I have an invita-
tion and a chal-
lenge for us as we
approach Passover this year. I hope you
will accept it. It is an invitation to join
me for a project during the week of March
17 to 23.
There is a statement in the Torah that
appears many times that is connected
to Passover: “You shall not oppress the
stranger, for you know what it feels like to
be a stranger, for you were once strangers
in the land of Egypt.” And there is a state-
ment from the rabbis that appears in the
Haggadah: “In every generation we must
see ourselves as if we personally were
among those who left Egypt.”
I must tell you that I have a little trou-
ble observing this commandment, since,
for the most part I really do not know what
it feels like to be a stranger, and I really do
not know what it felt like to be an Israelite
on my way out of Egypt. You see, on Shab-
bat and for other events, I wear a suit and
tie; but the stranger, the outsider, the poor
person in our midst, may not have a suit to
wear, even on special occasions. My prob-
lem is watching my diet and not eating too
much; but the stranger, at least the way it
is understood in the Torah, the stranger’s
problem is getting enough food to eat, or
enough food with which to feed his fam-
ily. So how can I really understand what it
feels like to be a stranger? An outsider…?
Recently someone came up with an idea
for how we can identify with the stranger
and the poor. The idea is to take what is
called the Food Stamp Challenge. That
means to agree to spend no more on food
for a week than what the poor receive in
food stamps. The United Synagogue of
Conservative Judaism, the Religious Action
Center of the Reform movement, Mazon: A
Jewish Response to Hunger, and a number
of other Jewish organizations have gotten
together to sponsor the weeklong Food
Stamp Challenge. They are urging people in
public life to agree to spend on food only
what the poor get in food stamps in order
to experience what their life is like. Those
who have taken the challenge report that
they now have a new understanding for
those who have to live on food stamps—
not just for a week, but every day of their
lives.
What better week to do this than the
one before Passover? Those who take the
challenge, well, at the end of week, they
can go back to their old habits if they like,
but the poor, the stranger, this is their
daily reality. Did you know that there are
45.7 million Americans who are on food
stamps? Did you know that one in every six
American families is now living in hunger?!
Congress, which is struggling to control a
deficit that is now out of control, is con-
sidering a bill to cut the amount of money
that it will allocate for food stamps. I also
wonder if you know how much is allocated
for a person for food stamps for a week? It
is $31.50. That is the total.
Should you take the Food Stamp Chal-
lenge? It is not for me to say. So here is
my invitation. There is no holiday that re-
minds us that we were strangers more than
Passover. So my plan this year is that the
week before Passover, March 17, I will take
the Food Stamp Challenge, to “remember”
what it feels like…
And I am hoping not to take this chal-
lenge alone. I am hoping you will accept
my invitation and take the challenge with
me. If you are tempted, you can go to www.
foodstampchallenge.com and you will find
all the information you need to sign up for
this program. And if you do, you will be
among those who take on the mitzvah to
empathize with the stranger and the poor,
because we, you and I, were once strangers
in the land of Egypt.
I am not a nutritionist, so I cannot tell
you whether this diet is good for your
body or not, but this I know: it is surely
good for your soul, for it helps you fulfill
the mitzvah that is found in today’s sedra
(Mishpatim), and which is found so many
other times in the Torah.
So, if you decide to take on this diet, go
to the website, find out more and then let
me know, and I pray that you will receive
G-d’s blessings for the good deed that you
do.

Will You Take the Food Stamp Challenge?A New Way to Prepare for Passover
4 ADAR - NISAN 5773 MARCH 2013
In a few weeks
we will all gather
around seder tables
with family, friends,
fellow congregants and, yes, strangers (for we
were once strangers in the land of Egypt) to
celebrate our freedom and our beginnings as
a people. When we open our Haggadahs, we
retell of our journey from slavery to freedom,
as we passed through the Red Sea into a new
life and bound for the land of our Fathers and
our own destiny.
“We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt,
and G-d brought us out with a strong hand
and an outstretched arm.”
We were free to follow the mitzvot re-
ceived from G-d at Sinai; we were free to
worship and give thanks for the world that
we could now experience with open eyes
and a lev hadash (a new heart). From our
days of wandering in the desert to the
present day 21st century, we established
communities both in the land of Israel and
wherever our destinies brought us.
In our desires to emulate the Master of
the Universe with strong hands, we built
houses of study and places of worship.
With outstretched arms we welcomed all,
both friend and stranger alike, into our
homes and our hearts. Again, using the
Haggadah as our model, we reach out to
those who are hungry; let them come and
eat, and to those who are in need, we will
help them fill their souls and heal their
bodies.
For generations, the founders and fami-
lies that make up MJCBY have strived in
good times and bad to do exactly what is
expected of us. We pave the pathways for
our children’s children, and when needed
reach out of our arms to those who made
this our home today. We need you all to be
our strong hands to build, mend, and en-
hance our building, schools, and programs.
We need you, one and all, to open your
arms and hearts to generate the warmth
that one feels upon entering our doors and
walking the hallways of history.
You can be part of this in many ways:
Join a committee, help work on an
event, come with your ideas for innova-
tion, and give what you can to keep us
strong and vital.
We, our strong hands and outstretched
arms—we grow and we prosper.
Help make MJCBY the Morristown Jewish
Center B’Yachad (TOGETHER).
Have a zissen Pesach, Gerry

Passover Instructions for Preparation
This year Pesach begins at sundown,
Monday, March 25. The Fast of the First-
born, or siyyum, is at 6:45 am on Mon-
day, March 25. A siyyum (conclusion of
the study of a portion of the rabbinic lit-
erature) is held at the conclusion of the
morning minyan, followed by a seudah
shel mitzvah so that the firstborn may eat.
Bedikat Chametz (the search for cha-
metz) occurs on Sunday evening, March 24.
The chametz should be burned by 11:30
am on Monday, March 25. The stove should
be koshered for Passover and all cooking
done using Passover pots and utensils.
FoodsLabels and tags marked “Kosher
L’Pesach” are of no value unless they bear
a rabbinic signature. This also applies to
products manufactured and grown in Is-
rael.
Forbidden for use: leavened bread,
cakes, biscuits and crackers, cereals, wheat
oats, barley, rice, dry beans and peas, and
all liquids, which contain ingredients or
flavors made from grain alcohol.
Permitted for use requiring NO “Kosher
L’Pesach” label in unopened packages
or containers: natural coffee, tea, sugar,
salt, pepper, vegetables (except peas and
beans)
Permitted for use if certified for Pass-
over use by a competent rabbinical au-
thority: flour, Passover noodles, candies,
cakes, beverages, canned and processed
foods, milk, butter, cheese, jams, jellies,
relishes, dried fruit, salads, oils, vegetable
gelatin, shortenings, wines, vinegar and
liquors.
Dishes and UtensilsOnly dishes and utensils specifically re-
served for Passover should be used with
the following exceptions:
Table silverware made wholly of metal, if
used during the year, may be used on Pass-
over if thoroughly scoured and immersed
in boiling water. Table glasses may be used
after scouring. Fine chinaware, if not used
for a year is permitted.
Metal pots and pans used for cooking
purposes only (but not for baking) if made
wholly of metal though not used during
the year, may be used on Passover if first
thoroughly scoured and immersed in boil-
ing water.
Utensils used for baking during the year
cannot be used during Passover. Earthen-
ware, enamelware and porcelain utensils
used during the year may not be used dur-
ing Passover.
The stove is prepared for Passover by
thoroughly scrubbing and cleansing all
parts and turning on the full flame in the
bake oven with all the grates in the oven.
A dishwasher may be used after thor-
oughly scouring with boiling water and
the use of a new tray.

PassoverWe begin our Passover seder with the words, “Let all who are hungry enter and eat.” Again this year, Mazon: A Jewish Response to
Hunger asks you to give meaning and life to those ancient words by letting one who is hungry enter and eat. A gift to Mazon of
Chai ($18) or whatever you would spend to invite one extra person to your seder, will bring food, help and hope to poor and hungry
people in our own country, in Israel and around the world.
As we celebrate our freedom during Passover, we must remember those millions still enslaved by hunger and poverty. In a world with
more than enough food to feed everyone, we can work toward a day when everyone has enough food.
P A S S O V E R F U N D – M A O T C H I T T I MJews are particularly mindful of needy fellow Jews during Pesach. A Maot Chittim (money for wheat) fund is distributed to those in need. This year’s dollars will be sent to Mazon. Please make your contribution payable to the MJCBY Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund.

March 2
Joy and Tony Vaz, along with sisters Ja-
mie and Vivian, warmly invite the con-
gregation, family, and friends to join in
celebration as we honor Lillian Vaz, when
she is called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah
on Saturday, March 2, 2013.
Lilly is a seventh grader at Old Turnpike
Middle School in Oldwick, where she has
been a member of the field hockey team for
the past two years. Lillian is also a mem-
ber of the school vocal ensemble and cho-
rus. She is very committed to the theatre
arts and had been performing for years on
stage. A member of the YPW theatre work-
shop within the halls of Centenary College
in Hackettstown, Lilly has found her niche.
She has been cast in many plays including:
“Camelot,” “The King and I,” “The Clown,”
“Count To Ten”—written by her acting di-
rector, “Over the Moon,” “Pippin,” “Hello
Dolly,” and her first lead role as Hortense
the French maid in “The Boyfriend.”
A dancer since the age of three, Lilly has
committed herself to the art of dance with
lots of intense practice as a member of the
New Jersey School of Ballet. This enabled
her to be cast in two roles with the NJSB’s
“Nutcracker,” the state’s longest-running
original professional production.
Lilly also enjoys drawing, going to Camp
Harlam, reading, spending time at the Jer-
sey Shore, hanging out with friends, cook-
ing, and playing with her guinea pig Lila
and her dog Daisy.
Lilly chose to do a couple of Mitzvah
projects. For one project, Lilly decided to
use her love of drawing and combine it
with a cause she was passionate about—
the welfare of animals. She created several
charcoal drawings of endangered animals
registered with the WWF and created note-
cards to sell to raise money for the World
Wildlife Foundation. Proceeds will go di-
rectly to the foundation.
Her second Mitzvah project was to com-
bine short essays and narratives about
the Holocaust from her point of view.
She hopes to make a connection to the
young people who have heard about the
Holocaust and share her thoughts and im-
ages with the older generations who know
about it already. Hopefully, these will be
seen at the Holocaust exhibit at the JCC
in Whippany.
We are so proud of Lilly and admire all
that she has accomplished in her life. We
wish her well as she accepts this rite of
passage and continues her journey into her
Judaism—inward, upward, and outward.
Lilly would like to thank Rabbi Nesson,
Cantor Yucht, and her religious school
teachers for not only preparing her for
this day, but for also helping to shape and
guide her on her Jewish journey.
It is our pleasure to share in celebration
with our congregation, friends, and fam-
ily on this occasion of Lilly’s Bat Mitzvah.

Jeanne and David Stifelman would like
to invite the congregation to share
their happiness when their daughter, Jac-
quie Stifelman, is called to the Torah as a
Bat Mitzvah on Saturday March 9, 2013.
Jacquie is a seventh-grade honors student
at Randolph Middle School, where she en-
joys choreographing, dancing,singing and
acting in the amazing musical produc-
tions. When Jacquie is not in school, she
is a passionate, talented and dedicated
dancer who competes locally, regionally
and nationally. She also is a Randolph
Bulldog Cheerleader. Jacquie enjoys an ac-
tive social life, music, skiing, traveling and
spending time with friends and family.
For her Mitzvah project, Jacquie was
honored to meet and hang out with Jea-
nette Epstein, an amazing woman who is
a long-time member of MJCBY and resident
of Merry Heart Assisted Living. Jacquie
felt incredibly fortunate to have met and
gotten to know Mrs. Epstein. In addition,
she collected dance costumes at Heartbeat
Dance Center to donate to the Neighbor-
hood House Dance Program in Morristown
and Dover.
Jacquie and her family are excited to
celebrate this important and beautiful
simcha with family and friend at Morris-
town Jewish Center.

Stacey and Brad Bolnick are so proud
of their daughter Gillian Rose Bolnick,
who will be called to the Torah as a Bat
Mitzvah on Saturday March 9, 2013.
A seventh grader at Randolph Middle
School, Gillian is an artist who enjoys
sculpting and drawing. She makes poly-
mer sculptures and sells them at various
functions to raise money for animals in
need, donating more than $300 so far. Gil-
lian just had a chance to teach her own
after-school art class at Ironia Elementary
School. She was able to teach the young
children how to make there own creations.
They all so thrilled with their projects.
Gillian enjoys musical theatre, acting
and singing, and she has written, directed
and starred in independent short films.
Gillian attends summer camp at Island
Lake, a sleep away camp in Pennsylvania.
A six-year camper, Gillian spends time in
art and riding the mini clown bike in the
circus show. She also enjoys spending time
with her brothers and loves when she can
get together with her out-of-town family
and friends.
Gillian is so thankful to the Cantor and
the Rabbi for helping her get ready for this
special day. She also thanks her Hebrew
teacher for making Hebrew school so en-
joyable.

Debbie and Danny Feuerstein are thrilled
to invite the congregation, family, and
friends to join us in celebrating our son
Joseph (Joey) Charles Feuerstein as a Bar
Mitzvah on Saturday, March 16, 2013.
Joey is a seventh-grade honors student
at Harding Township Middle School. He
enjoys playing competitive travel baseball
(he is a pitcher and first baseman), soc-
cer, and basketball. Joey has won various
sports championships and really enjoys
participating in organized sports and be-
ing with his teammates. He also likes play-
ing various other sports on a recreational
level. Besides sports, Joey enjoys hiking,
biking, swimming, bass fishing at his
grandma’s lake in upstate New York, read-
ing, playing with his brothers, and hang-
ing out with his friends. Joey also enjoys
his summers at Camp Harlam (sleepaway
camp in Pennsylvania). He attends with
many of his MJCBY friends whom he has
known for many years at the temple’s re-
ligious school. Joey’s Jewish identity has
definitely been strengthened by attending
the camp. Listening to him and his MJCBY
friends recite the blessings after attending
camp is truly music to our ears!
For his Mitzvah project, Joey worked
alongside his Uncle Dave (who has a party
business in New York) and helped put on
various shows for children with special
needs. Whether he was playing Elmo at a
home for children with autism or Mickey
Mouse at a hospital with children bat-
tling cancer, Joey brought so much joy and
laughter to all! One child hugged Joey dur-
ing a show and said, “Elmo, after seeing
you on TV for years, I always dreamed of
meeting you in person!” On the ride home,
Joey exclaimed, “Mom, it feels so good
making these kids feel so happy!!” That is
the true meaning of a Mitzvah Project.
Joey has been at MJCBY basically his
whole life. He started at 2 years old in
the Judie Gerstein Shalom Yeladim nursery
school and has always identified strongly
with our shul. It is hard to believe he is
becoming a Bar Mitzvah. Joey is a great
boy who always makes us proud in all the
things that he does and especially for the
kind, caring young man he has become.
Joey would like to thank Rabbi Nesson,
Cantor Yucht, Morah Halpern, and all of his
religious school teachers who have helped
and supported him during his journey to
this special day. It is with great happiness
and pride that we look forward to sharing
Joey’s special day with the congregation.

16 ADAR - NISAN 5773 MARCH 2013
Passover has always been a favorite
holiday. It is a time to gather with
family and friends. It is a time to connect
with past generations by following tradi-
tions like finding the afikomen, dipping
your finger into the wine glass and letting
drops fall on your plate, and asking the
Four Questions. Passover connects us to
our past, instructs us to teach our future
generations, and reminds us of many im-
portant concepts.
Passover reminds us of freedom. The
idea of freedom is important to discuss
with your family during this holiday. Most
people who were born in this country find
it hard to imagine living without freedom.
Some people even take it for granted. Dur-
ing Passover, if you have family members
who remember living in a place where they
were not free to live or pray or work as they
wanted, have them tell your child about
their experience. Once we were slaves, but
now we are free—we must never forget to
cherish our freedom and fight so that oth-
ers, too, may one day be free.
Passover also reminds us that some-
times we need to adjust to change. As
slaves in Egypt, the Jewish people lived
under Pharaoh’s rules for many years. The
idea of change was not easy for them. As
difficult as their life was as slaves, how
could they leave behind everything they
knew to wander to a place completely for-
eign to them? They had to have faith, to
trust their leader, and to hope for a better
time. Passover is a wonderful time to talk
with children about flexibility. Maybe they
don’t love their current teacher or a friend
has moved away, but they will adjust. Per-
haps they didn’t get onto the travel soccer
team or get the lead in the school musical,
but with some faith, they will find a new
path for themselves.
Passover is about hope—hope for a
better place to live and a better future
for generations to come. As Passover ap-
proaches, we will remind our own children
to open their arms to those who are differ-
ent, who might not read as well or speak
as easily, who do not dress in the same
clothing. We will remind our children that
skin color and body type do not dictate
the value of the individual. We will ask our
children to extend kindness to children in
their classes who are sometimes excluded
or teased. We will also remind our children
that freedom means standing up to make
our world a place that is more fair, toler-
ant, and just.

February was a fun month at Shalom
Yeladim. We had Crazy Hat Day, Pic-
ture Day, and our Purim Celebration. The
kindergarten class was very helpful with
planning our Crazy Hat Day and our Purim
Celebration. They came up with the ideas
and the entire school had a great time. A
giant todah rabah to the kindergartners!
The Matzah Factory will be visiting us on
March 18. The children learn so much dur-
ing this program and are able to make their
own matzah. They start with the grain and
take it every step of the way until it is
a fresh piece of matzah right out of the
oven. It is a wonderful way for each of
them to experience part of Passover. They
will also be putting on their Passover reen-
actment on March 21.
We will be wishing a Happy Birthday to
Zachary, Lilly, Sophia, Ari, and Grant!
