Idyllwild Jagstravaganza in October on the club members’ page.

Until then, take care

Mark

Reminder #1: Remember when going out of town to print out a copy of the cover page of the most recent “Jaguar Tracks” and take it with you. When you find a good setting just snap a picture of yourselves holding up the cover page with a nice view of the scene behind you. And if you’ve got your Jag in the shot, even better. Then all you need to do when you get home is email the picture to [email protected] along with a description of your location and I’ll do the rest to feature it in a “Where in the Word” article!

Reminder #2: Don’t forget about our “Getting to Know” feature! It’s intended to help all of us get to know each of you just a little bit better. Tell us about yourselves. Tell us how you became enamored with Jaguars, how you came to be part of our great club and anything else you’d like to share. Don’t be shy. If you don’t tell us about yourselves we’re just going to make stuff up. Might as well let the cat out of the bag and send me an email with a write-up and a picture to [email protected] and I’ll run a feature!

SDJC Palm Springs Retreat – Riviera Resort

I personally have always enjoyed our club drives that include an overnight stay. It gives us an opportunity to spend more time with our fellow members and listening to interesting car enthusiast stories, particularly over cocktails! When I started to plan this event, there were two concerning factors – weather and hoping we could fulfill our hotel guarantee. Well almost everything worked out for the positive, about the negative later… We had 46 members participating, some just for the Saturday, others for the weekend, and the lucky ones that extended their stay in beautiful and mostly sunny Palm Springs for a 3 or 4 day mini-vaca. Without a doubt we made our guarantee, had 13 Jaguars on the Saturday drive, and 44 dinner guests. Of the 44, we had six fellow club members from our sister clubs – Inland Empire and Jaguar Owners Club of LA. A true Southern California Jaguar multi-club event. After a sunny beautiful drive via Pines to Palms Scenic Byway on Friday, I arrived in time to join other members for a delightful Italian dinner. Now for the negative, regretfully I woke Saturday to the dreaded prediction of rain in the mountains. Everything was great heading out on 111, when I encountered my first close call of the day. Deciding the SUV in front of me was driving too slowly (imagine that!) as we approached a red light, I changed to the right lane. As the light turned green, I heard a series of big bangs and horns. Looking in my mirror, to my horror, I saw the SUV’s tailgate opened and several pieces of luggage flew out the back bouncing onto the road. Thankfully I changed lanes, otherwise, there would have been body work required – definitely for my F-Type and maybe even me! I could be open for body work, but not that kind! I had a few sprinkles on the drive, but my main concern was the black clouds to the west. After arriving at Starbucks in Temecula, Dave and Windley Putnam were the first to arrive. Dave graciously put together the SDJC feather flag as the rain started. We allowed a bit of extra time due to weather; of the 14 anticipated Jags, 13 showed up. I actually had both my Jags on the drive - my daughter, LaShel, and her friend Tom joined our group and drove my XJL. As we began our drive, the rain continued to increase. Mark and Diana Hodges led the convoy through the driving rain, stopping at the Anza Dairy Queen for provisions. Back on the road, the pouring rain continued, turning into giant snowflakes. I must tell you I haven’t driven in snow for 30 years and really wasn’t concerned about accumulation, but the temperature continued dropping, stabilizing at 35 degrees! The rain began to be lighter and seeing sunshine in the distance over the valley, I was getting comfortable again. Little did I know, behind us was an erratic HONDA driver who was passing each Jag on double yellow lines! Yep, he ended up behind me, tailgating from the overlook down the mountain - not a comfortable feeling. For this part of the drive, Mike Zavos and his friend Ella lead the procession to the hotel.

March 2020 8

Several of our members enjoyed the McCormick’s Auction, meeting up with Bob Proctor and his son Sean for the parade of cars across the auction block. Where was Ali you ask? Lucky Ali was vacationing in Hawaii with her daughter, sister and nephew. We all missed Bob and Ali! While Tim Bennett, Chuck Leuthen, and Martin Avery were attending the auction, Debbie, Kathy, and Diah enjoyed Palm Springs by looking at new homes, shopping, listening to music, and maybe a margarita or two! Never fear, all were safe as Debbie was a DD. Our dinner was held in the El Dorado Rooms of the Convention Center. We were given an extra-large space which was divided into dining and cocktail areas. Thanks to Mark Hodges for transporting the sound system and signs and especially for setting them up for me. Diah Avery and Marie Allen assisted with check-in, while our new photographer, Matt Allen, was busy taking photos of each guest. Before dinner Mark introduced members and guests from the other clubs. After dinner Mike Zavos reported on the October IEJC Concours in Idyllwild and encouraged members to register and make their hotel reservations. Mike also offered an outstanding opportunity for reduced ticket packages for the La Jolla Concours. For the SDJC Comedy Central Award, we had three participants, Loren Bayer from IEJC, Chuck Leuthen and Mark Hodges from SDJC. Since it was a close call. I made the executive decision to declare our guest, Loren, as the winner. Sunday was a beautiful day and by mid-morning many of us were in the outside café enjoying our breakfast before our drive back home. It’s always a pleasure to be a part of these club adventures and I’m looking forward to the next one……. Humm I may have an idea for next year! Cheers Nedra

March 2020

By Pete Rieth, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club 2020 Concours Judges Training. Preparations have begun for our Saturday July 11th Concours #56 being held at Spanish

Landing Park East. Hats Off to Mark Hodges, our President and Concours Chair (among other things) for doing the many tasks it takes to make our event happen! Provided below is a summary of the three types of Concours-related training that I will offer this year. Please RSVP to me at least 3 days before any class that you plan to attend so that there will be plenty of refreshments and training materials available.

• Concours 101. A classroom presentation, show and tell, and informal discussion of JCNA concours processes and expectations for those unfamiliar with concours but interested in learning about it. No experience is required; you only need an interest in learning more about JCNA concours. One weekend session is planned on Saturday, May 16th beginning at 1:30 PM in the San Diego Auto Museum training room. The session will last about 90 minutes.

• Concours 201. A session to get Apprentice Judges and Judges whose certification has expired (or is about to) up to speed so that they can participate as Certified Judges at our 2020 Concours. Experience as an Apprentice Judge or former JCNA certified Judge is a “plus”, but any member is welcome to participate. Hands on judging of Jaguars using official score sheets, JCNA Concours Rule Books and JCNA Judge's Guides will be emphasized. One weekend session (27/28 June TBD) for Apprentices and anyone else wishing to brush up a bit on concours judging processes. A volunteer will be most welcome to host the event. More to follow in these columns.

• Concours 301. The formal, annual Judges’ Refresher Training is required each year by JCNA to recertify Judges for the current concours year. It includes a classroom presentation, a review of the more important aspects of the JCNA Concours Rule Book, and discussions of the Rule Book changes for 2020. I plan to highlight the outcome of significant initiatives addressed at the 21 March 2020 AGM and their potential impact on our activities. The written 2020 Judges’ Test will be administered. Everyone is welcome to attend. This is an excellent way for Judges and Entrants to learn more about JCNA Concours Rules. Two weekend sessions are planned: Session 1 on Saturday, May 16th at the San Diego Auto Museum beginning at 9 AM, and session 2 on Saturday, June 20th beginning at 9 AM at Classic Showcase in Oceanside. Each session normally lasts about 3 hours.

2020 JCNA Concours in the Southwest Region.

Here are some established 2020 JCNA Concours of interest to SDJC members. I will update this list as JCNA approves and posts the Concours sanctions requested by the individual clubs.

• 25-26 April - Club Jaguar A.C., Gran Concurso de Elegancia Jaguar Club Mexico Las Caballerizas, Dos Rios, Huixquilucan, Estado de Mexico (JCNA South Central Region)

• 17 May - Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles Concours, Muckenthaller Cultural Center, Fullerton, California

• 11 July - San Diego Jaguar Club, Cancer Survivor's Park, Spanish Landing Park East, 3600 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA

• 2-3 October - IEJC Jagstravaganza, Idyllwild Inn, Idyllwild, CA

• 24 October - Jaguar Club of Southern Arizona, La Encantada, Tucson, AZ

Movie Trivia. Which Jaguar model leads in number of film appearances? You might guess E-type, but WRONG! Actually, XJ40 leads with 663 appearances. The Series III E-Type is in 2nd place with 601 sightings. And the XK 120? A mere 204 (of which my favorite is a dark Saigon alley scene with Christopher Walken in The Deer Hunter - https://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_13937-Jaguar-XK-120-1953.html - I cannot imagine him actually fitting into one!). For more fun, see the Source: https://www.imcdb.org/vehicles_make-Jaguar.html. Looking for a Few Good Women and Men for Concours Judges. Preparations are underway for our July 11th 2020 Concours d'Elegance and we are looking for members interested in becoming Certified JCNA Concours Judges. Please contact me if you are interested.

If you have any questions about this article or JCNA Concours d'Elegance participation, please contact me by Email at: [email protected] or by phone/WhatsApp on (619) 813-2005.

Functional Chair Reports: Advertising: Dan – Update given. Auto Museum Representative: Pete P. - Report filed electronically - The new Executive Director of the museum is Lenny Leszzczynski. He is a native San Diegan and lives in Spring Valley. He is an experienced fundraiser. The museum has a plan to modernize and expand the museum to the West behind the existing building costing up to $75 million. The Committee of 100, which is the Balboa Park planning body, has a plan, already approved by the San Diego City Council, to eliminate 174 parking spaces from the Aerospace museum and North past the ComicCom museum, without any parking replacement. The plan is to build a pedestrian park with walkways, seating and fountains as originally planned in 1935. Work has begun with the removal of the two huge ficus trees in front of the museum to permit painting of the building. Palm trees will replace the ficus. The original tiles set to be installed above the front doors will wait for the painting. The new show, which began last Saturday, is “1970s cars and memorabilia”.
