Throughout Jewish tradition, we have always

held women of valor in the highest regard. They

are leaders, strong in heart and in mind. Without

them, our people would have fallen long ago.

These women are not just in the Torah scrolls; they

among us in the community, working tirelessly to

bring hope to those in need and strengthening

our people. Susan Bender is one of these valorous

women.

As a Jewish professional, Susan has epitomized

the concept of tikkun olam, healing the world, to

both Sid Jacobson JCC and the North Shore of Long

Island. Consider what the JCC would have been like

had Susan never stepped foot over the threshold.

We would never have seen the rise of such

innovative Alzheimer’s and dementia programs

like the Friendship Circle or Let’s Do Lunch™.

We would not have the programs to offer to

children with autism and other special needs.

We would not have

the firm relationships

and friendships with

the Jewish community,

whether it be through

synagogues or UJA-

Federation of NY. Our

building would have been

30,000 acres smaller and

Bernice Jacobson Day School & Camp would have

been only a dream.

Susan Bender, like the original eshet chayil, is “a

woman of valor... her value is far beyond pearls.”

I join the Board of Directors, the JCC staff and the

entire community in wishing her good luck in her

future endeavors. Whatever her plans, she can

be sure that she leaves behind a legacy that will

continue to affect us all for years to come.

Message From the Executive Director . . .“TO EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON AND A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE UNDER HEAVEN” Ecclesiastes 3:1

After eighteen years at the helm of Sid Jacobson

JCC, I am proud to look back on the enormous

change and growth that the years have brought.

The amazing growth of Sid Jacobson JCC, from its

earliest nomadic days to the construction of our

East Hills campus in 1988 to its expansion in 2001

to the addition of Bernice Jacobson Day School &

Camp in 2008, is a testament to the partnership

and vision that have become so integral to JCC life.

Sid Jacobson JCC has grown to become a leader

in the Jewish and general community through

the dedication of talented lay leaders and gifted

professional staff. It has been an honor and a

privilege to have worked with and learned from

them.

The JCC has become a leader in the provision of

services to the most vulnerable among us. We’ve

forged partnerships with area synagogues to build

a caring, compassionate and welcoming Jewish

community accessible to all. Tikkun Olam has

resonated as a theme throughout every department

of the JCC, including teens mentoring special

needs children or at-risk youth, preschoolers

learning to care for the

environment, social

workers offering respite

to caregivers, synagogues

working with the JCC to

feed the homeless or

teens traveling to work in

devastated areas of our

country.

Looking to the future, Bernice Jacobson Day School

& Camp will allow us to build premiere Jewish

day camping to rival the finest in the day camp

industry, while being inclusive of the diversity

of needs in our community. Quality Jewish day

care will allow us to raise future generations in a

nurturing environment and a beautiful lush setting.

As I take my leave, one of my greatest rewards in

the coming years will be seeing Sid Jacobson JCC

and Bernice Jacobson Day School & Camp grow

to accomplish even greater success in this new

chapter in their history. I will always cherish these

wonderful years as the highlight of an almost forty-

year career in JCCs, and I am grateful to all of you

for having allowed me this opportunity.

The premiere fundraising event on Long

Island, the Auction connects donors,

sponsors and participants with a common

goal of providing a better life for people

in their community. With these funds, Sid

Jacobson JCC has become the backbone

for the North Shore, providing crucial

programming for frail elderly suffering from

dementia, families dealing with a loved

one’s Young Onset Alzheimer’s and children

living with the isolating effects of autism.

Kenia Nunez and her son Marken are two

of the thousands of people that have been

helped by Auction-funded programming.

Marken, an intelligent and friendly nine

year old, has Asperger’s, a mild form of

autism. Despite his best efforts, he is

bullied physically and emotionally by

his classmates. In her speech to Auction

guests, Kenia described how the school

district was powerless to stop the abuse,

leaving her son on his own to deal with his

internal and external scars.

Then they discovered Sid Jacobson JCC’s

Special Need Center. Now Marken spends

his summers at Camp Kehilla, the JCC’s day

camp at Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds

for children with special needs, and the

rest of the year participating in the Kehilla

Saturdays program. “Each day that Marken

is in a program at Sid Jacobson JCC, I see a

renewed strength in him. I know that after a

weekend of spending time with his buddies

and adults who care about him, he will be

able to go back to school with his head held

high.”

Sid Jacobson JCC would like to thank the

Auction Committee, donors, sponsors,

volunteers and attendees for raising

over $600,000 for children like Marken.

Every dollar will go towards building the

confidence of an autistic child, providing a

safe and enriching day program for adults

with Young Onset Alzheimer’s and allowing

the frail elderly the dignity that they

deserve. For more information on how you

can support these vital programs, visit us

online at www.sjjcc.org.

Fay J. Lindner Foundation has

always been a friend of the JCC,

supporting programs for seniors,

as well as those diagnosed

with Young Onset Alzheimer’s

disease.

“The Foundation is proud to lend its support to Sid Jacobson

Jewish Community Center,” Robert Goldberg, president of

The Fay J. Lindner Foundation said.

The Fay J. Lindner Foundation Senior Services Center

continues to provide the very best in programming for both

well and frail elderly. Active seniors take full advantage of the

many offered trips, cultural arts experiences and lectures,

while those with functional or memory impairment brought

upon by stroke, aging, Alzheimer’s disease or related issues

participate in the Friendship Circle day program. The Fay J.

Lindner Senior Services Center also boasts Let’s Do Lunch™,

a first-of-its-kind program for those in their 30s, 40s and 50s

suffering from Young Onset Alzheimer’s disease.

26th Annual Golf & Tennis Outing Honoree AnnouncedOn August 1, tennis players and golf foursomes will fill the

courts and greens of Old Westbury Golf & Country Club

for Sid Jacobson JCC’s 26th Annual Golf & Tennis Outing.

Raising money for the valuable social programs at the JCC,

the Golf & Tennis Outing is a vital—and fun—fundraising

event for the whole community. This year, the Outing will be

honoring Martin Rosenman, with a special recognition for

David Nussbaum.

Sid Jacobson JCC’s Golf & Tennis Outings has been

responsible for raising over $4 million in the past 25 years. These funds have directly

benefited programs that the community desperately needs, including Camp Kehilla,

a summer camp for children on the autism spectrum, and the Friendship Circle, a day

program for the frail elderly affected with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Last year’s

event gave participants the opportunity to take a personal interest in these populations,

allowing people to purchase scholarships for those in the Friendship Circle and children at

Camp Kehilla.

Honoree Martin Rosenman has been a friend to the JCC since its inception. Having spent

years dedicated to Jewish charitable endeavors, his experience has helped the agency

expand to provide the programming vital to our members and community. David Nussbaum

has been a critical part of the Golf & Tennis Outing, guaranteeing its continuing existence

for the last 25 years. He will be receiving the “Keter Award” (Person of Distinction)

in recognition of his tireless work within the JCC since its earliest days and the JCC’s

expression of gratitude.

Alzheimer’s Disease. She also was integral in establishing the Special Needs Center, which brought children with autism and other special needs together with seasoned professionals to develop social skills and lasting friendships. Susan’s legacy has been one of growth, beginning with the 2001 expansion of the Sid Jacobson JCC building and continuing with the purchase of Bernice Jacobson Day School & Camp in 2008. Her efforts are the foundation for the JCC’s continued program growth, bringing its services to the greater Long Island community. The Board of Directors, Epicurean Committee, the JCC staff and the entire community thank Susan Bender for her commitment to tikkun olam and her dedication to improving the lives of Long Islanders and building Jewish community.

5th Annual 5K Run/Walk and Children’s Fun RunRunners from all over Long Island have already

signed up for the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk and

Children’s Fun Run, to be held on Sunday, June

5 in front of Sid Jacobson JCC. Among them are

members of the JCC’s first ever special needs

track team and participants in Strength to

Strength, Partners in Caring’s free adult cancer

wellness program. Their courage is the source

of the event’s motto, “Building Strength for

all,” and the reason that hundreds of runners

come out to compete every year.

The JCC is dedicated to providing wellness

programs for special needs children and

cancer survivors in the community.

Through funds from the 5k Run/Walk, the JCC has been able to help maintain

Strength to Strength, which utilizes a group setting to achieve both mental

and physical health for those recovering from cancer treatment or actively

undergoing treatment. With the help of a

professional social worker and a certified exercise

instructor, participants get individualize attention

to help them feel better during treatment and

recover more quickly once treatment is over. The

Special Needs Center is also devoted to individual

wellness, providing unique and exciting programs

to help special needs children to become healthy

in body and mind. Some of these services include

an adaptive aerobics class, personal training and

Shooting Stars, a program that teams up special

needs children with their typical peers to learn

basketball skills.

Many of these programs can’t survive without the generosity of 5K Run/Walk

and Children’s Fun Run participants.

Tony Ciofalo, Debbi Buslik, Leslie Aiuto and Sha James rocked the boat during their starring turns in Sid Jacobson JCC’s production of “Guys and Dolls.” The JCC’s Theatre Department puts on a variety of shows for all ages.

TANS 2nd Annual Campaign Against Hunger volunteers man the food distribution tables in January. The event, which involved different communities throughout Nassau County, served thousands of homeless with food collected from synagogues and JCCs. Tikkun Alliance of North Shore is a collaborative community effort of 11 synagogues, 2 JCCs and UJA-Federation of New York formed to address issues affecting the world today.

Teens participated in the Gulf Coast Vacation Program in February. Participants travelled along the coast, lending assistance to the oil spill clean up and New Orlean’s post-Katrina restoration.

Staff at Sid Jacobson JCC dress in pink to honor National Breast Cancer Month. In effort to provide the best care possible for those in the community living with or recovering from cancer, the JCC offers Strength to Strength, an adult wellness program geared towards the specific needs of individuals recovering from cancer treatment or actively engaged in a treatment regimen.

Sid Jacobson JCC’s Danielle Slade, Assistant Director of SOURCE and RAVE Services, and Susan Bender, Executive Director, display a painting from one of the many artists at the March 10 Art Angels at Clearvision Optical. During a reception and wine and cheese tasting, attendees bid on artwork created by special needs children, with all proceeds benefiting the special needs programs at the JCC.

Temple Israel donated mishloach manot (Purim baskets) to participants of the Friendship Circle, the JCC’s Alzheimer’s Day Program, bringing the joy of Purim into their lives. Sid Jacobson JCC also got into the Purim spirit with great programs, including a Purim character breakfast and a Purim basket sale.

Camp Jacobson at Robin Hood Begins Third SummerThe staff of Bernice Jacobson Day School & Camp is excited to begin the third season of Camp Jacobson at Robin Hood.

In order to keep up with demand, the camp continues to improve facilities to provide new and exciting activities for campers.

This year, the Arts Pavilion has undergone renovation, allowing more children the opportunity to learn skills in jewelry making, pottery and wood-working.

The Junior Sports Fields have also been updated so that the youngest campers can participate in athletics on smaller, more age-appropriate fields.

As always, Camp Jacobson offers 15 acres of fun, including three basketball courts, three heated

swimming pools, a Go Kart track and other staples of the Jewish camping experience.

Bernice Jacobson Day School & Camp has also become a popular site for year-round activities, including birthday parties, after-school programs, family and special events.

Starting in Fall 2011, it will also be the home of the brand new infant and toddler day care program and early childhood classes and programs.

The Luncheon also

supports the Let’s

Do Lunch program, a first-of-its-kind day program in the nation for

individuals in their 30s, 40s and 50s with Young Onset Alzheimer’s

disease and other related dementias. Let’s Do Lunch provides that

care for individuals suffering from this condition, as well as respite

for their families.

Along with honoring those who bring light to those suffering in the

dark, the Friendship Circle Luncheon also showcased a fashion show

presented by Americana Manhasset, featuring fashions by Michael
