Board BooksIt all began in 1519,

with Christoph Froschauer and Huldrych Zwingli …

Christoph Froschauer is the first quali-fied printer to settle in the city of Zurich. Originally from Bavaria, he becomes a naturalised citizen of Zurich in 1519 – the same year Huldrych Zwingli is elected to the post of priest at the Gross-münster cathedral. Zwingli and Fro-schauer get on well. Their cooperation lays the foundations for a publishing house of European standing …

500 Years: Events and Milestones

16th Century

1531 Froschauer prints Zwingli‘s ‚Zür- cher Bibel‘ (Zurich Bible).

1534 One of the first maps of the world showing America is published.

1564 Froschauer dies of the plague after publishing more than 700 books.

17th Century

1650 Rudolf and Conrad Meyer‘s ‚Ster-bensspiegel‘ (The Mirror of Death) is published – a highlight of Baroque book illustration.

18th Century

1732 A translation of John Milton‘s ‚Paradise Lost‘ is published.

1756 Salomon Gessner‘s ‚Idyllen‘ (‚Idylls‘) are published, causing a sensa-tion throughout Europe.

1762 The first edition of Shakespeare‘s works in German is published.

1778 The publishing house presents the first complete translation of Homer‘s works.

19th Century

1812 Johann David Wyss‘s ‚Der Schweiz-erische Robinson‘ (‚The Swiss Family Robinson‘) is published and becomes a children‘s classic.

1833 The University of Zurich is estab-lished and the publishing house focuses on non-fiction, pedagogics and text-books.

20th Century

1924 The publishing department be-comes independent from the printing office, establishing a market presence of its own.

1971 Carigiet‘s picture books ‚Schel-len-Ursli‘ (‚A Bell for Ursli‘), ‚Flurina‘ (‚Flurina and the Wild Bird‘), etc. switch to Orell Füssli.

21st Century

2003 Orell Füssli‘s children‘s book de-partment is extended. Atlantis is inte-grated as an imprint.

2007 Globi Publishers (home of the ‚Papa Moll‘ series) is integrated as an-other imprint.

2013 A brand-new children‘s book pro-gramme is established: ‚Orell Füssli Kinderbuch‘.

2019 It‘s the publishing house‘s 500th birthday. It is part of the Orell Füssli Holding AG and is run as one of its four divisions.

We proudly present:

Ten Tiny, Spooky GhostsMarty the Coole-Woole-Hat-Ghost: Very cool, cheeky, ad-venturous and brave in any situation, leader and taking ac-tion, squirelly and sometimes impatient. Does not go any-where without his beanie hat, used to live in a launderette and likes Lucy very much.

Lucy the Pattern-Mix-Ghost: She loves pattern, pattern and pattern and to decorate everything, too, wears chains and sometimes tiaras and is a bit vain. Her decoration ob-session gets funny results but is sometimes annoying for everyone else. Not the adventurous type but structured and well-arranged, sticking to her plans without getting dis-tracted, keeping a cool head in chaotic situations, touchy. She is the instigator of the ghost community and Marty’s best friend.

Scotty, the Bookworm-Ghost: Does a lot of research in the internet, a bit nerdy, eloquent with knowledge of eccentric vocabulary . Couch potatoe who only feels comfy when in-doors, hates fresh air, likes to withdraw, cookie chips and lemonade and is sometimes hardly trackable. Very smart and technology-crazed. Real adventures are not his thing.

Raffi, the Rumpelstiltskin-Ghost: He’s a very emontional ghost who quickly hits the ceiling and gets as angry as Rumpelstiltskin. It is no easy job to soothe him down. Full of spirits, loves action and sports. Gets dissed from time to time, because he has such a high temper. Hangs around the graveyard quiet often, and used to live there as well, before moving in with the other ghosts.

Lilly, the Friendly-Ghost and her dog Chilli: Very friendly, empathetic, helpful with a big sense of justice. Interested in all kinds of animals, especially in dogs. Her dog is a fine scout but on the contrary to the ghosts is not able to fly. He wanders between the ghost-world and the human-world.

Uncle Oscar, the bulky Ghost-in-Charge: Chubby because he loves eating so much, especially fancy cake. As most ex-perienced ghost he ist he leader of the group with good ad-vice for anyone and the intermediator. He also scolds (his nephew Flitty gets most), and keeps everything in order and takes on responsibility.

Rufus, the Gloomy-Ghost: Nocturnal and lonely before he got to know the other nine ghosts. Loves to scare others, but never in a mean way. A sensitive character, from time to time blue.

Baldwin, the Gatherer- Ghost: early-bird and always on the run. Collects things and always carries his red bag to be able to store newly found things for his various collections. Gets along well with the Bookworm-Ghost Scotty. Loves ex-peditions and cannot wait to go out and detect new places. When at home, often sorts his souvenirs, by spreading every-thing on the barn floor. Bibbi, the Jittering-Ghost: the tall, slender ghost is afraid of thunderstorms and rain. Then she hides and trembles even more than usual. She also detests snow as well as any form of water. The other ghosts sometimes tease her because of her timidity. She wants to be part of the group and does not like to be on her own, except when she is dancing.

Flitty, the Mini-Ghost: Very tiny ghost, fits through every-thing, even keyholes. Very flexible and able to change his form. Defiant, stubborn, not always telling the truth, often hiding in his soup can to think about things.

Dream Your Fantasies!

When the Ten Tiny, Spooky Ghosts fall asleep, they each dream their own, indi-vidual dream. Ralphie dreams he‘s sail-ing a pirate ship to Treasure Island, Ru-fus sees himself as a bold knight at a jousting tournament. Fairy tales are popular, too. Lucy is being visited by the witch while Marty is heroically protect-ing the Seven Little Goats from the Big,

Bad Wolf. In the last scene they‘re all flying to dreamland together, on a magic carpet.

A Hidden-Object Book with the Ten Tiny, Spooky Ghosts

The Ten Tiny, Spooky Ghosts have their hands full: Tonight, they’re having a ghostly party at their castle. Until then, there’s a lot to do. Things would be much easier, though, if Chilly, the small dog, didn’t keep sabotaging their prepara-tions. His main goal is to save every last one of the delicious bones that he’s hid-ing from the cat in every scene...It’s not easy for their young audience to find the ghosts and their dog in the busy rooms of the castle. Finally, however, the party begins and it’s going on until

the drawbridge has been winched up again, everybody has left and every last ghost has literally hit the hay.

Who is first on the swing? A tiny, spooky ghost is playing on the swing in the moonshine. But it has not been alone for long when another one comes along and joins it. And there are more to come: There is another, and another... until all ten of them spill to the ground, along with the swing. After their crash land-ing, the new rule is: One ghost at a time on the swing! A wonderful counting-out rhyme for young children and a lot of fun to count along with.

Children love to celebrate their birth-days. And the best thing about a birth-day is – the cake! And … presents! But what if none of them are really suitable? It is Flitty’s birthday and he cannot wait to open his presents from the other nine tiny, spooky ghosts. But not one of them is really spot-on. What is he supposed to do with an enormous cap, a dog’s bone or a pair of old hiking boots? Flitty’s birthday party is about to turn into a re-ally sad affair – but then, suddenly, there it is: the perfect present!

1, 2, 3... many phants! An elephant with 2 ears and a measly 3 hairs on his head stands on 4 legs, pro-duces 5 heaps of droppings, is followed by 6 flies and so on. The likeable elephant doesn’t just encourage children to help him count and get to know the numbers from 1 to 10. He also has an appetite for bananas – lots of bananas! And so, in the end, he doesn’t only eat 10 of them, no, he eats a great many – too many, actually, as he finally has to admit! As simple as it is amusing – a beginners’ guide to counting.

The Big Holiday Hidden Object Book

Marc Locatelli

A hidden object book about everybody’s favourite time of the year: the long vaca-tion. Here are seven large-format double pages about a family who are spending their holiday at a campsite. They soon find new friends who join them for day trips in the vicinity. There are countless details to be discov-ered in these teeming pictures, and they all tell new stories of their own: What are the family doing? Or the troop of boy scouts? What is the lady in the overalls tinkering with this time? And on every

page, there are things that seem out of place. What is an elephant doing in the Alps? Or a bouquet of flowers down a mineshaft?

Marc Locatelli, born 1954, is a qualified graphic designer, an illustrator and a sports enthusiast who lives and works in Zurich. Outdoors, Indoors, Anywhere is his second Hidden Object Book pub-lished by Orell Füssli Kinderbuch.

Outdoors, Indoors, Anywhere Every animal produces its own charac-

teristic sounds: deep, loud, high, beauti-ful ones. A lion roars, an elephant trum-pets, a parrot screeches. But what does a giraffe sound like? The riddle is only solved at the very end of the book.A colourful board book that requires no batteries and fosters language develop-ment, with lots of fun guaranteed!Rhymes encourage children to guess at and imitate animal sounds – a timeless favourite with young children.

Susanne Weber is a freelance editor and a successful writer of children’s books. Her board book ’The Bruised Owl’ has been on the prestigious Spiegel best-seller list for two years now, with 170’000 copies sold.

Tina Schulte studied graphic design, focusing on illustration. She has illus-trated children’s books (stories by Paul Maar among them) for numerous re-nowned publishing houses. She lives in Münster with her family and, as a freelance illustrator, is a member of the Atelier Hafenstrasse (Hafenstrasse Workshop).

You can do sports in all kinds of places; you can get some exercise and play practically anywhere: in the water, in the park, in the schoolyard, at the ice rink or in the football or sports stadium. The sports and games played in the hidden object pictures are just as varied. There is a whole palette of sports pictured, be it trampoline jumping, tug-of-war, jugg-ling or swimming, rock-climbing, cycling or sack-races. The pictures encourage children to take a closer look and try to

find out what is happening to Hugo, where the child in the polo-neck jumper is and what a group of children in num-bered T-shirts are up to.

Marc Locatelli was a sports enthusiast even as a child. Equally early, he began to draw, with sports scenes still his fa-vourite subject. He is a qualified graphic designer who lives and works in Zurich.

Questions that only a royal hidden object book with an abun-dance of exciting scenes can answer!

Advent, Advent, the candles light – this beautiful edition of the well-known Ad-vent poem is designed to prepare chil-dren for Christmas and to help them look forward to this special day even more. Lovingly illustrated scenes with a lot of details show a family and their dog during Advent season, right up to the day itself. The thumb index with the Ad-vent candles enables children to count the four Advent Sundays one by one, be-fore the reader is taken, as a final sur-prise, into the Christmas room itself.

What colour is the wild flower and how many balloons are there in the sky? How colourful is the T-shirt and what is an umbrella for? There are not only amus-ing little scenes from day-to-day life to discover: The four stencils included al-low children to create their own pictures and to colour them. Turning the stencil pages also transforms the scenes in surprising ways, encouraging children’s creativity.

Three friends who are as different from each other as can be: Moe, the good- natured bear, is fond of his pantry and long naps. Hugo, however, is an ex-tremely curious rabbit who tends to act more quickly than he can think.

And then there is Pete, a brilliant pen-guin who lives in a disused fridge at the junk yard. When the three friends crash-land their home-made airship on the high seas and are caught by a pirate wolf, only the most ingenious of ideas will save them

In the end, they teach the gnomes how to prepare all the de-li-cious things they used to steal from the bear before. Luke and his friends are dealing with a baffling mystery

Luke, a confident, hearing-impaired boy, can communicate with animals by tun-ing in to their wavelength, so to speak. He knows exactly what’s worrying his tomcat, Millicent, and he’s aware of the secret thoughts of his girlfriend Mary’s Great Dane.

When Lilly, the guinea pig, disappears from the zoo, Luke is the first to hear – from his animals. With Mary and his four-legged friends, he starts to investi-gate. Lilly has vanished through a tun-nel; where does it lead to? What does the mysterious owl know and why are the niggle pigs bickering all the time?

And what is Bill, the keeper, up to at the zoo at night? A hot trail leads the inves-tigators straight into Luke’s mother’s veterinary surgery.

A fast-paced mystery featuring unusual friendships, a wide range of personali-ties and witty dialogue.

The principal is very strict and the short, spirited angel’s behaviour leaves a lot to be desired. It is hardly surprising then that Gabriel has to do some extra homework all too often. However, he will not be deterred from his great goal; neither by strict teachers nor by extra chores like swee-ping the Milky Way or sharpening ar-rows for Mr Cupid: He really, really wants to become a guardian angel!

When the Archangel Gabriel, who is get-ting on a bit, returns from Nazareth with a terrible cold (it took him several at-tempts to make Mary believe his glad tidings), Gabriel rises to the occasion. He is allowed to spend an afternoon on Earth, to look after Jan, a primary pupil who is actually the Archangel’s protégé. Spurred on by the trust set in him, Ga-briel rises to peak form ...

Ravi, the ravioli girl and Oli, the ravioli boy crash-land in old Mrs Green’s gar-den. With a rambunctious group of veg-etables calling the shots, it is a wild and wonderful place. Ravi and Oli marvel at the garden’s inhabitants: There is the Rash family, three radishes who are quite agile but also rather cheeky. Coco Cucumber, on the other hand, is a real lady, if a little slow when playing hide-and-seek. Ken Kohlrabi is the undis-puted leader, bossing everybody about when the need arises. But just when everybody is having a great time playing and becoming everybody else’s friend – Slimey Slug, voracious arch-enemy of all vegetables, turns up. Will our heroes be able to escape?

Lea Guidon, born in 1971, has a degree in nutrition psychology and is a kinder-garten teacher. She works as a therapist and regularly teaches workshops for children about nutrition and language.

From 2003 to 2011 he set up and headed the Argovian House of Literature in Lenzburg. He has been awarded several prizes for his multi-discipline literary work.

Marc Locatelli, born in 1954, studied to be a graphics designer and, after some further training, an illustrator. About Ravi & Oli, he says, ’Having read the story, I immediately knew it was my story! As a vegetarian and a ravioli fan, I’m practically a member of the Green-Land Garden Cooperative in the book.’

Life is not easy for Liz and Paul, either. Liz is the only girl to play football and wear dun-garees. Paul, on the other hand, has a slight lisp and is the least athletic boy in his class. When the caretaker surprises the three friends, disaster looms – and Ksss shows everybody what he can do!
