Luxury passenger steamer Rex Passenger steamer Rex was present time cruise ship, an Italian ocean liner which operated transatlantic crossings.Rex was a combination of top shipping technology and luxury hotel. For such a big and prestigious ship, it was built in a fairly short time, merely 2 years and 5 months. In that era Rex was the biggest passenger ship under Italian flag and almost 3 times as powerful as Titanic.

The ship was 40 meters long with 2 outdoor pools, gym, comfortable restaurants, shops, cinemas, theater etc.

Blue RibandBetween the years 1933 and 1935 Rex was given the Blue Riband which was an official accolade given to the passenger liner crossing the Atlantic Ocean with the record speed. Rex fulfilled the constructors promises in August of 1933 when it sailed the distance between Gibraltar and New York with a time of 4 days and 13 hours and with the average travelling speed of 28,92 knots. Rex held on to the blue riband for almost 2 years and it is till today the only Italian ship awarded with this honorable accolade.

Rex’s DestinyIn the beginning of WWII Rex ceased with its cross-ocean sailings. The ship was painted black to make it harder to spot it from the air. During the war the ship was used to trans-port the wounded. Towards the end of the war it was moved to Bay of Koper where the ship ran aground approximately 200 meters from the shore where it was bombarded till turning over and sinking in shallow water. The remains were scavenged for scrap iron.

In 1662 the English scientist presented a paper detailing how the presence of sugar in a wine led to it eventually sparkling and that by adding sugar to a wine before bottling it, nearly any wine could be made to sparkle. This suggested that the British merchants were producing sparkling wine before French were deliberately making champagne.

CocktailsCocktail comes from the words cock and tail. There are many interesting stories about the origin of the word cocktail but none of them is proven so the origin remains a mystery. Some say that the word originates from cock fights where at the end the winner pulled the colorful feathers of the loser’s cock’s tail as a trophy which was celebrated with a drink called “on a cock’s tail”. Others believe that the name is supposedly from the French name of the glasses in which these drinks were served in. The glasses were originally used for eggs and were called “coquetier”. And the third version says that it originates from the different colors of drinks and other ingredients of the cocktails before they are all mixed together as the colors resemble to cock’s tail.

NegroniThe story about the legend-ary cocktail says that it was invented at the beginning of 20 century by an Italian count Camillio Negroni who liked drinking another cocktail classic, americano (Campari with vermouth and soda), but it was a bit light for him, so he told the bartender to reolace the soda with gin. And that0s how Negroni was born, a mixture of Campari, red vermouth and gin which is till today a world hit.

Moscow muleForget about Cosmopolitan, Cuba libre and Sex on the beach. After 75 years this legendary cocktail is back. It was invented to persuade Americans to drink vodka. We are of course talking about Moscow Mule, a cocktail that was the most googled in the last 2 years by Americans. This cocktail is for sure one of the trendiest cocktails now, but not long ago nobody knew about it.

Green LjubljanaThe green capital of the green country

Lively and charming Ljubljana is a medium sized European capital. It is as confident as any bigger European capital, but at the same time it preserves the friendliness of a smaller town, which makes her friendly to the people who live here as well as to tourists. The image of the town along Ljubljanica river was designed by the famous architects Jože Plečnik. The city is surrounded by parks, only a few steps from Rex, you can take a rest in the biggest and the most beautiful park in Ljubljana, Park Tivoli. The symbol of Ljubljana is a dragon which can be found also in the city’s coat-of-arms. There are different legends as to why a dragon is such an important part of the city. Our favorite is the one about the Jason and the argonauts as we are sure that Jason in the later days would use Rex ship instead of Argo. And there is another myth that connects Ljubljana with Rex. It says that an anchor from the ocean liner Rex is the one that you can find on display at the Congress square of Ljubljana. Others say that this anchor is not of the same dreadnought style that Rex had, but we’ll let you be the judge of that. No matter what you decide, the truth is that the anchor symbolizes the defeat of fascist expansionism.

They were design by an architect, university professor and the father of Slovenian industrial design Mr. Niko Kralj. His Surname Kralj means King in Slovene language.

Niko Kralj is considered to be one of the world’s most important industrial designers of 20th century. In his long designer career, he designed many versions of the famous rex chair as well as other iconic furniture. Innovative solutions that he used in his designs contributed greatly to the development of Slovene furniture industry. Because of the timeless design many of Kralj’s products are placed among the classics of the world’s industrial design.
