The Commodore’s Corner

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those men and women who died while serving in the

U.S. military. It also marks the unofficial start of Summer vacation.

What a fantastic start to Summer we had over this Memorial Day weekend. Starting with the un-

veiling of Jon Bergdall’s Eagle Scout project. An Eagle Scout is the highest achievement attain-

able in the Boy Scouts of America. With the completion Jon’s project he moves closer to being

one of the four percent of Boy Scouts that are granted the designation of “Eagle Scout.” Jon’s

project will be a beacon of light that welcome boaters to our channel entrance for years to come.

The All-American Cookout followed the unveiling. Thanks goes out to Kate and Beth for provid-

ing a fantastic traditional Memorial Day barbeque for more than 55 club members and guests.

With favorable winds and fair skies the weather was perfect for the 2017 SMBC Commodore’s

Cup & Catalina 22 Regatta. The 2017 SMBC Commodore Cup was won by George Schumacher,

David Regnet finished second, and Bruce Allen finished third. The Catalina 22 Regatta was won

by Rich Fox, Mark Breeden finished second, Bryan Retterbush finished third and Chuck Emrich

finished fourth. Bryan Retterbush did a fantastic job hosting the Catalina 22 Regatta and creating

the awards.

Monday was the annual Sail to Lunch. This year more than 25 club members met at Behm’s for

lunch.

What a wonderful weekend to kick off the unofficial start of Summer vacation. Thanks goes out

to everyone that helped to make this a memorable weekend.

"Fair Winds and Following Seas."

New SMBC Sign on Break Wall Built by Jon Bergdall

Jon started the conceptualization of this pro-

ject in August of 2016. He had to go through

an approval process, and got the last ap-

proval signature in December of 2016. In

January, Jon along with Doug’s help drew up

the concrete foundation plans, the concrete

block layout with the stone face and sign.

He contacted “Signs Are Us” in Fort Wayne,

Indiana and met with the owner to work out a

final design. By March, he picked up the

completed sign. Concrete was poured on

Good Friday. As Doug would drive the con-

crete buggy back and forth from the delivery

truck to the sign, Jon worked the concrete

around in the forms, working to get the air

out and keep it level. In the end 2 1/4 yards

were poured for a sturdy foundation. Then it

was the long hours of laying the block,

wrapping it in wire mesh, mudding and adding stone to the front. The St. Marys Boat Club sign fit like a glove in place

on May 23, 2017.

Jon learned how to organize the materials he needed and to preservere to complete the project. He noted in his Boy

Scout paperwork, “Leadership is difficult when you don’t know what you are doing. In that case, I can tell the person

what I need help with,

and they show me and

lead me. To become a

leader at new things, you

must first be led.” The

sign was dedicated to St.

Marys Boat Club on May

27, 2017. There was a

gathering of members

out on the break wall and

some rode on “Miss

Elsie”, SMBC’s pontoon

boat as Jon gave a

speech about how much

our club means to him.

We are like a second fam-

ily. With the channel

markers, club members

can find their way home.
