Surely you are all familiar with the old joke about the Jewish person who gets stranded on a desert island. After scouting out the land, the person gets busy and builds two synagogues. Later, when the person gets rescued, the rescuers notice the structures and ask the person why they needed to build two of them. The person answers, “This is the shul I go to, and this is the shul I don’t go to!” Jewish jokes like these often carry some sort of truth. To me, this one carries two. The first relates to methods of self-definition. It often seems easier to define ourselves in terms of what we are not, and to promote our worth by pointing out the flaws of those we are not. One might be tempted to say, ‘a Jew is a Bible-believer who rejects Jesus,’ for instance, or ‘a rabbi is like a priest, but is allowed to get married.’ Rather than focusing on what we

are not and pointing out the faults of those we are not, the more com-mendable method is to positively define who we are. It has often been a struggle for Conservative Judaism to positively identify itself, even historically. In 19th century Germany, non-de-nominational Judaism split into the Orthodox and Reform movements. In the 20th century, the American Conservative movement began, and was understood as being somewhere in the middle, not Orthodox, but also not Reform (and it was called ‘conservative’ in relation to the Reform movement). Until the late 1980s, the movement’s leadership was actually quite satisfied with the lack of a positive definition. In the 1988 publication, Emet Ve-emunah: Statement of Principles of Conserva-tive Judaism, Rabbi Kassel Abelson, then president of the Rabbinical Assembly, wrote that, “this lack of definition was useful since the majority of American Jews wished to be neither Orthodox nor Reform, and therefore joined Conservative organizations.” Times have changed, and mem-bership in a Jewish organization is not seen as being vital, as it was in generations past. People need a posi-tive reason to affiliate. Certainly for me, it is the honest and authentic commitment to fully live in society, without abandoning either tradition or modernity, and without disparag-ing or excluding people who make

different personal choices, as long as those choices don’t infringe on or exclude others. Conservative Juda-ism is eternally dynamic, and that is its strength and beauty. The world needs Conservative Judaism because of its inherent value, not because the alternatives are worse. The second truth in the joke is the need for community and shared worship space – a synagogue. While technically speaking, a lone Jew on a desert island can fulfill all 613 commandments without fault, he or she would not be fulfilling the very important spirit of the law of being a part of a community. The first thing that should be done when moving to a new place is to build a synagogue if it doesn’t have one yet. Community for Judaism ex-ists in two spheres, both equally important and indeed interdepend-ent. There are Jewish rituals focusing on the Jewish community at large, and there are rituals focusing on our own mini-communities, our Jewish families. The High Holidays in the autumn focus on the large community and its central celebra-tions occur in the synagogue, while Pesach focuses on the family and its celebrations occur at home. A Seder cannot properly be celebrated alone, since the Seder needs to be conducted in question-answer style, and one needs someone else to ask questions. Perhaps my favourite part of the Seder is the story of the four

children – the wise, the wicked, the simple-minded and the uninter-ested. Despite their differences in interest, and the important differ-ences in how we should relate to each of them when answering their questions, they are all invited to our seders, all cherished parts of our family. This, of course, should reflect the makeup of a vibrant Jewish community too: a community made up of a variety of viewpoints and levels of affiliation, but a place where everyone is made to feel at home, in accordance with our understand-ing of the essential meaning of our tradition. This, too, is the essence of Conservative Judaism. Hamilton needs Conserva-tive Judaism, and you need your synagogue. Beth Jacob is your community. We care about you, and we are always here for you. A community can only be as good as the people who choose to be actively involved. The two most important steps to making a community thrive are actually the two parts of the word itself: come-unity. Come – as often as you can, however you can, but come. Unity – be there for each other, stand united and strong, ap-preciate each other’s contributions, and work together to preserve what we have and help it to flourish, for the sake of our children and our children’s children. Happy Passover to you and yours!

    THE PRESIDENTA word from

A few months ago, I was delighted to receive an invitation to sing at a concert this coming May in Paris, France. I’ll be singing my arrange-ment, for cantor and choir, of the Moroccan Kol Nidrei (actu-ally pronounced Kal Nidrei) at the Copernic Synagogue. It was the site of a terrorist attack in 1980 com-

mitted by a Canadian academic who was a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The bombing marked the first deadly at-tack on Jews in France since WWII. Singing Jewish music in this venue will resonate deeply with me as it will represent a strong affirmation of Jewish resilience and cultural vitality as an ongoing response to hatred and violence. It will also resonate for me be-cause Kol Nidrei is such a powerful moment in the Jewish conscience. Unlike so many melodies we sing in the synagogue today - many of which were written within the last 60 years - I cannot tell you how much it means to me to be singing a melody that dates back centuries. This is walking in the footsteps of the generations before me. Indeed,

this Moroccan Kal Nidrei is truly a traditional tune. Because of the choral arrange-ment, my rendition has a unique stamp on it. Arranging the melody for a four-part choir and a soloist is completely foreign to Moroccan tradition, to Moroccan ears. I did it so that I could bring a western sen-sibility to this eastern melody and in order to find newness in the old. As Passover approaches, it oc-curs to me that the way that many read the Passover Haggadah reflects how we seek to find newness in the old, how we seek to bring some-thing new to tradition - or adopting new traditions. Rabbi Dan and Karen Selsberg would engage their children with several clever toys and activities during the reading of the ten plagues. I’ll never forget how

my dear friend, Marvin Caplan Z”L, and Judi adopted the Persian custom of participants beating each other with green onions during Dayenu! One of my Haggadahs, A Different Night, has many additions including the African-American spiritual Down by the Riverside. The Haggadah tells us that “bechol dor vador - in every genera-tion one is obligated to see oneself as one who personally went out from Egypt”. The past must always be present in our minds. We are rooted in it. But every generation must find a way to make the past be meaningful to them. We must, therefore, strive to preserve tradition while looking for something new to bring to that tradition. It is in this way that tradition does not remain stagnant, but lives and flourishes.

Building and strengthening a community is a difficult task. It’s difficult to know when best to zig and when best to zag. The road has many forks and the way is not always clear. The easy path is to keep going straight. However, when the expecta-tion is that the straight path will lead to a dead end, it is critical to at least make a turn. The Beth Jacob board recently made the very difficult decision not to renew Cantor Eyal’s contract.

While we expected this to be an un-popular decision, we recognized that this was a step that must be taken to preserve our institution. We felt that a change of course was needed to ensure that the voice of Conservative Judaism continues to be heard in the Greater Hamilton Area. It’s very difficult for me to write this, but sadly my generation, and the generations that follow, in many ways have become too disconnected from our all too recent history of oppression. Within months of the rise of a new U.S. political view on the world, anti-Semitic and anti-religious activities are on the rise across the United States, and now, even in our more liberal Canadian society. This is happening at a time when more and more people are questioning the value they get from their religious institutions. How many of you have worried in the last two years about leaving a lit menorah in your window during Chanukah for fear that you may

become a target of hate? How many of you have considered taking down your mezuzah from your doorpost thinking it could be used to identify you? How many of you are comfort-able identifying yourself as Jewish in a large group of people who you don’t know? None of us should be fearful of this. None of us should be concerned about this. We live in one of the greatest (if not the greatest) democracies in the world. And yet – these are real fears. Sadly, I don’t see the world becoming a safer place for minorities in the next 4 years. We need advocates and representation. We need leadership and strength. We need a place to gather, to learn, to connect with our spirituality, and to share our ideas. The institutions that we have fought so hard to preserve are needed now more than ever. It’s true that the individuals who lead us within our institution are critically impor-tant, but we ourselves must take the necessary steps to ensure there is a

future. By taking these steps now we can work to ensure a future for Beth Jacob. I’d like to suggest the following proposition - Please join me and the Board on April 27th at 7:30pm as we discuss further steps to strengthen Beth Jacob. Let’s work together to ensure that Beth Jacob will continue to have a voice in the community and will be our legacy that we can pass to our children and grandchildren. I hope that you will all bring your ideas for steps forward to support and protect us. I hope you will bring your energy and willingness to participate not only in the discussions that even-ing, but also to volunteer to sit on the committees that will be needed to follow through on those discus-sions. This challenging task is not the work of only the Board; We need the work of the entire community to ensure our future. I can’t wait to see what we can build together.

TREASURESThe Rosenshein Museum at Beth Jacob presents the third of a four-part series offering the community a window onto the archive of Jewish Hamilton’s oral history on Sunday, April 30, featuring an interview with the much-loved raconteur, Helen Yellin, of blessed memory.

Imagine a time when everyone you knew lived on Cannon or York Streets, a time when a fellow Jew would invite a family of jobless newcomers to stay with him—rent free—and the arrangement would continue for eight years, a time when live chickens and geese were sold at the Hamilton market, when couples got married in their relatives’ homes above the stores on York Street, when Ziskind Boleslawsky’s kosher deli was so popular that at night it was like a club, and when the Arbeiter Ring shule and its beloved teacher Chaver Brik were so popular that the Talmud Torah sought to pressure parents not to send their kids there.

Join us at the Rosenshein Museum to watch the Jewish Hamilton Project video interview and hear Helen Yellin’s recollections of Jewish life in Hamilton during the 1930s and 1940s. Video footage will be followed by discussion.
