Message from Mr. Murphy
Prom & Graduation Update!
AP & IB Testing Info!
Important Dates
PTSA & Booster Too Much to List!
MESSAGE FROM MR. MURPHY, PRINCIPAL The last marking period is here and end of year activities are fast approaching! Spring sports are off to a slow start, as a result of the most recent snow and difficult field conditions. We are in the process of catching up from many missed practices and games, so please continue to check our website or Twitter to stay up-to-date on all rescheduled events. Spring Break begins this Friday, April 3, and school resumes on Monday, April 13. The weather did not stop one of our annual rites of spring, the annual mulch sale on March 21, sponsored by the hardworking parents of our Booster Club. This event raised thousands of dollars for school programs, scholarships, and our stadium renovation project. Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers, staff, students, and community members for your support of these events and special projects.
Later in April, please be sure to make plans to come to the theater as the O’Shea Players present: The Wiz, April 23, 24, at 7pm and April 25 at 2pm (matinee) and 7pm! Click here for more information.
Another important springtime event i s the junior and senior Prom, to be held on Friday, May 1 from 8:00 – 11:30 p.m. at the Marriott Washingtonian Center (R i o). Tickets are on sale at $ 6 0 per person. All financial obligations, including the cap and gown fee for seniors, must be paid before purchasing prom tickets. All prom information, including forms for early release on May 1, and guest forms (for individuals not attending Watkins Mill HS), will be given to students when purchasing a ticket and can be found here. Please note that due to budget constraints and low participation, there will be no Post-Prom event this year. In addition, as we approach Prom, students are busy coming up with creative ways to ask a date to Prom (a.k.a “Promposals”). While well-intended and clever, in some cases, these proposals have resulted in uncomfortable situations. As a result, I have written an Open Letter to students about these “Promposals,” urging students to think about new ways going about this school tradition. The letter can be found here. Testing updates: As you know, this is the first year of PARCC testing, for students enrolled in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and English 10. Additional information on PARCC testing can be found here.
The next round of PARCC testing will take place on April 23-24 for all students enrolled in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and English 10. Please note: there will be a special delayed opening schedule on April 23-24 to accommodate
testing. Only those students enrolled in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and English 10 need to report to school at the regular time for test administration. Remaining students not testing can report to school at 11:00 a.m. Please see scheduled below and at this link. AP and IB testing begin on May 4! Please note that the deadline for Advanced Placement (AP) exam registration has been extended until April 2 . Financial assistance is available to help families pay for the costs of taking AP exams, as the cost of AP exams should never be a reason for a student to not take an exam. All forms and the testing schedule can be found here. Taking the AP exam is an important college preparatory experience and a predictor of success in college and beyond, so we expect all students enrolled in AP courses take the exam. All students taking an AP exam will be participating in a pre-administration session on April 28 during the Village Time. At that time, students will be informed about details, times, and locations for testing, which begins on May 4.
AP/IB testing begins on May 4. The complete AP/IB testing schedule can be found here.
Attention Juniors! Don‘t forget to improve your test-taking skills for the SAT or ACT by prepping online
now with Kaplan test prep! Not only will completion of this online tool guarantee improved performance
on the SAT or ACT, but improving your score, you could be gaining access to thousands of dollars in college

Under “Kaplan’s Program Options and Pricing” select “SAT On Demand” or “ACT on Demand.” Once directed to the product page, click “Enroll Now.” On this page, “Your Cart,” you’ll see a box under “Order Summary.” Enter KAS2015SAT for SAT on Demand or KAS2015ACT for ACT On Demand. The ACT will be administered at Watkins Mill High School on April 18.
Attention Montgomery College Applicants: The ACCUPLACER Placement Test, normally administered at Montgomery College, will be administered here at Watkins Mill High School a g a i n this year. All seniors who applied and plan to go to Montgomery College for the fall semester must take this placement test. Watkins Mill High School will administer the test on April 2, students that applied by March 1st and are not currently enrolled in our ACES program will be notified regarding the testing time. Students who scored 550 and above on any portion of the SAT/24 and above on any part of the ACT are exempt from that portion of the ACCUPLACER Test. Please see Ms. Bodden or your counselor for additional information and questions.
Graduation on June 9 is about two months away! A few important reminders: - Financial obligations must be cleared in order to participate in all senior events,
including Prom and graduation. - Senior exams will be administered May 18-22. The last day for seniors is May 22. - There is a mandatory graduation rehearsal on June 8 at 12:00 p.m. followed by a senior

dignified, memorable ceremony are being emphasized. - Other items such as student dress, transportation to Constitution Hall, can be found in the senior
packet. - Charter bus transportation is available, also in the senior packet.
All of this information and more can be found in the Senior Packet, linked here.
Please visit the Senior Page on our website for copies of the senior packet, as well as additional details about senior events and graduation.
Also, for seniors: don‘t forget the many local scholarship opportunities available to our students. Many of the scholarships are made available by the generosity of our parent organizations, local elected officials, and business partners, including the PTSA and Booster Club; Senator Nancy King, the Montgomery Village Foundation, and more. Deadlines are fast approaching! Please see details about these scholarship opportunities and more here, or contact Ms. Prochnow in the Career Center for more information. SSL NEWS:
Student Service Learning (SSL) Tips
Give a Little Time…Make a Big Difference
March 2015
Students achieve curricular objectives.
MCPS recognizes exceptional service contributions of students through the Superintendent’s SSL Award which recognizes the accumulation of 75 hours of service during middle school, and the Certificate of Meritorious Service which documents 260 or more SSL hours by the year of high school graduation. All qualifying documentation for these MCPS SSL awards is due to the SSL coordinator by the April deadline. Due to spring break this school year, the deadline is March 26, 2015. Mr. Spears will be accepting documentation for Certificate of Meritorious Service for the Class of 2015. The deadline is April 17, 2015. All documentation needed to satisfy SSL graduation requirements for the Class 2015 is due by Friday, May 22, 2015 (Last Day for Seniors).
The majority of SSL occurs in the official, nonprofit, tax exempt sector. For-profit assisted living facilities and for-profit nursing homes are the only for-profit entities where SSL hours can be earned. Direct service to residents in these facilities requires approval of MCPS Form 560-50, Individual SSL Request in advance.
MCPS SSL approved faith-based organizations identify real need beyond their membership and assist students in using secular (non-religious) activities to address need in the greater community.
One SSL hour is awarded for every one hour of service outside of the instructional day. (A maximum of 8 hours may be awarded within a 24-hour period.)
Student Service Learning (SSL) Tips
Give a Little Time…Make a Big Difference
April 2015
Students gain necessary knowledge and skills.
Spring break begins April 3, 2015 ...make a plan now to serve and learn!
Meaningful SSL experiences can prompt students to redirect initial career paths toward more challenging and fulfilling opportunities.
Students involved in school-sponsored clubs and organizations that include a service learning project may earn SSL hours for their involvement in the supervised project in a public place outside of the instructional day.
Find answers to questions that are frequently asked regarding the SSL program by clicking on http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/ssl/pages/faq.aspx. It’s all there!
Plan now for a summer that includes service and learning. Choose organizations and opportunities that
have a graduation cap icon by them on the website www.mcpsssl.org OR get approval of MCPS Form 560-50 Individual SSL Request in advance of any service.
Stay well informed to Serve and Learn within the MCPS SSL guidelines. Know program details..and follow them!

Internationalism in action: IB Exam Destinations The IB students are all nearing the “finish line” of their IB Coursework with ALL CORE IB Assessments complete and nearly all Internal Assessments formally turned in and ready to send off to the examiners. Each

Attendance Procedures for AP/IB Exams
1. Reporting times and anticipated dismissal times for IB and AP exams are listed on the IB/AP Combined Testing Schedule.
2. Students who take an IB or an AP exam on any given day are excused from all regular classes here at Watkins Mill on that day. The attendance office will be notified of the excused absence(s) of students taking the exams. Students who are involved in an IB or an AP exam will be marked PRESENT for school records.
3. If a student becomes ill and cannot attend an exam s/he should call the WMHS attendance office to report the illness. Additionally, any student who becomes unable to attend a scheduled exam should contact the following individuals:
IB Exam: Call Mrs. Ingram at the IB Office by 7:10 AM. (301) 840-3975 (or) (540) 686-2771. Leave a message if nobody picks up the call. AP exam: Call the Ms. Walker by 7:10 AM (301) 461-9716. Leave a message if nobody picks up the call. 4. If students are in the building during instructional hours on a day for which they are scheduled for
an IB or an AP exam, they will be expected to attend classes and MAY NOT simply plan to spend the day in the Media Center studying, for example. Anyone planning to miss classes to prepare for an AM/PM exam must plan to do so off campus, and be assured of reliable transportation to and from the exam session, whether on or off campus.
5. Students should not ask to leave early if they finish before the end of the test, as their requests will
be denied. Students who play a sport or have a job, are responsible for informing coaches or employers of IB/AP obligations and making arrangements accordingly.
Exams may run longer than STEP; however, if that is the case a box lunch option will be available. Students need to let Mrs. Ingram or Mrs. Walker know first thing in the AM of their exam day if they wish to have a box lunch. Students may choose to bring a lunch as well on IB/AP exam days.

OPERATING BUDGET REQUEST FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR Stay Informed About the MCPS FY 2016 Operating Budget Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has released his recommended operating budget for next school year and is proposing a $31.9 million increase over this year’s budget. This is about $59.3 million less than the $2.39 billion operating budget the Board of Education had requested. The Montgomery County Council will hold public hearings on the County Executive’s budget recommendation on April 14, 15, and 16, and this is a chance for parents, staff, students, and community members to share their thoughts with county leaders about how our schools are funded. Information on registering to speak at a hearing and/or other ways to provide input to the council on the budget is available at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council/. A four-page document and overview video are available on the MCPS website that provide some quick facts and information about the budget that you can share with friends and family. Visit www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org and search “Operating Budget”.
