CANADA’S BRITISH HOME CHILDREN EXHIBIT Come out to an interactive exhibit on the British Home Children at Newmarket’s Old Town Hall (460 Botsford Street) from April 1 to 15. The exhibit focuses on the British children who were sent to Canada between 1869 and 1939 to work as domestic and indentured farm workers. An official unveiling presentation will take place on April 1 at noon featuring the Sesquicentennial Canadian Memorial British Home Child 2017 Quilt and a viewing of the film ‘Lost and Found’. Exhibition times are from noon to 8 p.m. This exhibition is presented by the Elman W. Campbell Museum and the British Home Child Group International. PROTECT AGAINST FRAUD: DOOR-TO-DOOR SALES The Town of Newmarket has been recently made aware of a string of door- to-door sales people in the community misrepresenting Newmarket staff for utility services (water, heat, energy and gas). The Town of Newmarket does not conduct door-to-door sales. If residents suspect fraud or feel threatened, please contact York Regional Police's non- emergency line at 1-866-876-4523. For more information, visit newmarket.ca/doortodoorsales STORMWATER CHARGE: RESIDENTIAL INCENTIVE PROGRAM The Town of Newmarket has partnered with LEAF on a residential recognition program as part of the new Stormwater Charge initiative. The Town is offering a subsidized backyard tree planting program to thank residents for being environmentally conscious. Residents who would like a tree can contact LEAF directly. The Town will cover an additional $100 towards the purchase price of one tree per property. For more information, please visit yourleaf.org, call 1-888-453-6504 or email [email protected] Winter Parking Restrictions Winter Parking Restrictions Residents are reminded that parking restrictions continue until April 15, it is strictly prohibited to park a vehicle on any roadway: • That interferes with the clearing of snow • Between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from November 1 to April 15 • For more than three consecutive hours except between 7 p.m and 11 p.m. • In front of, or within two feet of a driveway or laneway For more information, call 905-895-5193 or visit newmarket.ca ADOPTION OF POWER OF ENTRY BY-LAW CLARIFICATION The Town of Newmarket Council will consider adopting a Power of Entry By-law at the March 27 Council meeting at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive). The purpose of the Power of Entry By-law is to assist Newmarket by-law officers in dealing with health and safety issues on properties when property owners are not available. Many of the current by-laws already include this provision. For example, if a pool enclosure is not properly secured, the by-law officer will attempt to contact the property owner and if not successful, will enter on to the property to correct the safety hazard. This by-law is going to Council to provide housekeeping amendments to older by-laws and to update legislated permissions. By-law officers will continue to attempt to seek permission from property owners before entering properties. Please note that Newmarket by-law officers already have the authority to conduct inspections on the exterior of a property. This by-law does not apply to interior property inspections.
