PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Our school is undergoing a comprehensive program to improve student learning and achievement levels. Our ambitious goal is to add more value to learning than might ordinarily be expected in similar school settings. We are invested in the Visible Learning approach that draws on evidence of what strategies have the most positive impact on student learning. We are looking at ways to make learning more visible where we place greater emphasis on our conversations about what good learning and progress look like. We want to develop more learners who are willing and engaged in thinking deeply about their learning and who use feedback from a variety of sources to understand their next learning steps. We know that when students use a variety of feedback that they learn more quickly and more deeply. I am encouraging our boys to think carefully about their mid year report and to set goals for Term 3 and 4. I regularly ask our boys if they know what they need to do to make progress and to improve their grades. I urge all parents and carers to ask your son/s if he is having regular conversations with his teachers to clalrify what he needs to do to move to the next achievement level.

I encourage parents to prepare questions ready for parent teacher interviews that allow you to get a clear understanding of the next stage in your son’s progress in learning. These conversations make learning more visible and assist our boys to strive for progress. A visible learner is a student who:

Can be their own teacher when required

Knows what they are learning and why

Can talk about the strategies they use to learn

Seeks challenge and is resilient and determined

See errors as opportunities to learn

Knows what to do next when they do not know what to do

Actively seeks feedback

Understands the assessment tools being used and knows what their results mean and can self-assess

Asks questions

Set mastery goals and know the next learning steps.

We wish all boys a restful holiday as they recharge their batteries and prepare for further learning in Term 3. There may be some changes to your sons’ teachers in Term 3 as a result of a number of staff changes. We welcome back Mr Ben Wilson and Mr Andrew Sweeney. Mr Ben Wilson joins our staff in Term 3 as an Assistant Principal and will lead initiatives in using ICT to improve student learning and to assist me to develop ways to ensure that students and parents can access our curriculum and learning resources online anywhere any time. I will be on leave for the first two weeks of Term 3 and in my absence Mr Bavage will be Acting Principal and Mr Newbold Acting Assistant Principal.

GRADE 7 NEWS

This term in Grade 7 we have celebrated many successes and are excited to see our students start to mature and adapt to life as high school students. Grade 7 students will receive their reports during the final week of term and families are invited to attend a parent teacher night at the beginning of Term 3. We encourage our students to read their reports carefully and to consider setting themselves some goals for their learning for the second half of the year. There are many opportunities offered to students for academic extension and we encourage all Grade 7s to seek out competitions, excursions and team activities as they arise. It is pleasing to note that Grade 7s have participated in Geography, History and Science based excursions, competitions and activities as well as the school music camp and the recent Hobart Eisteddfod. We would like to acknowledge Noah Whitney,7E1 and Jacob Archer, 7E1, who have been selected to represent the state for their respective age groups in Rugby and wish them the very best of luck.

A big well done to the Grade 7s who took part in the recent City to Casino Fun Run. All entrants completed the run and finished with pleasing times. This will be the first of many fun run opportunities offered to students. Thank you to the Grade 7s who took part in the recent Parent Information Evenings held here at school. These Grade 7s had a number of responsibilities including modelling our uniform, speaking about their experiences at high school and also answering questions.

There were a number of Grade 7 boys awarded Onya certificates at the recent school assembly. Onyas are awarded to students who are consistently dong the right thing and making an effort to do extra things around the school. The students were awarded certificates as they have reached the first Onya milestone of fifteen. Once they reach thirty Onyas they will receive an Onya mug, fifty a badge and then once they achieve one hundred Onyas they will have their name recorded on the 100 Onya Honour Board which hangs proudly in the Hudspeth Hall. It is pleasing to note that a number of our Grade 7 students are using their time after school, at lunch time and on weekends to represent the school in sporting pursuits. An eager group of students have been taking part in fencing, badminton, hockey and volleyball. Last week a number of Grade 7 students took part in the Grade7/8 AFL Grand Final against McKillop College. Thank you to Jordan Wilton, 7E1 and Jackson Donaghy, 7D1, for accepting the responsibility of writing and reading the Grade 7 Report at the recent junior school assembly. They spoke confidently on behalf of the grade.

Jordan Wilton Jackson Donaghy

The New Town High School Cross Country was fun and exciting event for our Grade 7s. This was their first carnival at New Town High School and this is reflected by excellent participation levels. Well done to all boys who had a go and represented their house! A further congratulations to the top ten placegetters in the grade who went on to represent the school at the Inter-high Cross Country. A big well done to Indiana Woolley, 7D1, who not only took out the Cross Country for Grade 7 but also won the

Inter-high Cross Country for his age group. Big efforts were put in by Umberto Tucceri, 7D2 and Riley Wood, 7E1, who finished second and third respectively.

Thank you to our Grade 7 Student Representative Council who have started to meet during lunch times and are putting together some ideas for fundraising and other grade activities. They were visited by members of the Prefect Board at their last meeting where they learned more about what leadership at New Town High School means. A reminder to families that after the holidays some of the option subjects will change for all Grade 7s. This will be an exciting adjustment period as students get used to new classes, teachers and the challenge of some new subjects. Students will all receive new timetables to reflect these changes. We wish all of our Grade 7 families a safe and

happy holiday and we hope our students get

some well needed rest ready to tackle Terms 3

and 4.

GRADE 8 NEWS

Reading student reports from our grade, it is apparent that there is a positive and recurrent theme of respectful behaviours, polite and enthusiastic participation and students working consistently hard to maintain and improve on academic standards. We acknowledge the care given and commitment to our boys on a daily basis by our dedicated Home Group staff throughout this first half of the year. We would also like to thank our Grade Assistant Principal,

Ms Dineley for all her hard work and support in all grade related matters this term. We welcome the following boys to New Town High and wish them well for the remaining terms: Jamison Ohl, 8-1, Siraj Babar, 8-7 and Adam Le, 8-7. We wish Mr Deeley a well- earned Long Service Leave in Term 3 and look forward to his return in Term 4. Ms Lancaster will be taking over Mr Deeley’s classes during this time. This term has flown by and our boys have been involved in some excellent programs that dedicated staff have worked hard to deliver. A highlight has been the Fairer World Program, overseen by Ms Coleman and supported by Mr Tisdale, Mr Lovell and Mr Bounds. At times some boys have found the program challenging, but the overwhelming consensus is that the boys feel they have learned a lot about the diverse world they live in and also about the skills of team work and dealing with the complex issues of empathy, resilience and compassion. We have an outstanding list of individual and team sport achievements in our grade.

Jordan Blyth, 8-4, placed fourth in Inter-high Cross Country and NTHS 1 Grade 8 Basketball Team – winner of the 3x3 Basketball Competition – Southern Schools. Charlie Pilkington, 8-7, has brought great pride and honour, not only to the school, but to our grade for his outstanding achievement in winning the State Rostrum Youth Speaks competition. Charlie will travel to Perth, WA, later in the year to compete in the National competition. Good luck, Charlie. Hunter was the successful house in the School’s Cross Country competition held earlier in the term - Mr Newbold’s Tuesday running club has certainly been a big hit with the boys and obviously contributed to their excellent results. Thanks to Mr Howard who has organised the Grade 7 and 8 basketball teams who competed in the All Schools 3 on 3 competition held recently at Moonah Stadium. We have two Grade 8 teams and it is important to note, that continued placement on the teams requires excellent behaviour by all boys – an added incentive for all boys to be focussed at all times in class! Our Grade 8 teams were successful with New Town 1 defeating New Town 3 in the Grand Final. New Town 2 finished third overall. At the time of writing this newsletter, the Grade 8 Debating team will have competed in the semi-finals against St Mary’s College. Regardless of the result, we are extremely proud of the team and the fine manner in which they have represented our school. Team members are: James Heazlewood, 8-2, Jonathon Aboud, 8-7, Joshua Hitchman, 8-7, Charlie Pilkington, 8-7 and Zackary Alexander, 8-5. Thank you, to Ms Guerzoni, who dedicates so much of her personal time to organising and supporting the debating teams at New Town High School. The Junior Football team was narrowly defeated in their Grand Final last week – again, we are extremely proud of the effort and skill of our boys. Thanks to Mr Tisdale who has been an enthusiastic and dedicated coach throughout the season. Grade 8 members of the team are: Harry Featherstone, 8-5, Bill Griggs, 8-6, Braidy Simpson, 8-1, Jack Rolls, 8-3, Jack Wells, 8-4, Jacob Nicholson, 8-3, Jesse Willmott, 8-4, Joshua Meredith, 8-2, Luke Nicholson, 8-5, Zackary Alexander, 8-5, Jack Grace, 8-3, Oliver Smith, 8-3, Heath Plummer, 8-3, Joshua Hilder, 8-5, Jaidyn Ford-Wolfe, 8-3 and Jordan Blyth, 8-4. All boys played well with Jordan Blyth kicking the first goal and stand out performances from Callum Thompson, Josh Hilder, Bill Griggs and Braidy Simpson. Jack Grace must get the award for the ‘most encouraging player’ – well done, Jack! The school Swimming Carnival will take place next term and our Student Representative Council is currently planning our grade soccer competition for Term 3. This week, our SRC will be meeting with our Principal, Mr Kilpatrick and our Head Prefect, Harrison Tunks to discuss leadership and other related school matters. Our boys will soon be in the final term of Grade 8 and heading toward the senior section of the school. Finally, we wish all students and staff a safe and happy holiday, and look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 24 July, Monday 23 July is a Student Free Day.

GRADE 9 NEWS

It was a hard fought and tumultuous year for Cross Country, as we saw a shake-up in the podium spots of the 4.1km trek. Bradley Jones, 9J2 and Dylan Cooper, 9J1, both of Jarvis took out silver and gold; doing the House proud and contributing a massive sum of points to Jarvis’ overall domination of the other Houses. Samuel Wright’s, 9D2, efforts put him in a remarkable third place, but alas it was not enough to award Dechaineux a silver medal overall, as Hunter took out the category. It was excellent to see such a sizable amount of students hit the pavement hard – participation is what wins races, not places.

Bradley Jones Dylan Cooper Samuel Wright

We saw Grade 9 flex their sporting muscle this term, leading a handful of students to interstate competition, proving Tasmania’s sporting excellence. Beau Johnson, 9D1, recently made the state teams in Gymnastics, competing for victory in Melbourne over a week. Jack Mariott, 9H1, valiantly and fearlessly competed in a national Jiu Jitsu competition in Launceston. Samuel Wright, 9D2, is off to a national develop squad in Darwin later on this year for cricket. Ashton Read, 9D1, demonstrated Tasmania’s sailing ability, and Samuel Payne, 9J1, showed us how hard it is to be ‘goals’ at sport when he competed in the Hockey National Tournament in NSW.

The Student Representative Council had success in its fundraising this term. The Mother’s Day raffle hailed profits of well near the $150 mark. The prizes were drawn and distributed, with a clean sweep by teachers and staff. The second endeavour undertaken by the SRC was that of the selling of Entertainment books. Entertainment Books are compiled of vouchers designed to attract tourists and locals to Tasmanian attractions. A portion of each book sold was donated towards the World Challenge Nepal trip; a very important event in the New Town High School calendar. The Home Group that purchased the most of these promotions is to be awarded a Pizza Party; harass Mr Newman for further details about that. Finally, Grade 9 students endured their final round of NAPLAN Testing. Whilst our final bout of standardised testing induced more memes and stress than skill and knowledge, the tests were essential in gaining integral data for the education system and how they can divert their resources to better suit certain schools and demographics. Behaviour and compliance is essential in the recording and application of this data, and everyone who undertook a test should be proud of themselves. Special thanks to Mr Heidenreich who has worked with our grade for the past two years, as Grade Supervisor and then Assistant Principal. He will be welcomed back by his original Home Group, and we look forward to working with Mr Wilson who is returning to New Town High as our grade Assistant Principal. Thank you for an excellent term. As of Thursday 21 June, the sun begins setting later. Let’s end the year on a home run – we’re halfway there.

GRADE 10 NEWS

Grade 10 has carried their sensational work from last term well into Term 2. Everyone is continuing to work hard in class and in extra-curricular activities to ensure that we make the best out of our remaining time here at New Town High. Our Grade has had another two state representatives this term, with Jayden Vince, 10H1, and Tyler McDonald, 10H2, being selected for the Under 16 State Hockey Team who will compete for Tasmania in August. We wish these boys the best of luck.

New Town High students recently competed in our own Cross Country Carnival. The event went well with lots of help from the Grade 10 Leadership Team on the day. Houses learnt that participation is key to winning the Carnival with Jarvis coming out on top with a considerable margin over the other houses. Congratulations to Max Waters, 10D2 and Jack Willmott, 10J2, who were crowned Champion and Runner-up respectively for the Grade 10 race.

On Wednesday 13 June, the top ten runners from each grade competed in the Inter-high Cross Country. We had some tough

competition to face from the boys over at Taroona but we had a team to match. Our boys put in maximum effort and all ran for each other but sadly finished in second to Taroona (to the anger of a few). Our highest finishers in our grade were Max Waters, 10D2 and Jack Willmott, 10J2. Well done to the following boys from the top ten who ran on the day: Max Waters, 10D2, Jack Willmott, 10J2, Jye Menzie, 10H1, Oliver Blum, 10E1, Deklan Haas, 10E2, Cooper Anderson, 10H2, Brody Kirkby, 10H2, Adam Baines, 10J2. This term, our Peer Support Leaders have been visiting the classes of their Peer Support Groups to assist students and teachers. As part of their duties of being a Peer Support Leader, they had to visit at least six classes during Term 2 before they could earn their Peer Support badge. Mr Howard has done an excellent job in organising the program, which is a crucial part of the transition for Grade 7s from primary school to high school. On Monday 18 June, the whole of Grade 10 had their Orientation Day at Elizabeth College. We rocked up to the College gym at 8.45 for an information session and to assign us into home groups. There were a combined total of 40 high schools from around Tasmania (and two mainlanders) including locations such as King

Island and Triabunna. We then had a quick tour from our Home Group teacher and moved on to our first class of the day followed by a quick recess. We had another class followed by lunch with a special performance by former New Town High students (Alex Long and Kelly Stone, both Class of 2017) plus a free BBQ. We then had our last two classes for the day and made our way home. We all loved the experience and cannot wait for next year and the opportunities it holds.

The Leadership Team carried its high work ethic into this term. We had the Grade 6 Parent Information Evenings, which were a huge success, and we’re sure that we’ll have many boys for next year to replace our impending departure. Our Lunchtime Sport Committee organised an intense Basketball Roster with E2 coming out victorious against H1 by only 1 point. The committee has also begun holding a lunchtime Futsal Tournament, with the first match being a stunning game between D1 and D2. Despite a strong lead by D2, D1 pulled off a thrilling comeback to win the game 8-6, with some amazing skills and goals on display. The Leadership Team pledges to continue its great work into next term.

ENGLISH NEWS

A busy term is reaching its finale in a week, rich in cultural performances bringing literature alive for our students. The Bell Shakespeare troupe made it a winter of content presenting ‘Macbeth: A Rehearsal’ to our Grade 10 students and the very entertaining ‘Shakespeare is Dead’ to Grade 9. Poetry in Action presented two shows – ‘The Poets’ Quest’ to Grade 7 and ‘Words of War’ to Grade 10. These performances along with the highly thought-provoking ‘Cyberia’ presented to all Grades highlight our focus on enriching the way we use language to explore and connect as members of human society. A considerable number of students have confirmed our school’s fine reputation for speaking to engage, entertain and stimulate considered thought on the issues that matter and shape their future in our community, our nation and our world. Five students - Charlie Pilkington, 8-7, Alex Rolle, 9D2, Guntaj Singh, 9D2, Evan Stone, 9J2, Luke Van Emmerik, 9J2, entered the Southern Regional Junior finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth speaking competition on Saturday 12 May.

Rostrum Voice of Youth is the premier public speaking competition for secondary school students throughout Australia. Students participating deliver a prepared speech on one of five set topics plus a short notice speech of three minutes and are judged on their ability to speak with confidence and engage their audience through appeal to the intellect and the emotions. Our students presented engaging and inspiring speeches on the incredible legacy of Albert Einstein, on the role of journalism in the modern world, the lessons learnt from the ball-tampering scandal, the burden our fast consumerism places on sustainability and the good Aussie bloke. In a total of twenty-six students speaking for three places in the State finals, it is a wonderful achievement that Evan Stone was runner-up in the Green room while Charlie Pilkington touched the adjudicators’ hearts and minds, winning the Red room

division. The State finals were held in Launceston on Saturday 16 June at Scotch Oakburn College in

Launceston. Charlie chose to speak on the topic ‘A Turning Point’, cleverly looking at the cultural shift made by social media on our lives. His clever spontaneous speech on the need to ‘slow down’ rounded out a fine performance and confirmed him as the State winner for 2018 and the Malcolm Grant Shield which has returned to our showcase for the second time in three years. Charlie will represent Tasmania at the National Rostrum Voice of Youth Competition on Saturday 28 July in Perth. We wish him all the very best. It is important to acknowledge that Evan Stone, 9J2, represented the School as part of the Tasmanian team in the UN Youth Voice Public Speaking competition in late April and Harrison Tunks, 10E1, was an integral member of the State Debating team which competed quite strongly in the Australian Debating Championships. Harrison will also be a member of Youth Parliament in the July break. In debating our teams continue to shine – in a difficult and challenging TDU season, two teams have made it to the semi-finals. The Grade 8 team – Jonathon Aboud, 10E1, Zackary Alexander, 8-5, Jacob Blum, 8-6, James Heazlewood, 8-2, Ashton Hill, 8-2, Joshua Hitchman, 8-7, Charlie Pilkington, 8-7, began the year strongly but has found the latter rounds more of a challenge so hopes to vindicate a narrow Round 4 loss to St Mary’s College. The Grade 10 team – Jasper France, 10D1, Evan Stone, 9J2 and Harrison Tunks, 10E1, – hopes to continue a winning streak through to the finals rounds. A report on the full season with all the highs and lows worthy of World Cup competition will follow the finals. Suffice it to say with all sincerity our debaters speak volumes for our students’ abilities to engage with audiences. We express a sincere vote of thanks to all the parents, relatives and friends who have supported our debaters throughout the season. We have all found every opportunity to express joy and pride in how finely our young men can convey deep thoughts and understanding with eloquence. There has been a treasure-trove of fine writing from our students. We present two pieces – a

SOUTHERN SCHOOLS SPORTS 3V3

BASKETBALL COMPETITION

On Monday 25 June, the first ever Inter-high Southern Schools 3v3 Basketball Competition was held at Moonah Sports Centre. This day saw students in Grade 7 and Grade 8 from schools all across the south of Tasmania compete in a tough competition against each other. Four New Town High teams were entered in this competition, three of those teams were from Grade 8 and one team was from Grade 7. Teams included up to five players. Three of the teams advanced through to the grand finals. Each team put on the blue triangle uniform and wore it with pride. Every player who stepped foot on the court showed great heart and hustle, the New Town way. Two of the New Town High Grade 8 teams made it to their respective grand finals, with Coach

Tyson Joseph’s team proving victorious against Coach Howard’s team. The other team, coached by Liam Bartle, finished third, going down in a nail biting qualifying final match against Coach Howard’s team. All three of the Grade 8 teams fought hard all day and should be extremely proud of themselves. With only one team entered in Grade 7, this competition saw them get their first taste of New Town High basketball. The team, coached by Riley Best, fought hard all day, showing great promise for the up and coming New Town High ballers. This team did the school proud. The only game they lost for the day was in the grand finale against a very tough opponent. LETS GET TOGETHER PROGRAM LAUNCH

Wednesday 2 May was the official launch assembly of the Let’s Get Together program for New Town High, aimed at creating a more respectful school environment for us. We were joined by Lord Mayor of Hobart Ron Christie, Melanie van Egdom from Equal Opportunity Tasmania, Greg Sawyer from A Fairer World, Karen Commane from our School Association,

and Dave Kilpatrick our school Principal, who all signed the Let’s Get Together pledge to investigate and initiate positive change by students in our school community. Head Prefect Harrison Tunks, 10E1, signed on behalf of all students. For the rest of the term, all Grade 8s participated in the Let’s Get Together program to build on their empathy and desire to create positive change for the school community. We look forward to seeing what the boys will bring to this challenge!

HOBART HUMAN LIBRARY

On Monday 30 April and Tuesday 1 May Grade 8 students experienced the Hobart Human Library, where they listened to the stories from human ‘books’, and were able to talk and ask questions about their lives. It was an eye-opening opportunity for many of our boys, but a positive one as they learned about stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination in a safe and supportive environment.

Congratulations to Harrison Tunks, 10E1, who won a Highly Commended Award for the What Matters? Tasmania 2018 Writing Competition. Harrison has now been invited to the Awards Ceremony on Monday 30 July at Learning Services Southern Region to receive his award. Well done Harrison!

Congratulations to Charlie Pilkington, 8-7, on his wonderful achievement, winning the State Rostrum Voice of Youth Junior Section.

Charlie was magnificent in his delivery of his six minute prepared speech ‘Turning Point’ - totally engaging in his presentation – and his spontaneous speech (15 minutes prep for a 3 minute speech) was well-executed. The standard in this competition is extremely high and Charlie has brought great credit to New Town High School, bringing us the Malcolm Grant trophy for a second time in three years.

Charlie will represent Tasmania at the National Finals in Perth on 28 July.

STAFF SUCCESS

Suzie Jones recently represented Australia in the Oceania Karate Cup held in Auckland. She won silver in the 45+ years female kumite division, and bronze in the 45+ years female kata division. It was the first time that veteran events were included, and this event over the next two years will provide the pathway for selection for the

karate world masters games in Tokyo in 2021! Well done, Ms Jones!

GIVE ME 5 FOR KIDS

LIBRARY NEWS

We are currently running a few promotions in our School Library. 2018 World Cup A few weeks ago we organised a World Cup Soccer draw, and individual students and some home groups were given their own qualifying team to barrack for and follow. We are following the scores and we will see which team will be victorious. There will be a Home Group prize, or an individual prize available to the owner/s of the winning country. We have a number of World Cup magazines and books about some of the superstar players, available to borrow. Selected matches are being replayed on the big screen at lunch times in the library. Save a book! We currently have a number of outdated and unused books which need to be weeded (removed) in order to keep our book collections current and relevant. We seek the help of students and staff to confirm if books should be removed or saved. We regularly purchase new books and student requested books so the space on shelves is welcomed. Any discarded books can be purchased for a small fee of 10c – 50c each and saved from disposal. Coming up: CBCA Children's Book Week 17 - 24 August 2018 Theme: Find Your Treasure

What treasures have you found in a book/s? See what treasures our New Town High staff have found in books in Term 3? Treasure gathering activities will be organised in the Library for Book week. Will students or staff be able to follow the clues to the treasures that will be hidden in the depths of the Library? Chess Matches Organised chess games to learn or help improve student chess skills will be starting at the end of August 2018, Term 3. Chess boards are available to use at lunchtime. REMINDER to students and staff to renew or return your library books before the end of Term 2. I will be away for the first three weeks of Term 3.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS

At this time of the year, Grade 7 students are reflecting on their first Semester at New Town High School in elective subjects such as Design and Technologies. These include Food Studies, Design Technology in Wood, Metal and Digital Technology. Our very committed staff in the Technologies learning area have led a variety of stimulating and engaging learning opportunities for your sons. Experiences in Food Studies has provided learners with opportunities to become independent, safe and hygienic food handlers. They can prepare a range of simple recipes, recognise any hazards in the kitchen and know how to react personally and as members of a team. Students are encouraged to cooperate and work towards effective time management in a practical and demanding class. In most lessons they have achieved this goal! No doubt you have been offered a sample of the recipes prepared in class. Hopefully, in the school holidays you will continue to encourage

Page 16: NEW TOWN HIGH SCHOOL...Jul 03, 2018  · the recent City to Casino Fun Run. All entrants completed the run and finished with pleasing times. This will be the first of many fun run

your sons to cook at home and prepare a breakfast or lunch, make a slice or batch of savoury whirls. Grade 7 students have also created an attractive display of Food Safety posters in the Foods Corridor. Congratulations also to our Junior Chefs of the Month from Jacob Thayer, 8-5, Abhishek Rana, 7E2 and

Tri Tam Nguyen, 10J2. In Grade 8, Food Studies students have made a successful transition from partner work to creating individual recipes. This means that students are further developing their cookery skills and time management. Mr Andrews has created an attractive display of Grade 8 student work highlighting safe food zones and reheating temperatures. Recipe selection has included light meals such as Risotto, Pumpkin Soup and Damper as well as Cajun fish and chips! Most recently students are trying their cake making skills and learning simple icing techniques. Next term students will meet a variety of food industry representatives including those in hospitality and food production. During Term 2, Grade 9 and 10 Food Studies students have been challenged to make a range of complex recipes. These include a unit of work on breads and pastries. Favourite recipes have included the Italian Pizza, Bagels and Lemon Meringue Pie. Next term senior students will engage in a contemporary study of foods from other cultures and how this has changed the traditional view of a typical Australian meal.

Congratulations to the Senior Chefs of the Month this term Andrew Smith, 9J1 and Adam Bain, 10J2.

Term 2 in Design in Wood has been very busy and boys have been constructing their projects with enthusiasm and skill. The Grade 8 students have made coat racks and wood turned bowls whilst the senior students are constructing Tasmanian Minor Species cheeseboards, wood turned stools and bowls, coffee tables and picture frames.

ARTS NEWS

STEM…what’s missing? Here in Hobart at this very moment, through Dark Mofo, we are being treated to a massive influx of money at a time of year traditionally associated with a downturn, through Arts tourism. It is worthwhile just pausing for a moment to consider the serious contribution made by artists of all persuasions, such as Contemporary Musicians and Visual Artists, Physical and Theatrical Performers, creative writers and Film Makers etc... I may be so bold to also include those people who design and prepare food, otherwise known as Chefs, Restaurateurs and ‘Foodies”. Now, one does not have to think too much before we begin to recognise the economic

Page 17: NEW TOWN HIGH SCHOOL...Jul 03, 2018  · the recent City to Casino Fun Run. All entrants completed the run and finished with pleasing times. This will be the first of many fun run

importance of Arts based industries. Certainly without these Arts industries our economy in Tasmania would still be depressed, even with our eco-tourism, yet we too often take for granted the existence of these industries and it is worthwhile reflecting upon Arts based education and how that contributes to your son’s economic future. You see “STEM” could maybe be called “STEAM”? Yes that’s right - Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS and Mathematics. Most advanced global economies rightfully recognise Arts within that framework. It makes sense doesn’t it!? Arts based industries require a solid Arts Education not only to enhance the creative talents of our children, but also to allow all children participating within the Arts to develop an expressive voice or their own and learn about how to consume and appreciate artworks of all kinds. The continued maintenance of Arts based learning areas within our schools is therefore very important. Arts based learning areas inspire our boys to be original creators and not just passive consumers. It is precisely this idea that can be transferred into Science, Engineering and all forms of business, giving us the permission to ask questions and use creative solutions to solve problems. Unfortunately, it is not hard to see a future where we become the passive consumers of other countries inventions and culture rather than our own. Sometimes we take events like Dark Mofo for granted. Art appears out of nowhere and sometimes we consume Art without thinking about the people that made it possible in the first place! Artists entertain us and make us wonder about the world. At the very centre of a festival like Dark Mofo are artists. Where do they come from? The answer to this partly lies in an education that includes Arts in a meaningful way. Artists are helping drive our economy, entertain us and help us celebrate our right to freedom of expression – not a small contribution is it! Maybe it’s time Arts and Art Education is officially recognised for its contribution to the free-world and maybe we can all reflect on this

contribution when we are looking to give your boy(s) a balanced learning framework when they select option subjects early next term.

MATHS NEWS

New Town High School has continued in its endeavour to provide our students an excellent Mathematics program. We consistently produce students with strong mathematical skills, ready to tackle the challenge of college and tertiary equivalent education. Achievements of our students are regularly recognised in our school assemblies. The mathematics department presents a Mathematician of the Month Award, presented to students, who perform extremely well in each Grade. In Term 2 the award was presented for ‘Outstanding Performance’ so far this year. We acknowledge that many boys are performing admirably and achieving well above their grade level. The task of identifying award winners is an arduous one, however, the selected students deserve the accolade and should be proud of their success. The award winners were:

Andy Thinh Charlie Pilkington Zackary Alexander

William Spongberg Michael Napthali Harrison Tunks

All students are encouraged to participate in the forthcoming activities and competitions. These are an excellent way to develop and nature mathematical thinking and problem solving skills in fun learning environment. Australian Mathematics Competition will be held on Thursday 9 August. Interested students can contact their Maths teacher or Mr Newman/Mr Pratap to register their names. The cost of around $6.50 will be paid by the school and only a gold coin donation is expected from participating students. The Maths Relay Competition will be held later in the year. Maths Tutorial Whilst students can arrange with their teacher to receive additional support at any time, Mr Pratap is available every Wednesday at lunch time to assist students individually or in small groups to help sort any difficulties students may have. It includes assistance with homework tasks. The tutorial is provided in a supportive environment where students can have their lunch as they receive assistance and can choose to stay for as long as they need to or want to. Students who have taken advantage of this provision have shown a lot of growth in their confidence and knowledge. For more information students are encouraged to have a chat with their Maths teacher or Mr Pratap/Mr Newman.

LEARNING CENTRE NEWS

It's been a busy Term 2 and a hive of activity in the Learning Centre. There is always a strong focus on numeracy, literacy and life skills in the Centre, skills that prepare our boys for life post high school. A group of students in the Learning Centre are currently engaging in a community project, learning about the different services in our community. First, students are studying the postal system and what items we can post through the mail and how to post them. Students created an A4 postcard writing a personal note to their families. On Tuesday 19 June, we walked up to the main road to post the postcards home. Back at the Learning Centre, students are now learning about the emergency services and when to call triple zero.

We took a break from the classroom and Learning Centre on Friday 15 June, and approximately sixteen students and staff made their way to 'Old Hobart Town Model Village' in Richmond. The boys were thoroughly engaged, taking in all the details of the village as they worked in small groups to answer questionnaires. There were lots of connections made with Hobart as it is now. Despite the cold, the excursion culminated in lots of fun at the All Abilities Bellerive Beach Park, then hot chocolates in the Learning Centre to warm up before going home tired but contented!

STAYING IN EDUCATION: INCREASED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING LEAVING

REQUIREMENTS FROM 2020

Tasmanian students are staying in education and training for longer, assisting them to achieve a qualification that significantly improves their life chances and choices. The progress made over the last four years is clear to see in this graph showing Tasmanian Education Retention and Attainment. The changes made by the Education Act 2016 will help us to keep improving, with increased minimum education and training requirements to apply for students who are in Years 11 and 12 in 2020 (and students in earlier school years). This change will apply to students who are currently in Years 9 and Year 10 in 2018 and support the growing community expectation that education does not end in Year 10 – in fact, Years 11 and 12 are two of the most important years of school. They might be a student’s last years at a school but they are the first steps into their future. Times have changed and the vast majority of today's jobs require a Year 12 or higher qualification. Employers are looking for people who are able to show they are flexible, adaptable and willing to learn new things. What young people need to complete their education is not a ‘one-size fits all’ solution. The new education and training leaving requirements recognise the need to have an option for everyone. High school students should talk to their teachers about their options and what will best suit their needs. This will help them make informed choices about what will work for them. Your pathways: Where to from here is a great place to start looking at the many options available. Education and training participation pathways may include:

senior secondary study at a college or a school offering Years 11 and 12, or being home educated

undertaking vocational education and training (VET), including through a registered training organisation, a Trade Training Centre or an apprenticeship or traineeship, including an Australian School-based Apprenticeship.

In certain circumstances, a young person may be eligible for an exemption, including where they have secured full-time employment (35 hours a week). It’s not always easy to stay in school – but anything can happen when you finish school.

EDSMART PARENT PAPER WORK

EdSmart is a web browser based online tool to capture information and responses for your childrens’ activities. New Town High School has purchased the Parent Paperwork EdSmart system and use it to distribute online forms for you to complete and submit. Why do schools use EdSmart? Schools spend considerable amounts of time managing paper forms, even a modest sized school is creating, copying, distributing and collating hundreds and hundreds of paper forms every year. By switching to online forms the school is able to save many, many hours of staff time, and free up that time for more important activities, like teaching and supporting your children. And of course reducing paper usage is also fantastic for the environment. How does it work for a parent? You simply click the link shown in the email and a secure web page will open, containing information from the school, and various questions for you to complete and answer. Some forms include Google Maps, to show you where the activity is taking place. Some may have a calendar icon you can click to add the activity to your own electronic diary, like Outlook or Google Calendar. Do I need to do anything to register or set up? No. EdSmart does not use mobile apps or any special software. You do not need to register or set anything up. All you need is an email address and a web browser. And all the EdSmart web pages are specifically designed to work great on desktop computers, tablets and smartphones. Is my information safe? EdSmart stores your information in a secure data centre operated by Microsoft in Melbourne, Australia, and is compliant with all aspects of the relevant Australian privacy legislation. The information is only accessible to a select group of staff at your school. Below is an example of the email you will receive. This is a legitimate email from New Town High School and we ask parents of Grade 8 and Grade 9 students, to complete is as soon as possible. Many thanks to parents who have completed this to date.

2018 Excursion Information Dear Parent Name, New Town High has sent you a new online form for NTHS Student. We need your response by 20th July 2018. Please click this link to respond, or copy and paste the web address below into your web browser. URL TO Form
