On the 24th instant the Sheriff received a eommunica- tion signed by fourmembers of the Polee Jury ofAlgiers, asking for assistance, their forcebeing hnsuffiolent tosup- pres frequent riots and unlawful assemblies in Algiors ; andthe communication of the Mayor, addressed to said Police Jury, stating that the poliee of this city had no jurisdiction in Algiers, but if the Sheriff would determine to suppress the same,he would detach a certainnumber of offcers under his orders; and he, therefore, gave the Sherlifleeven police officers, acoomponied by Officer Bol- losa. Being an inhabitant of Algiers myself,I was dl- rooted by the Sherltto take charge of the command. I, therefore, remained at the Sheriffs office, waiting for ordes from the Poliee Jury. At about 9 o'clok, Capbtan Dumas (who is the person whomade the affidavit to sup- presssaid riot) cameandreported that they were again making a greatdisturbance ; and that he was dispatched to notify me to cros the river immediately with my force. I, therefore, went over the Third District Ferry. aecom- panied by the undersigned Deputy Sheriffs, and twelve policemen. under the command of Liet. Bolloss, and we found every thingquiet in Algiers, andhaving met one of the meqbers of the Police Jury, he confirmedour belief that every thingwas quiet. We, however, went round as far as the Second District Ferry, to see if therewas any chariyari organizing, and seeing none, we went back to the Third District Ferry. and when wehad passedthe coffee-house of Mr. Vail, in which therewere several persons, we were whistled at, and called rats and looters, and I begged the gentlemen with me notto notice them ; but at the Third District Jerry, a man having insultedus severaltimes by calling us names notfit to be repeated, wastaken off, andarreested by Mr. Ilanekes, a deputy sheri. The prisoner, seeing that hewasarrested, called on hise friends to assist him, which I must confess they did not attempt to do ; several of hisfriends followed the man in custody, abusing the offiers, who I again begged not to notice it, and to go over the river, which they did, and I remained in Aigier., my placeof residence. These, sir, are the facts, just as theyoccurred. Noneaen TREPacNcER, Deputy Sheriff of the Parish of Orleans. On the 24th instant the Sheriff received a eommunica-tion signed by four members of the Polee Jury of Algiers, asking for assistance, their force being hnsuffiolent tosup-pres frequent riots and unlawful assemblies in Algiors ;andthe communication of the Mayor, addressed to saidPolice Jury, stating that the poliee of this city had nojurisdiction in Algiers, but if the Sheriff would determineto suppress the same, he would detach a certain numberof offcers under his orders; and he, therefore, gave theSherlifleeven police officers, acoomponied by Officer Bol-losa. Being an inhabitant of Algiers myself, I was dl-rooted by the Sherltto take charge of the command. I,therefore, remained at the Sheriffs office, waiting forordes from the Poliee Jury. At about 9 o'clok, CapbtanDumas (who is the person who made the affidavit to sup-press said riot) came and reported that they were againmaking a great disturbance ; and that he was dispatchedto notify me to cros the river immediately with my force.I, therefore, went over the Third District Ferry. aecom-panied by the undersigned Deputy Sheriffs, and twelvepolicemen. under the command of Liet. Bolloss, and wefound every thing quiet in Algiers, and having met one ofthe meqbers of the Police Jury, he confirmed our beliefthat every thing was quiet.

We, however, went round as far as the Second DistrictFerry, to see if there was any chariyari organizing, andseeing none, we went back to the Third District Ferry.and when we had passed the coffee-house of Mr. Vail, inwhich there were several persons, we were whistled at,and called rats and looters, and I begged the gentlemenwith me not to notice them ; but at the Third DistrictJerry, a man having insulted us several times by callingus names not fit to be repeated, was taken off, andarreestedby Mr. Ilanekes, a deputy sheri. The prisoner, seeingthat he was arrested, called on hise friends to assist him, which I must confess they did not attempt to do ; severalof his friends followed the man in custody, abusing theoffiers, who I again begged not to notice it, and to goover the river, which they did, and I remained in Aigier.,my place of residence. These, sir, are the facts, just astheyoccurred. Noneaen TREPacNcER,

Deputy Sheriff of the Parish of Orleans. We, the undersigned, Deputy Sheriffs, certify the fore-

goingetatement to be true and correct; any statementto the contrary is false.
