January 2015
.
‘Tis the Season. I have been scurrying around in search of the optimal gift, the newest and coolest lights to put on the house (need to add “Best Holiday Lights in Newport Shores” to my LinkedIn), and attending holiday parties. Unfortunately, nonstop fun and frenzy can create feelings of anxiety, stress, and exhaustion which may lead to disagreements with the ones you care most about. It can be easy to lose sight of what’s really important. By taking a few moments to relax and remember that the spirit of the holidays is to give thanks to friends and family, contemplate the year past, and start planning for the future. We have a lot to be thankful for in our Newport Shores community, from the friends we make, to the parties at the clubhouse, activities and events for kids, and the beauty of Lake Washington. Looking forward, the Newport Shores Board is having its annual retreat in early January. This is the yearly opportunity to reflect and plan for the future of our community. Additionally, this year marks the first in many that we can start to look beyond the financial commitments associated with the clubhouse and dredge. Suggestions for community betterment are welcome and can be sent to me ([email protected]; or [email protected]).
Happy Holidays!

First, a big thanks to a few more people letting me know about families who have lived in more than one house in Newport Shores - thanks to Mr. D. and Mrs. G. for that info. I’ll compile that list for this column very soon!
And to Mrs. A, Mr. S., and Mr. T. for letting me know they read and enjoy my column. That makes me feel good all over!
A big congratulations to Larry Cochrane (Cascade Key) and his daughter, Heather, on running and finishing the Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon. Oh, to be young and have good legs!
Bill Price (Lummi) has published his 2nd book called Your Customer Rules! Delivering the Me2B Experiences That Today's Customers Demand. With his Melbourne, Australia-based co-author, Bill researched 12 global leaders recognized for great customer experience (Amazon, Apple, Hyatt, vente-privee, Yamato Transport, and others), producing a set of 7 “customer needs” and 40 “sub-needs” including “You know me, you re-member me” and “You surprise me with stuff that I can’t imagine”. Each of these needs and sub-needs ap-plies to employee experience, as well. His 1st book is The Best Service is No Service: How to Liberate Your Customers From Customer Service, Keep Them Happy, and Control Costs, based partly on his experience as Amazon’s 1st Global VP of Customer Service. Sounds technical and probably not a good read for the local book club, but a great read for our Newport Shores business owners!!
Another author in the neighborhood is Vice Commodore Ward Harris (Skagit). He’s not ready to say much about it yet, but I’ll sneak the title to you: “God’s Army, 1096 anno dominie”. Sounds historic!
This just in – Seattle Sounder (goalie) Marcus Hahnemann (Skagit) has announced his retirement. No, I do not know what he’ll be doing with all his free time. Ask him. He’s the tall guy who walks a black dog!
Another neighborhood “celebrity” story - Wendy Cole (Crescent), Lynette Jones (Lummi) and Linda Kosin (Columbia) were just featured in the new Rodan + Fields Product launch for January. (R+F is a skin care prod-uct company.) “The video taping took most of one day on December 16th...hair, make-up, stylist!!! It's a take!”, added Wendy.
Did you know that Newport Shores is nearly 50 years old? And, some families have been here since the be-ginning. There is history in this neighborhood, but only a small History Committee – Dick Haelsig and me! We’d love to research and write down a lot of this history but we are only two people. Want to help? We’d especially love to have some of the “old timers” help us. How about it? Contact Dick or me. (Operators are standing by, as they say!)
That’s it for now….have a healthy and happy 2015!
KOMO-TV News interviewed a handful of Newport Shores boys playing in the snow at Snoqualmie Pass on the Saturday after Christmas. Cool, literally and figuratively!

Remember… It takes VOLUNTEERS to make it happen here at New-port Shores! Thank you to all of you who step up and make this is
such a great community to live in!
What a great Holiday season! Thanks to Jen Faley and crew for decorating the club. Christmas Ships were great as usual; a big thank you to Tiffany English and all the volunteers who helped arrange the fun evening. The Holiday Brunch was also a big success, thank you Corinne Watson for planning this fun filled event.
Due to low RSVP numbers the Kids Holiday Party was cancelled in lieu of Milk and Cookies with Santa which was a great success. Thank you Jen Faley for taking the time to plan and man the event.
We would appreciate the community feedback to help us determine interest, or suggestions as to how to get the word out about the events and what changes could be made to increase interest and involvement.
On that note…. There will be Social Committee Kick Off gathering at the clubhouse soon. All club members are welcome to join us and discuss the long-standing traditional clubhouse events and bring new ideas for new events!! We encourage anyone interested in the neighborhood’s social events to come and join the Social Committee and find out how you can help out! This is also a great time to give specific feedback on events like the Kids Holiday Party.
*** Please HELP! We need a small group of volunteers to lead next year’s 4th of July celebration. It is an already, well planned event that needs a few dedicated leaders to help delegate and organize. The groundwork has been laid, and the day always pulls of with great success. It just takes a couple leaders to ensure everyone is on track! We may have to take alternative actions to plan the event, which could impact the cost of the event going forward if no volunteers step up to lead. Please let us know if you have questions or are interested in leading this event with one or two other event leaders! ****

Entrance Holiday Flower Lights
If you've enjoyed the "FLOWER LIGHTS" at the entry way please help us add to our 2015 "Newport Garden of Lights" In 2011 we received donations from the neighborhood to purchase the Commercial Grade LED lights. We did 2 work parties, having many volunteers from the neighborhood help us construct our flowers.
We're thinking ahead this year and asking once again for donations. Keep in mind that each flower uses at least 150 lights, so the cost of each flower is at least $50.00.
Any donation amount is welcome. Donations can be directed to the clubhouse.

Ploy used by Burglars ...
They leave some trash item in front of a house or in the front yard... pizza box, milk jug, etc. If someone is home, they would pick it up. If not, it is a sign that someone is not home. So if someone is out walking and comes across some random trash , kindly pick it up and help protect the neighborhood (and keep it pretty).
Beware of People Bearing Gifts!
WARNING: Be wary of accepting any "surprise gift or package", which you neither expected nor personally ordered.
Phone scam going around from people claiming to be couriers and wanting to deliver a package, they bring the package then claim because it is alcohol you need to pay a surcharge. They ask for your credit card. It ends up being a very expensive bottle of wine for you. The "mobile credit card machine" which the delivery man carried now has all the info necessary to create a "dummy" card with all your card details.
The only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information is when you yourself initiated the purchase or transaction!
Dark Mornings and Early Evenings Bring Danger
In the dark days of winter there are many potential dangers to neighbors
in cars and pedestrians too! SLOW DOWN. All the cars parked at the en-
trance for picking up kids at the bus are also causing a jam up and some
of the parked cars are not easily visible at the blind corners.
