Miucr Conn rrrainr.--.a volunteercavalry eoas pany has been organized at Moscow, Polk eounty. The citizens ufhanton, ~mith county, have forms ed a volunteer military company. A fine cavalry company was recently organized in Austin county. Two volunteer companies have been formed at Marshall, Harrison costy. A fine company has also been raised in Jasper county. In Brownsville a rifle ompany has just been or- ganized. We notice preparation in other parts of the State to raise volunteer c Salray companies The best form of vouinteer military organisatlon in this State Is that of rifle companies. The uniform can be made simple, coSafortble, and eeonomieal; the rfle is the national weapon; the iaproved mo- dern rifle, with the sabre bayonet attaured, is as complete and formidable a weapon as could be desired; and for young men there is o more manuy, exhilarating or healthy exercise than the active drill of a light company. lncnsmuanRY DOCCxcrS. - The Nacogldoehea Chronicle states that a large amount of mait mat- ter franked by tine Notorious Sumner, was detain- ed at that office recently to await the decision of the Postmaster-General. These pamphlets, upon exmnination, were found to be the speeches of Sumneron the "Barbarism of Slavery," and kin- dred subjects. The Chronicle gives a number of names of pat- tieU-nearly all preachers-to whom these do-. ments are addressed. This should not he taken as evidence that the parties named sympathiso with that fanatical knaveandpedantic puppy. ie prao- bably obtainas the names of these parties from some churchpublication. The Brenham E•nnirer and Cameron Sentinel are urging the establishment of a line of stage coaches from BDenham to Belton via Caldtwell, Cameron and lrnyant's tation. Three heavy miala are sent weekly from Breshinm over this routa. An excellent bridge has been built acroas the Yeagua bottom, some 4i0 yards, from high-labn to highbland, thua obviating the principal oejeitons to travel by the route. The remainder of the road is exceljent. Mr. M. Englemann, of San Antonio, has made wine recently from the grape of the " Bieling" vine, that growo on the borders of the Rhine, and is in use in Germany for wine-making. The Texas wine he has made is pronounced to be similar in flavor to, and equally as good as Johaunisberg. One of the most important interests of the State, that of the atock-raisers,is now in a flourishing con- dition again, the rance being everywhere in prime condition and thecattle luxuriating on abundance of gueod grass. It has taken but a few weeks to revive this valuanble and growing interest from the alarming condition it was sinking into, from the effects of the long and desolating drouth on grass and water. Despite the severity of the drouth, it has taught our people a salutary lesson in many branches of the farmeras and planter's occupation; and, from all we can learn, they will profit by it in many ways. A sort of general row occurred in this conty on election day, about twelve miles east of this place, inwhichthree persons werestabbed, and one knocked in the head with a pine-knot. One person is thought to have been seriously injured. The parties are now undergoing examination be- fore a magistrato in this place. [K(osciusko Chronicle. A MAN KILLS HIS MOeTHE BRCAUSE HE BCLtR'v i HERTO nE A Wrrc.--The Providence Press re- t lates the following: Y terday morning, shortly before sunrise, Daniel I Brownmg, a very civil, industrious and well-to-do colored man, aged 28, an only son, living on his farm (of saeventy-five aoreo, upon which he has recently erected a new homuse), near Shady Lea I village, in North Kingtown, murdered his mother, Mrs. Content Browning, aged 54 years, widow of James Browning. The perpetrator of this bloody murder arose about 4 o'clock, took an ax, and went immediately to the residence of his mother, which is a few rods from.his own, broke down the door, entered her room, and buried the ax in her skull as she lay in her bed. He then went to the house of Mr. Benja- min S. Congden, a neighboring farmer, and said that he had murdered his mother and wanted some breakfast; that he hadbeen thinking of killing her for several days, but had not done it till that morn- ning; that his mother was a witch, and he had found that she was bewitching him, and wonld kill him if he did not kill her. Mr. Congdon disbelieved him and accompanied him back to the house where nie lay dead. The ax had been buried in the very center of her head, and lay by her side overed with blood, hair and brains. Daniel said he had a vision last nigt to kill her, and that he intended to do it. Mr.t. ad- vised him todeliver himself up to a magistrate at once, which he did readily. Me appears to have been the subject of a mono- mania in regard to his mother bewitching him, which was not brought on by the use of liquor or by bad company, but by religious excitement. This insanity is hoteditary- his father, who was the son of Primes Browning, having many years ago killed a relative named Sato, upon that identical spot, which is the homestead of the family, under a similar hallucination, and afterward starved him- self to death for the crime. Mrs. Browning has lived in Providence for the last fifteen years or more, and returned last spring to live near her son. BAYoU RAPIDEt NAVIGATION.-WO are pleased to see that this enterprise is about to be crowned with success. It is strange that the Bayou Ra- pides, a natural canal, should have been so longal- lowed to remain useless to our parish. While the State has expended thousands to disimprove the. Falls, this great canal, imade by nature, has re- nained utterly useless. Now we see that the efforts of our fellow-citi- zens, led by the public spirit of such men as Gra- Iott, Long and Gordou, are about to open a new avenue for the transportation to market of the produce of the garden spot of the parish. Thursday night the steam towboat ltsidlent ar. rived at our wharf with a full gang of hands. All the preliminary works have been completed. Mr. Angamar has taken hold in good earnest-the brick sluices for carrying off the surplus water are all completed. Assoon as the steamers can be passed into the waters of the bayou, tle work willbe fin- ished. Warehouses are in the process of construc- 1ion. cars and every lacility for the transportation of freight will be furnished in duo time. Tihe construction of the works have been en- trusted to the sumerintendeaceof Mr. J. W. Burke; a competent and skillful engineer. Mr. Angamar has secured the services of F. A. Boissat, Esq., our fellow townsman, as general agent and busi- ness man. A better selection could not have been made. Iis business capacit is unquestion- able. All who know "Armand" will acknowledge that the right man is in the'right place. A new era is opeuilg for our friends of the "Island." You may laugh at muddy roads and long distances. You are as near market as is Alexandria. [Alexandria National Democrat. DEATH OFTHE OLDEST MASON IN TvR U nITED SrTves.-The Alexandria Gazette of the 22d an- nounces the death of an aged citizen, Mr. John Shakes, and adds: Mr. Shakes was one of the oldest eitizens of the town of Alexandria. Be was.born in Kent county, Md.,on the 20th of October, 1774, and wanted, therefore, exactly one month of being 86 years of age. Having lost his father while yet an infant, in consequence of exposure in the camp of revolu- tion, he removed with his mother to Philadelphia, where he resided during a portionof the Presi- dency of Gen. Washington, octupyinga house in the immediate vicinity of that illustrious chief. He served an apprenticeship at the brush-making busn. ness in Baltrmior, and immediately on attaining his majority, attached himself to the Masonic order, of which he continued a very active mem- ber for sixty-flive years, being at the period of his death tire oldest Freemason, probably, in the Unit-d State:. Mr.Shakes removed to Alexandria ir Is0l, and since that time has constantly resided here. Iliefilled for many years several offices of public trust, and was generally beloved and re- spected by tilose who came in contact with him. -- . -- GtN-. II ovNey' DBygCec.-It is understood that General liarney hias written a letter to the Secre- tary of War, repellilg certain charges made against him by General Scott. It seems that Gen. Ilarney was removed from his command in Wash- igltoe Territory at the demand of the British Min- ister, it being charged that he had violated the ar- rangement entered into between Gen. Scott and G(o. Douglass, by removing the officer assigned by Gen. Scott to commmand the U. S. company at San Juan, and by reviving the United States Terri- torial law. Gen. Scott having reported to the Sec- retary of War that before leaving the Pacific coast he distrusted (Gen. Harney's disposition to carry out with idelity and courtesy his arrangements with Gov. )ouglass, Gen. Harney replies that he was never officially advised of these arrangements, and that he removed the offeer assigned by Gen. Scott to the comtaand ,f the United States com- pany, because al hie punishing and banishingper- sons from the island who hal been acquitted of charges of crime by the legal authorities. Gen. From Texas.

Miucr Conn rrrainr.--.a volunteercavalry eoaspany has been organized at Moscow, Polk eounty.

The citizens ufhanton, ~mith county, have formsed a volunteer military company.

A fine cavalry company was recently organizedin Austin county.

Two volunteer companies have been formed atMarshall, Harrison costy.

A fine company has also been raised in Jaspercounty.

In Brownsville a rifle ompany has just been or-ganized.

We notice preparation in other parts of theState to raise volunteer c Salray companies

The best form of vouinteer military organisatlonin this State Is that of rifle companies. The uniformcan be made simple, coSafortble, and eeonomieal;the rfle is the national weapon; the iaproved mo-dern rifle, with the sabre bayonet attaured, is ascomplete and formidable a weapon as could bedesired; and for young men there is o moremanuy, exhilarating or healthy exercise than theactive drill of a light company.

lncnsmuanRY DOCCxcrS. - The NacogldoeheaChronicle states that a large amount of mait mat-ter franked by tine Notorious Sumner, was detain-ed at that office recently to await the decision ofthe Postmaster-General. These pamphlets, uponexmnination, were found to be the speeches ofSumner on the "Barbarism of Slavery," and kin-dred subjects.

The Chronicle gives a number of names of pat-tieU-nearly all preachers-to whom these do-.ments are addressed. This should not he taken asevidence that the parties named sympathiso withthat fanatical knaveandpedantic puppy. ie prao-bably obtainas the names of these parties from somechurch publication.

The Brenham E•nnirer and Cameron Sentinelare urging the establishment of a line of stagecoaches from BDenham to Belton via Caldtwell,Cameron and lrnyant's tation. Three heavy mialaare sent weekly from Breshinm over this routa. An excellent bridge has been built acroas theYeagua bottom, some 4i0 yards, from high-labn tohighbland, thua obviating the principal oejeitonsto travel by the route. The remainder of the roadis exceljent.

Mr. M. Englemann, of San Antonio, has madewine recently from the grape of the " Bieling"vine, that growo on the borders of the Rhine, andis in use in Germany for wine-making. The Texaswine he has made is pronounced to be similar inflavor to, and equally as good as Johaunisberg.

One of the most important interests of the State, that of the atock-raisers, is now in a flourishing con-dition again, the rance being everywhere in primecondition and thecattle luxuriating on abundanceof gueod grass. It has taken but a few weeks torevive this valuanble and growing interest from thealarming condition it was sinking into, from theeffects of the long and desolating drouth on grassand water.

Despite the severity of the drouth, it has taughtour people a salutary lesson in many branches ofthe farmeras and planter's occupation; and, fromall we can learn, they will profit by it in manyways.

A sort of general row occurred in this contyon election day, about twelve miles east of thisplace, in which three persons were stabbed, andone knocked in the head with a pine-knot. Oneperson is thought to have been seriously injured. The parties are now undergoing examination be-fore a magistrato in this place.

A MAN KILLS HIS MOeTHE BRCAUSE HE BCLtR'v iHER TO nE A Wrrc.--The Providence Press re- tlates the following:

Y terday morning, shortly before sunrise, Daniel IBrownmg, a very civil, industrious and well-to-docolored man, aged 28, an only son, living on hisfarm (of saeventy-five aoreo, upon which he hasrecently erected a new homuse), near Shady Lea Ivillage, in North Kingtown, murdered his mother,Mrs. Content Browning, aged 54 years, widow ofJames Browning.

The perpetrator of this bloody murder aroseabout 4 o'clock, took an ax, and went immediatelyto the residence of his mother, which is a few rodsfrom.his own, broke down the door, entered herroom, and buried the ax in her skull as she lay inher bed. He then went to the house of Mr. Benja-min S. Congden, a neighboring farmer, and saidthat he had murdered his mother and wanted somebreakfast; that he had been thinking of killing herfor several days, but had not done it till that morn-ning; that his mother was a witch, and he hadfound that she was bewitching him, and wonld killhim if he did not kill her.

Mr. Congdon disbelieved him and accompaniedhim back to the house where nie lay dead. Theax had been buried in the very center of her head, and lay by her side overed with blood, hair andbrains. Daniel said he had a vision last nigt tokill her, and that he intended to do it. Mr.t. ad-vised him todeliver himself up to a magistrate atonce, which he did readily.

Me appears to have been the subject of a mono-mania in regard to his mother bewitching him, which was not brought on by the use of liquor orby bad company, but by religious excitement. This insanity is hoteditary- his father, who was theson of Primes Browning, having many years agokilled a relative named Sato, upon that identicalspot, which is the homestead of the family, undera similar hallucination, and afterward starved him-self to death for the crime.

Mrs. Browning has lived in Providence for thelast fifteen years or more, and returned last springto live near her son.

BAYoU RAPIDEt NAVIGATION.-WO are pleasedto see that this enterprise is about to be crownedwith success. It is strange that the Bayou Ra-pides, a natural canal, should have been so longal-lowed to remain useless to our parish. While theState has expended thousands to disimprove the.Falls, this great canal, imade by nature, has re-nained utterly useless.

Now we see that the efforts of our fellow-citi-zens, led by the public spirit of such men as Gra-Iott, Long and Gordou, are about to open a newavenue for the transportation to market of theproduce of the garden spot of the parish.

Thursday night the steam towboat ltsidlent ar.rived at our wharf with a full gang of hands. Allthe preliminary works have been completed. Mr.Angamar has taken hold in good earnest-the bricksluices for carrying off the surplus water are allcompleted. Assoon as the steamers can be passedinto the waters of the bayou, tle work willbe fin-ished. Warehouses are in the process of construc-1ion. cars and every lacility for the transportationof freight will be furnished in duo time.

Tihe construction of the works have been en-trusted to the sumerintendeace of Mr. J. W. Burke;a competent and skillful engineer. Mr. Angamarhas secured the services of F. A. Boissat, Esq.,our fellow townsman, as general agent and busi-ness man. A better selection could not havebeen made. Iis business capacit is unquestion-able. All who know "Armand" will acknowledgethat the right man is in the'right place.

A new era is opeuilg for our friends of the"Island." You may laugh at muddy roads andlong distances. You are as near market as isAlexandria. [Alexandria National Democrat.

DEATH OF THE OLDEST MASON IN TvR U nITEDSrTves.-The Alexandria Gazette of the 22d an-nounces the death of an aged citizen, Mr. JohnShakes, and adds:

-- . --GtN-. II ovNey' DBygCec.-It is understood that

General liarney hias written a letter to the Secre-tary of War, repellilg certain charges madeagainst him by General Scott. It seems that Gen.Ilarney was removed from his command in Wash-igltoe Territory at the demand of the British Min-ister, it being charged that he had violated the ar-rangement entered into between Gen. Scott andG(o. Douglass, by removing the officer assignedby Gen. Scott to commmand the U. S. company atSan Juan, and by reviving the United States Terri-torial law. Gen. Scott having reported to the Sec-retary of War that before leaving the Pacific coasthe distrusted (Gen. Harney's disposition to carryout with idelity and courtesy his arrangementswith Gov. )ouglass, Gen. Harney replies that hewas never officially advised of these arrangements, and that he removed the offeer assigned by Gen.Scott to the comtaand ,f the United States com-pany, because al hie punishing and banishing per-sons from the island who hal been acquitted ofcharges of crime by the legal authorities.
