I worked with a large health food store to develop new ways to interact with their customers and develop a new subscription based business model. This would allow them to capture customer data and understand their customer’s needs.

RESULT My recommendations and designs were included in the final product that went to market in December 2017. The initial completion rate of the questionnaire rose dramatically and the completion rate for the first 200 participants was 98%.

WHAT I DID I analysed screen recordings of customers using the website and found that lots of customers got part way through the questionnaire before stopping. Through analysis and testing I made several key recommendations including (1) to have one question per page (2) to show the number of questions remaining at the bottom of the page (3) to use icons to help indicate the meaning of the questions (4) to shorten the number of questions and (5) to simplify the language.I then designed an improved user journey and user flows for how the improved questionnaire should be made. I used my analysis and testing to demonstrate to the client why the changes were needed and how the extra cost would benefit them.

SITUATION A key part of this was the questionnaire customers completed to get recommendations. In an initial trial it suffered from very low completion rates. I was given two weeks to help design and improve the journey that would increase the completion rate.

PSD2 Future banking app The PSD2 Future banking app was a project I worked on to help banks and financial institutions understand how the European PSD2 legislation could dramatically change the way they operate in the future. The app shows how a third party or forward think-ing financial institution could develop a banking app that linked all of a users accounts and use the information to provide them with key financial insight and assistance.

RESULT The app was shown to numerous high profile banks. The app stimulated many banks to become concerned about how PSD2 could affect their current business practices. The app was commended for bringing a future worlds and difficult to picture topic to the fore-front of many peoples mind.

WHAT I DID To explore possible future apps that could include potential user cases, I ran a number of workshops with financial experts. Using this information I was able to distil several key user scenarios that would demonstrate the impact of PSD2. These user cases helped me develop initial wire frames for the app which I prototyped from initial wire frame through to high quality UI. Working with a strategy designer I was able to develop a rich picture diagram that explained visually the key opportunities any future banking app could capitalise on as a result of PSD2.

SITUATION While working in PA Consulting’s Innovation Lab in early 2017 I was asked to help the financial services team demonstrate to the banks and financial institutions they worked with how PSD2 could affect their current ways of working and business models. I was asked to design some form of visual representation that would help them present the impact.

Smart NappySmart nappy was a project which demonstrated how connected products could generate new revenue streams for a large home care brand. Connected nappy shows how a simple consumable product can change a company’s business model into a service. When smart nappy gets wet, a notification flashes up telling the nursery that the baby needs changing. By analysing the data from the sensor over time, nurseries can begin to notice if a baby might be unwell.

DESIGN CHANGE

RESULT The prototype and business strategy was presented to several leading nappy brands. They all praised the product for the innovative thinking and user centred design it demonstrated.

WHAT I DID I analysed existing products on the market, identified where other products had failed to attract consumers and focused the design on nurseries and care homes as the major initial consumers.

By mapping out the user journey early on in the process and continually re-examining it I ensured the product continued to meet the user and business needs in a fast paced agile development cycle. I quickly developed the UI and UX of the parent app and carers dashboard to allow the developers plenty of time to develop it.

SITUATION While working in PA Consulting’s Innovation Lab I helped develop a concept and functional prototype for a connected nappy. I was the lead User Experience Designer in a small agile development team responsible for ensuring the product met the user’s needs.
