Every summer, Newport Gulls Baseball conducts several Youth Summer Camps at locations around Aquidneck Island. These camps are designed for young baseball players between the ages of 6 and 12. Our summer camps have become very popular, averaging almost 100 participants per session. Many of our campers come from out-of -state for the opportunity to attend a Gulls camp.
The camps are run by the Newport Gulls coaching staff and players, and are designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball, specific to the age group and/or skill level involved. After hours of skill-specific drills and instruction, camp participants take part in contests and live game play to show off their skills, with chances to win awards for different competitions.
Our 3rd Annual Mark Weed Memorial Camp will be held at Newport’s Goldberg Field in Mark’s honor from July 9th to July 12th. The camp was named in honor of Mark, who was an avid supporter of youth athletics on Aquidneck Island. At his request, a foundation was set up to send children from the island to our summer camps free of charge. All participants of the Mark Weed Memorial Camp will attend the Gulls game scheduled in his name on July 25, 2012 for a pre-game ceremony in his memory.
The cost of the camp is $85, which includes instruction, a Gulls T-shirt, and Gulls game ticket. Camps take place four days per week, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. A small price to pay to learn the game from the “Major League Stars of Tomorrow”. Registra-tion forms can be found in the ticket office, or on our website at www.newportgulls.com.

MISSION STATEMENT: “Goals of the Gulls”
Since moving to Cardines Field in 2001 the Newport Gulls have brought a new level of excitement to Newport County, beginning with winning an unprecedented four Fay Vincent
Jr. Cups as champions of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
The Newport Gulls have goals that go beyond the field itself. Our mission is to provide a level of community involvement and family entertainment to children and adults alike, that is second to none in New England. It is because of our players, coaches and fans that we have
been able to do just that.
Being a non-profit organization, none of this is possible without the many volunteers, staff, host families and businesses in our communities that support us.
Thank you for being such a valuable member of the NEWPORT GULLS BASEBALL FAMILY!

June 2012
Dear Newport Gulls Fans,
As the Gulls approach our 12th season in the City by the Sea, we enter our second de-cade of operation with the same determination to be the best summer college baseball organization in the country.
Annually it is our goal to put the most competitive team on the field in pursuit of the Fay Vincent Cup; the NECBL league championship. Last season our club finished first during the regular season with a league-best record of 29-13. Although we fell short of our goal of the league championship, it does not take away from the team’s success and memories we made with our players. The Gulls have won more games and NECBL championships than any other team over the last 11 years, something we are very proud of.
The Gulls have had more than 160 players go on to play professional baseball. At the start of spring training this year, we had four Gulls on Major League rosters. Additionally in January we inducted three former Gulls into our Hall of Fame; Jim Murphy (2006), Chris Stanton (2004), and Rusty Begnaud (2002) as well as our good friend Rick McGowan who retired from the Newport Daily News after 35 years of service.
Our attendance in 2011 was second in the NECBL and ranked 6th in the country for sum-mer college baseball, very impressive considering there are hundreds of summer college baseball teams all over the country. We are grateful to have the best fan base that support and are passionate about their home team.
None of this could be possible with all of the generous and gracious support from our sponsors, host families, volunteers, interns, staff, players, coaches, friends, fans and the City of Newport. It is our goal to better what we have accomplished in our first 11 years, as we continue to “Raise the Bar in Summer Collegiate Baseball.”
We have something special here that belongs to all of you! Thank you for your continued loyalty and support of the best summer college baseball team in America.
Sincerely,
Chuck PaivaPresident & General ManagerNewport Gulls

Cardines Field: a piece of baseball history since 1908
Cardines Field, the home of the Newport Gulls has a r ich histor y involving the great American pas-time. The parcel of land on
which Cardines sits, formerly known as “The Ba-sin”, had been used in the 1800’s as a source of water for the steam locomotives until the area residents complained about the stagnant water.
In 1908, a small group of New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad employees cleared enough away for a diamond to play host to a six-team league. In 1919, the railroad granted permission to the oldest established amateur league in the United States, known as the George S. Donnelly Sunset League which still plays today - 93 seasons later.
Between 1925 and 1936, the City of Newport leased the field for $1 per year. Small wooden bleachers and a backstop were added since no permanent improvements could be made to the privately owned parcel of land. In 1936, the City of Newport purchased the field and quickly made it one of the finest fields in America. Cardines is a cousin of other notable fields of that era, Ebbetts, Fenway and Wrigley all boasted a stone facade and wooden bleach-ers with unique outfield angles that made players famous in their ability to play the caroms.
By the 1980’s, Cardines Field was in danger of being torn down to make room for a park-ing lot to support the successful tourist industry in Newport. A local group led by Ron MacDonald, raised the funds necessary to repair the aging facility and made significant improvements to the field. Due to the efforts of Mr. MacDonald, the City of Newport passed a resolution that will keep Cardines Field as an historic landmark in Newport history.
Today, the “Friends of Cardines Foundation” with support from the Aletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust and the City of Newport work hard each year to improve the historic land-mark, which, in 2001 saw the addition of a new lighting system. The Newport Gulls contributed with a modern new concession stand and in the past two years the parks and recreation department completed the renovation of the bathroom, bleachers and locker room facilities.
Over the years many baseball legends have graced Cardines Field, including Jimmy Foxx,
7
Larry Doby, Lou Gorman and Satchel Paige who sat in a rocking chair between the hockey style dugouts thinking up new names for his many pitches. Folklore has it that Babe Ruth once toed the batters box and rubber here at Cardines.... One thing is for sure though, the Newport Gulls have revived the treasure, leading the NECBL in attendance for the third straight year averaging an unprecedented
50,000 fans per season and contributing to Cardines being named among the top five places to play in Summer College Baseball by Baseball America magazine. Since 2001 the Gulls relocated from Cranston, RI to Cardines Field in Newport, and has become the home of the Newport Gulls and the premier host city in all of summer college base-ball. 10 Years of Gulls success, the baseball tradition grows at historic Cardines Field...

Letter from the Commissioner
To the Fans, Host Families and Volunteers of the Best in Summer Baseball
It’s that time of the year again, another great summer of baseball. The New England Collegiate Baseball League will again bring you the best collegiate players in the country following their dream. I hope you are ready for a summer full of exciting family-oriented entertainment.
2012 will mark the 19th anniversary of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Nineteen years watching some of the best collegiate prospects in the country playing in your community. What a great way to spend a warm summer night, sitting back and watching top amateur athletes playing for nothing more than their love of the game and the opportunity and hope to make the “Big Show.” Players like Stephen Strasburg, the #1 draft selection in 2009 and now the ace of the Washington Nationals. Joe Nathan and Andrew Bailey, closers for the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox. Andre Ethier of the Dodgers and Chris Iannetta of the Angels, both members of the NECBL Hall of Fame.
The 2011 season was highlighted by Team NECBL playing our national Team USA, at historic Fenway Park in Boston…. Oh, did I mention we won 3 to 2… The league playoffs—exciting great baseball with the Keene Swamp Bats winning the league championship and the Fay Vincent Sr. Trophy for the third time.
In 2012, the NECBL will have ten teams within the six New England States, playing in picturesque ballparks. The East Division will include: Laconia Muskrats, Mystic Schooners, New Bedford Bay Sox, Newport Gulls, Sanford Mainers. The West Division: Danbury Westerners, Holyoke Blue Sox, Keene Swamp Bats, North Adams SteeepleCats, Vermont Mountaineers. Our annual showcase event, The NECBL All-Star Game, will be held on July 22, 2012 at Montpelier Recreation Field in beautiful Montpe-lier, Vermont. So please mark your calendar and join us for this great event.
The NECBL will again broadcast all regular season and playoff games over the internet, so if you can’t make a game in person, follow your favorite team on the NECBL Broadcast Network. Stay up-to-date on the latest standings and statistics by visiting our website at www.necbl.com.
The 501(c)(3) non-profit New England Collegiate Baseball League continues to achieve worldwide recognition for the quality of baseball played, as well as the organizational professionalism of its teams. The enthusiasm of the fans, the hospitality of the host families and dedication of the volunteers are second to none. We could not be and would not be the best summer baseball league in the country without you folks. On behalf of our outstanding collegiate athletes and the NECBL, I would like to thank you for your continued support, dedication and loyalty. I hope to see you at the ballpark and always, “Keep Your Eye on the Dream.”
Best Wishes and Safe Travel,Mario TianiCommissioner

Mike Coombs returns for his eighth season at the helm of
the Newport Gulls since taking over as field manager in 2005.
Coombs owns a career regular-season record of 195-97 and
has guided the Gulls to a pair of NECBL titles during his tenure.
Last season, Coombs led the Gulls to 29-13 record, the best in
the NECBL, during the regular season and their fourth straight
Eastern Division title before the Gulls were defeated by the
Laconia Muskrats in the first round of the NECBL playoffs.
In 2010, Coombs guided the Gulls to a 27-15 record and their
fourth straight division crown during the regular season. The
Gulls swept the Muskrats in the first round of the playoffs
before losing to eventual the NECBL Champion North Shore
Navigators in the Eastern Division Championship Series.
In 2009, the Gulls won their fourth NECBL title, defeating the Vermont Mountaineers in three games. For
his exceptional summer, Coombs was named the Manager of Team NECBL for the league’s exhibition
contest versus Team USA. Coombs was also named the Manager of the Eastern Division All-Star team
and was named the 2009 NECBL Coach of the Year.
In 2008, Coombs was named the manager of the Southern Division All-Star Team for the second time in
four seasons, as the Gulls finished 26-16 during the regular season before losing to the Sanford Mainers
in the NECBL Championship Series.
In 2007, Coombs led the Gulls to the 25-win plateau during the regular season once again (25-17), but
Newport fell to the Vermont Mountaineers in the NECBL Championship Series.
In 2006, Coombs steered the Gulls to a team-high 32-10 overall record during the regular season
andwas named the 2006 NECBL Coach of the Year. Coombs also managed the 2006 Southern Division
All-Star Team.
Coombs led the Gulls to a 26-16 record during the regular season and then on to the team’s third
NECBL Championship during his first season at the helm – which began as an assistant coach – in 2005.
The ever-colorful Coach Coombs has an extensive background in baseball, playing as a catcher
and outfielder for Seminole Community College, in the Shenandoah Valley Collegiate League and
professionally for the Detroit Tiger organization. He has coached at the high school, collegiate and
professional levels, including as a pitching coach with the University of South Florida and the Milwaukee
Brewers organization.

Al Leyva returns for his second season with the Newport Gulls as the team’s hitting coach and third
base coach. Leyva has six years of experience in the NECBL as a manager and assistant coach with three
different organizations. Currently, Leyva is in his fourth season as the head coach at Damien High School
in California.
After coaching stints at the high school and college level, Leyva began his NECBL coaching career as
the field manager of the Middletown Giants in 2003, leading them to the playoffs in his first season at
the helm. In 2004 and 2005, Leyva served as an assistant coach with the Manchester Silkworms, making
playoff appearances in both seasons.
In 2006, Leyva made his professional coaching debut with the Chicago White Sox rookie ball team in
Bristol, Tennessee. Leyva served as an assistant coach to his brother Nick Leyva, who is currently a third
base coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In 2007, Leyva returned to the NECBL as the field manager of the North Adams SteepleCats, leading
them into the playoffs where they were swept by the Newport Gulls.

Prior to joining the Gulls, Long served as the
pitching coach of the Wareham Gatemen
of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2009.

Gail and Lisa learned the business early
growing up in the store that their parents opened in1961. From
the beginning they concentrated on giving their customers the best
brands, selection, service and price. As adults, raising their own
families, they've learned first hand what appliances work best. They
bring that knowledge to the store every day, along with a 50 year
tradition that combines quality, value and personal service that you won't
find anywhere else. So, if you need appliances, why not talk with
Gail, Lisa or their expert staff?

Seven Memorable Moments in Newport Gulls History
• Before moving to Newport in 2001, the Rhode Island Gulls, as they were called for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, played at Cranston Stadium in Cranston, R.I. The 2000 club lost to the Keene Swampbats in the NECBL Championship Series, but the Newport Gulls would get revenge by defeating Keene in the finals in 2001 and 2002.
• The Gulls have one former player in the NECBL Hall of Fame: 2003 catcher Chris Ian-netta, who played for the Colorado Rockies from 2006-2011 and now plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The NECBL will induct its second class on Nov. 3, 2012.
• The Gulls, Cardines Field and the City of Newport have hosted the NECBL All-Star Game twice: in 2005, and again in 2010.
• On July 1, 2005, four Gulls pitchers combined for a near-perfect no-hitter at Rogers Park in Danbury, Conn., in a 5-0 win. SP Jeremy Hall walked Danbury's Matt Teale to start the game and allowed him to reach second on a throwing error, but combined with Danny Otero, who pitched five innings, Josh Lairsey and Travis Webb, who each pitched one, to retire the next 27 Westerners in order.

• Gulls 2B Jeff Miller turned an unassisted triple play - a feat rarer than a perfect game - at Cardines Field in the first inning of Game One of the 2005 NECBL Championship Series versus the Vermont Mountaineers on August 8, 2005.
• On July 21, 2006, the Gulls defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 5-0, at Cardines Field. SP Brandon McKerney kept them hitless through 5 and 2/3 innings before a blister on his finger ended his outing. Paul Nardozzi pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball before Mike Lynn closed out the ninth. The three pitchers combined for a no-hitter.
• Gulls SP Chase Reid struck out an NECBL-record 19 Torrington Twisters at Cardines Field on July 4, 2008. The Gulls won, 6-1, as Reid scattered five hits and walked none.

Log on to www.newport-gulls.com to watch the Gulls quest for a fifth NECBL Championship on the road, and when you can’t make
it to Cardines, tune in starting at 6:05 p.m. for the league’s only 30-minute pregame show featuring interviews with coaches, staff, players and special guests. The Gulls production team, lead for a ninth season by Executive Producer Tom Lima, features six cameras, professional graphics, instant replay, a 20-minute post-game report and more to bring Cardines Field into your home - live on your computer!
