During the year 2012 I am going tohave a contest for those that
send methe most articles that can be used inthe monthly newsletter.
The articlesneed to be on some aspect of metaldetecting or treasure
hunting such astips on how to do something, tips ontechnique, new
equipment you havetried, personal experience, finds thatyou think
are pretty cool, commentsabout something relating to thesubject. I
will keep tabs on who sentwhat and at the end of the year a
prizewill be given to the top three donorsthat participated. The

On Wednesday Nov. 28th Terry Humphries,Cody Reese and I , Bill
Watkins, went on ascouting hunt with the idea of obtaining anouting
to a coal mining town in SoutheastOklahoma.We actually did get
permission to hunt on twodifferent places. Having seen these places
itwill be a good outing. On one of the placesthe grass is very
short and has been cleared.The other place the grass isn’t very
high andshould be a good place to hunt also.We have scheduled this
to happen onSaturday December 15th.

THREE SANDS OUTING
We had fair weather for the day, a little breezy. This was
probablythe driest soil conditions of all the dry outings to
ThreeSands. There were 23 ITTHC members in attendance.
Here is some feedback I received back on the Three Sands
outing.
Finds:
Tim Adams: Ford Model T key, 1913-1914 Chevrolet

tokens, and lots of assorted junk.

GPS LOCATIONS

How many times have you been out hunting and found a site you
want toremember and revisit. Taking a GPS with you makes the return
visit to a locationsimple. If you don't have one get one. The
investment is well worth it.
The day may come when you hit a hot spot, find a few really neat
items and wantto remember the exact location. Locking in the spot
and labeling it on your GPSmakes the return easy.
I forget easily. My GPS has been a life

“SHOWS LIKE THIS WILL HAVE US OUTLAWED!”BY BRUCE MARTIN
Yes I am mad, mad as a Pit Bull that has had his food bowl taken
away! There is anew reality tv show called “American Diggers” and
it airs on the Spike network.This is a supposed relic recovery
company owned by a former, so called“Professional Wrestler” named
Ric Savage and he calls his company “AmericanSavage Relic Recovery
Company” These are the most obnoxious and arrogantexamples of relic
raiders I have seen. To say the least the way Ric approacheshome
and property owners would scare the hell out of most people. The
man isloud and crude. He bangs on people’s doors and sticks his
overly large head andego in their faces. Once they are snapped back
to reality and realize that this manis not going to attack them
they are approached with a business deal that involveshis people
ravaging their land with picks, shovels and back hoes. His offer
theninvolves his company keeping 80% of all profits of artifact
sales and the landowner gets the remaining 20%. In fact people
actually settle for 20%??? To tellyou the truth, which is something
I am sure this show does not, I don’t think theyget permission the
way they show you on TV. I am pretty sure there is a lot ofbehind
the scenes payoffs. Also it seems like every show they find
complete relics,pots of coins and items that show very little
deterioration from years of beingburied. An example of this would
be while detecting in the bayou of Louisianathey supposedly found a
pirate age short saber with a iron blade in nearly
completecondition. Well in my 32 years of treasure hunting I have
yet to find any iron itemthat was as good a shape as that sword.
Not to mention that the swamp wascompletely wet and most likely
full of salt since this was a tidal marsh area. I willgive you an
example, next year when it snows and you drive your new car with
allthe rust inhibitors in and on the metal, drive through the slush
that was created byusing salt on the roads. Now don’t wash your car
for 6 months not to mention 200years and then crawl under it to see
if you have any rust. I would be willing to betmy pay check that
you will have more rust and corrosion than you could imagine.Are
you starting to see my point? This same marsh site also turned up a
old milkcreamer can that was full of coins including silver dollars
and a supposed rare gold

american eagle. Now this can was made of iron and had to have
the lid pried off.Seems to me that the salt and moisture would of
rusted the can in a matter of a fewyears. The so called “Relic
Hunters” stated that this was probably moved there bythe Katrina
hurricane but if you ask me it was moved there by a blow hard
namedRic Savage. I watch this show just to see what this company is
doing to tarnish orshould I say rust the image of those who abide
by the rules. It really disgusts meand the namesake of the show
makes me want to puke. Their idea of relic recoverystarts with the
morons slamming army shovels set up in pick fashion into
thedetected site with no thought to the damage that could be done
to the item. I haveseen the show numerous times and fear that
people would think this is how all ofus enthusiasts act. According
to their website which can be found by searching “American Digger”
these are the 3 important things to do before searching a site( in
order) research, get equipment, study the laws and get permission.
There is notone mention of ethics, filling holes or just plain
courtesy. This show’s premise isrecovery of items for profit and no
other reason. Actually the show’s real purposeis to boost the ego
of a once been fat wrestler who has no other way of
beingproductive. It is true that he probably makes plenty of money
with his theatricsand that legitimate relic hunting shows never
appeal to the masses without theoutlandish effects that are faked
on this show. Every time they bring out a relic ofany value the
host Ric Savage screams “Boom Baby take that!” to any city ortown
where they are filming. Then he always values the item with his
over inflatedvalues. Speaking of values I don’t think his parents
ever taught those to him. Itamazes me that people will believe this
side show freak and his selling of snakeoil. I have seen these guys
use backhoes to recover artifacts. Not only do they useback hoes
but the commercial shows them walking away from a explosion and
afireball. Come on now this is ridiculous. I said they used a
backhoe but as far as Icould tell they were just digging a hole
wildly. They are not experiencedequipment operators just dirt
butchers. I could go on with this but should quitbefore my blood
pressure boils over. I ask that you look up this show and watch
itfor yourselves. If you are like me then you will be writing the
“Spike Network”and expressing your feelings about the way this show
represents all of us whoenjoy this hobby. As time goes on it is
harder and harder to find places that willallow us to enjoy this
hobby and shows like this will have us going the way of thedinosaur
and we will be the long lost relics of days gone by.

Hollowed Out Old Treessubmitted by Lee Wierzchowski
A treasure hunting acquaintance of mine was metal detecting an
old homestead inPennsylvania. The home had been unlived in for many
years.
He was working the back of the property in a thick area
populated with old elm and mapletrees. One of the old trees that he
was near had a large hollowed hole in the center of the trunk,about
four feet from the ground. This fellow happened to notice a piece
of burlap bag hangingfrom inside the hollowed out area. Being
inquisitive, as most good treasure hunters are, hewalked over to
investigate further.
Inside the hollowed tree trunk was a rotted, old, burlap
bag.
Inside the bag were old coins dating between 1832 and 1877.
Also inside the hole were the remains of a nest that apparently
had been lived in by an animal.
It never ceases to amaze me where people hide money.

A TREASURE STORYsubmitted by Lee Wierzchowski
It was in West Virginia on a dark and stormy night in 1950, a
pair of raccoon hunters seekingshelter from a thunderstorm
accidentally
discovered a small cave near the mouth of what would ever after
be called Rich Creek inWayne County. While one of the hunters took
a nap, the other took a lantern and wentexploring. At the back of
the cave he found a skeleton and two saddle bags filled with
silverdollars. Not being disposed to share his find with his
slug-abed partner, the hunter slipped afew dollars in his pocket
and left the rest for another day. As it turned out, the next day
seemedto be as good as any, and the selfish hunter tried to return
to the cave alone; but the landmarkslooked different in day light,
and he couldn’t find the entrance. Later he showed the
silverdollars around and told the story to his friends. Somebody
remembered that a
pair of bandits had taken two saddlebags of silver dollars from
the bank in Ferguson in 1895,and disappeared while being chased by
a posse.
A search party was formed but neither they nor subsequent
searchers could relocate the cave.
